My wife and I came to orcas island on the last ferry for a few nights and had no idea everything closes early even the gas stations. No food or snacks anywhere on the island past 10? We drove past this place and noticed a couple people inside so we figured we would stop and ask. A kind gentleman came to the door and I explained we were hungry and looking for anything at this point. He fixed us a little box of snacks and would not except a dollar from me. I appreciate kindness of this magnitude. Most people would shrug there shoulders and not care about someone at a locked door. The kale hen egg small plate was tasteless. Total waste of $14. it tasted like a regular egg and I could have just made scrambled egg at home and it would have been more appetizing. Ruined my Saturday night first time on orcas. Go elsewhere. I have eaten in many cities at great places and this was nowhere near on par. Extremely overpriced to go with the super small portion. Order the pizza!! Outstanding delight! So why the low rating? Well, the left side of the menu is the "sides," and it should say "...for suckers." We ordered the potatoes and got seven tiny potatoes (think a third of a size of a ping pong ball) with a single thyme leaf preciously balanced on top of each 'tator. The portion was so incredibly small for the $13 price that two of us spontaneously burst out laughing. (I believe one of us snorted.)The cheese sauce served on the side was good but, we could not stop laughing and it was over in a two bites from each of us. Then came out our order of mushrooms, which were EVEN smaller in size; TWO small mushrooms for $20!!!!!! One of the mushrooms was thinly sliced and intentionally not cooked. Not even wildly exotic mushrooms. As if this was not bad enough, the waiter had such a bad, pretentious attitude. He wanted to be "in command" of us... terrible service. By way of example, we finished ordering our main course, one of us was curious about what lay ahead and asked, "Do you have a dessert menu we can look at?" He replied, "It was on your menu." "Well, can you tell us about it so we can be thinking about it." Snootily he replied, "I will tell you about it when it is time for dessert..." the rudeness ensued through out our meal. Fortunately, the pizzas are spectacular... a Tomatillo pizza and a smoked tomato - both delicious. I'm vegan and probably would have skipped this place if there had been any other place to eat in town on a Sunday evening. And that would have been my loss. A totally simple pizza with an herb-infused marinara was one of the best things I've ever tasted. The scorched wood-oven taste of the dough was mind-bendingly good. A single bulb of young garlic lay across one slice of the pizza as if to highlight how little was really necessary for a fabulous pizza. My non-veg boyfriend had something with cheese...both of us were smiling ear to ear and saying "wow" between bites. Both of us agree it was the best pizza we've ever had. read more

Hogstone is fantastic. I mean, in all honesty, if you visit Orcas for a day and don't eat at Hogstone, you're really doing yourself a disservice. 5/5 for sure. Fantastic spot in Eastsound for a nice dinner. There aren't many restaurant options on Orcas in general and I've never really been wowed until going to Hogstone. We ordered the Margherita and the Oyster Mushroom and it was plenty for two people. Light and fresh ingredients; the crust was perfect. The ambiance is really wonderful for a date night. It's a small cozy spot with only a handful of tables. The staff was very friendly as well. We left a message asking to make a reservation for 2 and the host called me back within 15 minutes. The next time I'm on Orcas, I will definitely return! read more

We like to give credit where credit is due. Just had dinner at Aelder in the Orca Islands, WA. Chef Jay Blackinton was voted as one of the Best New Chefs with Food and Wine. Chef Blackinton has accomplished the mastery of fine foods without any professional training. Each plate was impressive and all locally sourced. The restaurant atmosphere needs improvement. The restaurant was converted from the Hogstone's Wood Oven to be used for their fine dining facility. The dining area was small and those eating outside would come in and use the only bathroom, right next to our table. The bathroom door needs to close on it's own as people would leave the door open after using it. The beverage pairing was pretty bad and disappointing. Since we had dinner on their second night of opening, I knew they could improve seeing the Chef delivers great food. read more

After multiple trips to Italy, Hogstone's pizza is definitely in my top 3 favorite pizzas ever. The small menu offers farm to table veggies and locally raised meat, as well as organic cheese. The crust is the perfect combo of soft and crisp, and the sauce is tangy and sweet. Their house-raised meat (sausage last time I was there, but I think it changes occasionally.) was well seasoned and delicious. The atmosphere is fun and rustic, with mason jar glasses and picnic table seating areas. Definitely a must-have if you are in Eastsound! read more

We went here last year and enjoyed our experience so decided to come here again.The restaurant was super close to the Seastar Lofts that we stayed in so we walked over. We walked in and they said that all tables inside had reservations but still gave us a table. Waiter was nice and we ordered two Margaritas and one pork and kale (Forgot what it was called) and a hay roasted vegetables with rhubarb cream sauce. The vegetables came first and even though they were a bit pricey for the small amount of food that came on the plate, they were delicious and we were soon awaited by the pizza. We had recently been to Italy and tried the best Neapolitan pizza ever. This margarita was delicious, and to all the people that say the crust is "burnt" the crust was sublime and complemented the cow cheese and tomato sauce perfectly. The pork and kale pizza came next and it was a pleasant surprise. Even though I tend to not love pizzas without red sauce, it was tasty and the intense salty cheese went well with the crust and the beautifully roasted pork. Last weekend, we visited our son who lives on Orcas Island, and we told him to pick a restaurant to celebrate his 26th birthday. Hogstone was new to him, but he'd heard good things about it. We called for a reservation, and good thing, too, because most of the restaurant was booked for a large wedding party. With no tables available, we were seated at the bar, which our booking person said would be cool and was her favorite seat in the house. She was right! What a treat to be able to watch the Hogstone artisans prepare their delectables. (Full disclosure: 90 minutes of barstool seating was murder. But worth it.) With our server's gracious guidance, we decided to order three small plates and two pizzas to share, and each had a glass of (excellent) wine. Small plate #1 was six (very local, from the bay only a few blocks away) oysters with a roasted onion granita. (A+) Small plate #2 was a small pork chop with an apple "jam" - I'm picky about my pork (no factory pigs need apply) and this was A+. Small plate #3: a potato creme/froth, with a sous vide coddled egg yolk, wild greens, and garnished with salmon eggs. I'm a big sushi/sashima fan, but I generally don't care for the fishiness of fish eggs...BUT these weren't fishy at all. This dish was wonderful. Beyond wonderful. Fabulous. A++ Then the pizzas arrived. The best margharita (tomato sauce, goat cheese base) any of us has ever tasted, with a carmelized, nutty flavor. (A++) The other pizza was a melange of toppings, including crispy cubes of pork fat. (A+) (Alert to fat demonizers; this is not your restaurant.) These are thin-crust pizzas, cooked in a wood-fired oven so the crust does have charred spots. Another reviewer noted that as a negative, but IMO, it makes the crust better. Could we stop there? No, we could not. We shared a creme flan-ish dessert with quince and some other ingredients I can't recall, and it was A+. AND, the server having overheard us mention my son's birthday, she comped him a small ice cream dessert. This item wasn't my favorite, but the attentive gesture was much appreciated. The menu is hyper-local and hyper-seasonal, so it is quite likely that most of the items I've described won't be available when you visit. Lo siento! I'd confidently return, though, because I'm sure whatever was on offer would be just as good. Now, to be fair, here are some issues to consider: This restaurant is VERY small. Even without a boisterous wedding party, it is going to be noisy when it gets busy. Likewise, since everything is so freshly prepared, there will be a wait for your food. (We were happy since we had the entertainment of watching the kitchen, but it might have been a drag sitting at a table, since there was too much noise to converse.) Before tip, our bill came to $50 per person. For over-the-top food and presentation, plus wine and dessert, I call that very fair. For a couple going out for nice evening meal of wine and small plate each, plus a pizza to share, it would be a lot less. read more

I will start by saying the pizza was burnt. There is a difference between thin-crust and burnt to the point that the crust is inedible piece of burnt bread. It took them over an hour to get us 3 pizzas. If we have not pressed them, it might have taken them 2 hours. We ordered one appetizer (mushrooms) while we waited for pizzas. The waitress passed us by several times asking us how we were doing while she clearly saw that our plates were empty and the kids were getting kind of hungry. When we had questions about the menu items her tone was very condescending at best and some might call it downright rude. We were not there to buy their overpriced liquor which seems to be their priority. For the price of the tiny portions, it would have been a better experience had the servers been polite. These guys know how to do it right. Very tasty thin crust Neapolitan pizza with just the right amount of toppings. They also have really good homemade sourdough gluten-free crusts available, which makes this place a popular spot for me and my girlfriend, who is gluten-intolerant. Stellar gluten free desserts too. It's great to have a restaurant on the Orcas being run by the same people that are growing the food, and that is the case with Hogstone...these guys run Maple Rock Farm, an organic farm on Orcas. The salads are AMAZING, likely because they picked the greens from 1 mile away the same day you are eating them. The same is true of the toppings. Jay, one of the owners, raises all the pork they use on the island. If they have a special when you show up, get it. I highly recommend this spot: good vibe from the crew, real food and right in Eastsound. Even my girlfriends Chicago/Italian parents liked it when we took them there...and that is no small feat. read more

Stayed on Orcas Island for 2 nights. Decided to try Hogstone because the menu looked delicious and interesting. When we arrived we waited for over 20 minutes for a hostess or waitress to pay attention to us and take down our name to wait for a table. Seemed like there was not enough staff available to handle the summer crowds. We sat at the bar as some people left and it gave us a great view of the whole restaurants and the other people sitting waiting outside. Everything seemed great from the beginning. A pretty good drink selection. We ordered one of the smaller plates and a pizza to share for 2 people. The small plates are actually REALLY small and are way over priced. You will pay like $14-20 for nothing. If you are hungry order 3 pizzas instead. What happened next was just insane. The place ran out of pizza dough at 7:15 pm on a Thursday night. However, the wait staff did not tell anyone- they kept it a secret and continued to seat people and allow new people to wait outside for more than 30 minutes to find out their fate. We could hear the whispers in the kitchen and watched the whole scene play out. One waitress was visibly upset because she had just sat a party of 15 who had a reservation and unfortunately they would not be eating any pizza. We watched as the new people being seated we offered the "small plates" only menu and were visibly upset with the lack of service and dishonesty. After about 1 hour passed by, we were also worried that we would not be getting the pizza we had ordered. The waitress came up to us and asked us if we we're ready for dessert. Uh no? We haven't even had our meal and it was 8:20! She looked frustrated and went and put our order in. She immediately came back and apologized and removed 3 drinks from our tab. The pizza was small and tasted okay. Nothing to write home about. We were still so hungry that we immediately drove to a restaurant in Westsound to grab dessert. My biggest complain about this place is that it is managed very poorly! They clearly are not planning ahead with enough food for the summer crowds and don't hire enough staff. The 2 waitresses are pulled in a million different directions and are responsible for working the bar, the inside, the outside and as hostess. That is just a recipe for a disaster in service. The waitresses themselves are very nice and did the best they could given the situation. Moral of the story: if you plan to eat here, arrive around 6 pm when the crowd is smaller and there is still food available. read more

Hogstone's was a truly excellent dining experience. The food displayed refinement and innovation that I definitely wasn't expecting for a pizza place on Orcas Island. My appetizer was a sockeye salmon in salmon bone broth with kelp oil and summer squash. Absolutely delicious. And the wood oven pizza I ordered was equally phenomenal -- fresh ingredients, chewy yet not overly dense crust, and great flavor. Sure, there was some char on the pizza -- it IS cooked in a wood burning oven that melt a wax figurine of William Howard Taft in 30 seconds flat. But I wouldn't call it burnt by any means, as some other reviewers have suggested. I think the issue some people seem to be having is that the prices and portions are somewhat surprising given this is a pizza joint on a remote island. But the menu prices are perfectly in line with what you might expect from any restaurant of this caliber in a larger city. Given the quality, it didn't seem exorbitant, merely fair. Again, I think it's more of a matter of expectations. Took a little while to get seated, but once I did I found my server incredibly knowledgeable about both the menu and the wine list. She even brought me a complimentary glass of tawny after my meal, which was a nice touch. If you find yourself on Orcas Island and want to take a break from dining at the island's truly stellar Doe Bay Cafe, I highly recommend Hogstone's. read more

Everything was over-the-top pretentious and "special". I found the pizzas we tried too salty because of the toppings. I like gourmet pizzas, but I don't think they've quite nailed it. I had ordered the pizza, which was comparably bewildering to my apparently-philistine tastes. I make wood fired pizza myself, though usually use conventional sauce rather than a light brushing of a rather dry vinegar(?), and enough cheese for each slice to contain some(!). I would call it bland if it weren't so unpleasantly sour. I asked for a box rather than admit that I was going to throw the rest away, and left a 20% tip for the waitress since it wasn't her fault, though like I say we breathed a sigh of relief when the rain ended our ordeal. read more

I came here for dinner, and to wait out a little bit of (unexpected) rain before returning to my campsite. The interior aesthetic is hip, cozy, and inviting. The staff are all incredibly kind, gracious, and attentive- I had a number of questions about their adventurous, bold, and creative menu, and they were more than happy to break it all down for me. The food was absolutely delicious and unique. Unfortunately, I didn't write anything down that I ordered or that was on the menu (though I wish I had), but it was all unlike anything I had tasted before. I went for one of the pizzas for an entre, one with a house-made (like everything else they have) tomatillo, goat cheese (I think) and brassica (which I had never even heard of before this, but they made it work wonderfully). The dessert was original and inspired, with a fantastic compliment of sweet, tart, and tang. These guys are just great, and so lovely and serious about what they do, and it made me so happy to stumble upon their restaurant. They all strike me as a young group who run the place out of a passion of their own hearts, and are all devoted to making food as delicious, wholesome, locally-sourced and natural as possible. We eat every day, but not always do we sit down are reminded to be mindful of the importance and joy of having a meal, and of our deep connection to the ritual of a meal as a means of sustaining ourselves physically and mentally. After reading the reviews, I will 5 star this place. Though portions are small, and it is pricey, the food is great and the artistry that goes into it is beyond my expectations! As for the service, I sat at the bar and received great service, so I can't say what it would have been like for service sitting at the tables; if indeed the responses regarding service is lacking, then Hogstone needs to step up to the plate and John and Jay do need to address those concerns since they are the management owners. I met both of them and they were very amiable. Jay is a true artist with food, and all of my questions were answered by the girls, Jocelyn, Betsy and Elena. Dru's smiles in the hot kitchen showed his enthusiasm and he delivered 2 great pizzas for us. Thanks to the entire staff. We enjoyed it immensely. read more

First off, Im rating 4 star, however I didnt really like the pizzas I ate. The good: great crust, cooked perfectly, and solid ingredients. The bad: why have locally sourced pork to put on a pizza and then cut it into a super thin straw shape and cook the hell out of it. Might has welll have been spam, would have tasted the same at that point. Personal Preference: The tomato and goat cheese pizza was so smokey tasting. I didnt enjoy that. The pork and pear pizza had the aforementioned issue with the pork, again had a super smokey taste, and I tasted zero pear. I left thinking its a well run restaurant that somehow makes pizzas I dont really enjoy. The bar sections have metal stools that are uncomfortable after about ten minutes. I have a high standard for pizza and Hogstone EXCEEDED expectations!! We got the fresh cow mozzarella and marinara pizzas, with the charred brassica salad to start. The salad had just the right amount of dressing and the shaved egg yolk (yeah that's right grated egg yolk y'all!) added an Umami element to the dish. The pizzas were, again, top notch. The mozzarella was amazing but the sauce was the best part. Hogstone has the freshest pizza sauce I have ever tasted. We asked our wonderful waitress if they grew the tomatoes in the back. In many ways i really enjoy what Hogstone is trying to accomplish, serving seasonal products sourced from the island when possible. That being said the place is definitely missing something and does as many reviewers say come off elitist or pretentious. The outdoor seating is great and expansive which is in a state that lacks it. The inside is definitely small and a bit over furnished comparatively and for largely being a pizza place but is certainly nice overall. Service was certainly a bit off, but i know how hard staffing can be so i can excuse that to an extent except for when the price comes into play. So the food is where issues certainly arise. The pizzas are ok nothing to ever write home about so i would definitely not come here thinking about just ordering them, especially with the prices. We had three different ones and two of them the dough was clearly pretty raw in spots even though it had good char from oven, but definitely a bit undercooked in the crust. The third pie was much better and largely all three had good flavor but too expensive overall and the rawness of the first two was a bit troublesome especially on a very slow Monday with plenty of staff. We had oysters which were very good as one would expect, a bit strong of mignonette but well shucked. The main issue we had was a course that i cannot remember what is was classified as, pretty sure a salad. For $16 though it was one hen yolk with flowers and small amount of some sort of brassica. This dish was maybe a great amusee but nothing beyond that. Flavors were good but the price was truly astonishing. Maybe a small hiccup in pricing for this but with the prices of other things i would warn people to expect big markups when eating here. And for the island pricing that only goes so far with the amount of farming on island and proximity to seafood. To some extent products are cheaper as are rents on island. I hope they can tone down the approach a bit and understand costing a bit better, and pay more attention to all the details. And try to not be so defensive to reviewers, yes Yelp is a breeding ground of hate but most of what i read seem to be confirmed with my experience. read more

My boyfriend and I saw Hogstone's on a walk earlier today, and decided to try it out for dinner tonight. We had no dinner reservation, so we showed up when they opened for dinner; we were seated immediately and the hostess was pleasant. The inside dining area is quite small and it filled with diners before too long. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. We shared a bottle of Cabernet and each ordered a pizza. The pizzas were delivered within 15 minutes of ordering - they were delish! I loved that the pizza was not drenched in cheese and olive oil - the thin crust pizza dough was baked to yummy perfection - crispy and lightly charred underneath. We also got dessert - sweet grass ice cream, which was small in portion and very much home made. I loved that it was not sickeningly sweet, like most commercial ice cream. We really enjoyed our farm-to-table experience here! It is definitely not the generic run-of-the-mill dining experience, with unique menu offerings. read more
