We came here on a Wednesday night and there barely was a line. (It was my second time- I came here about a year ago and the line was out the door!) the girl working there was super friendly which also heightened our experience as well. We sampled a couple flavors with metal spoons (no waste!) and then picked our favorites. The single scoop is really juuuust enough ice cream for dessert after a meal at a nearby restaurant. We had the Honey Graham and a featured flavor that was an olive oil cookies and cream variant (sorry I don't remember!) overall great experience and I can't wait to come back for more frozen deliciousness :) read more

After working late and making a 40 minute trip out of my way to Humphry Slocombe, I was harassed out of line at their opening night by a group claiming to be the friends of someone who worked there. They screamed "she works here, let her go home!" at me and my girlfriend and only us, as we proceeded to watch them not make a fuss to any of the people behind us. I do believe she worked there, but she did nothing to stop her friends from telling us to get out of town. Not exactly the most welcoming opening night. It's not even as if we came right before closing, we were there at 9:20pm. Very rude and inconsiderate of that worker and her friends. Won't be coming back anytime soon. Super awesome experience. My kids were blown away by all the inventive flavors and trust me they are really just straight up vanilla and strawberry eaters. They instead wanted to try everything from secret breakfast to captn crunch on down the line. I had to promise to take them back. I noticed that there is a new location in uptown Oakland (near Calavera) so that's good news for those of us who don't trek to the Berkeley/Oakland border often. Finally, a California ice cream that rivals Jeni's! Trips to the Midwest had always included pilgrimages to Jeni's Ice Cream, the jewel of Columbus, Ohio, where I'd marvel at the expert execution of a catalog's worth of unique flavors. That was prior to my discovery of Humphry Slocombe in its several East Bay locations, which gives Jeni's a run for its money. Stopped by the Berkeley location and sampled the Secret Breakfast and the Harvey Milk and Honey Graham. Secret Breakfast was *boozy?* with bourbon ice cream spiked with cornflakes - overall, an elevated rendition of Momofuku Milk Bar's cereal milk soft serve. And as ice cream fights back with a better chew than soft serve, Humphry Slocombe's is better. Honey Graham ice cream featured delicate honey notes with crunchy texture offered by graham crackers which evoked and surpassed the excellent honeycomb flavor at NYC's Van Leeuwen. At $10/pint, Humphry Slocombe is priced even higher than travelling Jeni's (Whole Foods). Wonder if they distribute nationally? read more

Many locals and students alike were very disappointed to hear about the closing of the store. When I heard Humphry was taking over the spot, I was actually pretty hopeful. I've had Humphry's ice cream in SF a few times and I always thought very well of it. Now that it's here, I'm not sure if it's the perfect replacement for Ici. However, I like HS is a pretty good option for desserts in the area, albeit a little expensive for what it is. I had a single scoop of the Secret Breakfast in a sugar cone. SECRET BREAKFAST (4/5) - Really big scoop size - Can really taste the bourbon undertones in the flavor - One of their most popular flavors for a reason - The sweetness can get a bit tiring, so recommend sharing In general, I'm shocked at how pricey the scoops are. It's nice that the serving size is so huge, but I think it's too much for me. I would appreciate a kid's size scoop for a lesser price such that I don't feel awful after a single scoop. The service wasn't all that great either. It's not like anything got in the way of me getting my ice cream, but the two workers were a little pushy. I don't really base reviews on service though. I am forever still mourning the closure of Ici's here where Humphry Slocombe took over, but I guess if it had to be taken over by any ol' ice cream shop, Humphry Slocombe would be a decent substitute! I've only been to the Ferry Building location before this but back in May, I placed an order for pick up of their ice cream cake and this location was closer to me in the East Bay... oh my gosh the cake is MASSIVE but so delicious! I got it for my husband's birthday and surprised him and while I was in the store, I picked up 3 pints of ice cream, Buy 2 get one 1 or some deal like that! It was pretty worth it :) I got Secret Breakfast, since you can't buy that in stores, blueberry boy bait, and vietnamese coffee. Blueberry was the only one I hadn't tried before, but secret breakfast and bluebottle coffee are also both in the ice cream cake layered on top of a coffee cake and topped with a yummy strudel! It was really frozen and difficult to make the first cut...my husband basically had a huge knife stuck in the cake trying to make it through haha, but if you let it stand for a little bit before cutting into it, I think it may be easier. Also the cake tastes better when it warms up a little so it's not as hard! You do need to pre-order the cake 72 hours in advance and can pick up in stores--no delivery right now during covid. But also, if you can make your way out to the store, check Whole Foods frozen aisle! There's more flavors in store, but some classics are at WF, including Viet coffee. I wish the stores carried Secret Breakfast but then I probably would be eating WAY too much of that all the time....hehe :D To be completely honest, I think the scoops in store are a little overpriced--like $5+ for a small cup, but the pints are more worth it if you know what flavor you like!! read more

this is my family's favorite ice cream spot since their first location in south san francisco. nothing excited me more than when they opened this location a couple months back but i was finally able to stop by and see it in person. although they now sell their pints and safeway, whole foods and some other locations - they never had tahitian vanilla !!! we love that flavor and always used to drive to SF just to get pints of it. i thought they would have the pint pre-made here but they didn't so the employee had to scoop 2 pints for us. luckily they offered ice packs because we ended up getting 6 pints of ice cream to bring back for my family! we have had most of their flavors before (or at least the classic ones) and if you have not tried humphry slocombe you are missing out! flavors - tahitian vanilla - if you think vanilla is boring, this flavor brings a whole different perspective on vanilla ice creams. it has more of a salty kick to it. must give it a try !! blue bottle vietnamese coffee - anyone who has had this coffee ice cream claims it to be their favorite ice cream - including me. i am not a coffee person but this ice cream is AMAZING. it's rich, creamy, not overly sweet, and super decadent. strawberry blondie - their strawberry blondie is a strawberry ice cream with white chocolate blondies. i personally think the chunks make it that much better and the strawberry flavor is very good. i think they did a really good job with this flavor and i definitely want to try the other strawberry flavor. hong kong milk tea - i have seen this and always wanted it but finally put my hands on it. it's a numi organic tea with condensed milk and bites of almond cookie. i think almond cookies always complete an HK style tea time but the ice cream base itself did not really remind me of milk tea. but this was still good! black sesame - this is one of the flavors on the less sweet side - perfect for my parents. it is rich in black sesame flavor and super smooth! matchadoodle - i am a huge fan of matcha but really disappointed in the flavor of this pint. i think that the matcha is not rich enough but their house-made snickerdoodle cookie is really good. i personally would never combine matcha & cinnamon flavors together but it works if you are not a huge matcha fan. honey graham - house-made graham crackers and raw honey ice cream. this definitely has a good soft texture combo with the sweet honey ice cream. i personally do not love the flavor of honey but i think this is very subtle. it is on the sweeter side. price - they're usually $10/pint but they had a special offer where you can buy 2, get 1 free. we were planning on grabbing 4 pints anyways so might as well get another 2! i wish they advertised this so that they could get more business. price wise comparison - in-store they usually range from $6.99 - $9.99 so i thought this was a super fair deal and not off their store prices too much. i really like how they have fusion flavors and a lot of it is perfect for my family who doesn't love super sweet ice cream. of course they have a variety and we have tried their blueberry boy bait, matchadoodle, honey graham, and a couple more. i only got those in groceries stores and none of those were AMAZING besides the blueberry boy bait. we always stick to the classic flavors but i definitely want to try their dairy-free one's as well! highly recommend humphry slocombe as your ice cream shop. read more

Honestly, it's expensive ice cream with flavors that feel like they were rushed. I've never had the same flavor of something taste the same twice, so that inconsistent pattern can't let you have a favorite flavor. Why are people not lining up like they used to at this location? Easy. The prices are too high. But maybe this business model is more profitable. They've only got one server working at a time- so service is really slow. Not slow enough to create a line down the block though. Even if the business model works better the end result is more money for the owner, but fewer happy people eating ice cream. I'm pretty sure prices are about 25% higher than they should be. Super yummy! Lots of special and also traditional flavors. They don't have many fruity flavors - mostly coffee, chocolate, etc - but the flavors they have are excellent. The texture is rich and creamy, and the servings are generous scoops. Definitely pretty pricey, but (at least when I was there) they had a BOGOF sale if you paid with Apple Pay, and they always have 20% odd with a valid Berkeley student ID. The staff was warm and friendly, and the space itself is cozy and sweet, complete with wide windows and twinkle lights. There's a couple benches for seating. They sell scoops, special drinks, and also ice creams and sorbets by the pint. Definitely worth a try (especially if the Apple Pay deal continues!) read more

I'm so happy that Humphry Slocombe opened, and I love their unique flavors. I have been here twice, getting a seasonal flavor the first time (Chocolate Banana something), and ordered the Chocolate Violet the second time. Both flavors tasted amazing and satisfied my craving for sweet ice cream. I also love that they're open pretty late for the Elmwood area (until 10 p.m. on weekdays). The staff are also super friendly, letting you sample the flavor(s) you're interested in and (once you decide) ringing you up quickly. I'm really glad that Ici was replaced by another awesome ice cream place. The main downside of the creamery is that the space is really small so there usually isn't a lot of space to sit down, and the prices are a bit higher than most ice cream spots. Still, I'll definitely be stopping by here regularly to get my ice cream fix. read more

I would recommend trying to find their brand in the local supermarket since it sells for a lower price. I was really excited to try this location since I've been to the one in SF a couple of times a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed their ice cream. But my excitement faded really fast after we walked through the door. First of all, the server just did not seem to care that we were in there. He didn't greet us when we came in and did not really care when we pointed out that there was a fly flying around inside the ice cream freezer! He just shrug his shoulders and didn't even try to let it out. If only we saw the fly before we ordered, we would've walked out. But I'm all for supporting local businesses so I try to just let some things go. The ice cream itself was not bad but a little too sweet for my taste. But I think it was because I got the Kouign Amman and Hong Kong Milk Tea. I think if I wanna try other flavors, I'll just go back to the SF location. Prob won't be anytime soon though. read more
