Friendly service, good prices and portions, average food. Temperature of the food bummed me out personally, the poke we ordered was not as cold as I would've liked and the items on our mixed plates were not hot. Shoyu poke was pretty good, nice chunks of tuna and good flavor. I got a mixed plate with kalua pork and pulehu chicken, boyfriend got pulehu chicken and teriyaki beef. Pulled pork was ok, too salty to go without any sauce, but juicy. I took most of it home, added BBQ sauce and nuked it in the microwave and then it was really good. Pulehu chicken was tender enough and had good flavor, it was all a little charred but it's grilled chicken so it is what it is. Regular portion came with 3 nice pieces. Boyfriend's teri beef tasted just ok to me, he seemed happy with it. Mac salad was a little bland, but pretty good. If we come again I want to try the kalua nachos I saw offered on the specials board. read more

I love this place! I went here for the first time today and was very pleased. I ordered the pulehu chicken and it was amazing; really juicy, tender and flavorful. The portion was huge for a decent price and I even have some to take home for later. The spam musubi was delicious too. The service was quick and our waitress was an absolute doll. If I could have one food and not gain weight the rest of my life it would be Khalua Pig & Cabbage with their Macaroni Salad & Rice. I mix this up together with Aloha Shoyu sauce and I am in food heaven! I have had their Chicken Skewers too and they are also to die for. I am not usually even a fan of chicken but these are cooked just to the perfect crisp I forget I'm eating a chicken. I love the Hawaiian music and atmosphere. I have spent much time in Hawaii and it is very authentic. The only downside is it makes me wish I was actually in Hawaii so I could go to the beach and go surfing! read more

This one one of my family's favorite places to eat. My fav is the pulehu chicken and my kiddo loves the burgers. Ask for an extra side of the teri sauce and pour it over the mac. It's fantastic. I really want to give these guys 5 stars, I really do. I'm all about local businesses and especially family owned. But..... Nothing was anything better than mediocre (with exception of the rice, which was DELISH! I know rice can be hard to make but no brownie points here, sorry - it's just rice) I went in already knowing what I wanted to order, even though I've never been to Hula Hands I recently returned from a trip to Hawaii so I had a hankering for some vaca reminiscing. But they had no pineapple rice, no tofu, and no fried rice... okay - no problem I'll just order the seared Ahi. The Ahi was a weird color, I even asked the waiter about it - "well-it's cooked" was his reply.... I've had ALOT of ahi in my day and I've never seen it that color... but I shrugged my shoulders and dug in. Um... no. The ahi tasted.... old. and stale. and fishy. It was a little weird. (yes I realize that Ahi is FISH but there is a difference between seasoned fish and tasting fishy) - I've never had 'fishy' ahi before that's usually reserved for salmon or the like. And it wasn't good. The people were very nice, the decor was pretty bad (there was a hold in the wall next to my table that let in a nice frigid breeze), I tasted both my sister and my mother's plate as well and wasn't impressed. I'm sorry Hula Hands! I wish you could be my new favorite spot, but you struck out. read more

I don't want to hear about the health care debate. I don't want to feel depressed about the recession. I don't want to do my laundry. I want to be whisked away to the islands to feast upon Hula Hands' delicious beef teriyaki plate. Happy times, bra. Hula Hands' Fireweed location is sunny and clean, with tropical tablecloths and a smiling, friendly waitstaff. Orders come to the table quickly so you don't have to torturously inhale the scents of fellow diners' grilled meat for too long. The plates comes with a meat entree(s), a generous, well formed scoop of rice and macaroni salad. I won't comment on the mac salad as I didn't eat it (I am mayo-a-phobic, you see). But, let me talk about the beef teriyaki: Tender strips of lean beef bathed in a sweet marinade and grilled just enough so that the edges are slightly crispy. Throw in a can of POG and it's Shangri-La on the westside. P.S. The khalua pork is cooked in the oven, not the ground. I learned this when I overheard a little kid asking the waitress. She explained the ground is too cold to cook a pig in the ground in Alaska. Good question, pipsqueak. read more

I have eaten at Hula Hands a few times and love what everything I ordered. I always get the special which includes Kalua pork, chicken, rice, and macironi salad. The portion is enough to feed two adults easily, but my husband always gets his own. I have also tried the BBQ short ribs which is also very good. The prices are very much reasonable. What i get cost $9.00. There is plenty of parking and seating as it is never to crowded. The staff and owner is friendly and will answer any questions you may have about authentic Polynesian cuisine you can't pronounce or has never tasted. I would have given five stars but the restaurant, as with many others in Alaska (including high priced ones) is drabby. I recommend the food at Hula Hands and as far as the neighborhood goes, I have never had any problems. read more

3.7 stars. Yelp, you may not have a ton of reviews for AK, but you've yet to lead me wrong. (Unlike Urbanspoon...reviewers there are very non-discriminate with what's good). Anyways, there are actually 3 locations around the area, and this one is where the boss lady works; she's a Hawaiian auntie, who knows her way around the kitchen. I saw the poke, and had to get it. I ordered the medium, thinking that this is AK, and even back in HI, it's not like you get huge portions. Boy, I was struggling to finish my shoyu. The big, beautifully marbled pieces were cut thick and had almost no connective tissue. My husband ordered one of the combo meals with palusami and pulehu chicken. I didn't care for the congealed texture of the palusami. It was steamed coconut milk and onions in a taro leaf. On the other hand, the pulehu chicken was just excellent. The chicken had a nice smoky flavor and went really well with rice. O, and I almost forgot the turkey tails. They were flavored in teriyaki sauce and deep fried. I didn't think we'd find turkey tail in AK, let alone ones this respectable. Once was not enough, so we returned again when we got back into Anchorage near the end of our trip. My husband ordered most of the same things again, but I tried the wonton mein. I fulfilled my craving, but I've had better. Portions were fine, but I only got 2 pieces of wonton. The rice scoops were pretty skimpy...tiniest I've encountered in a restaurant. Cheap prices, so it's hard to complain. We still think that this is one of the best restaurants we've been to on our trip, so when we return, we'll def be stopping by here. read more

The food isnt terrible. My problem with Hula Hands is that everytime I come here the food is COLD! Its not hard to see that the food has been sitting and has not been made to order. It's as if they have a buffet line in the kitchen and just scoop up what they need based off of a particular order. Had some food from there the other day. The chicken was real good, although a little overcooked, and the mac salad was good, just like the islands. My problem is when I checked their health inspection I was a bit disgusted. Dead cock roaches and food temps were cited along with several other things. The thought of cock roaches walking on the counters just really grosses me out. Hopefully they have an exterminator coming in on a regular basis now. read more

Simple flavors, uncomplicated food. I'm a fan of luau food, I first tried it many years ago.. loved it, this is the kind of food a meat and potatoes guy will love. Hula hands IMHO put polynesian food on the map in Anchorage. Kaluha Pork is their claim to fame, simple slow cooked pork, in its own juices, so soft you could eat it with a spoon, simple flavors like smoke, salt and most importantly is tastes like pork, not something slathered in some sauce. Can I get an amen?! I'm a fan of the plate combo, this meat and potato guy will gladly enjoy the choice of two special.. Kaluha Pig, Teriyaki Beef, rice and Mac. Meaty, starchy goodness, with a little of that mac salad to break up the flavors a bit with the creamy, onion, peppery goodness, and that tiny bit of crunch from the veggies to break up the textures a bit. They do tend to overcook the proteins, especially the beef, and its a bit chewy and tough at times. Lunch time is usually packed on a weekday.. and for good reason. people love this place. I love it late night on the weekend. I can eat luau food, knock back a few beers and just pretend i'm in hawaii. read more

I give this place a five-star because it was a nice little place with great Haiwaiian food. I had one of the Special Island Combo: Laulau, Kalua pig, Lomi salmon, and Chicken long rice soup. The four food items were great and I really enjoyed the chicken long rice and kalua pig. =D The portion was good, I was so full. The price seems well-priced. Best Poly food around. Everything on the menu is good here. Of course you get big portions for good prices. I have always loved Kalua Pork so I tend to get it often and I also love Chicken Katsu. No matter what I get, I have to have their Mac Salad because they make it the best.
