Art...(just past flowers)
C J.

Ha! Just read a review that Hyaena is mostly flowers? That dude is seriously blinded by stupidity. I've been going to this gallery for years and they show some of the best artists around! I also just took this picture and it looks like art to me. Dude, put a sweater on, walk past the beautiful flower display and see some awesome art like the rest of us.

I've spoken with the owner Bill a couple of times and he seems like a really nice guy, too.

Although I consider myself an artist and a creative; the skillset of drawing and illustrative art…read moreeludes me. Even though I am not the one to call on when wanting to have your likeness sketched; I do appreciate the art of drawing and am drawn (pun intended) to individuals who are illustrators/artists/etc. These people, although NOT comic book nerds (I draw the line at that -another pun!) can delineate quality comic books, graphic novels and art books. My boyfriend, who is an esteemed Hollywood 3D animation artist with a long list of credits to his name (so proud of him!); is an artist inside and out and we recently followed our curiosity into House of Secrets: comic book/graphic novel/collectibles shop in Burbank. House of Secrets is a 35+ year old local business originally holding down the fort in La Canada-Flintridge before its current real estate at the corner of Olive and Lamer not far from the Warner Bros Studio lot. From the exterior, House of Secrets looks like a regular ole' storefront but it lives up to its moniker because its doors truly open to an immersive art-filled comic book store that is unlike many I have seen (not that I have been to THAT many). House of Secrets has the vibes akin to the coolest record store you can imagine with a main room filled with bins and shelves of comic books, graphic novels and other art books from rare and back copies to modern-day releases all beautifully organized and tidy making any OCD-afflicted individual (me) overjoyed. House of Secrets is a world of color and print and even supplements the actual merchandise stock with posters on the ceiling and laminated into the floor tiles. Every inch of House of Secrets is a work of art. But if that isn't enough, House of Secrets features side rooms giving it an art gallery vibe with even more comics/books plus art from local artists for sale. Frankly, House of Secrets is 'cool' even for someone like me who isn't a comic book nerd and not a part of the world of graphic novels due to it being an art paradise. House of Secrets is an experience that is interesting to check out simply for the ambiance. The customer service at House of Secrets is also top-tier as my boyfriend who knows a little more about the merch sold at the shop than I do; asked for a particular piece and the gentleman working (I am assuming one of the owners) immediately had answers and knew what he was talking about which was also reflected when overhearing him answer other customer's questions. Plus, he wasn't annoyed that we were hanging in the store near closing time! I've noticed that I often feel very uncomfortable in specialty niche stores especially if out of my hobby element but somehow felt fine at House of Secrets. They are welcoming and friendly to all who enter their threshold. I can't comment on the pricing at House of Secrets and whether they overcharge or excel in this aspect as well because I do not know enough about the products to even remotely know proper pricing. Word on the streets is that House of Secrets also holds events and author signings! House of Secrets is an incredible local Burbank business that is exceptional for comic book lovers but also 'fun' for those who may be lesser so; but appreciate art and print. Definitely check out House of Secrets when in the Burbank area!

It's…read morealways caught my eye though, so when I finally had a day off (kind of rare nowadays) I made it a point to beeline straight here shortly after opening. It's located off of Cahuenga Blvd & Chandler Blvd, with a small private parking lot out back and plenty of street parking around. I knew this bookstore was stacked but wow! The Iliad is literally stacked with books! From floor to ceiling, this place is packed with books every which way. Because of this and narrow aisles, it can get kind of tight in places but it's easy to maneuver around. They have practically every category/genre you can think of, but be prepared to take your time since it'll take a while to look through everything. There are some seats if you want to take a load off and there's a clean restroom near the back. The new and used books vary in price, but for the most part they're on the cheaper side. The employees were nice and they even have a couple of friendly cats that roam the store (so watch your step!). I can't believe it's taken me this long to visit The Iliad, but I'm a fan and I'll definitely be back!

The moment you walk in the front door you're confronted with the fact that they have a lot of books on a lot of subjects. In fact, at this location, the moment you walk into the door, you find a gigantic pile of all kinds of books on all kinds of subjects that they're offering for very discounted prices. I've often wondered what would happen if you wanted a book on the very bottom of the pile, and if you pulled it out, everything may come flying. But, that's just part of the fun of shopping at this bookstore, you never know what adventure you're going to encounter. In terms of selection, they have books on pretty much any subject you can think of. In some ways, it's a little hard to find certain things in this bookstore due to the massive quantity of books they have all set up in long aisles. In some cases, what I find kind of fun/curious is the fact that perhaps they will have a sign telling you that a certain subject of books in a particular aisle, but, when you look down that aisle, you can find none of the books on that subject. Mostly, I believe, that's just because they've sold out of that particular subject matter. But, it does make for an interesting quest, because there's been a few times when I've looked around the shop and found books on that subject in a completely different section. Thus, the chaos of this book shop adds to the overall quest for that great piece of reading material. This bookshop focuses a lot on fiction and poetry. They really have a large collection by various authors from across all genres and across the globe. So, if you're looking for that really unique piece of fiction and or poetry, this book shop most likely will have it. Overall, ever since its inception, Iliad has been a great place to find books. Yes, it is kind of a chaotic/fun sort of a mess. But, that adds to the overall uniqueness of this business. Fun place to shop!

The layout and organization was really nice. Every section had it's own unique look. My favorite, and i think everyone's as well, is what seems to be a tree-like stand in the middle of the interior section of the bookstore. Once i was done admiring it's beauty, It was time for business. How many books can i justify getting!! I decided that i for sure wanted to get a book from a local author and some cool unique books that were unconventional. They had some books behind glass cases and some others that were mass printed in the 90s and a whole section for California based authors. Perfect. They also had many sections of some of my favorite books, books that are on my TBR and many many many books that were so tempting to get that seemed so good. I ended up getting 4 books for under $100. One of which is a book by a local author, and 3 others that were collectibles of some sort. I am very pleased with my purchase and believe the lovely lady that helped me check out agrees. When i come back to Cali, i will be coming back here for more cool books.

Housed inside a former bank, the space already carries this grand, historic energy that sets the tone before you even start browsing. What makes this place unforgettable is how it's designed to be explored, not rushed. There are cozy spots scattered throughout where you can sit and get lost in a book, but the real magic is upstairs. It opens into a maze of rooms, each with its own personality, filled with carefully arranged books that feel more like art than inventory. At times, it genuinely feels like you've wandered into a dream. One of the highlights is the famous tunnel of books, which adds to that surreal, almost cinematic experience. Everywhere you turn, books are used as decor in the most creative ways, and it creates this quiet moment where everything else fades out. Upstairs also holds one of my favorite parts, a row of art studios featuring work from local artists. Every piece feels intentional, unique, and thoughtfully placed. Right nearby, there's a small coffee shop surrounded by beautiful artwork, making it an easy place to pause and take it all in. This isn't a quick stop kind of place. Plan to spend a few hours here, wandering, discovering, and just enjoying the atmosphere. It's one of the most iconic bookstores I've ever been to, and it absolutely lives up to the reputation.
