Service was very quick and swift, though that might changing depending on time of day. My order was the Jumbo Mango Chewy Ball, which came with a bottom layer of mango jelly, a whole mango ice cream scoop, topped off with copious amounts of mochi balls and sweet mango fruit. Sounds like a strange amalgamation at first, but each layer of the dessert is intentionally fine-tuned to complement each other. The soft, chewy, and elastic mochi balls added a unique contrast in texture to the overall smoothie-like consistency of the dish, while the bottom layer of jelly was milder in sweetness to balance out the sugary scoop of ice cream. I didn't realize this is more of a dessert place, there is no milk tea in the menu, but lots of Asian desserts and lots of mango! I ended up going with a taro sago, and I enjoyed the taro flavor, but thought the sago was not very fresh and didn't have the best texture. I've always wanted to try Hui Lay Shan but every time I drove by it, the line was way too long so after 3 attempts, I finally got to try it. I think the South Bay locations are just busier because when I went to the Berkeley location, I was shocked to see no line. FYI - there isn't really a place to eat the dessert inside and parking is terrible so I dropped my friends off and drove around while they got our dessert and we ended up eating it in the car. This is my first time having Hui Lau Shan at this location and it was on par with the times I've tried it in SoCal. I got the mango and coconut sago. The fruit was really fresh and the overall drink was refreshing and satisfying for a hot day. I ordered on snackpass. The drinks are stored in a fridge when ready and a staff will grab it for you. This is a nice touch since most other drink places will leave snackpass orders on the counter. It is a plus if you go when mangos are in season as they are sweeter and tastier. Let me preface that I am not a fruit person whatsoever, I despise fruits, especially mangos, but Hui Lau Shan takes that distaste and turns it into want! I actually crave mangos now because of them. First impressions: small store with only a counter and a couple of tables for dine-in. I bought my food through Snackpass, but there is a kiosk at the front to place your order as well. Staff was super friendly. I got A2: Mango Romance, and while it was pretty good, it was pretty much what you'd expect. The portions were much smaller than I'd realized - you get a little bit of everything: sizeable mango chunks, glutinous rice balls, mango mochi, mango pudding. For a hot summer day, it was refreshing! The mango was slightly tangy, but I guess they weren't super in season when I went. So far, I've tried the taro black glutinous rice porridge (highly recommend!), the mango romance, and the coconut mango sago slushie. I love how the mango chunks/purée always taste super fresh, and the taro porridge even comes with real taro chunks. I feel like the chewy balls could be boiled for a tad longer to soften the glutinous rice more, though. I was very impressed by the mango mochi--it's delightfully crisp to bite into and has the perfect amount of sweetness.
