Completely overrated. The pizza and wine were delicious, the rest of the menu tried too hard and under delivered. I am usually pretty open and up for anything, but the steep prices and tiny portions were unforgivable when paired with a disengaged, rude waitstaff. I really wanted to love this place... Don't waste your time. Waited over an hour for our salad to come out, followed by a 20 minute wait for 2 pizzas. Pizzas were ok, but over salted. For a pizza joint expected a much quicker meal. The food was mostly excellent with very unusual flavors and very fresh ingredients. However, don't plan to eat there if you are hungry or in a hurry as the servings are small for the price and, at least for us, the wait for our pizza was longer than any of us in our party of four had ever experienced. We ordered an $18 appetizer, to share, listed on the menu as a 'plate'. It would have been nice if our wait person had mentioned that the portion was suitable for about 1/2 person. The cook staff must have enjoyed a good laugh as we waited 30 minutes for the 'plate' to arrive, as each of us got only a taste consisting of about roughly two teaspoons, while we waited 45 minutes for our two 12" pizzas costing a total of $33 to arrive. Of the two pizzas, one had a topping of fresh tomato paste and goat cheese and was tasted vaguely like ones I made as a child with ketchup and Velveta cheese. Don't order that one if you want something with taste. In summary, it is a great place to spend a lot of time and money for small portions of unusual food with unrecognizable ingredients. read more

The other dishes are ridiculously overpriced and the food is meh. Our server was apathetic and clearly not happy to see us. We ordered the salmon which we were instructed as a must try and we paid $20 for literally two bites of fish. We also ordered the oysters which were served with a melon granita which was an unpleasant pairing and again did not warrant the price being charged. There is pizza, there is really good pizza, and then there is pizza so good you wonder what you were eating before. Hogstones, however, is much more than an exceptionally good pizzeria. We were first given a complimentary appetizer of fresh tomatoes, basel, and fennel, which was spectacularly good. The tomatoes were rich and juicy, and the fennel kicked in after the tomato flavor faded slightly, so you had this wonderful shifting effect. We followed that with a very complex appetizer (far from complimentary), whose name begins with "The Last of the Pork" and continued on from there. Our delightful server informed us that the chef and his business partner raise their own pigs, and this was the last of the past year's crop. The appetizer consisted of grilled hock meat, grilled scallions, fruit, and a few other flavors. It's with this dish you realize that the chef is aiming very high indeed, and succeeding. Then we had the pizzas, which were damn near perfect. Cooked in a wood-fired oven, the crust comes out perfectly done with just enough char to make things interesting. My son had a simple cheese pizza, my wife had the goat cheese and roasted tomato, and my daughter and I had a more complex and ambitious pie: roasted potatoes, fried bacon fat, arugula, and one or two more ingredients. Just amazing. Hogstone's is a perfect example of the farm to table movement, in which chefs take the freshest possible ingredients and then use them to reinvent traditional dishes. My one regret is that we came to Orcas on vacation, so we can't eat here regularly. read more

Maybe it's the campfire smell, or the experience of being outdoors in such a beautiful setting, but everything tasted like the absolute best version of whatever it was. The salad I ordered came with fresh, peppery greens and some of the most delicious goat cheese I've ever tasted. The lamb and charred pepper plate was incredible. Fantastic pizza. I ate an entire pie to myself. So that should be enough said. Definitely not your traditional NY slice of pie if that's what you're looking for but this was a refreshing change to greasy cheese pizza (which I do love). The emphasis on local, fresh ingredients appeals to me. So does the dining atmosphere. Good music..cool art on the walls. Server was pleasant without being overly pestering. Wine has local and French by the glass so whatever you're looking for will be accommodated for. Definitely recommend this place. read more

Well when the weather is perfect and sitting outside eating pizza can be magical! We went there two nights in a row last week during our visit to Orcas island. We were walking to town from our rental and passed this place when they were opening up for the evening and decided to go there later with the kids and get some pizza and salad. It's really cool these guys run their own farm during the day and pizzeria at night with ingredients they grew. The menu was limited to about 6 pizzas, one salad, one dessert and a limited amount of beer, wine and sodas. When we were there they had moved operations outside and had the mobile, woodfired pizza oven going. I will echo what other were saying, do not expect to get your pizza quickly, it will take a good 1/2 hour or more to get your food so don't come in their starving. We did get salads and they were simple and delicious! They served wine in small Ball jars and the pours were generous. One little problem is that either they didn't anticipate the demand but they ran out of certain wines and beers and sodas. I jokingly asked the hipster guy running the cash register to go across the street and get some more from the Island Market and he wasn't amused. The pizzas were excellent and we chowed down on them! We loved it so much, we went back the next night! read more

A quaint little place of mixed experience. Friendly staff. Interesting menu. Greens salad generous. Beet dish delicious but over priced by a third. Pizza had a thin crisp crust. Dough needed salt. We asked for red pepper flakes and the wait staff offered pepper oil which we said would be great. The wait staff the came back and said they had neither pepper oil or even black pepper??? Really??? This was a very delicious meal we had last night, July 10th.The pizza sauce was so yummy, and the raw beef and oysters were very good. The clams were expertly prepared, but a little small portion sized. Our waitress was wonderful, but the hostess was very rude. We had an hour wait, which was fine and expected during this time of year, but her attitude made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. One person in my party actually said they heard another group leave and say " We're not eating here, they're rude" which is too bad because the rest of the servers were wonderful. I would probably give them more then 3 stars if it hadn't been for her. You cannot undo a first impression. read more

If you want to feel like you are on the t.v. show Punk'd or Portlandia this place is for you! While the pizza was what we expected - artisan, slightly over-priced but tasty (albeit not exceptional) what got us were the other menu items. We love to support locally-sourced foods but we also like to know what we're getting and leave full... The menu is ambiguous and over-stated at the same time. Let's just say trying too hard without good results. The $15 "steamed and grilled potato, sweet onions, cheddar" appetizer (or "plate") was 3 (3!) small new potatoes and a dish of foamed cheese. The drinks were also entertaining, like "lemon" for instance... my son ordered this just to see what is was ($4 or $5, can't remember) - it was described as a "bitter, dry lemon soda"... fancy, you say?? It was a bottle of old-school Bubble Up soda (think basic lemon-lime soda). And dessert options include "tulsi, buttermilk" and "grains, dairy". Mmm.... no thanks. We opted out of dessert and filled our bellies with sweet, delicious, non-pretentious ice cream down the road. We will not return but will enjoy our memories of an entertaining menu ("oysters from 344 yards away") and grumbling tummies later that evening. read more

GO HERE IMMEDIATELY!! Chefs tasting menu was out of this world; 3 hours of deliciously creative (9 course!) fresh island delicacies. We were completely comfortable in the restaurant, our server was so knowledge and friendly and the awesome chef presented all meals. Wow. The amazing haughtiness and dismissive-ness of customers by staff cannot be paralled. It is a fascinating phenomenon to feel like the waitstaff "deign" to serve you. The meals are preposterous. So small they need a five minute description by the chef to be remotely valid. We ordered pizza which arrived blackened, burnt and our hair and clothes smelled like smoke for days after we left. In all ways, the Hogstone is a place to be experienced, but only if you feel like being condescended to, served minuscule portions, pay ridiculously high prices and leave covered in smoke. What an experience! My husband and I are still laughing at how preposterous it was. We swear it is must be a social experiment secretly being filmed entitled: "What will unsuspecting restaurant guests actually put up with without standing up and demanding actual food and actual service?!" read more

As was the case with at least 2 other places in Orcas (turns out several locals really have an inflated sense of self), when we walked in we were asked for a reservation. We had the Margherita, which is plain but so good, the Hog, which has house cured pork loin, apple cider sauce and local chèvre from Myers Creamery. Ok...I'm a jaded islander - and I know NOT to try and eat out on Orcas anytime in summer, or Spring Break, or Memorial Day, or Labor Day...OK- AND Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's...plus Easter, and probably Valentine's Day. Let's start with the positive. This was the best pizza we had ever eaten. We ordered a small plate of clams. It was 4 tiny clams in green sauce with some smoked pearl onion layers and flowers. It was beautiful but immediately I regretted spending $16 on this tiny plate of food. That was, until I tasted it. I have no idea how they got so much smoked flavor in these tiny clams. The sauce was so interesting and unique, I asked to keep it and dipped my pizza crust in it. We ordered 2 pizzas, the cow cheese, tomato, and basil for the kids and the waiter's recommendation that including toppings of kale, horseradish, and cured egg yolks. I didn't see an egg yolk on the pizza and the waiter even took it to the kitchen to confirm they hadn't forgotten it. We were skeptical but the pizza was mind blowing. We were bargaining with our kids to not eat their dinner because we wanted their pizza too. My 5 year old ate 4 slices. We shared a bottle of wine so our bill ended up being around $90. So on one hand, it seems kind of spendy but if you go order 2 pizzas your bill will be less than $30 and you will have tasted some seriously, amazing farm to table food. Also, on the positive side, we have 3 children under the age of 5 and they were able to play in the outdoor picnic table seating area without annoying anyone while we waited for our food. On to the drawbacks, the small plates are spendy for a very small amount of food- however, this is food you won't find anywhere else. Second, it is a ridiculous wait if you show up between 5:30-7:30 without reservations- Make reservations. We were there at 6:30 and waited almost an hour until they agreed to set up a table for us, which meant, put up another picnic table. At 7:30 the restaurant was mostly empty but had stopped seating because they were running out of dough. We were then ignored while our waiter cleared several other tables before coming to talk to us. He did apologize for the wait, made excellent recommendations and was knowledgeable about the wine so it was all easily forgiven. Our honest impression was that some of this, is purposeful. I mean, it seems ridiculously pretentious; hard to get a table, they might run out of food, super small portions, etc... but truthfully, when the food delivers on that level, it can't really be considered pretentious. It is still at least a 4 star and maybe should be a 5 star review because the food is just that good. I will eat there every time I visit island, for sure. read more

The pizza was good, the wait for food was long and the wine list both extensive and expensive. They need to advertise tapas instead of calling the $16.00 plate, plates. The oysters were $16.00 for four on the half shell, a pint of IPA was over priced but good. The atmosphere was good and the server very good. Just know that they typically serve what is available on the island and the menu changes based on that. Don't come super hungry unless you want to spend a bunch of money. My husband and I arrived right as the place opened at 5:30pm on a Thursday night in early June. We got some looks from the staff for not having a reservation. They seated us (outside, smack in the sun) but never seemed too happy about it. The food was good but we waited 45 mins for our small plate oyster appetizer and 90 mins for our cheese and tomato pizzas. This is way too long, even in a slow-food like establishment. We will check out other Orcas eateries next time. read more
