Howard's feels less like a restaurant and more like walking into your grandmother's kitchen on a Sunday morning--if your grandmother happened to be feeding half the town. The place is always buzzing, and it's immediately obvious that many of the customers are regulars. There are no menus here. Instead, the waitress hands you a notepad and tells you to write down whatever you want. Not sure what to order? Wanda was happy to point us toward favorites like the blueberry pancakes and corned beef hash. The whole experience is refreshingly simple and surprisingly charming. Speaking of Wanda, she treated everyone like old friends stopping by for breakfast. Another employee wandered through the dining room chatting with customers and checking on folks like she had known them for years. Whether she actually knew everyone or just made it feel that way remains one of Howard's great mysteries. We ordered a mix of blueberry pancakes, eggs, bacon, and biscuits and gravy. Everything was delicious, but the blueberry pancakes stole the show. The biscuits and gravy arrived on a plate that appeared to have surrendered completely to the gravy. If you leave hungry, that's probably a personal choice. One of the most entertaining parts of the experience is the honor system. Since you write down your own order, you'd better remember what you asked for when the food arrives and again when it's time to pay. No cheating. The open kitchen lets you watch the cooks at work, and the entire place feels like a gathering spot as much as a restaurant. The downside is that it gets crowded. You may have to wait for a table, and sharing a table with strangers isn't out of the question. If you're looking for white tablecloths, printed menus, and a polished dining experience, keep driving. If you're looking for good food, friendly people, local gossip, and a breakfast experience that feels like a community event, Howard's is exactly where you want to be. If you are like me and struggle to know what you want until you see choices on a menu, this may not be the right place for you. It is a nice concept, you seat yourself and order anything you want. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures today. I went here for a quick breakfast when I was in the Moncks Corner area. This was one of the most unique restaurants I've ever been to, in a good way! If you've never been here before, the first time you go there's a very good chance you'll be required to do a chicken dance as you enter. The fun starts there lol. There are no menus and only cash is accepted. Food is good. Place seemed fairly clean although the floor was a little sticky in some places and there were a few Flys around. What a fun and great place to eat. We were visiting from out of town and so glad we found this little place. We were welcomed as we entered... and of course, I did the requested Chicken Dance!! Absolutely love this place. The server is so funny. This is our third time visiting and we always enjoy the food and service. She does trivia with the guest. This time she asked us to name four colleges with a color in their name. When we walked in she told me to write my order down. The cook came and got the order, but they were out of country ham so she had to come back and change my husband's order. The food came quickly and everyone is welcoming and friendly. Great Food, Super low prices, and Nostalgic decor! The quintessential "OLD GREASY SPOON", the food was quick, greatly seasoned, well cooked. Chalk boards and posters advertised the daily specials and favorites ordered by regulars. Our waitress was friendly, informative, approachable, and entertaining. She read us the Menu in the form of a Poem. SO darn cute. So don't ask for a menu, there isn't one. The restaurant was decorated with lots of nostalgic memorabilia hanging on the walls. Pictures of Old time movie stars and entertainers. You felt like you've traveled back in time. It was definitely like eating breakfast at Grandma's house. No fuss, No frills but sure tasted good. First things first, the food was alright, nice and simple. What I didn't like was the atmosphere and the amount of attention paid to me. I don't mean in like "need a refill?" or "can I get you anything else?" because that actually never happened. What did happen was one of the staff coming to sit with me to show me their X-rays and surgery scars AFTER I'd gotten my food and started eating, so I was stuck. All I wanted was a quiet breakfast and to enjoy the ambiance. I don't think that's really hard ask. I love a diner, always have. Jack Reacher have that in common, at least. Anyway, when I was a kid, I had an uncle in Greenville that drove big rigs across the country for Monsanto. If he got wind somebody was going somewhere, he made sure they knew which truck stops had the best food and friendliest (and prettiest) waitresses, and also which ones had lot lizard problems (when I was a kid I thought he meant lizards, like chameleons and such). So anyway, truck stops, boat landings, mom and pops, Waffle/Huddle House, Pappys, I love them all. That is why I have mixed feelings about Howards. I can say this after 3 visits, and I really like the folks who work there and eat there, but, and here's the thing: good food goes a long way with me. I'll overlook slow service, sticky tables, even dirty utensils, but Howards doesn't feel quaint and quirky, it just feels shabby and old, and not in a good way. My wife went once, never again. There is an abundance of what one of my old chiefs called "old dirt" that seems to be sealed in by decades of fallen grease vapor. If they closed for a week and did a deep, deep cleaning, I might go back. I would love another one of Howards western omelettes, but just can't do it when there are two Waffle Houses and a Huddle House nearby. read more

First timers today and what an experience! We didn't know we were going to enjoy the food as much as the experience! Wanda (the owner) greeted us at the door. Welcomed us and had us sit wherever we wanted. Told us there were no menus and did a speech of what was offered. She gave us a pen and order pad to write down our own order. We soon realized the locals/regulars were walking in and helping themselves to drinks and as they sat down their food was being served without ordering. She knew her customers and what they wanted. We enjoyed our food as it was delicious and cooked just right! However, I think we enjoyed the experience and atmosphere just as much! This is the "at home" vibe of a small town restaurant I've been looking for here! It was definitely an old town at home vibe and we loved it! We plan on going back every Tuesday for lunch or dinner! This is definitely a mom and pop type of place. My Mom could eat breakfast for every meal of the day so we stopped in to try Howard's. My Mom is a pretty unadventurous eater so breakfast is always pretty easy. Right as we sat down a woman came over to give us her "spiel". She's done this a million times and has a pointing stick and everything. She starts out by saying they have menus but don't like to use 'em. Then you get the rundown of who they are and what they do. I was afraid my Mom might not take well to this approach but she played along and was able to get exactly what she wanted. I had a corn beef hash omelet and it was pretty good. The omelet was huge but I wish they listened when I told them I wanted my homefries well done. The whole schtick is a little over the top but we had a good meal and they're genuine old school folks in here.
