Our AC broke down during a rare San Diego heat wave. They went to my property to diagnose AC problem. They said it was a thermostat that needed to be replaced. They said that they would replace it for $368. They are insane. No thanks. I bought a Nest thermostat and installed myself for under $100. They wanted to install a crappy thermostat for $368, which takes no more than 10 minutes to install. Plus they want $199 for just going out to the property, even if they do nothing. So that's $567 they wanted for a simple 10 minute job of installing a thermostat. These prices are obscene. You can find HVAC guys that are reasonably priced and don't gouge you just to visit your property. AVOID Hurn. read more

We called Hurn for our annual preventative maintenance (PM) of our HVAC system. We were very pleased with them from the get go. Josh was here on time and was very pleasant. We were initially impressed when he asked if he should wear booties when he entered, which was very respectable to our home. His inspection was very thorough, and he thoroughly explained what he was doing, which was much more than we expected. We have an older system and he gave us peace of mind that we will get some more life out of our system with some minor cleaning. Scheduled an estimate for an install of a Stove Hood Vent. The venting is already in place, it was just a service request for a new appliance install. It has been over a week and I have yet to have an estimate. And I have called twice to follow up - 3 days after initial site visit, and a week after. So if that is how they handle prospective clients. Good luck getting the work done. Purchased a downtown San Diego condo. Realtor paid for HVAC service (definitely not Hurn), figured I was set. Nope. First time I used the unit, months later, I wake up to water dripping from the A/C access panel in the ceiling, place isn't that cool. Bad news. Next day I asked the building engineer and he recommended Hurn. Said other residents use them. Well, he just earned a nice gift at Christmas. The tech, Alan, not only solved the leak but he put on his detective cap and discovered a monkey-rigged part that was basically a ticking time bomb. A deformed PVC elbow (HVAC malpractice; my term, not Alan's, he didn't point fingers) that appears to have been partly melted by a plumbing torch required a second visit with THE RIGHT PART. Hurn's scheduling coordinator called the same day as the first visit and set up a return. Even better, she called back after a cancellation and got me in earlier. Alan was knowledgeable, efficient, took great care. His assistant Tabin, same. I don't think I'll be needing them anytime soon thanks to their fine work but if something goes wrong I'll know who to call. Went the extra mile. read more

As an update.... After being made aware of the situation, the owner's of the business made it right. I am giving them more stars for at least listening to the problem, owning it, and offering a workable solution. There's a lot to be said for a business that says "yup, we messed up, here's what we're gonna do to make it right". I'm still skeptical about their initial visit and their diagnosis but based on more information I have received it looks like some of this was on my property management company (who actually asked for the bid to replace the heater). Ultimately the other company I called gave me a bid for 50% of what the bid from Hurn was so I would say that I won't necessarily call Hurn first the next time I need something done but based on what's gone on over the past day, I would give them another shot at a competitive bid. read more

Highly recommend this place. Clearly a family owned business who hires the right people! I have a water source heat pump Carrier unit and it would stop blowing cool after a few minutes. Called these guys up on a Wednesday and they were able to squeeze me in the following day. My technician, Alan, arrived promptly and he was really cool. He's really personable and we had good conversation about 1966 Batman while he worked. He checked my unit to see if it needed a Freon recharge, that didn't seem to be the problem. He looked inside the unit and saw water was filling up the drain and not draining properly. The water-filled drain pan was tripping a security fail safe meant to stop the AC from functioning of the pan got too filled so your place doesn't flood. Alan vacuumed out the water, leveled by AC unit so it would drain properly, then checked it for proper drainage. He also put these tablets in the pan to help dissolve the build of mold or algae in the pan. Overall cost seemed like a great value. $110.00 for the first hour and then $45 per half hour or fraction thereof. They have definitely earned my future business. read more

My condo A/C unit was no longer putting out cold air, so I called Hurn because I frequently see them working on my downtown building. I was happy with the attitude and promptness of everyone I interacted with, and their service tech was even early to our appointment. I'm giving only a 2-star review though because I feel swindled on the work that was done. Justin, the service tech who handled my appointment, pinpointed the problem immediately and told me it would take a replacement part on the roof of my building to fix. And guess what? The part normally goes for $120 but he'll give me a deal for only $100 (on top of the $110 I'm already paying for the 90 minute minimum service call). Well, Ok, go ahead and put that in. Turns out its a $10 part on Amazon. No joke. So you can imagine that Hurn is likely buying in bulk at even less than I can get on Amazon, meaning this is pure markup, ON TOP OF THE LABOR CHARGE! I wonder, do the technicians get to pocket whatever the parts markup is? Is this a standard "sell" to customers? I think I'm in the wrong business. For anyone reading this review, check that your "dual run capacitor" needs to be replaced, if so you can buy a "Titan Pro" capacitor of the right rating and plug it in yourself, saving boatloads of money. read more

The Good: after my home warranty company had sent techs from three different companies plus one I had called on my own, and none of them had any idea what was causing my water source heat pump to shut down after 3 or 4 minutes, my building engineer recommended Hurn Mechanical as specialists in these kinds of HVAC units, which are apparently common to downtown condo buildings, but nowhere else. Ed from Hurn figured out immediately that the problem was a faulty thermistor, replaced it on the first visit, and it has been running fine since then. The Bad: similar to Ryan N's experience, Hurn seriously overcharged me on the replacement part. When Ed told me that he would need to replace the thermistor, but that fortunately he had one on the truck, I asked him how much it would cost. He said "about $100." On that basis, I told him to go ahead. When he finished the job, the invoice listed $157 for the thermistor, on top of the labor charge. He had not informed me of the price increase before installing the part. When handing me the invoice, he said only, "The thermistor cost more than I thought." I did not protest because I was so happy to finally have my heat pump fixed by someone who knew what he was doing. Until I did a little online research, and found that thermistors for HVAC units generally sell for between $5 and $20. Bottom Line: if you have a water source heat pump, save yourself some trouble and call these guys first. But before giving the green light for a repair, get a clear understanding from the tech as to how much the part costs, and ask, "If I check online, how much will I find that this part generally costs?" Then get it in writing. read more
