I was really feeling adventurous and wanted to try another local Chinese takeout spot that served more options. (Goodies is my go-to usually but they don't have Egg Foo Young!) Tried this place and wasn't sure about the reviews since they ranged from a few months ago to many years ago. Took a chance and sadly it was a miss. The food was not disgusting but it also wasn't memorable by any means. Everything was bland and in desperate need of seasoning. The fried rice looked strange. The general tso wasn't crispy and the sauce was bland. We ate the meal out of hunger but not satisfaction. And it will be the last time I ever go back sadly. So, lately I've been on the hunt for a new Chinese restaurant. The place that I used to frequent went under new management and decided to take short cuts. It's been just over a year, and it's been rough finding something in the area that can even come close. It's gotten to the point that I wasn't even about to try Hunan Express, because of how terrible the other places in the area have been. However, I'm glad I did. The food here is not perfect, but it's decent. They have huge portions, and the food actually has flavor. Last night we ordered the General Tso's chicken, 5 pc wing combo, and sweer & Sour chicken. We also ordered fried wontons, and the meals came with egg rolls and soup. The General Tso's chicken came in a container filled to the brim with pork fried rice. The chicken could've been crispier, and less saucy, but it was decent. I feel like if I specified how I wanted it, they could easily adjust it for me as other have in the past. I just don't like my chicken swimming in the sauce. The sweet & sour chicken was spot on, and actually tasted similar to the carryouts around where I grew up at. A little soy sauce on the chicken and the salty from the soy sauce goes well with the sweet and sour combination of the sauce. The wontons were meh! Hard over fried and not that good, but the hot and sour soup was on the money. The egg rolls were decent, but a little greasy. I wish they were crispier, but outside of having to remove some of the grease they were pretty good. The wings were also solid, my only hold up is that they break the wings down into flats and drumsticks and count them each. So a 5 pc wing is only 2.5 wings (3 flats and 2 drumsticks or vice versa), and the fries were soggy. I feel like even though the food isn't perfect, it's still solid. It's not just completely bland or bad. I'm okay with adding soy sauce to something I feel needs a boost, but I am against food that is just not prepared well, and I think that's where Hunan Express edges the other guys out. On top of that the store is clean, and that's something I feel you have to pay attention to these days. The thing is I'm not looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, I'm looking for good Chinese carryout food. I'm looking for something quick and reliable, on a night when I'd rather hang with the kids and be lazy. I can't say that this is going to be our new weekly replacement, but atleast between here, and 2 other spots that require some driving, we can get by...overall I'd give the food a 6.5 - MAYBE 7 out of 10 read more

This is their chicken chow mein with extra noodles. I called their restaurant and told them their chow mein had no noodles. They told me it doesn't come with noodles, but then why does it have an option for extra noodles? Also google chow mein and you'll see it has egg noodles. Their food is bland and not accurate. For a local place the hot & sour soup is point on! Egg rolls perfection. Some dishes vary, but when you try different ones, you will find your sweet point type go to dish. I sincerely hope they reopen and recover after the pandemic, because their food and service were always great. Is this the best Chinese food I've ever had? Well, no. But, golly, it was really decent and it was pretty much the best in the Crofton area! I always had good experiences with their service, too, regardless of picking up or delivery. They were usually really fast, as well... almost always beat their estimated time. My favorite dishes here were their soups, the pu-pu platter (great sample of their apps!), and the combo meals. They always packed them full of veggies and rice. I'm a steamed rice guy, but their fried rice was always pretty good. I was also a fan of their egg rolls. The filling was nice and flavorful, and it was very well seasoned. The outer skin had a great crisp to it, and it was really filling by itself. I would sometimes make a meal from two or three egg rolls and a small soup. I can't honestly say I've ever been hungry after eating here. We typically have leftovers if we're not sparse in our ordering. But, that's not a bad thing either. It's just a great value for the price. Here's hoping their back to their previous form in June! We've been going here on and off since 2007. Always been good. Lately we've been going more frequently and always getting the same thing. Crispy beef and beef lomein. Last Friday, ordered our usual online. Got it home, and surprise. The beef was definitely not crispy and the lomein was not the usual lomein noodles, they looked like spaghetti noodles. I used to live in this neighborhood in Crofton and used to visit this location back in 2005/2006. There were so many other Chinese places popping up in the area at that time that this place kinda got lost a little. However, they are still alive and kicking for a reason. And the others are now gone. I actually went in because it was recommended by my uncle. He will travel far and wide for some food! So, upon the recommendation, I went back in for another round. Hunan Express is a small little restaurant located in the Crofton shopping center housed next to a Bon Chon Chicken and a nearby Subway. It is a small carryout with a family vibe to it. I went in on an Saturday afternoon while running errands. I ordered over the phone and wen it to pick it up. I ordered shrimp fried rice and an eggroll. The food was ready in no time. The customer service was not good or bad, matter of fact there really wasn't any. But who cares, I was here for lunch. I received my food and went home. The shrimp fried rice was pretty good. I ordered the lunch special. I was pretty pleased with my food and will go back to order more items. Definitely decent. read more

I placed my order for shrimp fried rice and was told it would be 15 minutes. When I arrived 30 minutes later, it took another 10 minutes before it was ready. Now fried rice should not take long and I get that it was a busy Saturday and that would have been fine had I not found hair in my food. It's COVID-19 and not only should a cook wear a mask but they should be wearing a hair net. I found what was naked to the eye, I'm afraid of what I couldn't see. I've given this place more than enough chances, but I think they've just had their last one. The food is certainly prepared quickly enough - maybe that's the problem. My wife and I ordered the combination fried rice and combination lo mein lunch specials. A smallish egg roll is provided with each lunch special. They certainly give you plenty of food for the price and that would be a huge plus if the food wasn't basically tasteless. Maybe there would have been some flavor to it if the meat wasn't so sparse. I'm being extra generous by giving this place four stars, especially when Chinese take-out places seem to be all the same. But it's the little differences that make this joint a consistent favorite among the sea of others in the Bowie/Crofton/Odenton area. First, the girl working the counter is always pleasant, whether you're ordering by phone or taking it to go. I've even eaten in the little front waiting area, just sat down and went at a carton of lo mein. She chatted me up and recognized me the next time I walked in. Second, the portions are HUGE. The dinner specials are redonk. It's like 5lbs of food plus a pint of soup. Lastly, the food is great. Granted, I really only eat the veggie or shrimp options so I can't speak for the whole menu. But for me, the hot 'n sour soup is always the deciding factor. Some places it's all tofu and mushrooms (meh, more bean sprouts, plz). Some places its neither hot nor sour. At Hunan Express it's like the perfect ratio of all the ingredients plus extra sour. Ask for it extra hot and you'll find a dried pepper floating on top. Me likey! And the lo mein is never dry. The last time I ordered from Hunan L'Rose I was very disappointed. So if you ever get a craving to order Chinese take-out and sit and watch t.v. with your honey while sipping beer (which I do, quite frequently), I highly recommend Hunan Express. I ordered from here for the second time last night. This place really impressed me. I ordered a dinner combination meal which came with an egg roll, won ton soup, and pork fried rice. I also ordered a pork lo mein on the side. The fried rice and the lo mein was outright delicious. The won tons were firm and not loose or mushy and had good flavor. The egg roll was crispy (even after being delivered) and they provide the traditional spicy yellow mustard that most places seem not to use anymore. I ordered sweet and sour chicken to share with my daughter and it was ok. It's not something I normally order but it wasn't too bad. Delivery took about a half hour to Odenton which I found to be extremely fast. I was very impressed and this will now be my go to place for Chinese. An added bonus is being able to order via grub hub on my smart phone. Order, tip and pay from your phone? You can't beat it. read more

Thank God this place exists, or I'm convinced the Annapolis area would be devoid of a decent take-out place. There are a few dine-in restaurants here, but when it comes to strictly take-out, Hunan Express is legit. How legit? Let's put it this way: we moved away from the Crofton area in January and still get food from this place because in my opinion, it's worth the 30 minute drive. My wife and I order here all the time, and I'm just now reviewing them (because I had some Chinese food that was so bad I had to review it, and I need to cleanse my soul after writing a one-star review). Our typical order includes the kung pao chicken combination (with wonton soup, chicken fried rice, and an egg roll), orange or Hunan chicken, and some sort of shrimp item (usually lo mein or Singapore noodles). The food is delicious, the Hunan style cuisine is authentic as it gets, and the variety is enjoyable. The only complaints I may have about the food are minor: carrots and celery do not belong in kung pao chicken, there's not nearly enough meat in the hunan style dishes, and the orange chicken is often a bit too crunchy for the average human. Also, the lemon chicken and sweet and sour chicken are nothing to write home about: it's just deep fried balls of breaded chicken with some mediocre sauce to dip them in. But honestly, even with all the filler, the kung pao chicken dish contains so much meat, it's absurd to think that one person could ever eat it all in one sitting, especially with rice. The same could be said of the orange chicken, which has some excellent sauce. Their wonton soup is quite amazing, and it satisfies my picky wife (picky about soup, that is) and reminds her of our favorite soup restaurant in Hong Kong. One thing to note: if you're looking for spicy food, this is not your place. But I've also never asked them to kick it up a notch, so perhaps that could be arranged if a spicy dish is something you crave. Another great thing about this place is their prices. They are very reasonable, especially for the huge portion sizes, and their website boasts coupons that you can use every time you come in. (I know the difference between lo mein and chow mein) I called in to see if there was any way I could get something else because this was quite frankly gross. So if you call during lunch hours make sure to tell them you want lunch. If you dont, they will charge you for full orders and the leave out the egg rolls. So all in all what should have cost $21 ended up costing me $35. All because they feel it ok to swindle customers over semantics. Seriously! If someone is calling during lunch time! If you are hungry, make sure you get your order right because if they get it wrong(had to repeat it over 2 times), you will have to wait another hour just to eat.
