Cheesesteak
Michael L.

IB's is located on Lakeshore Ave in Oakland. I nice looking, small eatery, where most customers seem to take their food-to-go, but despite that, there is decent dining area available at this location. The process is simple, order off of the menu above the register, pay, and wait for the food. I thought overall the ingredients were solid. I was happy with the bread, ingredients, the halal meat, etc. Would I visit again? Yes. Best ever cheesesteak? No. But still an ok spot for your cheesesteak fix

Jamie W and I must have a particular mindset when considering a cheesesteak sandwich. I believe that mindset would likely be... "WHO GIVES A ****? STOP JUDGING ME." We kept passing by this busy spot on Lakeshore and had a weak moment when we decided to ignore our sags and convince ourselves we were twenty-somethings who could eat anything. Under delusions of a zero-calorie world, I ordered the $15 Regular Truffle Steak Sandwich. I added $6 to get the combo of Fries and a Diet Coke. Hey, what can I say? I like a deal. Bypassing the chicken and lamb meat options available, I went with the grass-fed beef as my protein with white truffle aioli and melted Swiss cheese (Photo 10). Give me credit for not ordering a $28 Large. Believe me, the Regular was more than enough for my girlish figure. Of course it was tasty as I was wracked with a guilty conscience with every bite. OK, every other bite. Jamie was not as pretentious as me and went straight for the $13 IB's Original Sandwich with the grass-fed beef. He let the Works carry the heft with lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, mayo, mustard, hot sauce, and cheese (Photo 8). Did I mention I got the Works, too? I couldn't help myself, but hey, Jamie added $6 for his Combo deal. We're all guilty. Of course he liked it, but the pleasure ended once we left. Our real payment came next...if you know what I mean. FOOD - 4 stars...old-style cheesesteak sammies with fries hit the spot though you probably pay for it later...if you know what I mean...vegans need not apply AMBIANCE - 3 stars...typical fast food set-up SERVICE - 3.5 stars...fast enough for fast food TOTAL - 4 stars...sometimes you just need to forego the nutritional rules and indulge RELATED - Exploring Oakland? Bacon steak with chicken and sweet peppers.

I went to IB's recently to grab a bite before heading to the Grand Lake to catch a movie. I've been patronizing this chain since I was a kid and they never really have let me down. During this venture I decided to go with the bacon steak with chicken and sweet peppers. When selecting your sandwich you have a few meat options to pick from including beef, chicken, and lamb. Most of the meat options are also halal I believe. My sandwich was super flavorful as usual and loaded to the brim with toppings. Not pictured are the garlic waffle fries I ended up splitting with a friend which were also crispy and delicious. The vibe of IB's on Lakeshore is casual. There's artwork hung on the walls of their various sandwich selections. This is a good spot to drop by if you're in the area for shopping or a drink and want some comfort food to hold you over. The staff were friendly and our food came out in a reasonable time. Check out IB's if you're in the mood for a hoagie!

located on the street where many businesses are, if you don't pay attention, you will miss this place. Parking is a if you find one, you better park, unless you don't mind a stroll? you'll be fine. The staff here are very friendly, as soon as you walk in, smile with a Welcome In, Hi how can I help you? They don't have a huge menu to chose from, but they do have a variety on the menu, so depending on how your feeling, burger, cheese steak or sandwich, they have options, for the cravings & I'd have to say, mines was satisfied & I was a happy customer. If I'm in the area, I would definitely be back to check out the other options on the menu.

Garlic Fries

Was in the area and wanted a snack. Garlic fries - 2outta5 They had a funny aftertaste & hardly any garlic. A dash of salt would've gone a long way. Watermelon Lemonade 5outta5 Absolutely delicious. It was refreshing, not too sweet & damn good! I'll definitely be googling a recipe.

Huge gross fatty pieces we can choke on.

Honestly. When I first started coming to this location it was fire. But the quality has taken a nosedive. Before, the meat was perfect- chopped up, no fatty pieces, crispy and juicy. And now I get so many nasty huge piece of fat. I lost my appetite eating it. And they used to use these delicious sweet peppers like the cheesesteak shop that was sweet and hot. Now they have these bitter tasteless sweet peppers. Gross. The grease they fry the French fries in is not great. My stomach is literally turning. I spent a lot of money for 3 people and I just want to throw it all away.

Chopped Cheese Pepper Steak

A random stop on a journey throughout NorCal turned out to be a gem and highlight!! It's on a busy street where this lots of life. The menu has so many cheesesteak options & I had to go with the chopped cheese. They made sure I understood what went on my meal got me and my friends to buy everything we wanted. We didn't wanna sit inside cause of the energy we could sit next to outside. Super recommend if you're in the area

Nothing was overpowering, and everything tasted clean and well-made. What really stood out to me was how fresh everything tasted. I really shouldn't single them out because I've noticed that a lot of the east bay delis have the same type of bread, but I will say that it just wasn't my taste. The rolls (I got the Dutch Crunch, sourdough roll, and the soft roll) were not that great and --like I said-- maybe it's the same vendors everyone uses in the east bay. For the cost, I'm not too enthused to try the other options. Every time I passed by their spot, it's busy, so I figured I'd try it. It's just not for me, but people seem to like it. ‍

I recently developed an allergy to onion and, unfortunately, onion is the only ingredient not listed to remove on the Saint Francis sandwich (on their website). I decided to call to place a pickup order so I could mention the allergy. The man who picked up the phone refused to take an order insisting that I must place my order online. I explained there wasn't the option to remove the ingredient and was worried since I had an allergy. He argued that I was mistaken, and I could edit the order online or order a "build your own sandwich" (without acknowledging the additional cost for such a thing). I mentioned the inaccessibility of such a system and that I truly wasn't seeing the option to remove ingredients. He spent longer arguing with me over the phone than it would have been to take my order over the phone. Eventually, I relented, and placed an online order stating in the "notes to seller" (the only way to edit an order in this case) no onion on the Saint Francis sandwich. There was onion on my sandwich. Maybe instead of believing they need to be right, they should just listen to the customer and try to accommodate.

I have been eating delicious sandwiches from Modigliani Café since it opened. Always so delicious,…read moreand so friendly. But I have to wax poetic for a minute: today I ate the very best pastrami I have ever had. I grew up on the East Coast (as did the proprietor) and I have easily eaten 500 reuben sandwiches in my life (because they are pretty much the very best). This pastrami is absurd. It is thin. It is tender. It is flavorful. It is meaty but not stringy or fatty. It is moist. It is a love letter. It is a sweet whisper. It is goodness through and through. Made into a reuben, this pastrami is divine. I believe the proprietor makes his own thousand island dressing and it is just right. The bread has been pressed and grilled, and is neither tough nor soggy. You taste and feel the cheese, but it does not overwhelm. In short, I am in heaven. The proprietor of Modigliani Café grew up in a family that worked with meat, and he won an award when he was quite young for curing bacon (you can see the certificate on the wall in the shop). So my suspicion is that this pastrami is his creation. And I bet that bacon was the best ever. Pay Modigliani Café a visit. Everything I've ever ordered was delicious. Bring cash because they don't take cards.

I usually order a #2, #7, and #13. It's very affordable, especially if you're on a strict budget for lunch. $7 sandwiches? I mean it's a pretty good deal. #2 Banh Mi Dac Biet/Special Combo Ham Sandwich - If you're looking for a cold italian sandwich but want to explore new options this is a vietnamese version that also has pate butter taking it to the next level. #7 Banh Mi Xiu Mai/Meat Ball & Egg Sandwich - An elevated version of the #3 with an added egg. This was my absolute favorite as a child and still is now. Nice balance of sweet and salty. The meat is tender and with the added egg yolk that pops when you take a bite takes it the next level. I think this is also slept on since I don't see many people ordering it. #13 Banh Mi Xa Xiu/BBQ Pork Sandwich - This is their secret weapon. My god the sweetness from the bbq pork with the pate butter is incredible. I always look forward to eating the bottom end of the sandwich because that's where most of the flavor and butter are hiding. The pickled veggies help give it the acidity it needs for a well balanced bite. By far my favorite. They also have many other options besides banh mi that make and sell on the day of like Banh Cuon, Che, Egg rolls, etc. Definitely give those a try especially the Mochi Ham sandwich aka Banh Day they got there too. I always have a hard time choosing between the #7 & # 13 so I always end up getting both. Service is straight forward, you line up, order, and wait for them to call you up for your order. Simple. You don't have to ask me twice if I want to grab some banh mi here. But do be aware that at certain hours of the day it can get very busy and crowded. Either to super early when opening or closer to closing about an hour before. For new comers, I highly recommend starting off with #7 or #13 for your introduction to their banh mi for a better first time experience.

I've had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is "The Balls" sandwich. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I'll be honest that I'm not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try "The Balls" because I promise you will be disappointed. I will always say that the dozen or so times I've been here, the staff are always so friendly, and the atmosphere is very down to earth.
