The pan-fried sesame pancake is where it's at. We ordered it for our post-wedding feast. Then another 3 times. We even ordered it to go for my in-laws to enjoy at home. There are few places we'd go to just for the sesame pancake, and and Hunan Chef is one of them. Had lunch here. The food, 4 stars. We ordered pretty typical dish: Sichuan beef noodle and black bean beef. The flavor was pretty top, especially Sichuan beef noodle, I don't remember the last time I had better beef noodle, especially the beef was in chunks of good cuts of stew. Menu was very boring so 3 stars for that. The ambiance is also pretty good, this one looks pretty boring and chop-soy style from the outside, so after so many years living here we've never visited it. Why 2 stars? Service. Now I seldom complain about service much at Asian restaurants, it is Asian's "thing" that they are usually pretty hustling and non attentive, only focus on price and flavor. However this one tops my head, the waitress was very rude, if she needs to repeat a 2nd time or not exactly what she wanted, she will show you what a mean person she is, pretty much you feel the same as from that Seinfeld "soup nazi" episode. I still left a tip, she deserves nothing, it was mostly for the food, I will not sit at her table next time (and that's also the reason I left a tip). read more

Great tasting Chinese food in the city of Pleasanton. Walking distance from where we were staying at. Found it actually getting in our car and driving down a few driveways. Ordered Honey Walnut Prawns, Combination Fried Rice, Combination Chow Mein and Pork Chop. All dishes tasted great. The prawns are huge, as a matter of fact the shrimp that came in the fried rice and chow mein were silver dollar size. Place was going to close within the hour and they welcomed us in with no problem. Place was empty which was great for us since the attention was on us if we needed anything. This one gets a solid "meh" from me. I'm guessing Pleasanton is just far enough away from San Jose and Milpitas and the ethnic diversity there that the Chinese restaurants aren't as authentic. I got some takeout from Hunan Chef and was underwhelmed. Nothing was bad, but it sure wasn't great either. My sister goes here all the time and loves it, but her family prefers the bland, non-spicy Americanized Chinese food. We had sweet and sour pork, Chow Mein (I didn't try either of these as they aren't my thing), chicken with snow peas (bland, and there was a ton of chicken fat still on the meat), Crispy pan fried noodles (okay but not much meat), and beef with string beans (this was the best of lot). There was no spice and little flavor. If you aren't adventurous and prefer "safe" flavors and Americanized Chinese food, then maybe this is the place for you. I'll stick with the places where they serve weird stuff with a ton of heat. read more

I phoned in my order to have it delivered, and in less than a half hour I had hot, fresh food delivered to my front door. The delivery guy carries a portable credit card machine that connects online via a cellular network. He can run your card right there and issue you a receipt---cool. I ordered: Steamed rice, Broccoli Beef, Chicken Chow Mein, and Kung Pao Chicken. Everything was very tasty!! Veggies were fresh, beef and chicken were cooked well, and the portions were large. We love coming here for Chinese. The minute we walk through the door, their staff ALWAYS treats us like family. They give our kids their own-kiddy plates and utensils so that their dining experience is just as great as ours! The staff is always spending extra time chatting with us and making us feel welcomed. The food is delicious; very fresh ingredients and served hot. Never have I once ever received cold or warm food. They also have an open kitchen which is one of my favorites about their restaurant! They've got nothing to hide and they keep it clean in the dining room and in the kitchen! The atmosphere is also very calming. The noise-level is very low, (we bring our three boys here and it is still quiet!). The surroundings are very beautiful instead and it always smells so good!! (of course because of their food!!) Bathroom is spotless too and easily accessible for all ages! This place is a MUST! I can see why it is five stars, they really enjoy what they do and it shows in their food and their service! We have tried every chinese restaurant in Pleasanton, and I have to admit Hunan Chef is the top choice by far! Food has always been fresh, and tasty. We have eaten in, but mostly we do take outs. All the ladies here have always been super friendly, polite and attentive. Never had any problems with any of our orders/food or the eat in service. Our favorites: (keep in mind we are creatures of habit & order the same thing most of the time with very little change) ~Crab Cheese Puffs! Love them! ~Sliced BBQ Pork, these are soooo tender, perfectly done. ~Sesame Chicken, SUPER good, wish it wasn't breaded but still very tasty & they add broccoli to the plate. ~Mongolian Lamb/Beef, hubby loves it, very tasty - always a winner. ~Mixed vegetables, very tasty! ~Combination Fried Rice - very good, they do not skimp on the meats & veggies combo (huge plus!) Side note: ~Green Onion Beef - to be honest, i saw no difference between this and Mongolian beef, it just wasn't spicy, no peppers - (our last order of this was extremely salty), but for flavoring sake, we'll stick to the Mongolians. I've eaten here twice. One time I dined in the restaurant and other time we ordered take out. Both times were pleasurable experiences. We ordered hot and sour soup, kung pao tofu, shrimp fried rice, and sweet and sour pork. My sons ate the shrimp fried rice and the sweet and sour pork. The shrimp were good sized and they really like the fried rice. They were split on the sweet and sour pork. One loved it and the other though it was too sweet. The hot and sour soup is a hearty soup. It was pretty middle of the road in terms of taste. It wasn't too hot and it wasn't too sour. I tend to prefer soups that are strong in both flavors, so I had to add some heat to mine. Once I got my soup to the level I wanted it, it was great. The kung pao tofu was good. It had a nice amount of tofu which was delicious and it had a variety of different vegetables. All four of us agreed that we should eat there more often. It's in such a convenient location and the food is good. read more

It has been a few years since I have eaten their food, so last night I decided to treat myself. I was vert disappointed! The food was awful! The pot stickers were without any real flavor and the rice was way over cooked and mushy! One of the dishes was the Combination Fried Rice. The beef was way over cooked, the chicken pieces were all grisel and fat and the rice was over cooked.
