What a fantastic restaurant! Service was prompt and staff expressed appreciation for our business and all were warm and friendly. They made us feel very welcome and at home. We had an appetizer of vegetable egg rolls that were perfect--and so was the sauce. As a nice surprise: there was a nice assortment of vegetarian dishes with tofu. We had main dishes of Buddha's Delight (with tofu) and Moo Goo Gai Pan. Both were cooked to perfection with generous portions. I was on Christmas vacation (2016) and decided to order some food for pick up. The service over the phone was great. The food was not. I also felt liked it was waaaay overpriced. I little tub of lo mein and an order of sesame chicken was almost $30, nothing else. Not even soda. My girlfriend thought that I ordered crab rangoon (which wasn't even listed on their menu) and that they simply forgot to put it in with our food. When we got back to our hotel room and prepped to eat, we realized they didn't give us any napkins, soy sauce, or forks!!! I had to go to the hotel lobby and ask the person behind the service desk for forks. We ate Chinese food without soy sauce. That's like eating fries without ketchup. I can find way better Chinese food where we live (Chicago) around $5 for a plate, including a can of soda.. Good thing we live in the city. read more

After chosing this place as convenient location, I was amazed that this place had 4 stars. I feel that citizens of Bloomington or people that work near by have been duped or are being entirely too nice. The experience is not worth $10 lunch price tag and gets single star just for having food. Selction is limited to 12 dishes, everything is smothered in grease and vast majority of dishes are grossly overcooked. The only acceptable dish today was mushroom and chicken. Quality of the remaining choices made one wonder whether to call thw county services or just buy some antidiarrheala. Fried rice was near black, had too few vegetables. White rice was actually "white people" rice, rather than traditionally prepared rice. Spicy chicken was murdered twice and then smothered in burnt sauce. Sour pork and lemon chicken were bone dry. Mystery meat on the stick was so chewy it should come in minty fresh flavour. Egg drop soup was lacking the egg drop and hot and sour had nothing but brother and egg (no veggies, no mushrooms, no soy). Was considering giving second star for cleanliness (the place is immaculate as far as Chinese restaurants go), but that is just legally mandated sanitation. read more

A co-worker of mine has been going to Hunan for a number of years, and suggested the group give it try. What did I discover? One of the best Chinese buffets around. The restaurant is somewhat hidden in a small strip mall in Bloomington, and very unassuming. The interior represents every Chinese Restaurant you've been to in your life...with a small buffet in the back of the room. The selection doesn't appear to be anything special, judging from the size of the buffet...but what it lacks in selection, it makes up for in taste. I had a sampling of most everything they were offering from the Egg Drop Soup, to Lo Mein noodles, but was blown away by the subtle heat of the Spicy Chicken. I had two heaping servings of the stuff, and had I not gotten completely stuffed...would have been back for more. The wait staff are very open, friendly, and punctual. One of the staff remembered my co-worker as having been there before, which impressed me. The cost of the buffet is $7.25, and tea is free. My grandparents and uncle have going here since they first opened and when I moved to the Twin Cities they introduced me to this magical place. Sesame chicken will never be the same to me. The buffet that they have at select dinner services is one the best I have ever had. Like most non-buffet Chinese restaurants the buffet reflects the higher quality ingredients you find in their menu as well as the use of in-house sauces. While the buffet is the start for most newcomers it is the menu courses where you become hooked; quality ingredients and great sauces make this a restaurant not to miss. Their sesame chicken in particular is an amazing mixture of quality breaded chicken and the most amazing spicy sesame sauce you will ever have. It is not just orange chicken with sesame seeds spread on top. Hunan is located in Bloomington off of American Blvd. and Penn Ave. More specifically, it's located in the small strip mall behind Sonic/Wendy's. We went here on a Friday evening for the dinner buffet. Upon entering the first thing you'll notice is the size of the interior. The restaurant seems rather small, although it very likely accommodates a respectable number of people. After being seated by someone up front, the waiter will ask if you'd like a beverage. Another reviewer said that tea is free; we had sodas, so I'm not sure (they had Pepsi products, if anyone cares to know). If it is free, you may want to have some because-- judging by the carafes being brought out to the other diners-- Hunan seems to have more than green and black. If ordering the buffet, the next step is grabbing a plate and sampling the selection. Because of the layout of the place, it may seem like the buffet is small. Compared to other buffets it probably is a bit smaller, but Hunan actually has a sizable selection of dishes. They had Sesame Chicken, Buddah's Delight, Kung-Pao, Chicken with peppers and onions, and even some really tasty spicy lamb with green onions. Also available: a mild slaw, cantaloupe, jello, chicken wings, spring rolls, egg rolls, and more. I'm petty sure I saw a soup up there, too, but I never sampled any. All in all, the food was great. The decor of the restaurant is really good as well. Semi-dark earth tones and ambient lighting with tastefully placed paintings. The place was really clean, something I haven't seen too often at Chinese buffets. The waitstaff around the store are all over the place getting everything done quickly. Our drinks were filled instantly upon completion, our plates whisked up before we reached the buffet to grab a new one, and tables cleaned off as soon as customers left. Today started out normal (aside from the blender exploding almond milk and strawberry all over) with me forgetting to bring a lunch to work. Somewhere around 9:30 I started getting a craving for some Chinese food. Chinese food that was decent and wouldn't make me feel bad about myself. Such a thing not existing in Richfield, I did a quick googling of the area and decided on Hunan Restaurant. I had heard/read good things. I arrived probably just after the big lunch rush, was seated immediately and I head over to the buffet. I try to avoid buffets because they make me sad. But sometimes I can't help myself. The options were somewhat limited but I consider that a good thing because then a restaurant can focus on having quality food, which Hunan did. Also I often feel compelled to try some of everything at a buffet and that can lead to disaster. The sesame chicken, fried rice and cream cheese wontons were all quite delicious. I wouldn't say it was out of this world, but it was certainly better than average. The staff was attentive; I was never out of soda and my plate disappeared like magic while I went back for another. One thing some people may not like, but I don't mind, is that the tables are quite close together. This along with riding solo, I was able to participate in one of my favorite pastimes. Eavesdropping. I heard all about how the neighborhood is going downhill and about some cross-eyed girl who is lucky that she has a good personality. So if I ever have another moment of weakness and need to hit up a buffet, I'd return. Best Chinese restaurant I've been to in the cities. Their lunch buffet is great, and often frequented by my co-workers and I. Delicious! The favorites among our group are Sesame Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Cream Cheese Puffs, and the Stir Fry Green Beans. Just recently we had staff lunch plans go awry, and in 1 hour Hunan was able to make enough appetizers and entrees for 20 of us as a pick-up order. They are amazing! I went in for lunch a few weeks ago and it wasn't bad, but it surely was not what I've had for the last 8 years. They changed the lunch menu and no longer give you a crab cheese wonton, the eggrolls are not as good, and the sesame chicken is bland. When I travel for work I tend to look to dine at either a Chinese or Japanese restaurant. This is the second time I've gone to Hunan on my travels through the Twin Cities area. It is convenient when I choose to stay at the Bloomington Embassy about a block away. For me, it's a tell tale sign when I go to an ethnic restaurant and majority of the patrons are of that ethnicity. That was the case on the evening that I stopped in for my take-out order. There were 5 tables sat and all 5 were of Asian decent. I ordered two pint entree orders and one app. I went with the Cantonese Egg Rolls to try something different for an appetizer. They were very yummy and definitely different that the typical egg roll. Extra crispy on the outside with almost a filo dough warp and had tons of flavor inside. I'm pretty sure I tasted some curry or something in the inside mixture. I also ordered the Szechuan Chicken and Mandarin Beef. I preferred the Chicken dish the most out of the two, however, I would recommend both. When I eat Chinese, I always avoid the deep fried chicken dishes and go for the slice chicken that is pan friend. The veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly...to the point where they were still slightly crunchy. Overall, I would say that this is a high quality Chinese restaurant for the area. The service was quick...about 10 minutes from the time I placed my ordered...and the service was very friendly...they offered me a free beverage as I waited for my take-out order. When they were grabbing our bags from the back we took a look at the dinner buffet. Holy moly it looked amazing! Steaming, fresh, hot, great variety! Definitely going to come back to try the Buffett. One thing I witnessed that made me smile was a small line ( us and one other) was forming at the register when a regular customer walked in. This place did an amazing job at satisfying my craving for Chinese food for the month. Was greeted by a very friendly waiter - he was probably happy to get some customer since the restaurant was completely empty as is tradition with Asian restaurants during off-hours. We ordered chicken dumplings as a starter and they were excellent. Their main entrees are HUGE, more than enough to share between two people - granted we are health freaks and like to watch our portions, if you like to pig out then you should probably go for one on your own. We got the sesame chicken and it was up to snuff. Very generous serving of steamed rise as well. I have never been disappointed with Hunan. I go for lunch periodically and one time I went two consecutive days. This place just rocks. The buffet isn't huge, which I feel works in their favor. The 10 or so major dishes they have are carefully crafted and are each delicious in their own way. Me and guys from work all find something we really enjoy. I'm partial to the spicy chicken and egg foo young, my fellow compatriot loves their sesame chicken, another enjoys the thick sweet glazed potatoes as well as the similar chicken dish. Service is spot on. They are constantly aware of empty glasses and dirty dishes. They are very friendly and prompt with the check. All the workers are great and friendly and really good at keeping the food fresh and getting people through there, because it's always packed during the lunch hour for their buffet. I used to come here years ago, before all those Sichuan restaurants opened up around town. Hunan was one place where you could get something more exciting than subgum chow mein. Then I moved to the other side of town, and I just haven't gotten out this way. But I was in the neighborhood this evening and thought--Hey! Hunan! The menu doesn't look like anything special--the selections look like what you'd see at most American Chinese restaurants. I read carefully and ended up picking dry cooked green beans, Hunan lamb, and kung pao chicken. The lamb really was done Hunan style--strongly flavored without a lot of goopy sauce, and I loved it. The kung pao chicken had a sweet crunchiness to it that reminded my dining companion and me of the "Confucious prawns" that used to be served at the Princess Garden. It was outstanding--I'd go back just for that. Dry cooked string beans were the perfect doneness and were tasty, although they weren't the high point of the meal. Prices are middle of the pack; decor is a step up from standard strip mall ethnic restaurants. Service at Chinese restaurants is often brusque and businesslike, but this our waiter was exceptionally friendly and pleasant. read more

This was our first visit. We had Seasame Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and Eggplant Beef Ribs served in a hotpot. All were served sizzling hot and were delicious. Our knowledgable server provided suggestions on Cantonese dishes. Drinks were continuously filled and almond cookies as well as fortune cookies were served with our check.
