Teaspoon is a reliably good boba chain wherever you go. This particular location is as good as the rest of them--not any better or worse. My family and I ordered our drinks, and I got the Lychee on Lychee, half sweetness. It was still REALLY sweet (like 100% sweet-tasting), and the tea flavor wasn't as strong as I'd like. Also, for some reason, it was super difficult to pierce the drink tops with the paper straws they use. Staff were helpful when my parents had a difficult time ordering with gift card. Not much to say about the interior! There's a couple tables, but it's a small space overall. Overall, Teaspoon is just okay. read more

Esther made what could have turned into a pretty unpleasant experience to a totally positive one. Thank you Esther for taking care of us tonight! For some reasons, the rewards on my app was not scanning/registering on their side of the system. Esther was trying her best to scan my rewards barcode and use the discounts shown in my profile but the system kept selecting a different one for us. She was patient in working through the issue despite her being the only worker in the store at that moment with multiple drink orders coming in. I believe her partner was on break and instead of just ignoring my issue, she went and called her manager, Tania to help as well. They were trying to troubleshoot together over the phone which I really appreciated. I told them it's ok, I didn't want to hold up their orders over my silly problem but they were both insistent in making sure I was taken care of. Thank you for taking the time in making me feel like a valued customer and not looking the other way when a problem arises. We opted for the Watermelon Series (Flamingo + Lychee Breeze) and both were very refreshing for this summer night. I've always been a fan of the Teaspoon brand. So when I saw that there was a Teaspoon nearby while in Berkeley, I knew I had to stop by for a drink. The shop is pretty small, with very little seating available. It is however clean and well lit, and the baristas were all very friendly as well. They strangely enough had a "Soft Opening" sign above their entrance, so we asked them if they were having any soft opening specials. It turns out they did their soft opening last NOVEMBER (1 year ago)! Not sure why the sign is still up after all this time. Ordered a Guava Sunset, and boba topping was an additional $1 add-on. The boba itself was a bit firm, so was rather disappointed with the drink. Additionally, the cup they use at this location appears to be thinner and smaller than the typical cup I get from other Teaspoon locations. read more

I think Teaspoon is a fine option for boba if you are in the area but I imagine this shop must have really tough competition with places like Asha, Happy Lemon, and even U:Dessert Story nearby. We tried a bunch of drinks all with boba (there are several other options for toppings but I am a boba person through and through): Taro Lover (taro paste with milk and chunks of taro) Black Assam (black tea with milk) Silky Strawberry (milk with strawberry syrup/preserve) Starlight Sesame (hojicha milk tea with crème brûlée foam and black sesame) Their honey boba is decent and has a chewy texture to it. For the drinks where I could customize the sweetness I adjusted to 25% and felt that was sufficient (unlike most Asians, though, I love sugar). That said, the drinks themselves did taste artificial and left something to be desired. Staff were pleasant and efficient and we didn't have to wait too long for our drinks. If I were to come back, I would recommend the Starlight Sesame, but I think it's a seasonal drink only, unfortunately! read more

Berkeley is not shy of boba shops. My friend and I were seeking boba after our meal and Teaspoon was nearby and open later than other spots. This tea shop is on the smaller end with only two tables. Most customers take their drinks to go. Ordering is a breeze which you do at the kiosk and wait for your name to be called. Our drinks took less than five minutes to be made by the sweet staff which was appreciated! There's a variety of milk and fruit teas, some are caffeinated and others aren't. Adjustments for ice and sweetness can be made plus fairly alternatives are available. Since it was late at night, the non-caffeinated Silky Mango, Light Ice, and Oat Milk called to me. I found the Silky Mango to be extremely sweet, and creamy, with nicely cooked boba. My friend had the Dirty Ube with Oat Milk. The drinks are a little pricey but a good size! Teaspoon is a small yet reasonable spot for drinks in Downtown Berkeley. They have locations all over the nation, with this one tucked away off University Ave. It's easily accessible by foot with street parking around. read more

Have always wanted to try this place and was thankful I got the opportunity to! Teaspoon is location in a busy area near UC Berkeley and a ton of surrounding businesses however, there is street parking if you're lucky. The location is small with minimal seating but it does have bright lighting and a bathroom. The menu is full of items but is easy to read and many great options to choose from. The location was busy and Teaspoon only had two workers onsite working hard to get the orders out as quickly as possible. I ordered the Mango Funtime smoothie which was very flavorful and reminded me of a Lucas Popsicle. Pricing was not too crazy and they have a deal if you download the app. read more

I like that there is seating inside and a kiosk to order if there is ever a line. Today was their soft opening! I got there three hours after it opened and the line wasn't too long. It's a small space, but it looks very modern and clean. On the right when you enter, there is a large TV displaying their menu of drinks. The people working up front were super welcoming and told us about what was going on for their first day. They had samples of their lemon bar and some of their signature drinks like the Grasshopper on the counter in front. We ordered a Black Sugar Assam and a Creamy Jasmine to go. I'm unsure how long this promotion is going for, but if you are following them on instagram, then you receive a discount of 5% off! The drinks were made super quickly and they made sure to tell us to shake our drinks. The black sugar assam was really good; the pearls were soft and full of flavor that paired well with the rest of the drink. The lemon bar sample, even though it was small, had a good lemon profile that I would like to try in full sometime. One thing about Teaspoon is that their limited specialty drinks are always interesting to me, so I ventured into trying out the Ube Astra. Generally I like ube, but the drink was not to my liking which is only why I gave it less star. I may come back and try a general drink and revise my review but it was too sweet for me and lacked ube flavoring. The ambiance is nice. The seating is pretty small but it works well for a boba shop near a college. The seating and ambiance is directed to small hangouts with friends or studying/working. After viewing and absorbing recommendations from the staff, I decided to go to customization mode and pick a drink. Turned out though, the one I customized was pretty close to the Liquid Gold specialty drink, except I requested crystal boba. This drink was very good. I loved the bold flavor of the oolong standing out from the cream. It didn't get lost by the creamy milk, so every sip had a pleasant roasted flavor. I was glad to have asked the staff about the better option to add toppings into this drink and chose the crystal boba. I was thinking of either the regular boba or the coconut, but they have advised me to pick ones with less flavor or the toppings will mask away the tea -- and my focus was the tea. For me, crystal boba or the sago are my go-tos when I want some chewy texture in my drink but I want to focus on the tea flavor. Because it's located conveniently in the busier sides of Berkeley, I think I'll walk by here and grab a cup of tea. read more

I think I got the liquid gold drink and I like to lessen my sugar. My friend accidentally added 0 sugar to his drink then told them that was on accident because he wanted full sugar, they then re made it for him with no issues. I ordered a caramel drink with some Boba and it was OK. Way too sweet for my taste, but it's fine if that's what people want. When I went in, I was ignored, but a blond, tattooed woman helped me. The machine for covering the drinks wasn't working. I had to wait a long time for my drink. I think that I probably won't be back here. Not because of her, she was great. But there were five to six people in the back and not one stepped in to help. The woman who helped me apologized for the wait, but that's OK. I have no reason to really come back here. Ordering is through their kiosk by the counter, so not much service - even though there were only a few customers inside at the time. Came here on a rainy day. Not busy at all! I love teaspoon but this location was very disappointing! I ordered the strawberry colada and it was not filled up all the way like other locations I've been to. It was also not very slushy-like as it was more on melted/ watery side compared to the other locations I've been to. The staff was also not very friendly. I asked about adding my phone number to my purchase and received a not so friendly response telling me no they cannot do that post-payment. I also forgot to check-in on Yelp for the discount as order was done on a kiosk and staff was too busy making drinks in the back to assist at the cashier. I came in on a Tuesday around 2:30, evidently a slow period considering the lack of any person in the store-- neither customer nor employee (at least in my view). I understand that when time gets slow, an employee may be in the back doing other things, but it is odd that there is no notification sound (chime, jingle, etc.) when a customer orders at the kiosk to signal to the employee that there has been an order. I ordered from the kiosk, a receipt was printed behind the counter, and then I sat down to wait. After a few minutes of silence, the employee came out and started making the drink. I'm not saying that this greatly inconvenienced me or was a terrible event that enraged me, it was just a slightly odd set up. I pass by Teaspoon every day on the way from work, so one day I decided to have a look. I am glad I stopped by, as I discovered their generous reward program and never looked back. So far I tried three drinks. Thai tea had beautiful layers and deliciously and uniformly chewy, still warm boba. Matcha Royale was also delicious and you can adjust sweetness level. But I think my new favorite is Ladybug. It took me by surprise - tea with generous serving of passionfruit. And not just passionfruit flavored syrup, but real passionfruit pulp, still with seeds. Delicious!!! For me it was even more fun to crunch on the seeds, than to chew on boba.
