This restaurant is named after prominent landmarks in and around Hue, the ancient capital of Vietnam. So naturally it features typical Hue food: lots of small tapas-style plates (1-17 and 31 on the menu) and larger size specialties such as Bun Bo Hue, Mi Quang, Bun Hen, Com Hen. There are several similar restaurants in the area, Ngu Binh and Hue Oi just down the street come to mind. I came here for Banh Khoai specifically because I think it's the only restaurant in OC that has it on the menu. It's a little bit like Banh Xeo, i.e. a savory crispy crepe stuffed with vegetable, shrimp and pork served with lots of greens and herbs. Banh Khoai is smaller and way crispier so two of them is one portion and the dipping sauce is a complex concoction made with pork meat and liver, peanut, shrimp paste, hoisin sauce, prawn, onion, garlic, shallots...), not the simple nuoc cham made out of fish sauce. When done right the dipping sauce is so good I can slurp it down by itself. Pro tip: add a bunch of chopped chili to spice it up like people do in Hue. We came around noon on Thursday, no problem with parking, got seated right away. We ordered the #13 combo just to sample many things, Banh Khoai of course, and #1 Cha Oc. Everything was excellent. Beware when you bite into the periwinkle ham (cha oc) that there is a stalk of lemongrass inside. #13 was good, I especially enjoyed the bits of chicharrón. The Banh Khoai is very very good, better than any I had in Hue as we were there recently. The sauce was amazing, I could buy it alone and put it on everything. My wife ordered Bun Bo Hue to go. Their version is rather bland which is a sin for this dish, we prefer Ngu Binh's. The restaurant is spacious so tables are positioned nicely apart. They played traditional Vietnamese music when we were there (đàn tranh, like the Japanese koto). I am going to comment on some of the negative reviews. Someone mentioned it was hard to peel the shrimp in the four cake, well in Hue they eat the shrimp with the skin. The gal who complained about the brown bean sprouts, it gets brown pretty quick in a takeout bag shown in her photo, and she said the "food is good" yet one star? Complaints about slow service, maybe come for lunch on a weekday instead? One star customer service because the waiter did not smile? Come on, we come to inexpensive Viet restaurants in Westminster for the food, not the fake smile. We were in Vietnam for a month from Phu Quoc to Fan Si Pan, I don't remember a single smile from the wait staff. Overall 3.5 stars. We got there about 7:20 pm and thought they closed at 9 pm as that was on google. But they closed at 8 and basically they were rushing us to finish the food and pay the bill as it was after 8 and rushed us out. They didn't even clear up our table and closed up. They don't speak much English and cater to Vietnamese which validates the authenticity of the dishes. We were a party of 3 and ordered several appetizers and the Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet to share. We had the Vietnamese fried mochi dumpling, steamed rice cake with shrimp and pork skin dish, clear cake with shrimp and pork in banana leaf, and the flour cake with shrimp. Overall the food was good and the flavours were light and not too rich but the shrimps in the various dishes except the flour cake were not very fresh and was hard to peel the shell off. read more

Time for an updated review, because I just want to support this place for its consistent good BBH and service! This is not the typical trendy places, so you won't get many younger crowds here. Most of the patrons are older Vietnamese folks, the OGs BBH and Hue food frequent goers. My parents and family love this place and this is our usual place to go for BBH. Even during Covid, their togo BBH was just as good as dine-in. The place is so spacious and can hold large family gatherings. Their BBH, banh beo, cha oc, mi quang, banh uot thit nuong are all consistently good. This will continue to be our family's favorite restaurant to go to and we know almost everyone who works here. read more

I read some reviews from Yelp & I've to agreed with the positive ones. Food was delicious. The Banh Uot Thit Nuong was good & enjoyed it. My partner in crime ordered Bun Thit Nuong and he liked it as well. Partner gave waiter a generous tip because we really enjoyed our lunch here. I have mixed feelings about this place... There's some items that I really like here and some they just completely failed on. For example, the last time I came here was on a Sunday around 11am for lunch. I came with one other person and we shared their yummy banh beo. Their banh beo here is perfect. An order is about 9 goodies. They come out super warm and topped with a good amount of shrimp and pork grinds. We loved it. Their banh hoi dish that I got was also good. It came with some grilled pork and shrimp that were both perfectly cooked and seasoned. I wish they gave us more lettuce though. The bun bo hue here is terrible. It's super bland and flavorless. I do not recommend it. I do recommend their banh beo though. They have a good food and drink selection here. The inside is pretty large so there is never really a wait. It's a little underrated I think. The service is pretty good here as well. They had like 5 guys working for only a few parties. They were pretty polite compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. We decided to give this place a try after exploring the plaza that has Nok's Kitchen and Tasty Sandwiches. We wanted to eat here to support this restaurant because this place barely has any customers sometimes on the weekend. Also, we wanted to try out a new BBH place. Sadly, this place does not live up to our expectation of what good BBH is. We were excited to try out banh it ram bc I ever had those before in my life, however, the texture of the fried banh it ram was so hard it was more of a hard texture that can break someone's teeth rather than being crispy and crunchy. The flavors were lackluster and bland too. The nuoc mam was the only thing that saved that dish. Rating the banh it ram a 2/5. Now on to the Bun Bo Hue (BBH), the noodles were so hard and not soft and chewy and they tasted like someone just microwaved the BBH soup that was left overnight in the fridge. The broth was so bland and flavorless. I could barely taste any lemongrass flavor and any spice in it. It was that bland. Furthermore, the pork hoc and meats were so chewy, I wished they were more tender, soft, and less chewy. Our family said that this place has the most bland BBH (Vietnamese Beef Spicy Noodle Soup) that you could ever eat. It was that bad. Rating this a 1/5. The drinks were too artificially sweet for hot tea and iced tea. They did not taste natural at all. The only thing that I liked about this place was that the owner was super friendly and welcoming. He was so nice to us. Parking is spacious and the restaurant is pretty spacious and has some decor and paintings but that's about it. Hey, how about that? Despite all the controversy, Yelp got the rating right. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect out of the disparity between the 1 star reviews and the 4-5 star reviews of Huong Vy. Not my choice for lunch, but at least it was convenient for us. Maybe the best thing that they have going is a large dining room with a maximum occupancy of 80. The seats are comfortable and the restaurant looks fairly clean. The music is classic Vietnamese with words. The food draws largely from central Vietnamese cuisine. We split some smaller dishes as appetizers. The #9 Banh Beo Chen ($5.95) is a classic tiny rice pancake with dried shrimp, mung bean paste, crispy onions, and green onions that is served with fish sauce. This one has a bit of a twist with delicious bits of relatively fresh pork rinds. Also on the table was the #8 Banh It Ram ($4.95) with similar toppings as Banh Beo (sans pork rinds), but the base is crispy fried rice, and it's topped with a sticky rice dumpling with a whole shrimp inside. Both dishes were actually quite good. I sampled a couple of dishes other than my main entree. I sipped a bit on some #19 Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet ($6.75) broth, and it seemed reasonably tasty although a little lacking in spices and heat. I also had a heaping spoonful of the #25 Bun Hen ($6.75), which had similar noodles to the Bun Bo Hue, but was served with a pretty tasty broth on the side and has baby clams as the protein. This would probably be my order if I had to eat here again. I ordered for myself the #32 Com Bo Luc Lac Huong Vy ($7.95), aka shaking rice. It's not a central Vietnamese specialty, but the restaurant apparently feels strongly enough about their recipe anyway they've appended their name to it. The first bad sign was the plain white rice served on the plate. Most often, the rice accompanying the dish is a rice that's lightly red due to tomato flavor. This white rice was a little on the dry side and was simply boring. The meat was actually tender and cut into decent cube-like portions. However, it was underseasoned and undermarinated, and it was somehow a little dry. They tried to use a crutch of salt and pepper with a lime wedge, but that additional seasoning is atypical for this dish. I considered requesting more fish sauce but decided that I'd just try to entertain my taste buds with the accompanying components, which included some relatively good sauteed onions and a side salad of lettuce, tomato, and cucumber. It could've worked, but when I moved to the light broth provided on the side, I found little more than a watered down chicken broth flavor. Seriously, guys? The prices seem pretty good at Huong Vy, and there are some decent dishes, but they could stand to do a lot better in such a hub of Vietnamese food as Westminster. I probably won't be back anytime soon, and it's safe for everyone else to avoid this restaurant. read more

I wanted noodles. Hot soupy noodles. It could've been a bowl of bun rieu, or pho, but I saw Huong Vy and remembered reading something about it and just turned into the parking lot and went inside. You couldn't tell from the outside that it was one of those new, nicely decorated Vietnamese restaurants. It looked clean until I went to sit at a table and that was when my arms stuck to the table like a sweet sugary syrup had been coated all over the table's surface. I thought this place was relatively new? What's up with the tabletops?? Spray something on it for god's sake before wiping it down! The guy came over to take my order. I ordered mi quang which I've had at other places before and remembered I liked. I also ordered soda chanh, but the guy looks at me and said 'what?". Now, I'm not Vietnamese but I thought soda chanh was known at ALL Vietnamese restaurants -- at least in my experience, every Vietnamese restaurant I've been to since now has had soda chanh. I looked at the 'beverages' portion of the menu and guess what? No soda chanh. But I guess it wasn't so much as 'we don't have it on the menu' which boggled my mind, but the fact that this guy did not know what soda chanh was. Mi quang arrived -- dry! An accompanying bowl of soup arrives alongside. I tasted the soup.... wasn't bad. The mi quang also has a lot of toppings. I tried to mix the bowl up and the noodles just broke apart. I added some of the soup to it hoping to alleviate the dryness but even so, the noodles were mealy, doughy and extremely overcooked. They were absolutely awful. The ingredients included chicken, shrimp, fish cake and some crab roe. Chicken was so dry, but there was a lot of it. I ended up eating the 3 shrimps, one piece of fish cake and none of the noodles. I left extremely unsatisfied and still very hungry. Maybe the other dishes are better, but after the dismal mi quang, I doubt I'll come back again. I'm used to eating the mi quang at Nem Nuong Khanh Hoa which IMHO is still the best. Having nice decorations and being clean really means nothing if your food is subpar. I tried their com hen (clams and rice) and I didn't like it as much as the version I've had at Quan Vy Da. Here everything comes in one bowl with the broth on the side, and I didn't like how my rice cracker was all crumbled up. Previously I'd had it with the rice cracker whole and I had to break off the pieces. Not sure which is the more "authentic" way, but was not a fan of everything coming in one bowl. Plus, not as many clams as at QVD. But the flavor was good and I thoroughly enjoyed their Bánh bèo chén (little dishes with rice cake and dried shrimps and fish). My friend thought his Bun Bo Hue was all right, but nothing to knock his socks off. They had VERY sticky tables here, btw, but they do take credit cards! Overall, an OK experience. UPDATE: I was informed by a person in the know that that is the traditional Com Hen, and the dish I had at Quan Vy Da was something else to do with clams, lol. My husband & I ordered the Bun Bo Hue & my son ordered the Com Bo Luc Lac. I really like your Bun Bo Hue. Broth has a nice red-orange color to it, which is how correct Bun Bo Hue broth should be. The Bun itself, thick like Udon noodles; that's also how authentic Bun Bo Hue noodles should be as well. As for the meats, generous amounts of pork blood, meat ball, & shanks. Broth taste, spot on, not too salty & very aromatic & rich in flavors. Now, the reason why I did not give you guys a perfect 5/5 & decided to do a point deduction is because of the Com Bo Luc Lac. I tried my son's dish. Your Bo is a bit small & kinda dry in taste. For Bo Luc Lac, the Bo "cubes" need to be a bit bigger & more chunkier. I recommend make the Bo "cubes" about 1 inch x 1 inch x 1 inch when cooked (meaning that when you cut a freshly raw beef, the cube would have to be ~1.5 inch x 1.5 inch x 1.5 inch, so when it cooked, the beef cube would shrink a bit). For the taste of the Bo Luc Lac, taste is exceptional, moderately sweet & moderately salty, that's how good Bo Luc Lac should be. Only issue is the appearance, therefore, recommended make the beef cubes slightly bigger to make it chunky. Restaurant environment, very nice, clean, well maintenance. Service. Excellent! Especially I like how the Com Bo Luc Lac dish come out first before the Bun Bo Hue. Usually, a typical Vietnamese restaurant would be the soups like the Bun Bo Hue or the Pho come out before the solid foods like the Com Bo Luc Lac or the Com Tam Bi Cha Thit Nuong, where the customers who order the solid foods have to wait a bit longer than the customers who order the liquid soup foods. Therefore, I really like your restaurant service is that you serve the solid foods quicker than the liquid soup foods. Next time, I will try your Com Ga Roti. I hope the Ga Roti is good size, rich in flavor, & has a nice moist meaty texture. Be careful not to overdone the Ga Roti, it may cause dryness in the chicken meat if overdone. I'll update this comment on my next visit. Overall, I'll grant you the current score of 4/5. Great work. I was a woman on a mission. I really really wanted some banh beo. And after a few failed attempts this place seemed like a last resort for us - prior to me dying from hunger. To be honest I was very wary when I first read through the first few reviews, but if its one thing I have learned about Vietnamese dining is that have to take reviews with a grain of salt and what the Americans refer to as poor customer service is often considered normal service. And in all honesty all I cared about was getting my banh beo fix. The restaurant was very spacious with ample seating and overall was very clean and the workers did a great job clearing out dishes quickly as soon as each patron finished their meals. We we quickly seated and given their small limited menu, a few option of mi (egg noodles) and different banh fixings. I was delighted to see that not only was there were two banh beo options, plated and then in individual dishes. I was even more excited to see banh bot loc on the menu, both wrapped in banana leaves and plated. Our orders were quickly taken and waters were quickly brought to our tables. And within 10 minutes our first dish appeared at the table. The banh bot loc was hot and warm from the kitchen and topped with freshly fried shallots and scallions. For those of you who are unfamiliar these little mini dumplings are made from tapioca flour so they are quite slimy so be warned. These cakes were soft and not the least bit hard and dry as I have experienced in the past. It is served along side a small dish of nuoc mam that was a good mix of sweet and salty. Each table is equipped with dishes of chilis and pepper pastes to allow for you to customize to your desired spicy level. Next up came the banh beo, served beautiful on bamboo trays in the small dishes, topped with dried shallots, pork rinds and shredded shrimp. I prefer eating them off the small dishes over the plated version for two reasons. For one, the nostalgic memories of me awaiting my mom lifting each little platelet from the steamer. And two, everyone loves to play with their food! Getting to spooning each cake from each plate requires a nice technique. The cakes were a bit dense but tasted delectable with the nuoc mam and toppings. Me and my bf missed this place and it took us quite a while to go and find it. I thought the restaraunt was located on the intersection of the busy cross-streets, but little did we know that we had missed it when there was so much going on and cars blocking our view of the small plaza. The place is nicely decorated, and is quite a nice size. One of the workers from the restaraunt was doing almost like a valet service type of thing, because people who wanted to eat there couldnt find parking from other people parking wrongfully just to go across the street to the festival. So, that was pretty cool of them. Anyways, so we ordered 2 bun bo hue, spring roll, egg roll, and a combination plate of banh beo, banh loc, etc. I like my bun bo hue extra spicy, so I needed extra satay sauce because they dont make it that spicy just in case customers can not handle it. The egg rolls were plentiful, and the spring rolls were the most softest that I had ever tasted, PLUS they give you four normal rolls instead of 2 rolls that they cut into four, so that was huge brownie points! My parents were ranting to me about this place on their recent visit. I'm from a family that specializes in Hue food. We used to own a restaurant and my dad was the head cook, so we are quite picky with certain dishes. For them to be impressed with this place spoke volumes for me. When I came here with my family, we ordered the same dishes they tried previously: Mi Quang, Bun Bo Hue, Com Hen, Banh Beo, and the Banh Combo. To our surprise, none of the soup dishes were good at all. They had absolutely no flavor, actually had the wrong flavors, and we almost didn't want to finish our meal. We were starving too! We were very confused... My parents said their food was much better before. Unfortunately, I don't know if we will be back for a while. On another note, the restaurant is pretty nice and clean.
