I could have made this at home. I risked getting blipped at Lakeshore to eat this bland sandwich. The garlic curly fries didn't give off a garlic flavor. Very much sprinkled some garlic from a jar on top of the curly fries and "salt bae" the parsley then placed them on a plate. There was nothing amazing about it. The sandwich's cheese pull was pretty basic especially since we paid for extra cheese. The chicken was kinda bland. Even though I added their sauces - I pulled out all the stops and $60 later I was still disappointed. The bread does have a decent texture... but the meat is not flavorful. I mean I get it - IBs is a very much berkeley, lakeshore targeted hoagie. The food is meant to taste fresh, give people the feeling that they are cheating on their diets with this little splurge. I appreciate the attraction. For me I need a little more. I want the meat to be seasoned. Yes; the vegetables had a great crunch. The heat from the sauce was not really there - kinda just sprinkled and didn't marry well with the sandwiches. One of the sauces was vinegar-based - they need to fix that immediately. Really good steak sandwiches that makes it difficult to choose which one you want. I don't have a favorite but I like them all equally. The food is good but. I was walking the lake and decided to order a sandwich. I asked for a bag and they said it was $0.25. I only had my cc so I decided to buy one but then they said it would be additional $0.25 for the cc service. Really! That's very petty. When I ordered the sandwich and they had an option for a bag, I would have paid. Now I won't go there anymore. They lost my loyalty for $0.25 I own food business anda very aware of cost of goods. When I do take out from other businesses (which I do alone of) they often don't charge me for a bag fee. I have to say that the burgers here are so much better than I expected. Usually, if I go to a place like this, I'm going to get a cheese steak every time, but I was craving a burger. I got the Western. Aside from them not having pickles, I really enjoyed it. My partner had the vegetarian burger, and they said it was really good as well. This place also has great cheese steaks, and I can only hope they're consistent across locations. I usually order from the Berkeley location (where I live), and their cheese steaks are phenomenal. The first time I had IB's was many years ago at their downtown Oakland station near City Center, and it was average at best, but they've exceeded all expectations since I started ordering from them again in Berkeley, and this Lakeshore Oakland location has impressed me with their burgers, so I'm sure their cheese steaks are just as good. I've gone to this location twice now and thought it was simply okay. I've been to the Berkeley location a bunch of times when I was back in high school so I was happy there was a location closer to me. Today I ordered the original cheesesteak, a bacon cheeseburger, and the bacon cheese fries. The steak in the cheesesteak was dry, so was the bacon cheeseburger, there was hardly any cheese in there so I had to dip it in my bacon cheese fries to get some flavor going. Reading through the reviews, I think a lot of people are nit picky, or are expecting something fancy. There is no way these sandwiches deserve anything less than 4 stars. I absolutely love IB's cheesesteaks!... and they actually improve my mood and satiate my appetite, My go to is the Pepper Steak, and it has never disappointed or let me down! Perfect / fresh hoagie rolls, stuffed and overflowing with delicious steak, gooey cheese, and perfectly cooked peppers & onions. Their sandwiches are fairly large, and if you add a side or two, one can easily feed two people, and won't leave either of them hungry. It's not a bougie sandwich, but a cheesesteak shouldn't be,.. but it's a 110% delicious! If you are disappointed with yours, it's either a very rare fluke, or your sense of taste is broken or poor. read more

I ordered the Surf and Turf (shrimp + beef) hoagie with lettuce onion tomato and mayo. They forgot to put the shrimps in there so that's pretty disappointing, it was still a decent sandwich though. I love cheese steaks so I was excited to try a new cheese steak place that isn't the philly cheese steak shop. Kinda weird that they would put this store right across the street from the cheese steak shop, especially considering the sandwich I got was right on par with them. In all honesty the philly cheese steak shop might even be better because they have nice fluffy rolls. The IB hoagie bread tasted stale, even though it probably wasn't. On a positive note, the sandwich held together well and wasn't falling all over the place. I didn't feel like I had to dislocate my jaw to get the thing in my mouth. Came here on Friday around 8:30pm (30 min before closing). Called and ordered a mushroom steak cheesesteak and went there to pick up in about 3-4 min. Waited a min or two and it was ready. Ordered it with everything minus cheese. Sandwich was freshly made and still piping hot. The bread was not soggy, which is always a plus. Loved that there was ample meat and satisfying! I got the cheeseburger, the cheapest burger or sandwich on the menu. It was $9. It was tasty but here's the problem: the bun. The cheapest weakest bun possible. Look, a burger is yes about the burger and the veggies, but at the root level, a sandwich is about the bread. Any sandwich or burger is 50% a bread experience. It's a make or break. And the bun at IBs is so weak that the burger experience becomes a floppy sloppy mess without any of the flavor, texture, and eatability that a decent bun provides. This was my first time- they do tout themselves as one of the great cheesesteak companies- being that I'm from Philly I know those are some bold claims. I no longer eat meat so I couldn't put it to the test so instead Mom chose a cheeseburger and I chose the veggie patty burger. The veggie patty came with avocado (yum), Swiss cheese (I am not vegan), lettuce tomato, onions (I requested grilled) and the burger sauce which has mayo in it. I do appreciate the clerk asking if the cheese and mayo were okay in case I were vegan. All burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onions and the burger sauce. And you're also offered a side of sauce which includes either ketchup, ranch or bbq. We asked to have our burgers cut in half in case we didn't finish right away. No worries though cause I ate it atll! From the first bite, you could tell how fresh everything was. I have eaten many veggie patties at a number of restaurants and I will tell you I don't know how they did it- but that was the JUICIEST veggie patty and it was full of flavor (no salt needed). The grilled onions gave it even more flavor and the creaminess of the avocado took it over the top. Mom raved about her cheeseburger. They only use grass fed or free range meat (chicken, lamb or beef). They also serve hot wings, an assortment of cheesesteaks, burgers and sandwiches. All drinks are refillable. I ordered the wings. Before I ordered, I asked if the buffalo sauced wings come saucy or dry. I didn't ask this to make small talk or for fun but because I like saucy wings. The cashier said yes those are saucy of course. 4/5 wings were dry, and the other one was completely burnt. I'm completely willing to spend the extra .50-1.00 for extra sauce, but let me know it's necessary. The food here is horrible I order two cheesesteaks and the bread was soggy and saturated in oil. I also ordered fries that looked old and saturated in oil the bag the fries came in was oily when I touched the fries my hands got oily. This is unsatisfactory and I told the staff there before I left IB's, and I hadn't even eat off of it. I asked the staff for my money back on the fries and he called the manager and he was told not to refund me because the fries come in oil. So I asked him to take everything back and return my money and again the staff called the manager and was told not to return my money. Bottoms line this place has horrible food and horrible customer service. Not to mention their were flies all over the place I should've been paying better attention before ordering from here. To the owners respond to this comment/review at no point did you or your staff offer any other alternatives. Finally, the authentic cheese steak I have been seeking in the East Bay. Yeah, it's a little greasy (that's what it's supposed to be), but it is also perfectly cooked and seasoned, with the right balance of condiments, veggies, meat, and cheese. Kinda surprised by this place, wasn't expecting much. I am not local, but after being in the area we were looking for Pimpin chicken and burgers are always easy for me to groove with. The biggest things for me were grass fed burgers and good sizes, for prices at or less than most fast food restaurants. The burgers themselves were a little on the dry side, but I also got them no ketchup or burger sauce. Classic cheeseburger was loaded with lettuce, great gooey melted cheese and onions. L was disappointed they don't have pickles. L got the bacon burger and although not crispy (how he likes it anyways) it was thick and tasty. I also got the pastrami burger with swiss cheese (for less than $10?!?!?!) and it was good, but probably would just go for the cheese or bacon burger. We got the onion rings, but just straight up.
