I think Howlin Rays is still one of the top places for hot chicken. The chicken is tender juicy and flavorful no matter what piece of the bird you order. The sandwich is still my favorite thing to order but chicken wings as you can see are pretty large as well and make for a filling meal. One order of fries is large enough to share and the Mac salad was creamy and dill forward. It definitely helps to cool down the mouth. If you like spicy but still want to be able to taste your food try ordering a "medium plus". For me medium doesn't give me the kick that I want and hot makes me feel like the chef in the back was mad at me. Medium plus is the perfect in between. Once you order a worker will keep an eye out for an open table and let you know where to sit. Yes this service is necessary so they can be sure that people without food aren't saving seats ahead of time. It isn't the coolest (temperature wise) inside so you'll see a lot of people sweating as they enjoy their food but just mind your business, they probably ordered the wrong heat level and are fighting a battle you don't want to know about. 9/10 times there will always be a line so be prepared to wait. I have yet to find out what the sweet spot is where there isn't a line but you've been warned. Rain or shine though they do provide umbrellas and they're usually at the front entrance or you can just ask a worker.
Howlin' Ray's is always a top spot for a solid Southern-style chicken sando. The chicken is perfectly crispy around the edges while staying juicy and tender inside, and the combination of pickles and coleslaw gives the sandwich an amazing balance of flavor and texture. I also got the shake fries, vinegar slaw, and their special sauce, and I'm glad I did--the sauce complemented the sando really well, while the sides rounded out the meal nicely. The staff was friendly, the food was great, and even though there's almost always a line, it's still a great experience. I also appreciate the little touches, like Aesop soap in the restroom and complimentary still and sparkling water on the side. Definitely worth the wait!
After seeing the line, I was tempted to walk away and try again later. But honestly, the line ended up being part of the amazing experience at Howlin Ray's. If you're willing to wait in line for some hot chicken, turns out you might have other things in common. We met so many great people in line and the restaurant provides umbrellas for the heat and came out with waters for people waiting in line. From then, we were already sold. But then came the food- omg the food!! I've had Nashville hot chicken before so I'm always a little skeptical of hot chicken places not in Nashville claiming to be the best... but the Sando (got it in mild) was perfection! Loved the tenders too. My 7-year old had to get no spice and still found it flavorful. Beware though if you don't like spice- the fries are spicy. Don't skip on the banana pudding. This southern girl fully approves! Service was literally top notch! There wasn't a single employee we met who we didn't instantly want to be best friends with! How does this place attract so much great service?! My 10-year old says this was a "10 out of 10 stars" and "worth the wait"! I agree! Bravo Howlin!
Small parking lot or street parking available! There is often a wait so the lot is always full, especially shared with Sidecar Doughnuts right next door. On a Sunday evening at about 6:30 PM, it was about a 20 min wait for us. We got two chicken sandwiches (mild) and an order of fries! Both hit the spot and the fries were nicely seasoned. Workers are all so friendly! We came with our pup and dined in their small outdoor patio. One of the workers got our pup a piece of chicken and ice water!
I'm back! Best part, no wait. The Tenders are so tasty! The spice, the crunch, and the chicken. My friend salivated thinking about it. It was a hot day and what better way then to have no lines when we went!!!!! Thank you for that Southern Customer Service!! Always a vibe at the Howlin' Rays and Juce holding down the Fort!!
From the first time I had The Sando at The Hundreds Family Style Food Festival VIP area back in 2019, I have loved their food. No matter how long the lines were in Chinatown and the rush to order online as we waited for a time slot to open just to be able to have their food delivered during the store closures of COVID, we have never been able to find a hot chicken that can match their quality and flavors. We happened to be at Stone Brewing Tap Room in Pasadena and were getting hungry as we were enjoying the brews there and didn't want to leave. Enter Postmates! We ordered and received our food in approximately 20 minutes. All the food arrived hot, fresh and delicious! If you want to skip the line as they can be long at times, consider Postmates as it's super convenient and you'll receive your order with the same quality you would expect from eating at the restaurant. Also, this was the first time we ordered their banana pudding and it was delicious! Don't forget to order a couple of sides of their Comeback Sauce. It's to die for! It's the perfect dipping sauce for their crispy fries!
I've passed by Howlin Rays numerous times. Often times I was short on time and unwilling to wait in the long lines they attract. Howlin in Pasadena is one of the few establishments that commands a long line aside for some bakeries like Slated Butter, Artsinal Goods by Carr. Parking is hard to find and I had to park one at shake shack on a Friday afternoon. The main parking lot is shared with sidecar donuts. I kind of scratch my head that Side Car donuts is not as popular as Howlin, when it's easily the best donut shop in town. I ended up waiting about 30 minutes in line, when I came at a somewhat off peak time. I had my eye on the Luis Style Sando so I ordered that. Think of it as part grilled cheese sandwhich and Nashville hot chicken. I ordered mild which had only a minimal kick to it. The sandwhich was delicious, the bread was perfectly toasted, nice melted cheese. What really stood out for Howlin than other fried chicken places was the slaw. There was something about that slaw that tasted better than any other hot chicken sandwhich I tasted. All together the sandwhich was delicious, got to order Luis style all the time now if I'm in the mood for a sandwich. Ambiance is very hip hop music and a hip setting. Seating can be limited when there are crowds. As much as I didn't want to believe they hype the acclaim is well deserved depending upon what you order.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lively atmosphere and friendly service. The sando was surprisingly good. Next time, I want to try their tenders because the chicken alone was delicious. For the spice level, we went with medium, which was not that spicy. Next time I'd definitely want to go up a level for a stronger kick. That said, the wings did not skimp on seasoning but for me personally, just a bit salty. The fries were fresh and tasty but more delightful with the sauce they provided. I appreciated the hard kombucha on tap. It was so perfect on a hot afternoon. I'd actually come back just for the kombucha and vibes ... and more pins and stickers!
Howlin' Ray's is always a vibe from the music to the friendly customer service. I visited on a Friday evening and while there was a line, it was totally worth it. I ordered a Sando with cheese and it was really good! You can taste the quality of the chicken and the fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned. If you are dining in, they will help you find a table. Parking can be a little tricky since the parking lot is small, but I was able to find street parking nearby. Definitely worth checking out!
I've always wanted to try this place because of all these great reviews, and it did not disappoint. I ordered The Sando. When I unwrapped the sandwich, I was like "Damn!! That's a huge breast". It was really big and juicy and flavorful. It wasn't greasy and messy. I got it medium heat, and it was pretty hot. I was going to order hot, but they convinced me that since it's my first time I should go with medium. It was a good call because I want to enjoy my food and not be on the toilet all night. I also got the shake fries and those were really delicious. They were fresh and the spice that they use is so good. I took my order to go and when I was driving home, I ate all the fries. I got there a little bit after they opened, and the line wasn't too long. For parking there's a small lot in the back, shared with other businesses. The inside is very clean, and I like the vibe of the place. Their customer service is exceptional. I felt so welcomed and taken care of. When I was ordering they were so helpful in explaining the menu and recommending what I should try. When I was waiting for my food, the person getting the food out to people was very friendly and checking in on me as I waited for food. Took about like 15 minutes. They do take their time and I appreciate that. They were being very precise with the orders and how they pack it and get it ready for the customer. The kitchen is very quiet it's like the opposite of "The Bear". I will definitely come back again.
We stopped by after the lunch rush, but there was still a pretty long line outside. Thankfully the staff had umbrellas available for guests waiting in the heat, which was really thoughtful. We ended up waiting about 20-30 mins, and it was well worth it. Ordering was quick and easy, and the staff was incredibly friendly. They generously offered samples of the Hot, X-Hot, and Howlin' spice levels, which made it easy to decide what to order. The chicken sandwich was huge, juicy, and packed with flavor. The fried chicken was delicious as well, but the tenders ended up being our favorite item on their menu because the chicken felt less dry. They were perfectly crispy, tender, and full of flavor. Highly recommend the comeback sauce and ranch!! What really made this place stand out was the customer service. Everyone was genuinely kind, welcoming, and eager to help, making the entire experience even better. Between the incredible food and outstanding hospitality, this is definitely a place we'll be coming back to.

Dare I say the best Nashville style hot chicken sandwich I've ever had?! The chicken rub had such flavorful spices that gave the spiciness depth. Medium was perfect for me (mostly cayenne and jalapeño spices). We also tried the secret medium+ level (adds a bit of habanero) and it felt like a pretty unexpected jump in spice that had us sweating, but it hurt sooo good. Their chicken is way bigger, not to mention juicier, crunchier, and a lot more flavorful than their popular chain counterparts/competitors. The slaw was tasty and the comeback sauce was tangy, slightly sweet, and cut through the spice well. Fries were well seasoned and crispy. Line was out the door, but for good reason! You order at the register and then an employee seats you as soon as a table is available. It's an organized suParking can be a bit difficult to find in the lot behind the restaurant. Incredibly friendly service too, from the kind employee at the register helping us decide between heat levels to the hospitable employees checking in on us once we got our food.

All right! All Right! This place deserves their high ratings and long lines. But they run this business like CHAMPS! This place is bustling so expect a line, but they are very efficient and when you do get up to order they greet you with a smile and make sure to answer all your questions. No disgruntled workers at Howlin's! This is a testament to the management, even with staff shortages and how busy they are. Kudos! Hot chix sandwich = delicious. But here is my WARNING. I love me some spicy food, and apparently got too cocky here and ordered a little above my pay grade. They don't mess around here so be careful and if it's your 1st time go less spicy. My lunch was still yummy, but I think I would've enjoyed it more if I went less spicy. But the cashier did warn me, even tho I thought I could handle that Nashville Heat (I was wrong) Next time I'm rollin' thru Pasadena, I'm planning to make a stop here. :) read more

Finally after several years waiting, I had Howlin' Rays. The wait at 12 on a weekday was under 10 minutes, and the cashier and all the staff were super helpful and seemed to enjoy working there. Now on to the food, the sandwich was every bit just as good as I thought it would be. Even with my case of hot chicken fatigue in LA, you can see why HR stands above all by a mile. Might be the best macaroni salad I've ever had too. read more

My husband and I were big fans of the Howlin Rays in Chinatown and we finally had a chance to visit the Pasadena location. Of course the food is still consistently so delicious. And spicy!! However the decor and ambiance of the new spot is top notch! The wait seems a lot shorter (can't confirm because we used a fast pass) but it didn't seem nearly as long as the other location. They also make it easy and find seating for you which we love. Highly recommend! read more

1st thing I noticed upon arriving was this huge line out the door. I have never been here and was caught by surprise with this line. Took us about 20-25 minutes to put in our order, but let me tell you it's WORTH THE WAIT! Service- The tables are not free for all seating, once you receive your receipt after ordering, you then check in for a table if you opt to eat there. Took about 5 minutes before we got our table & another 10 minutes before getting our order. I truly appreciate the efficient service that was provided by all the workers there considering how busy it was. Food- The Luis style Sando was not on the menu, I only seen pictures from Yelp with the sandwich bread instead of the regular burger bun but they said they still very much make it in that way. The side of fries is a must to pair along this massive sandwich. The flavor and spice was absolutely 10/10 on this sandwich. You can't go wrong with thier highly recommended Sando order. Parking- They do have their own parking lot but it can be crowded. It wasn't an issue for us though, we just had to circle around the lot once or twice before we seen someone leaving and grabbed a spot. Ambience- They had hiphop/rap music bumping and the latest hits too! I myself enjoy this type of music so it was a mini party for me. Overall, this was a great 1st time experience for myself. Definitely will be coming back to try the rest of the menu. read more

All I really have to say is wow. My boyfriend loves a good chicken sandwich, especially if it's a hot chicken sandwich. We had known about Howlin Rays, so we jumped at the opportunity to try it. I ordered a Sando with medium heat and some fries and comeback sauce. This was by far, the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. The acidity and heat and flavor and crispiness was so well balanced and everything I wanted in a sandwich. The potato salad also slapped. And I don't like potato salad. This is such a guilty pleasure. This is the only chicken sandwich I will ever eat. read more

This is one of the best chicken sandwich place I've ever had! I've read reviews that it was mid, but it exceeded my expectations! I also had the fries which I forgot to take a picture of. The fries were coated in some type of chilly powder and salt and something else. The fries were prob one of the best fries ever. The customer service was great and if you want to get seated, you have to order your food first to get a ticket number before the servers seat you. There's outdoor seating but it wasn't that cold sitting outside because they had outdoor heaters. The unfortunate part was that there was a line where we waited for 45-60 minutes. I don't think it was worth the wait, but I heard that this place is the only place with seating which is probably why it was more popular. Food was called pretty quickly after we placed our order. I think it was another 10-15 minute wait or less. I'm not sure. read more

I've always wanted to try Howlin' Ray's, and I was super excited to see that they opened a location in Pasadena!! We waited about 1.5 hours from the time we got there to the time it took to get our food, but it was 100% worth it. We ordered the medium tenders and fries and hot tenders and waffles. The spice was flavorful and spicy, the chicken was super juicy, and the fries were crispy. The hot was HOT lol. I recommend medium spice level unless you're brave and can take the heat. The staff was extremely nice and made sure that we were taken care of. A few of the employees introduced themselves to us and shook our hands, which was really thoughtful. Howlin' Ray's is hands down the best Nashville hot chicken! read more

Having tried nearly every "Hot Chicken" Place in LA, we finally made the hour drive to Pasadena and yes, all the hype is legit. Best hot chicken in town -- maybe the world? Came on a Sunday at 4pm and the wait was about 40 minutes. Not a ton of people on line -- but they only had one register open and 1 guy to take orders. They told me it was because they don't want the kitchen to get slammed (as they also take alot of Postmates orders for delivery). Free parking lot in back but it was full but we got a spot on the street. Not a ton of seating but they seem to manage it well (Thank you Javier for found us a spot on the back patio as we had our dog with us). We shared alot of food like: Chicken Tenders a mix of "Mild' and "Medium" but the winner was the medium as it had enough heat while not being killer hot. G/f loved her "Country Style" sando (no heat) but tons of flavor with pickles and cole slaw. (Sauce on side). My large chicken wing was also fab -- as was the cole slaw, the AMAZING fries, and the banana pudding for desert. Oh, they have 5 or 6 different beers on tap too. If you don't like waiting in line, I was told Wed. and Thurs. are less crowded. (They are closed Monday and Tuesday and at 7pm every day). Guess they don't need the extra dough. This is a well run, clean organization and if they wanted to -- they could be the In N Out of the hot chicken world. PLEASE OPEN ONE UP ON THE WESTSIDE SO WE COULD COME MORE OFTEN! read more
Simply the best! I really appreciate being able to test the heat level with a sample before I jumped into spicy. Turns out, it was perfect. This chicken is so perfectly cooked and evenly spiced, it's no wonder there's always a line. If Nashville hot chicken is your thing, skip TSA and head to Pasadena. We were so lucky to have gone on a day were we only waited 15 minutes in line! I don't know how we got so lucky but we did. Even if you have to wait longer the wait is totally worth the wait. I had the mild chicken strips and my husband had the hot chicken sandwich. We both really enjoyed our food. Every one of the workers here is truly awesome and sweet. They go above and beyond to make sure your experience and food are top notch. read more

took my buddy from oc on a mini food tour, and howlin was one of the stops. I've been to and ordered delivery from the Chinatown location multiple times and never had a complaint about food quality. sando was always gigantic, juicy, and tasty. their prices were always justified. service always great. the Pasadena howlin was definitely hype as well with a winding line around the front of the building even during an off hour around 4pm but moved at a decent pace. even for a person who hates lines, it wasn't terrible chatting with a friend. when we got towards the front one of the employees brought out an iPad to take our order along with the regularly stationed cashier behind the counter. our mobile cashier was efficient, cool, and highly recommended the banana pudding we were contemplating trying. we waited briefly for our food and when our number was called was cheerily served our food. I recognized the guy dispensing orders at the pick up station from the Chinatown location. he recommended combining our waffle order with the banana pudding. Staff was great. the lone and big disappointment was the main show, the chicken sando. noticeably, the chicken was almost paper thin. didn't think much of it at first, but when I took a bite was disappointed. looking at the pics now, i realize how flimsy the chicken actually was. the slaw to chicken ratio was just way too much. smash chicken sandwich? I've always loved howlin due to their quality and thick chicken in their sandos and have never been disappointed. but this was a huge disappointment especially with a buddy making a long trek and trying it for the first time after my vouching for the sando as a must try. due to the thin chicken slice, the balance of the spicy seasoning wasn't there, and it tasted too salty. look at the pic. hopefully this was just an irregular chicken slice and one off, but if this is the new norm, I wouldn't recommend howlin. pudding, waffle, and service was bomb though. but we came here for the sando. the parking sucks here. found parking right away but some big ass truck parked in the lanes not meant for parking making it a pain to get out. i'll come back eventually for another chance whenever the hot chicken craving comes but i'll probably just go to the og location in LA. *edit* i appreciate the message from the business manager offering a direct pickup order on the house to make up for the subpar sandwich. i'll take them up on the offer when i'm in pasadena again and update when i do. following in line with the great customer service here, which i cannot knock. read more
Howlin Rays is just TOO cool. The layout of this restaurant is cool, the aesthetic is cool, the employees are the absolute coolest. It's just a vibe. Everyone is so friendly and willing to help, went in when it was super busy, made a joke to one of the employees that I'd never find a seat and he told me not to worry about it that another employee would help me find one. They did! Food is top tier and I will ALWAYS compare hot chicken sandwiches to it. Nothing has come close, but a lot of places claim to. It's not just spicy fried chicken, it's heavily seasoned to perfection, so much flavor. Really big sandwich, very well could be shared but I wouldn't. read more

I am revising my review because they have reached out to me and was very understanding with what happened to us that day. I am very impressed with how they treat their customers. They want to keep us as customers, and I appreciate that so much! Like I mentioned on my original review, the food is so delicious and scrumptious!! The flavor is unmatched. The heat is punchy, just the way I like it! The chicken is so crunchy and so juicy. They have a great location with plenty of parking. The restaurant itself is kept clean and is run like a well oiled machine. They have such a sweet and efficient team. Thank you for your professionalism, we can all learn from you. read more
What an amazing restaurant with wonderful staff! Expect to wait about 40 minutes to be able to order your meal, but it will definitely come out fast once you have ordered it! I like that there is a staff member who is guiding everyone to a table, I was worried about not finding a seat, but I was able to! I ordered the collard greens (a must) and the banana pudding (the absolute best) for my sides and I have to say, everything was fresh and incredible! Everything was delicious! The sandwiches are so flavorful and they pair so well with a beer. The service was also really good-- kind people and with good energy. They helped seat us, we ate outdoors and it was just good vibes! I was listening to Chicken Fried and my date chose this spot. Happy we got to have some chicken fried and a cold beer... even if it was on a Thursday and not a Friday night. We will be back again. read more

It was such a great experience, we came here for the first time and just ordered fries and the Sando. While we were eating one of the workers gave us a free waffle! They were so nice and polluted. I highly recommend coming here. The food was also delicious no wonder why it was packed out the door. In my opinion this is one of the best chicken locations I been to and they should give that nice man a raise. read more

The staff is very friendly. One of my friends even got a fist bump from the cashier that helped them. The food is definitely spicy! I got a mild and it still made me sweat-- I only got through it with the help of my sweet peach tea. If you can't handle your spice, you should go country! Very chill vibes, they close at 7 but still helped everyone out that was in line until 7:40-ish. To be fair, the line was pretty long though. We got there at 6:20 and ordered our food at 7:10. I really want to give it 5 stars, but after going back for the first time in over 3 years and the first time trying the Pasadena location, I have to give it a 4. The location was definitely not as busy as the 1.5 hour line I waited in at the Chinatown spot, but the small parking lot was still not enough. After waiting 10 minutes in line at 12 pm on a Wednesday, we placed a huge order to share between two people. We ordered a medium sando, medium tender, fries, mac n cheese, fried pickles, and banana pudding. The sandwich was really good, but it didn't taste as good as I remembered. It used to be thicker and juicier pieces of breast meat. That said, fresh slaw really balances out the spice. The fried pickles aren't exactly on the menu, but they have them and they're the best you can find. The fries are extra crispy, which are perfect in every way, but I'd skip the Mac n cheese. Howlin Rays is still one of the best to do it, but it's somewhere that I'll go only every once in a while. The opening of this location has really helped more people get to try them out without having to wait in a never ending line. After the last time, I had to show my sister this location for amazing chicken sandwiches and once again, the food and service impressed me. I noticed that they came out with the new sandwich, so we got one Sando 2.0 to share, which was deliciously juicy and flavorful. I do prefer the original sando more though. The coleslaw and pickles made the sandwich feel lighter and more refreshing. The sweet piquillo peppers in the 2.0 were really good, but I found that when combined with cheese and sweet honey mustard, the sandwich felt heavy after a while. The waitress who took our order was concerned that we would not be full off of one sandwich, so she put an order of waffles for us--on the house. We did not know until the food came out. We were so confused but very touched when we found out. She was so so so sweet about it and we appreciated her very much. read more

Hi Martie - Our Vinegar Slaw, Collard Greens, Shake Fries, Pickles, and Comeback Sauce are all gluten free! However, due to the tight quarters of the restaurant, there is the possibility that most items are exposed to gluten!
