One of the BEST Chinese restaurants I've been to! The food was cheap, portions were big, and tasted amazing! All of the staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive, refilling rice whenever we asked or when it looked close to running out. The owner was extremely welcoming and friendly, and a big reason we came back a second time during our 2 week stay in Houston! We tried Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Dan Dan Noodles, Spicy Chicken (Fried), Giant Meatballs with Cabbage, Duck Soup with Bamboo Shoots, Braised Pork with Szechuan Pickles, Beef Slices in Golden Hot Bowl, Eggplants in Garlic Sauce and Mapo Tofu. The Dan Dan noodles were the only dish we weren't amazed by, but everything else was so good. I personally loved the garlic sauce cooked in with the eggplants and the braised pork. The mapo tofu was had great and authentic flavors, without being too spicy. Even the rice tasted extra delicious! A great, authentic Chinese restaurant right by the medical center! It's pretty easy to miss driving down the street, but this is definitely a must-try in Houston. We ordered the mapo tofu (pictured), string beans, and spicy chicken nuggets and they were all great (and definitely nice and spicy). Only thing I noticed was that all 3 dishes were were a little too salty. Wasn't anything overwhelming, it just got pretty noticeable the more I ate. I really don't give Chinese places 5 stars often. Hu's is one of the few tested and true places that exceeds my high standards. First, the food: perfect balance of spice and flavor. Mostly Sichuan food, and Hu's has enough spice and menu variety to satisfy both spice lovers and the weak. Just need to order the right thing. I've had most the menu, and the "Sauteed Chicken with Rattan Pepper" absolutely slaps--super hot, super tasty flavor, super texture. Cumin lamb is also a favorite, and I almost never go here without ordering both of the above. I had a good chuckle reading disgruntled reviews saying Panda Express is better, or that the hot and sour soup was too hot and sour. Make sure you know what you're ordering! Prices are high for Chinese food, but I honestly don't even mind since there's almost no Chinese places that can compete with Hu's for 6-7 miles. The interior is standard, if not a cut above the norm for a Sichuan place. It's clearly family owned, and you can often see Mr. Hu hanging out or checking in with customers about their experience. Last couple times, he personally made sure to chat with my party, which was a nice touch. Since I don't really go to Chinese places for the service, this was a pleasant surprise that the service is better than most. If wanting Sichuan style food, this is the way. Only one or two places can compete in this neighborhood. read more

I don't often leave reviews for much but this food is just absolutely terrible. Yellow flavorless pan fried noodles with overcooked meat, orange chicken in a soup of overly sweet sauce with unsavory consistency and wilted broccoli and was unable to eat more than one piece. The food is amazing and fast. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant inside the 610 loop. The food is always consistently good quality.

We happened to be in that area and was craving Sichuan cuisine, and this is the first restaurant that popped up on Yelp. We got there before 7pm on a Saturday night and was able to be seated immediately. We ordered the cumin lamb, clear noodles with spicy sauce, spicy boiled beef and the intestine blood pot. The food was pretty good but not spicy enough for me but they have to cater to the geographic so I get it. My favorite dish of the night was the cumin lamb !! read more

I really like how they have lunch specials, you choose your protein and have a side of fried rice, a side if hit and sour soup, sautéed bok choy, and an egg roll. It is definitely a well rounded meal. I had chosen the spicy fried chicken bites. This was delicious as expected. It is stir fried with peppers and cabbage. The hot and sour soup was good as well with its tangy taste and bits of mushroom and egg and tofu throughout. The bok choy was a good choice for a side for the veggie and the egg roll was gigantic. I believe it was vegetarian also. I also have had the chili oil wontons - delicious pork filling wrapped in a tender wonton. I also tried their thousand layer pancake. It was a little more oily than I liked but still tasty. I had their poached fish fillets in Sichuan chili oil. This is my go to for sichuan food. It was very good. The fish fillets were prevalent and it paired deliciously well with white rice. I love how it's so greatly located in the medical center so it's a great spot for lunch. This is my first time visiting this restaurant, and I have to say, it will be my last. It is my philosophy, if food is not good the first time, I don't give you a second time. I am glad a lot of people had positive reviews, but sadly, I didn't! It is a shame when a restaurateur does not have pride in there own business to provide every patron with a positive experience. It is a shame that they will take your hard-earned money, but not provide good food. I only live one minute away from this restaurant, and when I got home, started eating, the only thing that was somewhat hot was the general tso's chicken and the egg roll. I started with the soup which was room temperature. So, I went straight to the entree. Again, the chicken was hot, taste was pretty good, but the fried rice was also room temperature--cold by the time I finished. The veggies could have been hot, which I doubt...maybe warm, because by the time I tasted, they were cold. Maybe food is better during dinner hours, but from my experience, was not good during lunch-hours. I don't eat out that much ( for reasons like above--tired of spending money and food is no good!); but when I do, I want to enjoy what my hard-earned money has purchased--$12 wasted! I guess I will continue to search until I can find an Asian restaurant that is pretty much consistently good. read more

I always pass by this restaurant and have been meaning to try it! So today, which is Valentine's Day I decided to order some to-go food to surprise my husband! Man, this place did not disappoint! I actually got 5 dishes, I forgot to take a photo of Dan Dan noodles because tbh, as soon as I got home we couldn't wait to eat. We stopped here for lunch after a disappointing day looking for cars. Parking lot was pretty full just before noon. Restaurant wasn't full when we got there but it was by the time we left. Lots of cops stopping by to eat. Waitress had an accent, so I thought maybe she preferred speaking in Chinese. But when I said we wanted Dan Dan "Mien" she repeated back ok one Dan Dan "Noodles". So I guess she prefers speaking English. Lol. We got the pork dumplings, duck and spicy chicken. Like a lot of places these days, the chicken is boneless. I actually prefer the bones in it, but I think most people would prefer boneless. The waitress warned us that it would be really spicy. But I "bu pa la", and my wife "la bu pa". Heat level turned out to be just moderate. We had recently made dumplings at home, so I felt guilty paying $11 for 8 very average tasting dumplings. But my kid's palate is limited so what is one to do. Duck was sweet, but it does say "sweet" duck on the menu. The guy who delivered it actually brought it to the table next to us. They pointed out the error but before I could tell him it was probably ours, he had taken the dish to the back. A minute later he was out with the dish and put it on our table. Dan Dan Noodles was ok but I like it better at other places. I'm surprised how many shops like this have popped up in Houston. I like them and am glad to see ma la peppercorn gaining more popularity. My dad told me it used to be banned in the USA a long time ago. Glad that's not the case anymore. read more
