General Tso's Chicken
Esther C.

If I lived closer to this restaurant, it would be my go to Chinese place. Service is efficient and friendly. Food is solid. They have a lunch special that is around $13 and comes with the main dish, fried rice, bok choy, hot and sour soup, and two small spring rolls. Good deal and really quick service. I usually get the stir fried green beans, general tso chicken, Mongolian beef, spicy fried chicken bites, and hot and sour soup. This place is usually packed. Also, the parking is really tight, so be prepared to circle the place and possible have to do some street parking.

Loved this place we came for a birthday celebration and it was Mr. Hu's birthday as well! We sang for him and gave him cake, and he sliced up a watermelon for our friends birthday. An extremely special experience!

I've long heard that Hu's Cooking is the place to go for quality Chinese food in the inner loop, and my first visit there last weekend met all expectations. The food was well plated and good portioned, which matched the premium menu prices in comparison to other Chinese restaurants. We ordered three dishes for two people, and it made for a good balanced meal. The spicy chicken was a surprising twist of Sichuan flavors with popcorn chicken like texture. Seeing that the menu featured Sichuan spices and multiple peppers, I was initially worried that the spice levels might go over my tolerance, but luckily the dishes were made less mild than the typical Sichuan restaurants to cater to the diverse customer base in inner loop. Highly recommend Hu's Cooking for anyone new to Sichuan cuisine to ease into the flavors. The reason for the one star short of five is due to the limited parking space and the ceiling in the restaurant showing signs of aging (i.e. visible insulation and missing covers). Overall, I found dining at Hu's Cooking to be a pleasant experience. The service was great, and the staff speak both Chinese and English fluently. We outstayed our meal up till the time they closed for the afternoon, and the servers still respected our space until we finished our meal and conversations and naturally got up to leave. Definitely a nice touch to the experience and well appreciated. I will be back again, and I have my eyes on trying the famous Mapo Tofu next time.

Lunch time: The food tasted fresh. The staff were nice and inviting. The food was plentiful and very fresh. Loved the soup. Loved the rice. Def returning.

Hidden gem you should try if you're in the area. The parking was somewhat confusing, but we managed to park in the back. There is also parking in the front. They utilize their space well given the size. The service was quick. We ordered the: Dandan noodles (portion was small and sauce wasn't as flavorful) Mapo tofu (great portion size with good flavor) Spicy chicken (fried) (bite sized pieces of popcorn chicken - good try) Xiao long bao (there wasn't much soup in the xlb and the portion was small, but the flavor was good) Pan fried pork dumplings (potstickers were good for what they were) Overall I'd give it a try.

This was a holiday gathering with family. My sister loves this place. We took our parents. My Dad really liked the food. They loved the eggplant. The sauce is tasty but I don't particularly like eggplant's texture. I ordered a cabbage and tofu soup. The serving is generous. The jasmine tea was served in a pretty pot. The waitresses were friendly and efficient. Everyone loved their food. Because I'm pescetarian, I didn't try the rest of the food. My favorite part was the dessert. We shared the crème brûlée and cheesecake. They're delicious. Save room for dessert.

First visit to Hu's Cooking and I'm already planning my return. I came in with every intention of trying a dry pot (which I still really want), but in a moment of basic B**** brilliance, I pivoted to the spicy General Tso's--and wow, no regrets. It totally hit the spot and scratched the itch for bold, satisfying comfort food with a real kick. I also grabbed a Basque cheesecake, though I haven't touched it yet because the General Tso's completely filled me up. (Dessert review pending--if I don't inhale it in the middle of the night.) I did pickup this time, and the whole experience was smooth--quick in and out, with friendly service and solid vibes inside. The dining area looks like a great spot to post up for a full meal, especially when I come back to finally get that dry pot. Pro tip: there's a large parking lot in the back, which is super convenient if everyone parks like a reasonable human. A few oversized trucks had things a little jammed up when I was there, but there's plenty of space when used wisely. Definitely adding this place to my regular West U rotation.

Eggplant was probably my favorite dish

I loveee Szechuan food so I was very excited to try Hu's cooking and the food did NOT disappoint. My sister and I came here on a Thursday night and there was no wait at all. Service was very fast. We ordered the spicy chicken, mapo tofu, and eggplant and everything was delicious with a nice kick. My favorite was probably the eggplant though and I'm not generally a fan of eggplant but this was sooo good. Parking is very tight in the front but they have additional parking in the back. I can't wait to come back!

Fried rice

It looks like they forgot to use soy sauce on the bottom one. I don't know why Chinese restaurants name steamed rice as fried rice these days because it's just simply not what it's supposed to be anymore! Very dissaponte

Will definitely be coming back here to try the lunch/dinner dim sum menu. We got the lunch special, which was fried rice with an egg roll and some soup and your choice of the meat to go with it for $14. I got the Kung Pao chicken, and it was soooo soft and moist. The sauce on it was yummy, and the bok choy was also delicious. The fried rice was a little dry and could have had more flavor by itself, but with the meat it was good. The cucumber chili salad was a really well-balanced dish because it was super fresh against the hot entree and soup we were having. Considering the portion size they gave, this was a steal! They also gave us 2 egg rolls instead of 1, and the hot and sour soup was delicious. The service was really fast, and they were very kind. The ambiance inside is cute and cozy too.

I've always loved coming to Hu's cooking. Quality meets quantity meets absolute yum! The service has always been pleasant and timely, while the interior is spacious and the tables have plenty of room for the generous portions. I also appreciate the extra parking in the back of the building. The Sichuan style food is spectacular. I love the eggplant, the twice cooked pork, the fish curry and the tofu! Everything is flavorful, with a pleasant kick of spice. The pork was tender and the texture was perfect. Paired with the white rice, everything was delicious. However, you can ask for the spice level to be adjusted to your preferences. Our server was extremely pleasant and attentive. Our water glasses were never empty and we were checked on all the time, which was really appreciated. Literally one of my favorite places for Chinese cuisine!

Ronald J.

I love Chinese food. Was very disappointed. The twice cooked pork is all fat, no meat.I was told it is sliced pork belly. It looks sliced strips of fatty bacon, no meat. I barely touched my food. I miss Chinese Cafe's twice cooked pork. It's real meat! The manager gave me discount rho'. It was a nice gesture. Am not sure about the rest of the menu.

Dropped in here after a function and yay for them being open later. I ordered the shrimp fried rice a scallion pancake and veggie egg rolls. Yeah not a fan of the scallion cake. It was heavy on the grease and low on the taste. I wouldn't order that again. The veggie egg rolls were also mid eeeh they were also too greasy. Maybe they need to change the oil?? The shrimp fried rice wasn't bad but it was interesting. The shrimp was lightly breaded which was kind of unexpected. But it didn't ruin the dish. Now although I didn't lovvve my food. My friend enjoyed their food so I'd be willing to try them again perhaps.

I love a good oyster po-boy, but it is hard finding one that is reasonably prices. And with ACTUAL po-boy bread rather than sandwich bread. A place like this is hard to come-by with a true New Orleans touch and even name (Calliope). This is officially my go-to spot for oyster po-boy. I do like my po-boys drenched so I will have to ask for extra sauce next time. I am excited to try their other cajun options on the menu next time :) I saw others inside eating their seafood boils.

App to find a new place to eat with no real feelings toward any particular place. Landed on Calliope's page and read the reviews. Looked good to me so I headed there. Restaurant is on the end cap of a strip plaza. Has a drive-thru as well (pleasantly surprised to see that on my way out). Parking is ample as most businesses were not open on a Saturday after 4p. Parked right in front. Dining room has about 6 tables for up to 4 people each, as well as two Hi-Top tables with seating for two each. Counter has 40" TV screens with the entire menu on them right above the cashier station. Menu cycles through pics of a few food offerings as well. Came because of the review suggestion of the Boudin egg rolls and the Suicide Shrimp Boiling Pot. Ordered both from the nice cashier who explained the entire menu, best sellers and offered modifications to the rice as well. After I paid for the order, was given a disc pager and took a seat. Dining room was clean and well lit. Waited about 15 minutes and the cashier motioned to me that my order was ready. She explained that the boiling pot sauce was placed on the side so the shrimp wouldn't be soggy and explained the other sauces that were included in my order, which were the boudin remoulade and the boiling pot garlic butter. I paid about $28 for the appetizer and main entree. They offer sliced cake, bottled flavored punches and Coke product fountain drinks, as well. It took me about 30 min to make it home and the food was still hot. The shrimp are small to medium in size; the fried rice comes with scrambled eggs, carrots, peas and onions (which I had removed). Boiling pot comes with one potato and a mini ear of corn with a boiled egg. Think: shrimp boil deconstructed. The sauce was mild flavor {offerings are Regular (no spice), Mild (medium spice) and Extra (chili sauce based spice)}. The sauce on the rice and shrimp were flavorful but I found even the mild to be too spicy for my taste (have acid reflux, so I actively avoid spicy foods). The rice was good (I added extra scrambled eggs, additional fee) and the plate is more than enough for two people. The egg rolls have cream cheese inside. Though not my taste, my roommate enjoyed it with the remoulade it comes with. Overall, between the cleanliness of the location, the service of the staff, the portion size, and value for money, I will be back to sample other items from the menu.

She came out of her stall after i came out of mine and another young lady exited hers... she stood behind us fixing her hair, (we thought she was waiting for her turn to use the sink), she sneezed in her hand and walked out the bathroom. The other young lady at the sink asked me if i witnessed her not washing her hands and i stated yes, but im heading out right now. When we walked out, the waitress was already waiting on another table. I waived down one of the waitresses to let her know someone should have a conversation with her, but coincidentally, the same woman in the restroom washing her hands had already informed her. While there's nothing extraordinary about the kind of business Taro specializes in (#1), the…read morelocation alone is worth noting. Situated directly across the street from NRG Stadium along Kirby, it's ideally placed to capture the slice of tourists and locals. Considering the wide selection of Japanese-inspired fare, the potential is there -- but unfortunately, the food is both overpriced and mediocre, much like their predecessor (#2). Things I appreciated: * Interior: I am fairly confident that one could show up with 20 people from a football game across the street and find a seat. There's enough seating in here to house an army and they've done a good job with the ambiance to keep the appearance of a faux-premium vibe. * Service: While they were generally slow on a few things, most of the staff members I've encountered were super pleasant and very transparent about what / what not to order. I appreciated this immensely. * Yakitori: No exaggeration, this is one of the better AYCE yakitori experiences I've had. The chicken and beef yakitori combos (#3) had great presentation, were juicy, and full of flavor. This was the only item where I wanted multiple orders. Things that are not great: * The price: This. My first time coming here it was $31 (Or ... $30.99), but the last time was $50. With that kind of a steep hike, you'd think they'd offer uni, toro, and some kind of premium yakitori, but too hard to justify considering their lineup of food and drink. * The name: Previously, it was simply "Taro Japanese Restaurant." As of earlier this year, it has become "Taro VIP BBQ SEAFOOD HOTPOT & BAR." * The drinks: I'm stoked they have an alcohol license and can serve wine, beer, and cocktails. But the cocktails are on another level bad. The Mexican Mule ($14.50) was too tinge too sour, the Taro Red ($14.50), Blue Hawaii ($13.50) and Tokyo Rose ($13.50) are way too sweet. Even the powdered milk teas and fruit teas felt very generic. * The sushi: I can handle low quality sushi, but there was some level of funk for almost all the salmon, tuna, and yellowtail that I ordered. It was masked a bit better in the rolls, but at some point, I couldn't order anymore. * The ramen: While I think offering any kind of ramen is a plus in the AYCE scenario, the ramen here is understandably mid. All of the tonkotsu choices are the best bet, but this is a hard pass for even folks that love noodle soup. * The spelling: While I'm typically forgiving of most menu mishaps, the fact one is being charged $50 and they can't seem to spell shoyu, fried, tartare, etc. correctly is kind of mind blowing. * Most of their baked sushi items: This includes their tataki, baby octopus, mussels, ankimo, and tartare. This is likely due to the seafood quality issue that I had alluded to earlier. * The crawfish: Skip. Don't bother ordering, even if it's peak crawifsh season since it tastes like something more from a Chinese buffet than anything resembling the kinds of crawdads from Louisiana. For a place that boasts being run by culinary graduates trained under a famous Japanese chef (#5), it's incredibly disappointing to such such variety paired with such flawed execution. One could argue Taro is more style than substance, but I hope they find a way to correct their course. ____________ (#1) All you can eat Japanese restaurant where everyone speaks Mandarin. (#2) Akashi: https://www.yelp.com/biz/akashi-houston-7 (#3) Calling all carnivores: This is your moment. (#4) "Shyoyu" "Fired" "Tartar" (#5) Takeshi Kaneko? Okay then.
