I was first introduced to archery in 2019 on a farm in Oklahoma. Some friends who own a large plot of land were always "playing with their toys" on the property so to speak, and after a day of fishing and shooting rifles, I gave the crossbow a whirl. It was more fun than the rifles! There's something very bad ass about a crossbow or even a bow and arrow. I've since purchased my own crossbow and whenever I'm in the mood to shoot locally, I head on over to WHA. This place has any and everything you could ever want that's archery related, and a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I had an issue with my auto cocking system, the shop that assembled my crossbow didn't tie the knot correctly and it snapped on me first time using it. The staff here helped me take it apart and offered to fix it the right way after I got my warranty piece replaced. They even helped me sight in my scope and gave me plenty of tips on how to use my weapon efficiently. Also shoutout to the women that shoot here, everyone is so friendly and answered all of my questions as a gawked at their $2k+ bows that looked straight out of Hunger Games! LoL read more

The other day I came across this shop never really experienced archery so I decided to stop by. When I walked in I was instantly greeted by Christmas and Jackson. we started talking and Jackson showed me around the shop/range. They even let me shoot a bow for the first time ever and it was awesome. I stayed a while just talking to both of them and to see the friendship they had at work mad me feel comfortable cracking jokes and telling stories. My experience here was fantastic. Keep in mind that this is a pro shop that specializes in quality products and services. I went in knowing technical specs of the bow I wanted and was quickly informed that my research was very good and accurate. This only comes from shooting a bow for 30 plus years. If you are a beginner it may seem their prices are high. This is because they only handle high end equipment however you get what you pay for. Keep in mind the service you get from them is far higher than you would receive in a big box store. I am glad to have them in my area!!! read more

Went in there with my son and it was very clean very few people. I had a few questions so I waited for someone to acknowledge I was there. After awhile a lady got off the phone and when I started asking questions about classes, training and competitions she basically threw a flyer at me. Needless to say I left the flyer. This place is great for their range, shop, and staff - especially staff. They are knowledgeable and willing to help. I bought my boyfriend a Samick Sage for Christmas, 2014, from an online vendor. Unfortunately, I bought a left-hand bow, thinking he was left-eye dominant, though he is actually right-eye dominant. The good folks at WHA corrected my mistake and, when it was too much of a hassle to exchange the bow with the original vendor, they made the exchange themselves. We've had arrows cut, fletched, and repaired there and the lady who does the fletching does quick, solid work. We regularly use the the indoor range. We like it partly because it's indoor and partly because they charge for the full day, rather than by the hour. Mostly, I like it because we are beginners and if we ever have a question or a problem, someone is always nearby and ready to help. read more

My son, who is almost 7 years old, recently had a taste of archery at a Cub Scouting event this weekend, and he found that he really liked it. His only other brush with archery was Wii Sports Archery, and that was enough to give him a good start when he took his first shots with an actual bow and arrows. My last experience with archery was back when I was a Boy Scout, which was... a long time ago. That's our background so you understand our point of view. The store is very clean with the sales area at the front of the building or straight ahead as you enter. The range is toward the back or left of the entrance. It looked like they have a full service "shop", where my son watched as one of the ladies was fletching arrows and another guy was helping a customer adjust his compound bow in what I can only describe as a "test range" with a single target for checking the adjustments being made. The store appears to cater mainly to the bow-hunting crowd, which is probably no real surprise, with an inventory made up mostly of compound bows. There is a small selection of recurves, and they can order equipment as well. They also carry crossbows. I can't really comment on the parts and accessories behind the counter since I'm still a novice at all this. When we arrived, all of the sales people were busy with customers, so my son and I looked around the shop and watched some people practicing in the range. The range was set up with a 10 yd target, a couple of 30 yd targets, and a 40 yd target. I don't know for sure, but it looked like went back as far as about 80 yd. There are hooks on the walls to the left and right of the line to hang equipment and PVC pipe stands to hold your arrows. Range fees are $10/adult and $5/child with all day use. I assume that children must be accompanied by an adult. As I mentioned earlier my son settled on watching the lady fletching arrows, and when one of the guys came available, she called him over for us. His name was Devon, and we talked briefly about how we came to be in the shop, and he took us over to the recurve bows, which were exactly like the ones my son got to shoot the day before. He had my son test draw the bow to make sure that he had one with an appropriate draw weight. The first one was too heavy, and he could barely pull the drawstring. Devon quickly assembled a 15lb bow that they had under the counter, and he was able to draw it easily. They do not rent equipment here, but Devon let my son try it out on the range. After a quick overview on safety and about 15 arrows, my son was hooked, and he hit the target with 13 of the 15 arrows, and this was using full-sized arrows, not junior arrows. I asked about the pros/cons of going with a less expensive bow from like Walmart or Academy, and Devon said that while it's less expensive to see if you like it, if you do, it can cost more in the long run, because the limbs tend to be fixed and not upgradable, and the quality is lower. So if he does decide to stick with it, then you have to replace the whole bow instead of the limbs. I also asked about recurve vs compound, and he said that the biggest reason to start with a recurve is cost. A junior compound bow would cost about $100 more than the recurve my son was holding, which was $130. This all seemed like reasonable information, and Devon wasn't giving me the hard used-car salesman sell, so I decided to go ahead and purchase the bow along with a half-dozen junior sized composite arrows. My son was psyched, because he got to see the bow being "built"! Other reviewers on West Houston Archery's entry for their old location said that their inventory was way overpriced, but I didn't find that to be the case as far as the equipment we purchased was concerned. A quick search on Amazon and Bass Pro showed that the price I paid for the bow and the arrows was very much inline with what I found there for equivalent items. Granted, my experience is based on one recurve bow and six composite arrows, so take that as you will, but my search on Bass Pro's site also showed that a youth compound bow with a draw weight range of 6-12lbs was roughly $100 more, which also tracks with what Devon told me. From my limited data set, I can only conclude that their prices are competitive, possibly slightly higher than a high volume seller like Bass Pro, but that's always going to be the case. I did knock off a star from my rating, but only because they currently do not offer lessons in-store. Really, it would have only been a half star if that was an option. Devon said that they are considering it, but do not offer lessons at this time, but he's there almost every day, and he said he'd be more than happy to help out my son when we come in. If they offered formal lessons, I would have given them the full 5-stars. Service was definitely 5-stars in my opinion. Devon was a great help and very patient with my son. I look forward to going back with my son to practice. read more
