Something different, fun, graceful and not too expensive. What really sold it for me was that it's $60 for 2 people. If it had been for each I wouldn't have done it. All you have to do is go to their website, find a slot of time and email them. They're very responsive. Our trainer was incredible nice and knowledgeable. He taught us safety rules and how to shoot the arrow and corrected us so our aiming would hit the bullseye. The only way it could be better is if they had a bigger place. It was crowded in the beginning and towards the end. It distracted us and our teacher, plus you can only get your arrows back when everyone else is done shooting. So the more people the longer the wait. read more

If you're looking for something out-of-the-box, try your hand at a private lesson! This includes all equipment, 1 on 1 training with an instructor, and basically an hour of shooting. ($70 for 2 people) My mother and I signed up for lessons with Morgan, and he was totally awesome! Neither of us had any experience, and he was so patient and helpful. The booking process is pretty straightforward. Visit the website, check the schedule, then request an open time-block. You'll get an email confirming your lesson. You're required to pay in advance either via Paypal or by providing your cc info over the phone. They were also super accommodating after I had to change my appointment time last minute. The shooting area is a bit small, so it was sort of cramped for our lesson. Either way, we still had a great time! read more

I brought my 11 year old son by today for a last minute private lesson with Morgan. The web site makes it really easy to see what is available on the schedule, and James, the owner, was super responsive by email. I basically asked for a slot at 6 am, heard back by 9 am, paid by paypal at 2:30 pm and was in our lesson at 3 pm. Easy! The lessons are provided upstairs inside West Houston Archery. I have never been on an archery range, picked up a bow or shot a target ever so can't provide any comparative advice. But for a total newbie not knowing what to expect, I was really pleased with the facilities, attention and service. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming. Morgan was knowledgeable, engaging, and was able to give both me and my son feedback on our form. $60 felt like a really good value for service. You don't need any of your own equipment, as there are several sizes of bows available for a students. Fingers hurting a bit? No problem, there are pads for that. Bowstring rubbing your arm a bit? No problem, arm guards for that. All in all, we had a great experience, and my son is eager to start monthly lessons. It was a fun mom/son activity and I'm looking forward to sharing that with him here. read more

I received a gift certificate from my parents for archery lessons and was very much looking forward to it. I had a great lesson with Anna and signed up the next week for another. I received a phone call as I was pulling into the parking lot (3 minutes late due to traffic) and was told that although he confirmed my next lesson with Anna, he had neglected to tell her, so my lesson was off. He chuckled as he mentioned it must have slipped his mind and would i be available at 4. He quickly changed it to 5 because nobody was available at 4. No, I'm sorry I'm not available because I'm an adult with responsibilities and dont just sit around waiting for another archery lesson. I was very irritated as I had planned my whole day and other activities around this lesson, but agreed to do one the next day at the same time with her. I arrived for the next lesson and sat around for a couple minutes as I was told there was heavy traffic and Anna might be late sitting in that. A couple more minutes go by and one of the younger workers there called him only to find out that he apparently put me on the schedule for my lesson, but SOMEHOW it never updated in the computer. Which is weird, because Anna didnt know about the lesson either? So I'm going to go ahead and call BS on that too. He apologized again and offered to come in and give me a free lesson but at this point I'd rather not give this guy or his business any of my money. I hope he learns how to run this place like a legitimate business, and not a hobby because I'd hate to see great people like Anna and the young gentleman that helped me get cheated out of money because this guy has his head up his ass and cant run a business. My single star is aimed at the owners/management of the facility. Not the employees. read more

Writing this review is not easy, but necessary to let others know what to expect. I took a child of mine to a camp put on by this company. After we picked him up at the end of the first day, he was very happy. He'd had a good day and left the Range in good spirits, high-fiving the instructors. Later that day, I received an email from the proprietors of the Houston Archery Lessons. (As I came to find out, it is a husband and wife team). In the email, I was informed that my son had been fighting with another child and supposedly doing "trick shots". All of this information apparently came from the parent of the other child and was not observed by any of the staff. I called the front office to discuss the situation. The first call rang about 20 times before voicemail. I called back and this time the "wife" answered. I could hear a baby crying the background so my call was probably inconvenient. When I explained the situation, we discussed it for a few minutes. The woman told me about what the other parent had said. I asked why the instructors had not picked up the same behavior. There was no response to that. At that point, the woman told me that they have a "100% no questions asked refund policy". I asked if that meant she did not want my son to come back. She replied, "I didn't say that". After five rounds of that, I asked for my money back and she agreed. The next day, we received a nasty note from the "husband". It was a threatening, hostile, and deprecating email from him. Without recapping that, his 100% money back guarantee became a 66% money back guarantee. My experience with this firm has been very unsatisfactory. I'm not sure how a business can be so disrespectful to a customer and still get new business. Anyway, that's for them to decide. Just beware that this operation is a "mom and pop" shop and does not act with much professionalism. read more

Not sure what happened with CB and her son, but I went with my boyfriend to learn archery and had a blast! We booked a one hour teaching lesson (lessons are the same price for one or two people). We had a really sweet girl for an instructor who taught us the basics quickly, then had us shoot for most of the hour. She stood by our side and adjusted us both constantly. I feel like we learned a lot in just one hour! The equipment was very nice. Safety was not an issue at all - they take it seriously and have a system in place so nobody is walking to get their arrows when anyone else is shooting. If you are concerned about bringing a child to learn, don't be. There were four in there (7-14? Maybe) being taught and watched by instructors. The teachers watched them closely and were very helpful. You can come for lessons, or just to shoot and rent equipment. Pricing was very reasonable. I will return and have a great new hobby! read more

I love taking my group here because everyone leaves happy and eager to return! James and Susan are really easy to work with and very accommodating for groups! We just went last month and I'll share a feedback I received from one of my members. My group does a 1.5 hour intro class about once every quarter. "I have done this event several times and I still really enjoy it. James is a fantastic instructor and he and his staff are always very friendly. We had five boys attend a group lesson on a Saturday. The owner, James had confirmed in writing that we would have a one hour lesson followed by one hour of practice. We never got the practice. So hence the one star. The boys took the lesson, supervised by the instructor Hanson and five parents. Hanson and the lesson were great, and the boys were tired out. So I thought they'd maybe practice for 15 minutes or so before they wanted to leave. When I asked where the practice would be that James said would be after the lesson, Hanson said he didn't know. I asked the second staff member named Seth at the desk and he condescendingly told me that they don't provide practice time and that I should know this because I signed a contract (Which I didn't-James just booked my lesson by email). He then started to walk away, threw his arms in the air, and began a mini rant about how it was not possible that I had been told there would be a practice because it is against policy to do practices after a group lesson, that James shouldn't even have booked my group in the first place because he (Seth) was way too busy and didn't have enough instructors, that the kids were just beginners and it wasn't safe for them to practice, and that they were completely unsupervised. He said all this in front of the boys and the five supervising parents who were all staring at him by this point. It was all just very odd, and a little amusing. I just chalked it up to inexperience/youth/bad day and we left to go get pizza instead.... The next day I replied to the email from James letting him know that his staff didn't let us do a practice after the lesson. He replied that he knows he told me that it was only going to be if space was available (which he didn't- in fact the email trail clearly showed he didn't), and that Seth was concerned about safety because the boys would be unsupervised. This was even more odd because we were the only people in the place at the end of the lesson and had five experienced adults there with them. James still said he completely supported Seth's decision to not honor our agreement. Anyway, overall a disappointing experience. We chose this place because of the practice time and then it turned out to be a bait and switch. Another down side was that the teaching area was very small and did seem to be booked solid- with no separation between beginners and more experienced students. Which I imagine is annoying for more experienced students. The practice area downstairs looked to be good size and is free if you bring your own gear. The teaching area is upstairs from a seriously stocked professional archery store. I am sure that if you go during the week and have one or two people, it would be better. Just steer clear of Seth if he is having a stressful day. My advice- for groups- just go literally anywhere else. The beautiful thing about living in or near a big city is that there are so many choices out there. You don't need to waste a Saturday being ranted at by a teenager, and dealing with an owner that believes he can do no wrong. read more

I went to this range with my younger siblings both 6 and 9 and we had a blast. The instructor was very nice and offered us help when we needed it. He mostly taught us the basics in a few minutes and then he let us shoot for the rest of the time. They said we could stay longer and shoot plus the instructor helped my lil bro even though he wasn't being paid afterwords. They run a very serious business and safety is the number one thing with them. My whole family can't wait to go again read more
