Hunan Chef is one of our favorite Hunan cuisine restaurants in the Tri-Valley area. They served authentic Hunan cuisine, and this was evident on the day we came here for a Sunday lunch, as the place was packed with Chinese families. On the weekends, they have a special Chinese breakfast menu, offering items such as sweet or savory soy bean milk, fan tuan (rice rolls), green onion pancakes, etc. If this is your first time here, I recommend trying a few dishes from the Chef's Recommendations. We had the bean curd sheet with pork and jalepeno, shrimp with mountain yams and woodears, and the fish gluten tofu soup. Overall, this is a pretty solid traditional Chinese restaurant. The menu is standard, but execution is good. The salt and pepper chicken was excellent, and surprisingly appealed to our kids. Ditto the pan fried noodles. I even liked the pea sprouts, despite not being too keen on veggies. The only major knock on Hunan Chef is slow service. Not only did it take a while to get water and silverware, but the food also came out at an uneven pace. The outside may look questionable but go inside and get your fill for a weekend only - carbohydrate forward Taiwanese brunch. The fan Tuan (rice roll, salty version) is top knotch. The sheng gian bao (fried pork buns) was juicy but a bit too much outside dough. The soy milk (salty version) is on point. The stir fried tofu skin, pork & jalapeños was flavorful. This is the only place w Taiwanese brunch so it's nice to have the option. Wonder if they will consider offering stinking tofu at some point. Service is efficient and attentive. The hot and sour soup is amazing here Nice and spicy We often get the Mongolian beef and lately because we're going to lower carbs. We get the prawns and vegetables and either the basil eggplant or another eggplant dish, more mixed vegetables, or mu shu pork. When were splurging a little bit on the calories and fried stuff we will get the salt and pepper fish and last night. We had a little bit of fun trying the Peking spareribs! Hunan chef is a long standing neighborhood Chinese restaurant serving authentic delicious Hunan dishes. They recently were closed for a month due to repairs after a car hit and damaged the front entrance, but I am happy to say that they are now open again. I was really excited to try this place being that I already have my go to Chinese food spot, but it is all the way in Walnut Creek. The food here on Yelp looked pretty tasty so we decided to order takeout. We got Mongolian beef, house, fried rice, wonton soup, and salt and pepper prawns. The total was about $75 for this. Which seems to be typical nowadays for Chinese food. The house fried rice lacked flavor, and so did the wonton soup. It was very bland. The best plate was the salt and pepper prawns. As a Chinese person, sorry to say this place is just not it. We ordered cumin lamb, hunan style beef and wok cabbage. The cabbage was practically raw... the lamb tasted gamey, had an after taste. Beef was over tenderized which tasted like soggy meat. I am Very surprised with such high rating at this place. We also saw mainly Caucasian customers after we finished our dinner which I know sounds terrible but clearly a sign this place is catered towards more American palette. Hunan chef has been consistently good for literally decades. Authentic Chinese food with an extensive menu. Not the healthiest option around, as it can be quite oily / salty, but that's the price you pay for flavor. My go-tos are the big sesame pancake, string beans, cumin lamb, and the pickled cabbage fish clay pot soup. Service is fast and the space is nothing fancy, but feels like an auntie's dining room with lots of families around. read more

Chinese Breakfast, you say? Sweet soy milk and fried Chinese donut? I am so there! I've been looking for a new Chinese breakfast spot ever since Chef Wu's in Newark closed down earlier this year. It was just my luck that I found it right by one of my friend's! I got seated right away and after looking at their menu, I decided on getting the sweet soy milk, the sesame with braised beef, a fried Chinese donut and a savory rice roll. Definitely a lot of food but I enjoyed every bite and had leftovers to take home. The soy milk has sugar added on the bottom so make sure to give it a good stir before drinking. Or, if you don't want it to be too sweet, don't stir too much and don't drink the very bottom. The fried Chinese donut was on point; crispy golden fried and light. I enjoyed dipping this into my soy milk. The sesame pancake with braised beef as also very good. Some times they don't put enough sauce but this one was well don't. The sauce did drip out a bit but I didn't mind. The savory rice roll was also on point. Pieces of the fried Chinese donut and preserved vegetables helped to balance the ingredients. Plentiful parking, a good amount of tables, clean bathroom and attentive service. Definitely my new go to place on the weekends! I'll gladly drive the 40ish minutes to get there! read more

Amazing spot - really enjoyed the weekend brunch. There's a huge menu of Chinese classics, and I love all the specialty items. Salty rice roll (饭团）- excellent, not too salty, perfect crunchy you tiao bits and picked veg with pork floss. Pumpkin cake - don't see this too often at restaurants, it seems deep fried, which gives it a nice crispy crust and soft chewy mochi wrapping. Red bean paste filling is not too sweet. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I ordered takeout and was extremely disappointed. I ordered two dishes: the salt and pepper pork chops and the Hunan-style tofu. The pork chops were undercooked and visibly pink, which is unacceptable from a food-safety standpoint. Additionally, there was a hair in the Hunan-style tofu. I came here for the savory rice roll which is only served on weekend brunch menu. Its a lot similar like the one I had growing up in Taiwan! My favorite dish is bean curd with pork. I can eat the whole bowl of rice just with this dish alone. This time I tried three mushrooms which is surprisingly good. Nothing compared to the flavor a Chinese wok created. Ambiance is straight up traditional Chinese restaurant with lazy susans in the middle of the table to make sharing super easy. So...when the waitress sat us down, she removed all the chopsticks and replaced them with forks. I've never seen this in the 41 years I've lived in California. I asked her to bring back the chopsticks (how weird would it feel to eat Chinese food with a fork???) and she literally tossed the pile at me. I had to hand them out to the family. Came here with my best friend and boyfriend. My best friend is chinese and said their food was not bad. We ordered pork belly, sweet and sour dish, mapo tofu, cabbage, and salty fish fried rice. I wouldn't order the tofu or cabbage again. Cabbage was not as flavorful but it had nice crunch. Inside seems very chinese american old diner vibe. The waitress was kind. Food was a bittttt pricey but it is family style. I think you're better off ordering one rice, 1/2 protein, and a veggie. There was also tea served in the beginning which was very refreshing. Apparently the savory one is a Taiwanese specialty but we keep forgetting that and only order the sweet one. Every dish has been to our liking... A new favorite Chinese restaurant in the area! I had this spot bookmarked when I was looking for fan tuan, and finally got the chance to come here and try it all. We came on a Sunday for lunch, and there weren't too many people inside so we were able to get seated immediately. Between the four of us we ordered 6 dishes which was way to much food for us, but that meant plenty of leftovers! We got a salty rice roll (fan tuan), Hunan shredded pork, fish in wine sauce, string beans with pork, pan fried sesame cake, and spicy beef tendon. Everything was amazingly delicious! The fan tuan reminded me of the ones in Taiwan, and the pan fried sesame cake was basically a fluffy scallion pancake with a sesame seed crust that was so yummy. My two favorite dishes were the spicy beef tendon and the string beans - the tendon came with beef slices, stomach, and cucumber as well, all in the most delicious spicy savory nutty sauce. I would totally use that sauce for everything. The string beans also had so much flavor, definitely better than din tai fung's. Finally, the fish was also very fragrant and flavorful with the wine sauce and the Hunan pork was also well seasoned with a nice jalapeno fragrance. We were so full and satisfied with this meal! The Salty Rice Roll was one of the best I have tasted in the Bay Area, even better than some places which specialize in sticky rice rolls. The roll had a thin layer of sticky rice layer with plenty of fillings(pork floss, prickled veggies and crunchy Chinese fried dough/crullers). Everything worked well together giving the perfect bite. Writing this for my first visit about their take away order. It was lazy Sunday when I was craving for Chinese brunch so found Hunan Chef in the town. We ordered their soya milk, scallion pancakes, potstickers , rice burritos and radish pancake, fried buns and broccoli beef. Total was $67 The wait time was 45 min, the lady on the phone had already me about the long wait time, totally understand since it was Sunday. First, the portions were smaller than expected, with the price I'd think their to go containers were regular size but they were smaller than most Chinese restaurant food to go containers . Second, most of the food was deep fried instead of pan fried, so the potstickers and pancakes were greasier than usual and the oil smell old. Last, food were over fried. It was t a satisfying meal, my first experience was disappointed. Not likely I will go back soon. read more

This place was found by searching it up on Yelp and it did not disappoint. Came on a Saturday around 6:30pm and it was pretty empty which I was surprised to find for a weekend. The decor is simple, roomy and clean. Let's get started on my ratings: -potstickers 7/10 -Sweet and sour chicken 9/10 -Chicken fried rice 6/10 (made with dark meat) -Chicken chowmein 10/10 ( made with sliced white meat). (See pictures for reference) My favorite items were the sweet and sour chicken and the chicken chowmein. However, the chowmein came at the end when we were well into almost finishing the rest of our food but definitely worth it!
