It's really a good place,, it just depends on where you SIT and what you ORDER. Walk in and sit at the BAR. You will get served right away. Get the Jessica Roll and stay away from their Miso soup (Its the miso soup that you just add hot water to in the packet). Overall its pretty good and never really packed. read more

Solid, solid 4 stars. The sushi is everything sushi should be but some of the sides leave something to be desired. Spicy tuna/salmon is the hands down best. Vinegar based instead of oozing mayo makes my day. I went here while visiting my Father in small town Tehachapi and as a native Angeleno, I must admit this is not your average small town sushi joint. They know what they are doing, from the greeting when you enter, right down to the copious refills of green tea. They get one star knocked off for average decor and trying to charge me for some nigiri sushi which I never received. The sushi was fresh, tasty and not laden down by unappetizing mayo based sauces. They have a roll called 911 which is fabulously overdone but delicious. And obviously due to the small town status, you can't beat the price. One would be hard pressed to find the equivalent in LA. read more

Ichiban was surprisingly good! I personally cant stand any type of fish. But my friend really wanted some sushi so we went here. She got a salmon roll and she said was absolutely amazing. The rest was things we shared and had no fish. Appetizer of chicken pot-stickers which was so tasty and cooked perfectly. They have chicken, crab, and another type of fish pot sticker.. Tempura Veggies which was in the potstickers are a nice mix of squash, carrots, onions, and zucchini. Also got really good white rice that was cooked perfectly. They are fast and very tasty. Have a lot of sushi but i never had any of the sushi only their cooked Japanese foods which are definetly my favorite japanese food i have had. read more

We love this place especially when our crew of 20 all want to get together after business hours and enjoy a meal together! Prices are fair, service is fast and sushi is great! And the owners actually mailed my wallet to me when I left it there but didn't remember where I lost it at. That's great small town customer service. read more

I am giving two stars in hope that this review helps the business in a few gray areas. I came here a few days ago and was invited to take a seat where I wanted. When I sat down, the restaurant smelled of sewage (and no, this was not a "fishy" smell). We ordered some teriyaki chicken and it came out cold, as if it had been sitting for awhile. Then, we ordered ramen with extra noodles and we were not told of the major price add on. ($4 for extra noodles?) I have never been to any restaurant that served ramen where the extra noodles were over $2. It was very unprofessional for them not to mention the add on price. The food was alright. It was our first date night in a long time and this was a bit of a mood ruiner. Hopefully it was just an off day, as I know the garlic edamame is excellent! read more

I have over 15 years dining in Los Angeles at some of the best sushi joints around. No insult, but the rave reviews from Tehachapians is puzzling because the food here is nowhere up to par. I ordered an eight piece Yellowtail spicy roll and edadame. The damage was about $10.50. However, to my dismay, the 8 piece yellowtail roll fit in a white carton box about 4"x4" and each roll had the diameter of a quarter...yes, as in 0.25 cents. The sushi was tasteless as was the so-called spicy sauce. The yellowtail was fresh to its credit. The portions were completely unsatisfactory and not even close to restaurant standards. The edadame was crisp, wet and fresh but was salted way too much. Good edadame should have a hint of saltiness but not like eating a spoonful of kosher salt.; that's how salty this was. I should've spent the $10.50 to buy a sandwich next door. read more

Sushi is pretty good. It's as expensive as any sushi restaurant I've ever been to. The Asian waitress messed up our order 3 different times and there was only one other group in there, so not sure if I mumble or if she was just maybe having a bad day. She ended up getting frustrated when she forgot to bring out different things we'd ordered and finally she just kind of became rude and short. Again, no complaints about the food at all. read more

I have to say I have been eating Japanese food for over 40 years and Sushi for over 30 years. Ichiban is really good, the sushi is fresh and tastes great. Very flavorful. The food from the kitchen is great, love the combo plate of chicken and shrimp. You must go here! read more

Best sushi Tehachapi has to offer! I have had sushi in LA that was not nearly as good as the sushi at Ichiban. Prices and service beat Kasagiri and Midori by far. My favorite is the Burrito Roll, it's a must try! Tiger Roll is delicious if you like it spicy. Green Dragon and Jessica Rolls are always delicious as well. The place is always clean, which is a huge plus! The only thing I have ever ordered that I did not enjoy was a side salad because the dressing was yellow and tasted strongly of lemon and nothing else. read more

It's unusual for a town the size of Tehachapi to have THREE sushi restaurants. This is the best one. Much more attractive interior than Kasagiri and better food than Midori. It is also the best place in town to drink beer: draft Saporo (superb) for $3.00. Cant beat that! read more

My wife and I ate here last night and liked the atmosphere but by far the most disappointing sushi experience in years. My wife ordered the rainbow roll and I the California rolls and the teriyaki chicken dinner with vegetables and fried rice. My wife's sushi was not fresh and the old fishy smell and taste was so strong and bad. My Miso soup was the worst I have ever had. It was so watered down. It tasted like brown water. The teriyaki sauce on my chicken was also tasteless and watered down. The fried rice was watery and also tasteless. Not one thing we ordered was good. The only thing good was the Sapporo beer. They struck out on everything we ordered. We have never had a bad experience in any sushi restaurant we have dined at and were so disappointed last night at Ichiban Sushi. We loved the sushi bar but that's about it. We won't be back. Sad we were so happy to see Tehachapi getting another sushi restaurant only to be very very disappointed. This place should not even be called Ichiban there is absolutely no resemblance to the ones in Bakersfield which are 100% better. The sushi is decent but they don't serve a proper teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki reminded me of cat food. The side salad I had, the dressing reminded me of Orange Julius. No one wants a Orange Julius poured on iceberg lettuce. read more

Sushi requires high quality and careful attention. Order it only after a restaurant proves itself with the "easier" cooked items. Usually this is our favorite Sushi bar in our hometown of Tehachapi. This time however it was terrible. The staff look dirty. The chef? that was making our rolls was shabby looking and sounded like he had a cold. The place was practically empty, so he just sat on the floor until we ordered again. Hardly saw the waitress. And when I tipped appropriate to the service she started shouting to her other waitress in whatever language they speak. (Not trying to be a racist, it's just rude). I ordered sweet shrimp and it was fishy tasting and not at all sweet. I didn't eat the second piece. I did not taste the freshness of any of the fish, although the nori came with very decent size pieces, which were made by what appeared to be the head chef. That being said rolls from the dirty chef were small and what fish it was was unidentifiable. We were there on a Saturday night, and the place was like a morgue, which is where the fish should be. read more

This place is great! Price is reasonable. Service is good. Sushi is alway fresh. We went there a lot because we love sushi. I am glad we have a decent place like this in Tehachapi. Their seafood salad is excellent. One day I went there I want to order something light. I asked my waitress:" do you have anything light expect the rolls, but I want to have shshi too". She said we can make you a seafood salad. I said "OK". So I order a small seafood salad with a bowl of rice. It real fill me up. My husband and I had good intentions and read great reviews on Yelp so we were excited to visit Ichiban but we were so disappointed and wouldn't go back. The staff seemed lacking in pride and the food did as well. We are not food snobs but we didn't even finish our meal. We orderd the cheese wontons as an appetizer and it wasn't listed that they had crab in them. My husband has a chronic illness and gets seriously ill when he eats meat. While that could have been a misscoumminication between the server and ourselves, we didn't even get halfway through the Udon. It was not very good. The tempura shrimp was the only dish that was enjoyed. However, the tempura vegetables we're soaking in grease. The staff sat with their backs turned to the customers at the bar and seemed bored with their jobs. It was just really disappointing. Japanese food should taste clean and not heavy and this was far from that. read more
