To be honest, my favorite BITE of the whole weekend was from Husk. Their tuna crudo blew me away. The flavor combo was dynamic and dynamite. Unlike any of the ones I've had that open lean heavy on acid citrus and let other flavors take a back seat. This was a balance of earth, creamy, spice, and some acid. Simple but crazy good. Creamy filling with a crispy bit of country ham on top that made them pop. For mains, my wife had the Wreckfish, which was light, buttery, and paired with some flavorful risotto. I went with the 48-hour Beef Short Rib, which was steak-tender. (I say steak-tender because our waiter mentioned it's not your typical fall-off-the-bone short rib. Their style is more like a perfectly cooked tender steak.) Service was awesome. Our server was chill, helpful with the menu, and kept the vibe relaxed. Overall, a perfect date night. If you're in Charleston and want a mix of charm, flavor, and solid Southern cooking, Husk is 100% worth it. Tip: Make your reservation for 5 PM. Why? You can show up around 4 PM when the bar opens, grab a drink, and chill on the front patio while waiting for your table. The food was interesting, and I really enjoyed the chicken skin . It was perfectly made, and the grits were a nice touch, though they felt a bit heavy, and I couldn't finish them. The green sauce was surprisingly not spicy at all, but I requested it on the side, and it was executed just right. One thing to note: the bill was higher than expected, with an 11% tax and additional fees that aren't common in other cities. The peaches and tomatoes were so ripe. I loved everything about this dish. -Roasted Chicken: this entree has potential, but I found it underwhelming. Stunning building. Wonderful staff. Ambiance very good (lots of sound dampening on the ceiling to reduce the echo within the room, which was successful). Appetizers were good. I had the NC Oysters and they were extremely tasty. My wife had the chicken liver mousse, which was excellent (I had to try it) and a very generous portion. We both ordered the scallops, which is something we should not do in case something goes amiss. And, it did. Pretty small portion for the price in my estimation and would have been delicious if not for the surprise hot sauce. It's not on the menu as being hot nor spicy, so you only find out after the first bite. I thought it was pretty hot, but my wife can't eat spicy food and for her it was basically inedible. They did bring her some extra non-spiced grits to help, but the grits are a bit too smooth and a bit bland in both our estimations. The scallops themselves were truly excellent and perfectly cooked. The hot sauce really didn't add anything but heat and overpowered the carrots. I suspect the hot sauce is used to give grits some flavor that they might not otherwise have. A word of warning should be added to the menu, or voiced by the server. The wine list was adequate but pretty limited. I found that a bit surprising. What we had, however, was very good. OTOH, the pour was pretty small. Deserts were a bit of a disappointing lot with most of the items way too sweet. I tried the creme puffs, which were OK, but too much sugar in relation to the lemon curd. I suspect this will not make it to our list of places to return to, which is too bad. read more

KenScale: 8.0/10 Visits: January 2025 Earlier this month, my wife Jun and I spent one weekend in Charleston visiting a couple friends we had known since our time in New York City. The weather in the area was surprisingly chilly, so we ended up mostly hanging out at our friends' house with their 7-year-old son and puppy. Of course, that doesn't mean we didn't check out any restaurants in a city well-known for its food scene. For a quick Sunday brunch, we took our chance at a walk-in table at the storied Husk, which had been one of the most influential trailblazers in modern Southern cuisine in Charleston and beyond (the restaurant also have locations in Nashville and Savannah). This was actually our second visit to the restaurant since 2021 (when we had visited our same friends). I remember having a pretty solid brunch then, and while we didn't have an opportunity to try as many dishes as we would've liked this time due to an early dinner that day, our brunch this time also left me quite satisfied. We were seated at the heated patio area away from the main dining room, so that might've been why our food came out so late. It was a relief, therefore, to get a bite out of deviled eggs and smoked trout roe to get the meal going. Of course, this being in Charleston we had to share some delicious buttermilk biscuits, accompanied by pepper jam. It's hard to mess up the classic Southern dish shrimp and grits, but I was quite fond of the one from Husk, with its creamy grits and crunchy shrimp just what you would need for a hearty brunch (and a hangover cure if you had a wild night). The best dish of the brunch was the short rib dirty rice accompanied by fried egg. Originated from the Creole cuisine in Louisiana, the dirty rice was addictively delicious, with the texture of soft short rib and chewy rice working so well together and chili crisp providing an unexpected spicy kick that I will think about again. Husk is still one of the most popular restaurants in Charleston, so if you are looking for a regular dining room seating, advance booking is highly recommended. There is full bar with classic brunch and regular cocktails and wines that would go along well with the Southern dishes from the restaurant. As I mentioned above, the delay in food was a slight mishap, but otherwise service was mostly fine. When you are visiting Charleston, Husk is the type of restaurant you would want to visit to explore its soulful Southern dishes. We haven't been to the restaurant for dinner yet, but as far as brunch is concerned, it's hard to beat the proposition of delicious food inside a charming spot in downtown historic Charleston. read more

OMG what an amazing meal. From the moment we got here to the time we left we had a great time. Service was impeccable and the food was some of the I've ever had. It's not often that I think every bite from the app to the entree is beyond delicious. This was one of those occasions. The pork belly dumplings were out of this world. I have never had rabbit before so I can't compare it to anything I've ever had, but wow what flavor it had. My wife had the blackened scallops and enjoyed them, but did say it had too much parsley on it. Our drinks were excellent as well. The restaurant is broken up into several dining areas and I noticed sporadically tables would go unseated yet, on RESY there was no time slots available. I couldn't book a reservation at 6p yet walked in off the street and they accommodates us. Maybe I'm off track on what I think is their marketing strategy but the serving staff is extremely attentive with various waiters tending to your experience with an overseer of the floor and your waiter who take your order. My glass never went empty. My chicken dinner with okra and peppers was to die for. This is a pricy dining experience but my food was fantastic! Husk is a good as they say! Hugh end quality food - the best meal I had. We had an early reservation on a Friday (5:15pm) and it quickly filled up. Loved being seated upstairs as the ambiance was elegant. Cant comment about downstairs dinner but I'm sure it's just as nice. Husk was recommended to me by a friend who often visits Charleston. It was my first time visiting and decided to try Husk; I was glad to be able to grab a reservation even though it was earlier than I normally would book (there wasn't much left when I checked). Our waiter was great in that he checked on us, got what we needed, but wasn't hovering over us. It was nice not to feel rushed. I've been waiting a year to eat here, ever since we visited Charleston last year and couldn't get in on a last minute reservation. Well, it was absolutely worth the wait. I made my reservation a month or so in advance and am so glad I did. The location itself is so beautiful and has a convenient parking lot next to it. My husband, 6 yr old, and I had the most delicious feast: yellowfin carpaccio, deviled eggs, pork chop with peaches and mole, rigatoni with rabbit andouille and shrimp, bacon crumbled skillet cornbread, and the dessert... oh my word... a cantaloupe custard with graham cracker crust, a scoop of chocolate peanut butter ice cream, and one more scoop (because we are clearly gluttons) of blackberry corn ice cream. Fantastic, beautifully plated and all so well balanced. My 6 year old said it was the best meal he had on our vacation (I agree). We have been wanting to eat at Husk for a long time and let's just say the food did not disappoint!! I got the rigatoni meal, and it was phenomenal! Another Southern comfort treat I had to experience in South Carolina. We were absolutely lucky to get a table at this place for brunch, at the prime 12pm Sunday afternoon time. Never dreamt I would have it in an authentic Southern mansion converted to a restaurant. We were seated on the 2nd floor and it was so spacious in this area. All I needed was a fancy ruffled dress with my parasol to fit this scenic day. And the meal we had was incredible that you would rarely get back in my home. The lavender strawberry fried donuts was so powdery and jam filled goodness, not too sweet that I was able to take multiple quick bites. I didn't go for the cocktails such as the Bloody Mary and mimosas but these were stylish and had a punch in citrusy and spices. The best from what my friends said that they ordered multiple in one sitting. My drip coffee was very strong and dark with the cute little milk mug jar given to me - just like what you see in the Alice in Wonderland movie when she was trying to shrink to fit through the keyhole. Starters are down, let's go straight to the entrees. Fried chicken and biscuits with peppercorn gravy, with a second dish: pork belly, chili oil flakes and lemongrass fried rice. Both weren't shy with the punch in spices and crisp flavors. The runny egg on top of my pork belly dish made the flavors even more satisfying. The best topper to this dish. Finally completed my trifecta of Husk restaurants by coming to the original in Charleston for Sunday brunch. It wasn't too busy in the morning and I made sure to make the reservations a month in advance. The fried chicken was the star. Only the bones were left. It also came with some nice bread and butter pickles that had enough sweetness so definitely not like the ones you find in the store that is off putting to many. The biscuit was prefect and was perfect in-between a scone and bread roll in texture. We had banana bread as well. Perfect and the deep fried banana skin and the creamy topping paired well with the bread. Brunch drinks were also fresh, light, and tasty perfect to start the day. She was extremely well informed about every dish on the menu, and upon telling her what I was looking to eat, she gave me suggestions that I took for each course. I started off with the green curry oysters and the salad with fennel. Both very fresh, bright, and unique - the perfect intro to the meal. Yum! Absolutely one of the best meals I've had in a while. Husk is doing it right. We really wanted to try this place since it came highly recommended by a chef friend. We scored 10pm reservations last-minute for New Years Eve night and it was our only chance to dine here since they're closed Mondays. We arrived about 20 minutes early and enjoyed a drink at the adjoining building's bar. They have a lovely and charming wooden bar adjacent to the main building in a smaller building with two stories and more seating. After a few minutes, we were texted that our table was ready. We were shown to a lovely table on the first floor near a fireplace. Our waitress was wonderful all night, named Megan. She paid just enough attention, was super knowledgable about the menu, and promptly took care of any and all requests. Very sweet and easygoing. We started with the pimento cheese which was served with delicious house made crackers and sliced, spiced apples. Wonderful pairing. We shared the Tilefish entree which was fresh, flakey and amazing. A great portion size and served over harissa spiced spaetzel and a pumpkin puree with micro greens. This dish was phenomenal. Very inventive and everything tasted perfect together. For dessert, I chose a citrus tart that was a fresh take on key lime pie with a spicy gingerbread crust. Again, excellent. The ambiance inside is great. It's located in a prime location just off King Street near the Mills House Curio Hilton Hotel. Two stories of dining and seating as well as the previously mentioned adjacent bar building with an outdoor patio area. Our waitress informed us that, while there are three locations now (Savannah, Charleston and Nashville) this is the first and original. They source locally and print and change their menus daily. Husk is a cool renovated house turned restaurant that is known for having a different menu every day. Our group of three came in on a Sunday for brunch and it wasn't too busy, but I do recommend reservations. To start, we had the buttermilk doughnuts with lemon glaze and my friends loved them but there was something about them I didn't like. It wasn't the lemon glaze.. that was delicious. But idk I just was not obsessed with the doughnut taste itself. For meals, I had the fried chicken with honey drizzle and a biscuit. The chicken was so crispy and delicious and the biscuit was too. However, it did feel like it was missing some gravy. The mushroom and Boursin omelette was good but again nothing to brag about. My friend got the fried rice with beef short rib and an egg and that was by far the favorite meal of the bunch. It was delicious and full of flavor. Definitely order this if it's on your menu! Husk advertised their mimosas served with fresh squeezed orange juice, but unfortunately the drink itself just tasted like watered down champagne... bummer! The espresso martinis were my least favorite of the whole weekend because they were VERY strong and tasted like straight vodka until I stirred it a bit. But make sure you get reservations in advance, we came on a Saturday and got the reservation about 1 month prior. To start, wait staff were fabulous and the restaurant has an old house type feel. I ordered a Wendy peppercorn to start with infused tequila, it was the right amount of sweetness from the strawberry ($16). We started with deviled eggs, which are some of the best I've ever had. They had sweetness from the bacon jam, and saltiness from the whipped cheese with a kick of jalapeño ($15). The cornbread was good, but nothing out of this world ($10). The mains were the scallops ($54), mushroom and ricotta cavatelli ($35), and beef short rib ($45). Our favorite was the Cavatelli (very rich and creamy), the scallops (cooked perfectly, very tender with a good sear) and the chimichurri on the beef short rib. We also got the chocolate strawberry cream cake to end the night, with rich chocolate cake on the bottom and a cheesecake-like strawberry topping ($12). We came in for an early dinner without reservations and were lucky enough to get an upper floor balcony table. The ambience was serene and a great way to chill out with our pre-dinner drinks. I had heard great things about the chicken, so I got that, which came out in a half chicken portion, smaller than a grocery store chicken because it was a premium local product, but definitely enough for me. We also got four sides. The heirloom beans were the standout. I'd post a picture but the visual doesn't do it justice. It was a delicious medley with wonderful flavor. We really scraped the bottom of the bowl for that one. Another standout was the asparagus in the miso-romesco sauce. Spicy and flavorful and really just perfect. Charleston is full of good food but our meal at Husk was one of the best (Miller's All Day breakfast as a close fav but for totally different reasons-vibe). We could not get dinner reservations but managed to get a late lunch reservation and it's the same menu. I had the fried chicken which was out of this world! Our adult children live in the south so I've had my fair share of southern fried chicken but truly Husk was the best! Chicken itself was flavorful, not just the breading. They were very helpful with explaining the menu and any questions about the menu items. For brunch their apple donuts were crispy on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. I only ate one at the restaurant and the rest were eaten hours later but even then it was delicious. For dinner we had the wood fired oysters and ink gemelli with okra. I have never eaten okra but in the ink gemelli due to how thinly cut it was... it was not slimy looking or texturally slimy to eat. It paired well with the ink gemelli and provided a crunchy texture. Waiting area was not so nice (just 1 chair in the hall) so I asked to wait in the patio. They accommodated but seemed surprised. Annoyed that my reservation was for 2 but I was 1? But that was their advice to get through the reservations page online when I called; no option for 1. Just 5 minutes. I was soon seated and relaxed. Relaxation aided by an excellent Old-Fashioned: strong, supercold, assertive bitters, the sweet oily vapors from the orange peel. Repeat: strong. I have trouble with cocktails before food so I hoped for bread and beckoned my waitress over after a few sips. Strangely, they have none, neither complimentary nor for a price. But they did have "Hearth Baked Skillet Cornbread, Broadbent's Bacon Crumble" so I ordered that though I knew I'd be taking much of it home. Several other fascinating-sounding cocktails I would have loved to try, perhaps the Sizzle Reel (grilled pineapple infused tequila, cilantro, jalapeno, lime). I decided one of their cocktails was all I could handle though I did manage an excellent glass of Pinot with my entree. The timing was not quite right because the my appetizer arrived before the bread. In fairness I did order them in that order but I did say I wanted the cornbread first with my drink. I must have said something to the runner that came off as a complaint which he passed on to the waitress. Good communication between the staff; appreciated. When she came back to check on me I assured her all was good but thanked her for checking. The cornbread was served in an individual skillet. Dense but not leady, not greasy, smoky from the bacon, sea salt flakes on top, not a trace of sweetness - the way I like it. Appetizer: "Snowy Grouper Tartare, Strawberry Leche de Tigre, Crispy Tempura". Very pretty, the colorful marinade filling half the round dish and the tartare the other half. The crispy tempura was a pleasing tactile contrast. The Leche de Tigre was delicious but perhaps too assertive for the tartare; The macerated strawberries and mint on the tartare were all that was needed. But the sauce was so good by itself that I casually mentioned to my waitress I wished I had a spoon, not really asking, and before I knew it she returned with one! Again, excellent service. I decided to test my waitress. Not being an expert I googled "what wine goes with rabbit" and consensus was Pinot Noir. I told her I was having trouble deciding among the glass offerings and she she suggested that Pinot Noir goes really well with my entree. I agreed and thanked her for the suggestion. She really knew her stuff. Entree was "Blue Ridge Rabbit Pot Pie, Lowland Carrots, Puff Pastry." Like the cornbread, an individual pie served in a skillet. Mildly seasoned (as appropriate). Puff pastry was at once flaky and stretchy; perfect texture. The rabbit tasted like chicken dark meat, though really all rabbit is classified as white meat. Al-dente carrots and onions that still had some crunch left. My only complaint - minor - is the filling could have been more liquidy with gravy. A generous size portion but which I had no trouble finishing. I would have loved to try their desserts. Just three offered, but the Robert Redford Pie (chocolate pastry cream, peanut butter cream cheese mousse, chocolate cookie crust, whipped cream, peanut brittle) called out to me. Sadly I was too full. But they also had a selection of 5 house-made ice creams - for just $4. Perfect. I got the Dulce and Banana. It was dense and smooth like a good gelato, with strong banana flavor. Again, I asked my waitress to suggest a wine to go with dessert. I told her I was getting the ice cream. She asked which because it matters. Correct. I told her. She suggested something - I forget what - which I agreed to. But they were out of it so she brought something else (again, I forget but I think a madeira and went very well), apologized and told me there would be no charge! I never would have asked but a very nice gesture. The room was bright, with muted tones of green and taupe, one wall composed of see-through nooks filled with flower vases. The feel of the room was more casual than I was expecting, and that's good. There was one couple seated near me with a 3-year-old child who was getting an amazing meal: baked oysters, garlic mushrooms from the parents' plates. No kids meal for this child - not that they were offered here. She loved it and her expressions of fascination as she looked around the room told me she was having a good time indeed. Excellent parents. I was on the fence about the rating. Minor flaws in the food, lack of bread, and limited menu options made me consider only a 4-star rating (weighted against other top-tier restaurants in this class). Every item was SO salty (and I like salt) it was inedible. We ask our server about it and he was rude. This has been a while ago, so maybe it is better. It was truly the worst meal my husband and I have ever had. read more
