As a veg head for many years and coming down south, I am always So sad to not eat the wonderful smelling bbq that is available because it is meat - until I found this all vegan truck in Houston. HFS was it good!!! I mean like I want to lick the box good. I got one meal and then order something different because when you find something this good, you need to try more stuff especially if you are not from around here. The menu is all plant based and so flavorful. The smell made be drool. The staff was friendly and the food came fast and hot. Everything had the perfect amount of heat and flavor. When in Texas what do you want to eat? BBQ! Being that I'm plant based I knew I would be having a hard time finding BBQ that I could eat but I decided to hope & pray for a miracle. I went on Yelp & Houston Sauce Pit got rave reviews and after looking at the menu I was excited to give it a try. They are located off of Almeda on the side of the street next to Turkey Hut. There was a long line when I got there but luckily enough I had already ordered online and avoided the wait. I ordered the the chopped beet sandwich, smoked wangs with Mac n cheese and potato salad. The sandwich was pretty good and had good texture. The potato salad was weird mushy to the point of mashed potatoes which is a weird consistency for potato salad. This is a staple for Houston vegan food. The way they smoked their "meat" is perfection. I would recommend parking on the street as they try to charge you for parking in the lot. One of the BEST vegan food trucks I have ever had. Their mac n cheese is amazing and not like any other vegan one I have had. Their burgers are also so filling and flavorful with their special sauce - I dream of it all the time. I really want to come back to try their wings and nachos. I attempted to wait in a long line on a Sunday afternoon. There wasn't much street parking around and I had to park in a spot in the neighbourhood where they required permits at 5pm. After a 45 minute wait and view of the debauchery that was going on at nearby bars, I had to leave the line to tend to my car. I came back on a Wednesday afternoon where there was a line of 4 people. It's expensive here, but BBQ in Houston has gotten expensive in general along with the vegan surcharge. The special, the swamped burrito was $21! They were out of many items so I ended up with the links plate with brussel sprouts and mac & 'cheese'. I took the plate back to the comfort of my own home and unlimited refills of water. Believe me, you'll need the water because the amount of salt you ingest with processed "meat" is enormous. The links had a nice peppery taste and didn't taste too salty. The mac and cheese had a strong garlic taste that compensated for the missing richness due to the lack of actual cheese. The brussel sprouts was the main culprit in terms of salt, being too salty and also too sweet. Not something I want to repeat again. My meal was good, but I had to keep drinking water afterwards for hours. The food was not something I would wait in line for though. read more

I am so grateful for the growing list of vegan eats in Houston - from more restaurants offering options on their menus to full on vegan-only restaurants. Like I keep telling my friends: IT'S ALL HAPPENING. So when I heard about a vegan barbecue stand in the third ward, I made it a mission to check it out. The two first attempts were fails - they were either sold out + they are closed on Mondays - but finally, third time was a charm. Their menu is 100% vegan - they have "wangs," chopped 'meat' sandwiches and barbecue plates along with sides, like mac, brussels sprouts and baked beans. I haven't had barbecue in a few years, so this was such a delicious reunion with barbecue - but CRUELTY FREE. Wahoo. Extra delicious. My favorite was the 'veef' sandwich with all the fixins. The texture of the "meat" paired with their sauce - which they bottle and sell - was perfection. I also was a fan of their baked beans. It tasted just like traditional baked beans, but again, no animal products. Oh how I've missed southern baked beans. We also got the loaded mac topped with links and veef, along with the elote, which happened to be on special that day at $2.50 a cob. On this particular day, they didn't have utensils (not sure if that's the usual), so we took our food to-go; but there were some people eating their barbecue sandwiches along the street that offers some shade. OMG, this place was amazing! I've been wanting to try them for a LONG time but I didn't want to stand in line on Almeda Rd. They were at the Power Center Food Court on S. Post Oak and this was my chance. Taste- The sandwich meal was so very delicious. For real, you will forget it isn't meat. The corn was bland but the sauce on it was finger licking good. Price- fair price for the meal ($12) in that it was filling with the sandwich and 2 sides, but the corn ($7) is way overpriced. It was small and just not worth the cost. I finally made it to this known establishment, to check out their Menu of 100% Vegan Options. I started with the Flame Broiler Burger with Cheese, BBQ Sauce, Onions, and Pickles. All 100% Vegan. In addition, I ordered their Wangs Plate, along with fries. In my haste to take a bite, I proceeded to my vehicle. First of all... The Burger was hearty in portion. But moreover, I have NEVER tasted a Vegan Burger as GOOD as this one. There was no putrid after taste. Extremely perfectly seasoned. oh, wow. This shit's goooood! And their setup is real cute with some comfy wrought-iron chairs to wait in, a standing cocktail table to eat at, and a picnic table or two with plants around. Now, for the food: I got the chopped veef sandwich with potato salad, baked beans and mac & cheese on the side (it was too much food, but I wanted to try a lot of things - yay leftovers!). My only complaint, and it is a big deal to me, is there were no where near enough pickles and onions on the sandwich. I want that crispness and tart to contrast the sweet, smoky bbq, so it was truly missing. Here, what Houston Sauce Pit did is brilliant: they didn't worry about texture as much as flavor. The flavor is AMAZING! A lil (just a teeny bit) smoky and definitely a cheesy flavor profile. The texture was kinda like eating butter noodles or saucy noodles, but not quite mac & cheese, and it was the better for it. There were delicious spices in it (it wasn't spicy though!).They rocked it!!! :D The baked beans were great! The potato salad was not my jam. It had some chunks of potato, but mostly the binding/creamy bit made up the salad. Not sure if it was pureed potato or something else, but I wanted more potato. As a personal preference, I like a lil dill pickle in my potato salad, but I understand not everyone does, so this also wasn't my favorite type of potato salad in general. Food took 10 min Service was A1 and he gave me an excellent recommendation I got a burger don't know which one but it was very delicious. I got Mac and beans for the sides. Being from Cleveland, OH and vegan for 20+ years, we had to hit a Vegan BBQ truck as it's just not available up north. Totally worth it. The food was so good and the wood smoker smelled amazing. I loved it. I loved the beans but the flavor was a little close to the main dish so I wish I would have tried the Brussels sprouts to get some different flavors. My wife and I liked it so much we ordered another plate to go. That was the loaded brisket with Mac and cheese and the corn elote. I just ate it for breakfast cold and it was just fantastic. This is some good food. I'm not vegan but i have family members that do not eat meat so we tried this place. The bbq had a good smoke flavor, the texture was spot on and it was delicious. There is a wait so in the texas heat you may want an umbrella. They did have water for the line (thanks!). My only con is the portion sizes are varied. I got the special trill nachos and it was a lot of food. But my niece got the link plate and i felt bad that she might still be hungry and her food cost the most. Her critique was she wished the mac was a little creamier but the flavor was good. Not sure how creamy you can make vegan mac though. I would say 4.5 stars but yelp won't let me be great.
