First, after reading these yelp reviews and eating there, I would imagine that the good people of Howell's wouldn't give a flying rat's ass about any 'lo Yelp review. They aren't worried about the tourist trade or through travelers. Nope; this place is solely for the car and truck loads of regulars. I am a greasy-spoon connoisseur and this place is a little too much for me. Yes; it's dirty. Yes; the staff appear to be a tightly knit group. Yes; there are piles of local conversation. Yes; the food is plentiful and greasy. All the classic characteristics of a fine greasy spoon establishment are present in abundance. But, it's a little too dirty, a little too tight knit, and a little too greasy. The place opened in 1957 and could use a spring cleaning and a decor update, except for the fact that their customer base would throw a fit. It would be like trying to throw out your grandfather's favorite pair of work pants; he'd whoop your ass for tryin'. The customer uniform, t-shirts or sweat shirts with the males topped by oil stained ball caps supporting $4 sunglasses on the cap's bills in a kind of a cowboy tiara sorta way, suggests some quite exclusionary policy that the casual passerby would never know they were denied admittance. The locals just don't see the others around them. However, it all comes down to the fries. They are the kind of fries some people love. Not me; I greatly prefer crispy fries. These were limp and soggy potatoes sticks. The hamburger was massive and dragged through the garden. But, for me, the fries will keep me from seeking clan initiation. read more

We stopped in for breakfast because it's always got a lot of cars. First off, I need to stop using that as a barometer. It is never accurate. Look at an Applebee's parking lot, it's always packed too, but that doesn't mean I'd eat there. The biggest problem with this place is that it's not clean. There's stuff on the floor and the harried waitresses don't stop to clear things fast enough or take a rag to a table when it's needed. I ordered some eggs and a pancake and my husband had something else, and the food was lackluster at best. I couldn't get over the uncleanliness of the place; I just can't enjoy my food when I am wondering the entire time about the kitchen in which it was cooked. Won't be back. read more

Like another reviewer pointed out... most of the negative reviews are for the decor and age of the building. Get over that people! The food is good, the service is great and the pie... oh man, homemade deliciousness! I had the smothered steak, mashed potatoes and fried okra. All of it was terrific. Mashed potatoes were homemade, the brown gravy was not too salty like many cafe places are. The pie... I had lemon icebox and while it wasn't my grandma's, it was really good. If I had a complaint it would be a bit more filling in the pie. If you are ever in the area, I'd recommend you stop in and at the very least try a slice of pie. read more

It's great food at an old time cafe. There's usually not a wait and the waitresses are fast and friendly. They serve a full menu all day and it's all good to great. I stop here often on my hunting travels and it's a great warm up on cold winter mornings. read more

I've never been disappointed by Howell's. VERY good food and friendly staff. Their Jalapeno Burger is amazing and it's a huge half pounder. I grew up in the 70's eating in corner diners...this is why I love Howell's. It's a typical greasy spoon. From the time you pull in you'll know you're in Texas of yesteryear. Its old. Inside and out. That's the charm.This is a place where many of the local working class people come to jaw about that new tractor, or recent barn fire, or working a field. Lots of truckers, oil field vehicles, and beater pickups. You won't get stared at as you walk into the place like some other local hangouts I've been in, you always feel welcome here. Old tables, old signs on the walls. Have I mentioned everything about Howell's is old? This is a nice breakfast place as long as you don't need Splenda or Nutrasweet. Sweet N Low is all you get! Went for Breakfast, first the good, the food was okay. Now the bad, after you wade through the cigarette butts at the entrance and squeeze past people paying in the three foot entrance way you enter a very old and dirty café, then I had to ask a server for some service after five minutes. Leaving you have to walk pass people standing around the outside entrance smoking. NEVER AGAIN!!!! read more

Several years ago I would have given 5 stars but omg has this place become a dump. Portions smaller than McDonald's and so much nastier. Waitress flat out sucked and would not make eye contact with her 2 tables but spent 6 full minutes applying lipgloss consistently and yes I set my timer on phone. Extremely rude to people with disabilities who have a service dog who is clearly resisted and needed and gas identification. Took leftovers to give the dog later and the dog wouldn't even touch the eggs or bacon. read more

Howell's Western Cafe, was fantastic. When we hit the door our waitress was on the spot. We found ourselves a booth and she was right there to ask for our drink order. My mom and dad, my husband and I recently moved into the area. We looked for a decent place for breakfast and lunch that would not bankrupt us. We are country folks, and while I have lived all over the US, my mom, dad and husband have stayed mostly in Texas. We like good food, good sized portions and reasonable prices. We found it at Howell's. It has very good food for the price! If you are from NY or CA, you won't like it! Of course NY has now made it illegal to sell food that the STATE doesn't think is good for you - but I digress :) Howell's has a "down home" southern menu, with cooking at least as good (maybe better) than your mom's. They use fresh ingredients and actually MAKE most of their dishes from scratch - something that 90% of restaurants no longer do. Their cooks turn out very tasty food. I do not call them "chefs" because what they serve is REAL food. If you don't appreciate a waitress who remembers your face and smiles a "welcome back" then go elsewhere. And yes, they will likely call you "honey", however if you prefer "jerk" I'm sure they would accommodate you.The waitresses are pleasant, even when in a hurry and my family and I truly appreciate having found such a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere in which to enjoy good cooking of comfort food at very reasonable prices. Is the place "dated" interior and decor? Absolutely! However, it is NOT dirty as one reviewer suggested. There is a difference between old and dirty. There is nothing wrong with old (we will ALL be there one day if we are lucky!) and Howell's seems to work hard at keeping the place clean. Being new to this area, I did not know the original owners, but I've met their daughter and her husband who now run it and they are as friendly and eager to have your business as any. They spend time in the dining area greeting customers and asking how everything is. Bottom line, it is not a fancy NY restaurant. It is a home style, family cafe with good food, friendly service showing southern hospitality at it's best. read more

It has been a few months ago when we went to this place, but wanted to relate our experience. We ordered take out and when we got home and opened packaging, found insects in both bag AND on the food! When we returned the food for a refund, they were neither apologetic nor surprised. Should have expected something like that because is place appears to be just nasty. Absolutely the worse place we've ever been. The coffe was full of dregs, and cold, they didn't offer cream, only skim milk and some plastic vanilla cup crap. We've stopped at this old time café several times on our way home from camping in our RV at various sites nearby. Both times we were very happy with our breakfast. The last visit our grandson got a cheese burger instead of breakfast and this slowed our food down considerably. His burger looked fantastic and he loved it. My food could have been warmer but it may have been cooked then held up when they made his burger, they did tell us it would take longer for a burger. I don't understand this but I'm not cooking so don't know their arrangement in the kitchen. Warning don't sit anywhere near the kitchen the heat coming out of it is stifling we moved to another table because of it. You also pass right by the heat of the kitchen going to the restrooms. Wow unbelievable. This does not effect the food what so ever just thought it was worth mentioning. The restaurant was very crowded at the time we were there, but no wait. This restaurant has been around for over 50 years and you can tell by looking at it....needs some updating.... parking lot is gravel and some concrete but works..... restaurant outside just needs a good cleaning around the whole building... inside...getting in is difficult.... your first impression as you first walk in... there's a reader board that post items for sale, services etc..... just looks unorganized and not tidy.... moving forward to the dining room.... you are trying to find a seat as guest are trying to check out, be seated and there's a game that causes people to stop and pay...all in about a 4 ft area...... tables, chairs.... even the dishes are dated! Needs a deep..deep cleaning appears to be very unclean .... waitresses even look tired and untidy...... most food arrives to your table Luke warm or cold..... especially the bacon.....so cold you can see the grease has garden on the bacon!!!!I love little country cafe but the only reason this place is still in business is because the lack of breakfast competitors..... read more

This place is a disgrace!!!! My family and i came here to eat and my step mom and my childs food was so bad neither of them could eat! My step moms food was undercooked and my childs pancakes were made with something that was defiantly not pancake mix, They were flat, hard and tasted just plain bad. My child left hungry and we had to go somewhere else to get her food! The waitress said the manager would talk to us about it and she never did!!! We went to pay and they charged us for all the food even the food they took back to the kitchen and was never eaten! I asked why we were being charged since they took it back and never replaced it and the lady had an attitude and said it was because we ordered it and it wasn't uncommon for people to not like the food they cook!! I was so distraught at this point because i had never seen a restaurant treat people so bad in my life!! So then i told her i didnt think she cared about her customers and she said no she didnt right in front of tons of people! She never appoligized about the food and i am very upset! Well Howell's has been here since 1962 and the first time I had one of their famous huge ckn fried steak was 1983 seems like it was about 12 to 13 inches across and was great. Today it is a bit smaller about 8 to 10 inches across and just as tasty and tender, you get two sides with the meals all tasted and were just plain ole good comfort food. One Saturday I drove by and at 1145am there was literally no space to park up and down hwy 199, so I went on my way as I had business to do. pies are soooooooogoooood and cakes toooooooo. Be patient as when they are busy it takes time, but worth waiting for. I think U can not get a bad meal there and if so tell em so they can fix it, they are more than willing to. read more

Looks it's age.. In need of a cleaning.. As we were eating my husband was pointing out the webs on the ceiling. The last two times we ate there it wasn't good..
