Justin was working the register and there was a customer who walked up and was talking with friends who he saw in line. The customer used this as a way to cut the line and stayed until his friends walked ahead and ordered. As I approached the counter to order Justin asked how I was doing and I politely told him the guy cut the line and used his friends as a decoy. Justin apologized and took my order and made sure if I needed assistance with ordering he was there to help. Justin and Jael were exceptional and their customer service was top tier. And the order checkers don't thoroughly check to make sure that your order is correct. They look in the boxes, but aren't checking off all components. The line was out the door when we got there and we probably waiting about 15 minutes before we got to the front of the line. Employees passed around umbrellas for everyone in line so we wouldn't roast in the sun. There are some tables inside and a few outside in the back patio. But by the time we got to order there weren't any tables available so we decided to take it to go. The servers were friendly and helpful. While we can tolerate some heat, the servers remind you that their version of hot is HOT. We got each Sando 2.0 in Hot and Medium. Aside from the spice level of the sauces which were earth scorching spicy- I found the Sando 2.0 a messy sandwhich. The piquillo peppers were good on their own, but they were shoved and piled high onto the sandwich. The chicken breast was a thick ol' piece and I just found it hard to hold and eat the whole thick. What an amazing place, all around. From the time we walked in, we were greeted and treated so well. We're a family of 6, so ordering with 4 kids can take awhile. The guy taking our order was so respectful and took his time with us. He didn't rush us at all and suggested additional menu items for our kiddos. The chicken sandwich was the best I've ever had. Ever since Howlin' Rays opened in Chinatown, I've heard nothing but hype about their chicken and how it's the best. Years passed and the hype still remained - but I'm not about to duke it out in DTLA to wait all day for hot chicken, so we tried their relatively newly opened Pasadena location. What's more appealing about this location is that they have a parking lot and ample street parking. We waited outside for around 40 minutes or so as the line snakes around the building. The line moves slowly because they only have one register to take orders (I also suspect that they keep the line long to build hype for people passing by). On the plus side, they do provide umbrellas for people waiting outside to protect from sun/rain which was honestly a really nice touch. Their menu is pretty small and straightforward so it shouldn't take long to order, but the cashier tries to socialize with you to buy time for tables to open up. My wife ordered the Mario fries (not on the menu but commonly ordered) while I had a sando (both were medium spice just to be safe). For dining in, you can choose their patio out back (handful of tables) or eat inside (handful of booths and 4 tables narrowly crammed together in the corner). It was hot so we ate inside, but there are fans both inside and outside so you're covered either way. The food didn't take long to be prepared and they have everything you need on the counter to help yourself (utensils, napkins, ketchup, hot sauce, complimentary merch like pins and stickers). Ranch costs extra fyi. Sorry Gen Z but the food just isn't that good. We didn't feel a thing with the medium spice. My better half even doused her chicken with hot sauce but still felt nothing. Even if we got a hotter spice level, they use way too much seasoning and salt for our tastes. Then again, like everything else here, that's probably by design to get you to drink beer (which they do serve). There's a real frat-bro energy throughout the restaurant with all the employees fist bumping everyone like it's a company mandate (the sole female employee looked completely over it). I don't know, call me old-fashioned but if you're handling my food, I really don't want you to serve it with the germs of all the gross customers you previously touched. They also try to have a party atmosphere by blasting music (Millennials will dig it while Gen Z will be busy looking up what's playing). There are also disco balls in the restrooms for dumb club effect. Howlin' Rays is nowhere near the best Nashville/hot chicken place - it doesn't even rank in our top spots in California. The tryhard dude-bros and salty ass food will keep us from giving them another shot. I guess if you're young/drunk you won't mind the cringe vibes and heartburn. I was pumped when they had their ghost kitchen because it was really quick and easy to get there since I lived so close. I would go there fairly often. This was my first time visiting this location on Arroyo Parkway. I'm very glad they also started testing out the Postmates delivery part of things. I had decided to get here right before they opened so I could be in line to order food and not have to worry about wasting too much time in line. I had come here on a Saturday so they had their chicken and waffles, which is also really amazing that I never tried previously. The team that works here are very friendly and it's always amazing and they make it an experience for us guests. My go to orders are the wings here and also the Mario fries. It's not explicitly on the menu, but it was some thing that they always had on the mobile order so I had asked for those specifically. They're essentially the fries loaded with the slaw, pickles, sauce, and chicken. It was really cool to meet Mario himself. The namesake of the fries! Inside has a really clean decor. There are a couple of seats in the back patio area if you want to dine outside a couple of booths and chairs inside. There was actually plenty of parking here in the lot more so than I had expected but I'm sure it fills up fairly quickly and it can't fit all the guests waiting in line. I parked right on Arroyo since I had seen street parking. Some other guests decided to park right by the fire hydrant which I felt like was all a bit risky, but I don't think any happened to them. Be sure to follow their Instagram so you can get updates on their wait times. Generally the Pasadena location has a longer wait time than Chinatown. We were the #13 ticket. I suggest coming early to avoid the long wait. I usually get The Sando with either medium or hot spice level, depending on the mood. My hubby gets the quarter or half bird with X-hot spice since he can handle spicy food. He said he loved the flavor of the X-hot spice more. The hot to me is really spicy already. If you can't handle spice, mild or medium is the way to go. And always get or ask for their comeback sauce! Plus, their fries are delicious for the size dish or the slaw. I really dislike chicken -- it makes me gag. But their chicken doesn't have a rubbery smell or taste. It's just good. Their chicken and waffles is only served on Sunday and man it is so good. That fluffy waffle, lightly dusted with sugar, spread with soft butter, and drenched in maple syrup is so good on its own. Add a savory, spicy chicken tender on top and man it's a mouthgasm. Don't pass on shaken fries. I highly recommend it. They're the thick crinkle cut fries seasoned with some Cajun spices to perfection. And if I wasn't gorging enough, I had to also get the batter box. That fluffy toast, pickles and crispy chicken is so good. Get a side order of their comeback sauce and you're all set. This was my first time queuing in line for their chicken. The wait on a Sunday early afternoon wasn't too bad, about 30 minutes. It could also be that it was freezing cold and drizzling that attributed to the short line. The food I ordered was chicken strips with waffles and french fries and everything was delicious. I loved the portions they were big and worth the price. I also had their IPA beer that was on tap and that was amazing. And the staff was extremely polite and cheerful, and the atmosphere was just completely enjoyable. We grabbed a high top on their outdoor patio that's well shaded and had a nice breeze. Pleasant surrounding, it doesn't feel like you're as close to parking as you are. As soon as I sat down, Javier came to clean the table and introduce himself, welcoming us to HR. We were later greeted by two more members, namely Alison who checked in to see if everything was solid and it absolutely was! Super friendly staff here in Pasadena! Fried pickles (off-menu!)- awesome batter, served hot and perfectly crisp. Huge serving! Macaroni salad- a really good compliment to balance the sandwich Mild sando - even at mild, delivering some solid heat but is cooled with the awesome slaw. Shake fries - perfect amount of season and crisp Honey mustard - tasty & tangy.
