Humphrey Slocombe is finally open in Berkeley! Located in Ici Ice Cream's old spot on College Ave, they're scooping up some classic flavors in addition to more eclectic ones. They have 12 flavors available to sell by the scoop, as well as pints of their classics (such as Hong Kong milk tea) and merchandise. Today (March 28) is their grand opening, and they're offering free scoops all day with a suggested $1 donation to Project Open Hand. Ordinarily, pricing is: -Single ($4.75) -Double ($7) -Triple ($8.75) They also have floats and sundaes available. The Fudge Brownie Delite ($8.50) comes on a really good brownie - my friend said he actually liked the brownie even more than the ice cream :O The flavors rotate, but when I went they were: -After school special (vanilla w/ choc potato chips and caramel swirl) -French vanilla -Duet (vanilla w/ limoncello swirl) -Pepper and mint chip -Earl Grey lemon ash -Concannon Voignier (a wine collab) -White Russian black forest -Apricot crisp -Anchor Porter (a beer collab) -Malted milk chocolate -Cinn-tres leches -Kalimotxo (coke and wine sorbet) My favorites were White Russian black forest, pepper and mint chip, and Anchor Porter, but you can try as many samples as you want so I highly recommend sampling a few flavors to find one you like. Service is excellent and very sweet (the line moves kind of slowly because the servers are so nice and accommodating though). It was way too much flake and chunk that it felt like you were eating a a granola bar rather than a silky treat. The ice cream wasn't smooth, and it was icy. The woman working alone on 1/11 at 9:20pm had a line of 3 groups. The line was not moving and by the time she ended up helping the next group it was 9:27 (they close at 9:30) and she told everyone that that was her last transaction of the night and she would not be helping anyone else who had been waiting. She was extremely passive aggressive and wouldn't give her name to the group in front of us who asked and were annoyed, as they'd been waiting longer. Normal businesses just close the door at closing to avoid letting new customers in. There are easy ways to handle closing without coming across so poorly and upsetting people. Saw Humphry Slocombe on Door Dash and had to check it out! They had a couple flavors to pick from off of door dash. They might have more flavors if you go to the actual location. Door dash delivered the ice cream super fast and the ice cream was wrapped in insulated wrappers which I thought was super thoughtful. I chose Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee and Matchadoodle. I tried the Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee first because I couldn't wait to try it. Safe to say it meant my expectations haha and that will be my go to. On another night I tried the Matchadoodle and was happily surprised how good it was. It's a mixture of matcha ice cream and snickerdoodle. The matcha ice cream has little chunks of snickerdoodle. The flavors compliment each other very nicely. I would have never thought to out those two flavors together. I stopped by Humphry Slocombe this past weekend close to closing and there was no line, something I had gotten used to when this location used to be Ici's. I got a scoop of the Secret Breakfast and it was just as good as I remembered it when I first had it at the Ferry Building in San Francisco years ago. Though the ice cream was a bit on the sweet side, I really enjoyed how prominent the bourbon flavor was. I do wish Humphry had more flavors like Salt & Straw, which has a core set of flavors and flavors that get rotated out on a monthly basis. Always a delight! Their ice cream is always a joy whenever I come to this location or the ones in San Francisco. Haven't been to the Oakland one yet. Tried their newest flavor today the Van Gogh Sunflower. It was okay. I didn't get a huge taste of sunflower. I got the sundae version so maybe the intense flavor of the ginger candies overwhelmed the flavor. I will say that I feel this location kinda skimps on the amount of ice cream they give you. I think I got a single scoop for the sundae. Given I am not sure if you got one or two scoops but I think for the price you should be given two. I love the plentiful offerings and the original flavors created. From the secret breakfast for a little buzz to the floral Harvey milk and honey graham. This is located on the busy street of College Ave. It took over the Ici ice cream location. Parking is street parking which if you are lucky you can park close. I once parked more in the housing area just to come here. Pricing I would say is on the higher side for a scoop of artisan ice cream. I have been coming to Humphry Slocombe since they started just in the Mission district and I remember the good old days of cheaper prices. Definitely a treat to come once in awhile. read more

I had such high hopes for Humphry Slocombe which may be why I was disappointed. In the old Ici space, I guess I was hoping that it would fill the void that Ici left behind when it closed its doors. At $7 for a double scoop of secret breakfast and Harvey milk, two of their popular flavors, I was definitely expecting more of a flavor bomb but what I got was a fizzle. The torched fluff might be what it needed but the ice cream was already soft and melting even though it was a mild evening. For now I will stick with I-Scream for my ice cream fix until I can find one as innovative as Ici. read more

In addition, she told us firmly we couldn't taste more than 2 flavors ( which is crazy given the different exotic flavors), and we couldn't mix 2 different flavors in a two-scoop serving. I've been buying pints of Vietnamese Coffee ice cream here since they came to College Ave. I also get the large cones which appear to be made on-site. They nearly always have only one young 20-something or younger woman working alone with out help. Ici, a former brand in same location had 3 people working and line was up the street. Two served. the third rang up orders. Since there's a lot of crime on College Ave., i don't like that Solocombe doesn't hire enough people, has no security, and a high turnover. Most make the large cones very poorly as clearly there is no training. Now, onto the ice cream. It's got WAY too much sugar and my vietnamese coffee has gotten paler and paler. it no longer tastes like coffee. This is not cheap ice cream !! I won't be back. A poor replacement for Ici - overhyped (2/5 green stars) Even on a sunny Friday evening there wasn't a large line outside the new HS store - a stark contrast to last year, when Ici sold ice cream in the same space. We tried a few ice cream flavors and bought three. The overall verdict was that they were too sweet and not as innovative as the press would have you believe. Ici's flavors were more authentic and well-balanced, in my opinion. And although flavors can change, perhaps the deeper problem is that the base ice cream itself is just OK - not memorable in terms of flavor or creaminess. The good news is that their vegan ice cream was a success in terms of texture / creaminess (although the particular flavor was a bit too sweet). I'm also giving Humphry Slocombe 2/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * They had two vegan ice creams / sorbets on offer. * They have metal tasting spoons (instead of disposable plastic). * They provide virtually no information anywhere on ingredients. * Do they use organic milk? Pasture-raised eggs? No idea, since they don't disclose. These are the main ingredients, and especially at $4.50 per scoop you'd expect some transparency. (All of Ici's dairy was organic.) * They have used foie gras for one of their ice creams in the past. * In response to criticism on this, one of the founders went into the Rainbow Grocery and planted meat products on the shelves. read more

Ferry Building location is much better. I came with a group of people and one flavor was so melted that they couldn't even scoop it in a cone, and one flavor was icy. There was a long line and only two people working. It was disorganized and they kept running back and forth from cashier to sampling to scooping. It's kinda expensive, so I expect it to be quality-controlled. I tried the rose and blackberry jam + granola flavor. You could slightly taste the alcohol in the rose flavor-it was a little strong aftertaste. I like their unique flavors, but it wasn't up to par with the other location. I don't understand why this place has less than four stars. I tried Humphry Slocombe for the first time earlier this week with some friends and we all agreed on how much we loved the unique flavors. This location is where Ici used to be--an ice cream shop that I hold immense sentimental value to--yet, despite this slight reluctant to try the place that replaced Ici, I had a really great experience. There was a short queue inside the shop, we were allowed to try as many flavors of ice cream as we wanted, and every flavor was so fascinating to me. I loved the Secret Breakfast and the Harvey Milk (? think it's called something else) flavors and asked for a single split-scoop of both (a 'single' scoop is basically two scoops, so you can get two flavors!). My friends and I were able to sit on the bench inside to enjoy our ice cream. We were in the shop past closing time and never felt pressured to leave, and we were never asked to leave either, which was really nice. I paid $4.75 for my ice cream, granted it was in a cup. Regardless, that is pretty standard for higher-end ice cream shops. Humphry Slocombe doesn't deserve to get poor ratings just because of that. I keep finding more of these outpost stores every time I come to the East Bay. This store on College has a Main Street vibe which matches the neighborhood. The kid behind the counter was robotic and sounded unenthusiastic even when he was telling us something was good. Yet when a group of young ladies came in a few minutes later he pepped up and became totally engaged. We even saw him dancing to the music as we left. The hormonal transformation was funny and we laughed about it. Most importantly, the product is top notch. The flavors are expectedly unexpected. The ice cream is rich and satisfying. If you're craving an ice cream to treat yourself to, Humphry's does not disappoint. The Honey Graham ice cream is my absolute favorite and their Hong Kong Milk Tea is also SO GOOD. I've ordered pints of these flavors and have come close to finishing the whole pint in one sitting- very dangerous if you do not know how to portion control. The Black Sesame flavor is also a crowd pleaser and if you really want to treat yourself, make sure to order a scoop with the waffle cone. C'est tres bien! read more

I wasn't too impressed by this. The location is new and is very clean, which is why I gave it a 3 star ranking. However, the items and offerings didn't blow me away and there's little to none seating space which is why I didn't feel comfortable ranking this any higher. I understand it's a local ice cream shop that started in SF, but paying $9 for a brownie sundae that isn't big feels a bit overpriced to me. I do have to say that the staff are very friendly and the music being played here was great. There is street parking, which was free when I came at night but I would imagine during the day they rely more on foot traffic.
