Place was packed around 630-7pm. Mostly of people waiting to pick up their food. Got the tsunami nachos with ponzu crunch. It was good at first but the salmon had too much sauce. There wasnt that much fish but i did like the crab salad. The gingcurri sauce tasted like hainan chicken's ginger sauce. Not sure how i feel about that one. But yes i feel like poke here is sauce dependent. The sauces werent labeled so couldnt tell what they were. I didnt want to waste plastic cups to try them either. One of my favorite things to do in Hawaii is check out poke spots, so I was thrilled when Ry's opened in Pasadena. No need to book a ticket to the islands to satisfy my poke cravings. 4 stars!!!! I've been to Ry's a couple of times now, and I'll definitely be back for the Lao Style and the Gingahchurri--my top two so far! I've also tried the Shoyu, Limu, Ponzu Crunch, and Spicy Hawaiian, but the Lao Style and Gingahchurri are by far the most flavorful. You can choose between tuna and salmon, but this comes down to personal preference. Either fish, expect the fish to be super fresh and delicious! Looking forward to trying out more flavors in my future visits. Why only four stars? My first visit was disappointingly underwhelming. The Shoyu seemed underseasoned, while the Spicy Hawaiian was a bit too rich and creamy for my taste. I never write a Yelp review after just one visit, so I'm glad I came back and got to try the Lao Style and Gingahchurri! I've also tried the Tsunami Nachos, and I'm not a big fan of the fried wonton chips since they were a little too oily. Tortilla chips might work better. Finally, the rice in the poke bowls could definitely be improved. If you're lucky, you'll catch the owner, Ryan, at the shop. He's incredibly nice and hospitable! On my second visit, he actually listened to all of my feedback from my first experience, which I really appreciated. Seating is limited and you might have to wait a bit for a table to open up. Parking can also be challenging in the strip mall parking lot, and looking for free street parking might be the better choice. It's nice to have a branch of a Hawaiian poke shop here in the mainland. Everything looks and tastes just like how you'd have it in Hawaii. I liked how customizable everything was including the types of sauces. There was also tons of Hawaiian Sun drinks and more as drinks for you to grab. I took it to go and unlike the usual bready nachos, these were made out of deep fried wonton skins. Which gave it an airy and arguably less oily bite than something like Mexican tortilla chips. The one downside is how far away it is located from the usual Old Town Pasadena area. It's actually in East Pasadena and pretty close to where Pasadena becomes Arcadia. But if you make it a little errand trip by bundling it with places like the Home Depot and Target, I can see this place being just a takeout only. I ordered the two-choice salmon bowl with the Ponzu Crunch and California flavors. It is served over rice with a cucumber salad in the center. Before I knew it, I had happily polished off the entire box. My husband went with a two-choice featuring the Limu flavor tuna and an off-menu option called Papa Bid Lemongrass with tofu. The only big difference is the fish cuts are much smaller cubes, like seen in the California styled ones. My two friends and I ordered one Tsunami Nachos with shoyu ahi and one large poke bowl with spicy tobiko ahi and ponzu crunch to share. It was a total of $50, and we were comfortably full with no leftovers. Our favorite was the nachos (which were light, wonton chips). It came with one scoop of fish, which was pretty big. The imitation crab was flaky and tasty. The rice from the poke bowl helped to balance out the saltiness of the poke, although it was a bit mushy. In terms of poke flavors, my friends and I preferred Shoyu and spicy tobiko. Spicy tobiko was not spicy, not even for my friends with low spice tolerance. Have tried almost every flavor by now, with faves being kamikaze, spicy tobiko, & limu. There's a line at times, but service is friendly & fairly quick once you've ordered. The restaurant interior only has about six tables & they're first-come, first-served, so you may not always be able to eat onsite. I've seen a few comments about price, & it is a little expensive but it's high quality, good portions, & some of the only authentic poke in the area, so VERY worth it in my opinion. Went right after work around 4pm, so there wasn't much of a wait but parking was definitely a bit tricky. The fish was super fresh, no doubt about that.
