Went to get several large plants today and the young guy helped me pulled the tag off the palm I wanted and scanned it himself. Went to check out and he says the tag is wrong on the palm and it's several hundred more and there's was wrong. Then he tells me the Italian Cypress plants I hand picked and took out to the parking lot were tagged wrong as well and were over $100 more each. I show him a whole wall of them all tagged the same. He said they were all tagged wrong. And to top it off no one at the entire place spoke English or knew what was going on. What a terrible way to do business. Will never go back. read more

Its Monday at lunchtime. I brought my money tree to seek advice on how to revive. The associates here are not approachable and off putting. The man at the cash register seemed rushed. He was slightly rude to the customer in front of me, when there was no line. That May have already put a biased opinion on my review bc of how I saw him treat others. I asked my question and he asked "did you google it?".... Really??? He's like "I don't know what you're doing with your plant, you're the one who planted it, idk your solid watering habits... but maybe the asst manager that's here might be able to help but he's new, and the manager isn't here." I was honest with him and told him thanks for his short time, I was seeking useful advice not criticism and guessing. Quick trip here to get some spring flowers for my container. They have some lovely varieties of perennials for an okay price. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive. I wish they had more houseplants to choose from but I only saw a lot of a few; Boston ferns, pathos, palms, etc. Everything is nicely organized and clean and the employees all wore masks. read more

HGC is fraudulent and are real life Grinches! I will NEVER spend another cent there and you shouldn't either! I took down my Christmas tree a week early this year because I was afraid of it catching fire. I have had a fresh tree in my house all of my adult years and my mother had one all of hers. We have never had a tree die so suddenly. I water, feed, and trim accordingly. I saw other posts this year about how trees at HGC were dying within a few days of purchase. They argued that it was from heater use. I call BS!! Now that I've taken my tree down, I can most definitely see that this tree has been sprayed with something to make it look as if it is living. Additionally, when pine needles fall off of the tree, they turn brown--ours are still bright green--EVERY SINGLE ONE!! It should be illegal for businesses to take advantage of people this way. Do not buy Azalea s there. Spent almost $200 for some well established azaleas and every one was root bound beyind belief. I patiently soaked and tried to separate and coukd not. Rock solid. I finally had to cut into the root system (per online gardening site advice) to try to free at least some of the bottom so it can grow. All are dying and I am out $200. Save yoir money and Go to home depot. They have a 1 yr money back warranty on all their plants. I will NEVER shop HGC again. Too many plants have been root bound or unable to sirvive transplant. Plant are liberally coated with insecticide - bad for pollinators and certainly shouldn't be on butterfly host plants. Selection is limited and not healthy. Marked prices aren't what are often charged at the register. read more

I have purchased a Christmas trees and other plants from Houston Garden Center for the past 5 years and have always received great quality product. On, Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23, 2017) my family and I purchased Christmas tree (Black Spruce w/Pine Cones) at the Cinco Ranch/Katy location. At first sight the tree was perfect and appeared to be very healthy and exactly what we were looking for. We purchased the new bottle of Keep-it-green Christmas tree preservative, fresh cut, and pan for the tree totaling $112.55. The tree was taking in normal amounts of water and the pan had to be refilled on the regular basis. Despite the proper tree care after about a week and a half the tree began to lose an excessive amount needles. So much to the point the lower half of the tree is completely bare by week two. I would come home and find broken ornaments on the floor due the tree not able to hold the weight of the ornaments because of the excessive needle dropping. The stems at the top of the tree were somewhat viable as I replenished the water about once a week but the lower stems were bare. Throughout the day you would constantly hear needles dropping onto the tree skirt and wood floors. The tree also appeared to have been painted or sprayed with a blue green substances of some sort, at the time I assumed it was an herbicide/ fungicide. After carefully inspecting the tree I notice the tree was displaying traits disease/fungus. I work as an Agriculture Specialist my key role is to identify and prevent the spread of harmful plant and animal pest/ disease to America's agriculture. It's clear I am able to identify something was truly wrong with this tree!!! After research and input from coworkers we came to realize the tree strongly displayed similar traits of a fungal disease. Last night (12/13/17) the tree had lost so many needles it became unsafe to keep in our home and we had to throw the tree out for garage. We have never experienced anything like this with previous Christmas Trees from the Houston Garden Center. On, December 14, 2017 I contacted The Houston Garden Center Corporate Office ( 281) 218-0860 to file a complaint regarding a Christmas I purchased on Thanksgiving Day. A woman answered the phone I attempted to explain the reason of the call and immediately place me on hold for around five minutes. I hung up and dailed again I was then immediately placed back on hold for an additional five minutes. Which after what seemed like a lifetime on hold a lady by the name of Cindy finally came to the phone. I explained to Cindy in detailed the issue regarding the tree. But to my surprise instead of showing concern Cindy became defensive and aggressive towards me yelling on several occasions "our trees are not diseased"!!!! Yet, never offered and explanation to why the tree would be dead after three weeks. However, Cindy did request a copy of my proof of purchase and photo of the tree. Several hours later I reached back out to Cindy of course I place on hold for an extended amount of time. However, I wanted to ensure she received the photos. Cindy's tone was very dismissive and her responses were short at this point I knew the issue would not be resolved. This was truly an unpleasant experience for my family!! read more

I am handicapped and it's hard for me to visit the Houston Garden Centers because they are not set up for wheelchairs. However, when I do need Plants I enjoy buying them from HGC. My one complaint is that they NEVER answer their phones. I've called every location near me and I always get a message saying their mailbox is full, or they simply just don't answer the phones. I'd like to be able to call and check that they have what I'm looking for before going there, getting my chair out and trying to get in there just to find out they are out or don't carry what I need. I just moved from Raleigh N.C. to Houston. Needed supplies and herb plants for an indoor window in my kitchen. I arrived at the location in Tomball, Tx and asked an employee where I could find the herbs. Outside was his reply and then he walked away. I then went inside and asked if someone could help me find the things I needed and answer some questions about the plants I wanted. I was told and I quote "we don`t do that here." Well guess what, I don`t spend my money at places where they don`t do that here. They could offer me free inventory and I still wouldn`t go there again. I drove 2 miles further to a different garden supply store. Got great service and spent over $500.00 on plants shrubs and other supplies for my new home. Tried to get someone to assist me in selecting a couple trees and then get them to my truck, but got help with neither. When I asked what kind of soil they recommended to purchase to go around my trees, they responded, "We don't really make a recommendation." To which I replied, "You're a nursery. You can't make a recommendation about what soil is best?" Overall, employees were disengaged and uncaring. They offered little to no help and made it obvious I was a burden to them. This is by far the worst place!!! Customer service, Manager doesn't do anything to help, just sits and looks at you then he walks away. Then the cashier Melissa is horrible, Rude doesn't want to help you when you ask for an item and then she's yelling at employees when they tried to help me. One cashier helped me after he saw I needed help slim African American Young man and she yells at him to open register that I will have to wait. This is the Wall-Mart of garden centers, cheap and a solid selection of plants, but you couldn't get service here waving handfuls of free money.. I've been to nicer and more helpful nurseries around town, but this place is most often the cheapest.. I can only recommend HGC for people who know exactly what they want and feel confident they can carry and load the plants to their vehicle by themselves.. If you're planing on just strolling through a nursery to get some ideas and might have a few questions about the plants forget about going here, you'll be lucky if the employee working the register can even speak English, much less the employees on the floor.. Also they do not accept Amex and they do not accept any return under any circumstances.. If you happen to buy one too many flats of a certain plant and happen to realize it the second you swipe your credit card, too bad.. Really when I think about it I'm not sure why I'm not giving HGC one star, I guess a good location and price will keep them at two for now.. read more

I already took my 2020 Christmas "tree" down and it is in the garage waiting for tree recycling day. In reality, the top half of the tree kept its needles, but the bottom half became needle-less. I bought it one week ago from Houston Garden Center. It looked perfect under their tent. Once home, each day needles rained down and ornaments fell off and crashed onto the floor. On a positive note, two gentlemen helped me put the tree in my car. They were great. My pile of twigs and needles are far from great. read more

Unfortunately having shopped at 5 of these locations, the customer service has never been anything but consistent disregard for the customer. The owner and management are oblivious to their largest asset, their employees. It appears that the majority of the employees are coming across the border and have poor English and little training. Quality of plants and selection are poor but not fair to compare these folks to Enchanted Gardens. Convenience has drawn me in, parking ever so tight. Will not return. read more

Visited HGC for the first time and picked a plant to purchase. Price at the register different from the marked/advertised price. They refused to give me the plant at the marked price. HomeDepot or Lows is a much better place to shop for plants anyway. Employees are not very helpful and don't seem very happy to be working there. I won't be going back to HGC. read more

If I could give lower than one star, I would. Customer service sucks at the store on the Katy freeway and Westgreen. We found a hangng basket that we liked, and it was the only one. The basket was busted and the plant was falling out but we were willing to by it at a discount and repot it but not at full price. They weren't going to come off the price so we didn't buy it. I guess they would rather throw it away later. Then when we got ready to pay, I had a coupon in my phone. Nope, you can't use that either, just paper ones. They had the ad on the counter, with the coupon but they had written VOID on it. Why was the coupon available on the phone if you can't use it. Other stores will scan their coupons at the counter. The best $13 i ever spent! I purchased a defective sprinkler and they refused to replace or refund. I understand that policy in reference to plants, but not a non-living piece of hardware. As a newcomer to the area leading a property and neighborhood revitalization, I thought this was the place to shop! Now that they demonstrated their management (owners) attitude, I and my neighbors looked deeper that just this one incident to see that they have an F rating with the BBB and even deeper, if even half of the employees reviews are accurate, why would anyone want to support that kind of business. That $13 cost them thousands just on my own personal project in its infancy and yes, I tell everyone! Thanks for showing you true reputation. Bought our Christmas Tree on Thanksgiving Day and after a week we noticed that all the needles were starting to turn brittle or come off. We even bought the Christmas Tree preservative to make sure it will last till after the holidays, but it did not help. Looks like this is a common problem for those who bought this year since I've seen other customer complaints in the local news. We buy live trees every year so we know how to maintain and keep it longer. This is our first year buying our tree from this store and we're very disappointed with our purchase. HGC is a sweat shop, literally. They do not hire anyone for their knowledge of plants, just the willingness to work in poor conditions for low pay. I understand that OSHA had to force them to provide water for employees. One 30 minute break allowed but no break room. If the employees are not helpful, this is why. Sad! read more

I bought a full pallet of st augustine sod (160 pieces of sod). It was dead within 18 days due to fungus that it had when I bought. "All sales are final" is what I was told when I called customer service. They weren't even apologetic for selling me bad grass. Will never purchase anything from this company again. read more

Shop at your own risk: As others have pointed out, customer service is horrible. I've had to honk my horn to find someone to load mulch in my trunk after waiting 10 minutes, have been shorted a bag of mulch, have had them load the wrong bags in my trunk 3 TIMES in one day, and most recently had them break a seat release in my trunk. Sometimes the plants are mis-marked or not marked at all. None of the workers can answer any of my questions about the plants. If you happen to ask if a plant is on sale at the register you are often interrupted and rudely told by one particular worker in a very loud voice that the sale doesn't apply to that plant (which is fine, but please be polite about it!). It's almost like being scolded for asking. I have had some positive experiences with some of the workers, but with this last incident of 3 trips to the store resulting in damage to my trunk because the man was irritated to see me again (and consequently was angrily shoving mulch bags into my trunk), I can't give anything more than 2 stars, and that might be generous. read more

This particular store showed my husband the worst and most rude service we have encountered at a HGC. My husband and I both know that they are not a full service garden center and by that I mean helping you pick up plants to load into your cart or car. However, my husband had to get 4 very large trees and was not able to handle all of them at once. One of the workers (who was for some reason just sitting there) watched him struggle the entire time never trying to help. My husband nicely asked if he could get a quick hand and the guy replied "that's not my job." How rude is that??? It may not be in your job description, but you seriously aren't kind enough to just help someone out for a minute? My husband even asked the manager if there was someone who could help out and he said "I can't make anyone here help you." I really hope that some sweet little old woman doesn't need any help one day, because there attitude is a "screw you, do it yourself" type. Very rude! They sold me the wrong plants when I went back to tell him about it manager said there were do nothing about it. He said it was the customers fault if you bought the wrong plant. He refused to give me an exchange or my money back. I called the Corporate office and they informed me that this is their policy they do not do exchanges or returns .
