Spring roll, flaky, crisp, filling was perfect

My lovely bride is returning from a trip to Ohio today, she isn't in until this afternoon...so one more strip mall chinese combo meal. She is a bit more "refined" so these kinds of places are not her cup of green tea. I enjoy high end stuff for sure, but there is something nostalgic about the jumble of amercanized stuff heaped on marginal fried rice that just works for me. Hunan Rose does this well. I got kung Pao chicken combo. It was quite good, just spicy enough to mimic actual Chinese dishes. The rice is a bit basic, but the texture is great . I walked in, very pleasant older gentlemen running the front/phone and register. It was out in about 10 minutes. You can't get Popeye's in 10 minutes and their food is already cooked and right there behind the clerk, just needs to make it into a box. Why is it that place like this are ten minutes champs! Prep, prep and more prep, organized and hustle is my guess. Someone else mentioned that its a bit dated inside. Yes it is and that for me was quite charming. It looks like the kinds of places you should be in a jacket and dresses for. The music playing was a old classic soft jazz version of some old classic that I can't think of the name of. If the chance arises to come back I certainly will, good place for this style/level of cuisine, good price, fast service.

Should have checked the reviews, but we've been looking for a new chinese place. After trying Hunan L'Rose, the search continues. We ordered the szechuan chicken & chicken fried rice. It was all good until I was just about finished when I noticed the dead flying insect in szechuan sauce. Needless to say, not pleased. Tried calling the place. No answer.

Shrimp spring rolls were extremely salty, and French fries were under cooked, had to put on the oven to cook more.

Carryout: Triple Delight (sliced beef, chicken, shrimp, straw mushrooms, baby corn, water chestnuts, broccoli, snow peas, brown sauce)
    Lia H.

We got carryout here from here in late February. We ordered a Triple Delight (sliced beef, chicken, shrimp, straw mushrooms, baby corn, water chestnuts, broccoli, snow peas, brown sauce), Chicken with Broccoli, Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Lo Mein, white rice, and an order of Crab Rangoon. The crab rangoon was really good. They were crispy and we liked the filling inside. My mom liked her chicken and broccoli. The pieces of chicken were pretty big. My dad enjoyed the triple delight. There was quite a bit of shrimp throughout. The beef was tender. He felt there could have been more chicken. I ordered the chicken lo mein. It tasted fine, but there was much filler with the onions and other things added. Overall, we enjoyed what we ordered. We're a bit of a drive away from this restaurant, so if we were in the area I could see us ordering from here again.

Nothing special about their food. Very typical Chinese. Still my go to when I'm craving Chinese food.

We had the freshest and most delicious shumai, shrimp crab claw, beef chow fun noodles, and Vietnamese spring rolls I have EVER had (including 7 corners and Ellicott City)...and the grossest bathroom and general eating area cleanliness I have ever experienced in an Asian restaurant EVER. I don't get how they get a 100% health score, when the window screen behind my sister's chair had a dead roach, the air intake above us was moldy and filthy, the women's bathroom sanitary sanitation products container was filthy and didn't look like it had been cleaned in about two years, and the floors were disgusting. I am not sure if the ice in my iced tea was dirty, but I can guess it might be, based on what I saw. So, question...do I go back and just get carry-out risking food poisoning??

Tried this place and wasn't sure about the reviews since they ranged from a few months ago to many years ago. Took a chance and sadly it was a miss. The food was not disgusting but it also wasn't memorable by any means. Everything was bland and in desperate need of seasoning. The fried rice looked strange. The general tso wasn't crispy and the sauce was bland. We ate the meal out of hunger but not satisfaction. And it will be the last time I ever go back sadly. I wanted this to be good but spent the whole time convincing myself it was good than actually enjoying it.

It's been just over a year, and it's been rough finding something in the area that can even come close. It's gotten to the point that I wasn't even about to try Hunan Express, because of how terrible the other places in the area have been. However, I'm glad I did. The food here is not perfect, but it's decent. They have huge portions, and the food actually has flavor. Last night we ordered the General Tso's chicken, 5 pc wing combo, and sweer & Sour chicken. We also ordered fried wontons, and the meals came with egg rolls and soup. The General Tso's chicken came in a container filled to the brim with pork fried rice. The chicken could've been crispier, and less saucy, but it was decent. I feel like if I specified how I wanted it, they could easily adjust it for me as other have in the past. I just don't like my chicken swimming in the sauce. The sweet & sour chicken was spot on, and actually tasted similar to the carryouts around where I grew up at. A little soy sauce on the chicken and the salty from the soy sauce goes well with the sweet and sour combination of the sauce. The wontons were meh! Hard over fried and not that good, but the hot and sour soup was on the money. The egg rolls were decent, but a little greasy. I wish they were crispier, but outside of having to remove some of the grease they were pretty good. The wings were also solid, my only hold up is that they break the wings down into flats and drumsticks and count them each. So a 5 pc wing is only 2.5 wings (3 flats and 2 drumsticks or vice versa), and the fries were soggy. I feel like even though the food isn't perfect, it's still solid. It's not just completely bland or bad. I'm okay with adding soy sauce to something I feel needs a boost, but I am against food that is just not prepared well, and I think that's where Hunan Express edges the other guys out. On top of that the store is clean, and that's something I feel you have to pay attention to these days. The thing is I'm not looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, I'm looking for good Chinese carryout food. I'm looking for something quick and reliable, on a night when I'd rather hang with the kids and be lazy. I can't say that this is going to be our new weekly replacement, but atleast between here, and 2 other spots that require some driving, we can get by...overall I'd give the food a 6.5 - MAYBE 7 out of 10
