i stayed here with my two other friends (girls) for three nights and it was great! its in a great location and transportation was easily accessible from here. the staff at the front desk were all cool, we actually made friends with one of the guys. our room and bathroom was clean when we arrived. one thing that my friends and i weren't sure about was how housecleaning worked. nobody came and cleaned and replaced towels or anything. it wasn't a big deal to us to be honest, we didnt need our room to be cleaned, but i bet someone would like to know about it. our room didnt come with an ironing board and iron, but we were able to easily get it by calling the front desk. st. clair was a nice place to stay at! like i said, the location was perfect and we felt safe in the hotel. read more

The St.Clair not unclean, per se. but it isn't totally clean, either. The hallways are kind of dingy and the elevators are gross. There's also this feeling that much remains unfinished-lots of empty shelves. The rooms are tiny. I had to be sure to stand in the bathroom doorway; it was the only way to get enough elbow space to shave and brush my teeth. The walls are too thin. You can hear everything your neighbor says and what he's watching on tv. Plus, they failed my litmus test: if you can't afford to put an ice machine on every floor for God's sake raise your rates a couple bucks. Last, but not least, the internet is spotty and slow when it works. But then maybe that's the city. I found the internet and wi-fi sucked everywhere I went. Please God, give us people educated enough and skilled enough to lay fiber optic, and a government with the wisdom to pay to have it done. read more

I stayed 3 nights at this hotel would describe it as a "nice motel" type. If you want a nice, clean, convenient low cost (for downtown) place to crash this is a great find. If you want the "big city hotel experience", I'd choose another spot. Pros - Location: One block from Michigan. Many good restaurants and quick take out close. Easy walk to river and Navy pier. Northwestern Hospital also two short blocks away - Room: Appears to be recently redone. Floors were nice laminate, so no nasty carpet to deals with. Bed was very comfortable, although a bit high to climb into if short. - Value: Good price for the location. - Safety: Need an active key to use elevator other than lobby. Nice Cons - Not soundproof. Easily hear everything in the hallway. Only a small amount of rooms per floor, so this issue would depend on if noisy floormates. - Rooms: Very small. Standard room does NOT have mini fridge or any type of table/desk. Basically a bed and one square ottoman (to sit on or place luggage). (Management tip - Adding mini fridge to ALL rooms is recommended to increase rating) - No late check out?: Regular check out was noon and they "say" call in am to request late check out. I originally only was to stay one night but extended daily up to 3. Ironically they were too full to honor a late check out 3 days in a row, but had plenty of rooms to extend stay. Items to note (not really good or bad) - Lobby was being remodeled and closed off so can't comment on. - Fitness room in process of remodel but looks to be nice. - Toiletries were decent brands, although was a mishmash of brands by day and/or item. Gave the impression they were using up leftovers. - Room had coffeemaker (nice) but cord is too short to use in proper location. I had to balance half over sink to plug in and use. (Management tip: easy fix and would prevent a potential accident) - Looks like a lot of remodeling being done. It remains to be seen if the prices change when complete. read more

The short version of this review is that I loved the hotel but the proximity to the hospital meant hearing ambulances every half hour like clockwork for the 5 hours before bed. I am sensitive to noise. I put in earplugs at some point and managed to sleep ok but it could have just been a lucky night. The value was good for what I paid. The staff was very friendly, though the hotel was understaffed. I felt bad for the guy doing check in, check out, and phones on his own on a weekend 2 days in a row. This is on the management. There were a few people there in the morning only on the day I checked in, though many hours before check in. I was leaving my bag. But it took forever to check in and out when it was just the one guy there later and the next day, not his fault. The room itself was nice and the amenities are reasonable for the price. The bed was a little firm but the bedding was very soft. I am a side sleeper so a firm mattress is not the best for me. The sink is tiny and water will get everywhere but just put a towel down. Overall it was very nice. One of the two elevators was broken and someone said it had been that way for a week, not great. So getting down was a pain when it stopped at multiple floors and there was no room for anyone to even get on, as the elevator is about half the size of a normal elevator. read more

The rooms are a little smaller than you'd expect but still spacious enough to have luggage and walk around. It's clean, bright, and has a nice big bed; exactly what I needed at night because we were gone exploring during the day. Staff was very friendly and greeted us each time we came and went. We enjoyed our stay at the St. Clair. My husband and I were in town for a Cubs game. It was very convenient to get to the Red Line (a direct ride to Wrigley.) The location of the St. Clair can not be beat walking distance to every thing. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The lobby is small and becomes crowded during check in and check out times. This was not an issue for us at all. They have valet parking for $58/day. I recommend this hotel to couples or singles traveling. The elevator is small, heads up if you have a lot of luggage or a big family. We will stay again. Very clean. read more

A very nice "cheap" hotel near the loop. It's new and in good condition. Lovely front desk. I didn't offer up But the front desk person got out do me that we were downtown for our anniversary. He asked me if we were going straight to our room (which i thought was weird) then when we arrived in our room, there was a cute note, orchid and chocolate waiting for us. Very sweet. The rooms are nice but narrow. My only complaint is the very loud vents/heater. They leave you earplugs. Thank goodness. All in all, we had a very nice stay. read more

Stay as far away from this hotel as you possibly can. Currently trying to get ahold of the attorney general and the better business bureau. First, our room was unclean, used masks on the floor and had a fire alarm disconnected with bare wires showing. I had mentioned 4 times to the front desk about the fire alarm being reattached and was met with little reaction at all. I took a picture the day we arrived, and the day we left, it was never remedied. Now on to the fraud.. Two days after we left we were randomly charged 400 dollars by the hotel, no phone call or any form of communication was used by them to let us know why. After calling for a manager that took two days to respond, we were told that our room had flooded after we left. The manager we spoke with used the cadence of a 13 year old using arguing strategies such as yelling at us, laughing, talking over us and insults. When pressed for evidence of the so called flooded room he said he wouldn't give it to us. When i pressed him to find out what it was we did wrong we got 3 completely different stories with 3 different times as well. He eventually said that the sink had over flowed. After telling him the sink had no plug in the drain to have possibly caused a flood not to mention the sink has drain holes at the top to prevent flooding, he just hung up on me. The funnest part is that he must of thrown a little fit because twenty minutes after our conversation he went and charged 200 more dollars on our account presumably just out of childish spite. I will be writing a review everywhere possible and trying to get ahold of whoever i possibly can until this attempted scam is rectified. read more

Cleanliness and updated hotel, the area was super convenient. Nice TV in room, hardwood floors. Complementary coffee even though I didn't drink. The hotel has pets stay for free so I did like that option as well. Not the best view from our room. The cleaning staff kept us up at all night, passing by a few times an hour since 11pm up til 11am. So ultimately did not sleep well because I'm a light sleeper. The walls are very thin so we heard every time someone passed by or talked. No fridge or microwave. Was told there would be a room surprise for our anniversary and there was not. We paid $118 with tax for one night. Worth for location on magnificent mile but would not stay here again. There are lots of other hotels in this area worth spending a few more dollars. read more

Huge credit to the staff. This hotel has an amazing staff and great customer service. If you stay here, you get discounts for a few local restaurants with your key card. The room was clean as well as the lobby, hallways, etc. I would say the price I paid for 2 nights for NYE (December 30th - January 1st) was an absolute steal for the location. I would 100% book again for the location alone, but having a clean hotel and friendly staff round out my stay as nearly perfect. The only complaint would be the elevators. They are small (to be expected) and sometimes slow. However, I wouldn't stop that from me booking another stay here. read more

Never again! Don't compromise because this property is slightly cheaper than the next best alternative. Although service was friendly and accommodating, the hotel itself is falling apart! We had to change rooms 3 times ( and I promise we're not that picky normally)... all rooms were TINY, but we knew that based on prior reviews. The first room we got reeked of cigarette smoke and you could hear sirens from non stop ambulances (medical facilities nearby) as if they were in the room! The second room was okay so we settled in but discovered past midnight that the shower didn't work (as in NO water came out)! So we requested a move and were offered a room on the same floor right next to the elevators. To avoid further issues we asked for another option which was two floors up. Desperate for sleep we said yes, as the shower worked, but when I went for a shower the water never heated up beyond tepid! Too tired to complain, we stuck to this room but the next day we discovered how dirty it was (hair on the bedspread and in the shower that wasn't ours) and that the water pressure kept going in and out! Which meant when you have soap on your face it's not guaranteed you'll be able to wash it off until the water decides to return!!!! The beds were comfortable and the coffee maker was useful. But really disappointed with this hotel overall. The elevator also took FOREVER to close after you got in and selected your floor, and made the strangest noise as it went up/down, as though something was hitting the side. The location is amazing, but highly recommend choosing a different hotel unless you don't plan to actually be in the room for more than 5mins! read more

Currently staying here. It is impossible to rest and nap in your room during the day....the guests are inconsiderate and talk loud on the floor as they wait for the elevator which takes forever as there is only 2 elevators and then the housekeeping staff continuously make noise. They talk loud to their colleagues on the corridor and each time they go in and out of a room as they clean, the door makes a noise as it closes. Instead of just gently closing the door they allow it to slam behind them. And this was continuous each day for the duration of my stay. So annoying and inconsiderate! Other than the above, rooms are small and clean. I would not stay here again and would probably recommend others to look elsewhere to stay. read more

All of the customers wait almost one hour after the hotel's check-in time. The hotel lobby has a huge amount of people and even no space to stand! The location is central to everything. We were able to walk to millennium park in the Navy pier and other prime locations within the city that is very touristy. When we first checked and it was crazy packed apparently there was a festival over the weekend. Our original room wasn't ready so we just settled for what ever was available. After checking in staff encouraged us to continue to check every hour to see if a new room would open. Sadly after two days they were extremely over booked and nothing was still available. Finally on the last night I explained Daniel the situation and he was fully aware of our situation. Since it was later at night he went out of his way to make it happen. There was a room available but the cleaning staff had left for the night. Too make our experience better he went out of his way and cleaned the entire room, switched out our sheets and got the room prepared. Because of his actions and being so accommodating we were able to enjoy the last night. read more

We were not able to close it once the room started to get cold so we called the front desk. They told us that there was nothing they could do and subjected us to sleep with the window open all night. So the good news -- reasonable rates, good location, really pleasant people staffing the front desk, clean room, comfy beds, modern decor. The bad news -- tiny, claustrophobic elevators, poorly ventilated hallways, loud a/c unit in the room, and despite recent renovations, the rooms are showing signs of wear (see the scuffed wall on attached pic -- chewed up by a chair hitting the wall). The hotel needs to prioritize maintenance, otherwise it's going to age itself out prematurely by discerning guests who expect more. read more

SKIP THIS HOTEL!! While the price and online photos make it seem attractive, the hotel is completely sketchy and disgusting. The "clientele" seemed to be young people there to party. I was placed in a room on the second floor, which is also where the ice machine is located. All night, I was woken up by rowdy guests, the ice machine being used, slamming doors and the smell of weed. I called the next morning to be moved to another room, and rather than try to move me, I was told to call back around 4pm so they could see if there were any other rooms available. Keep in mind, I had already prepaid for 2 nights and the hotel is 10 floors. The customer service was sh*! On top of it, the rooms were extremely tiny and dirty. My bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned; there was toothpaste spit dried on the sink. Really gross. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere! read more

Great place to stay! Clean, the staff is very nice and it's extremely convenient to everything you need. Starbucks and Garrett's popcorn across the street in addition to a couple of restaurants and It's downtown and not expensive. I've stayed at red roof inns while traveling for work and it wasn't always the most pleasant experience. However the St Clair totally turned my opinion about the brand from unpleasant to I would definitely stay there again. read more

I reserved my hotel room online through the actual company website. Booking was user-friendly. I was under the impression I booked and paid. I arrived at the hotel and they asked for my payment. I still have to double-check this transaction. The hotel looks like the picture, but the photographer was on his game, meaning he made those pictures look dreamy. The hotel looked exactly the picture but not really. The Lobby, the front desk area, and the rooms are micro-sized. It was explained to me it was because it was a boutique hotel. Yeah, I'm not convinced that in the description of a boutique hotel, that the size of the rooms are smaller. The actual number of rooms is smaller than a standard hotel property. Additionally a boutique offers special amenities, with this in mind considering the St. Claire this is laughable. The hotel was clean. Not sure about parking (we used Uber everywhere). Covid procedures preventing daily room cleaning. You were able to request fresh daily linen and towels. They were able to provide plastic ware. Our room was "deluxe" (insert air quotes) - mini-fridge and microwave. I have to say this - don't laugh - The sink is big enough to wash only one of your hands at a time. I think the sinks in my 1:12 scale miniature houses are bigger. The location was prime, middle of downtown and The Magnificent Mile. The staff was professional, not friendly but professional. I encountered a front desk concierge that was super helpful and one not so helpful. The front desk concierge was not helpful, she also wasn't forward-thinking or problem solver oriented. We were granted an early check-in -before 3 PM - which was VERY appreciated - we arrived early A.M. (Thank you so much) We were not granted late check out; I even offered to pay. I was told they don't offer late check-out and that the hotel was booked. I asked if housekeeping could clean our room last. The concierge said housekeeping checks every room out at noon, and then they clean. I explained that I was working and needed to stay a bit later. I asked what if I said what if I booked another night. She explained the accommodations needed to be completed by noon. They offered a room at full price, which is more than I paid per day initially. I ended up booking online through a third party - for a full night's stay. I left promptly at 3 PM the time I promised. With the state of the world and the suffering of the travel industry, which is now ramping back up, I would think, as a boutique hotel, returning customers and referrals would be key. I honestly think I could have been better accommodated. I will not return to this hotel ever again. I feel comfortable posting this review, because it is all truthful without being malicious, along with my off-the-wall humor. I agree with the reviewer who said this is a nicer motel. The beds are clean and comfortable and the room itself is fine, if not small, but the bathroom was a nightmare. There was hair that wasn't ours stuck in the cap of the complimentary shampoo bottle, hair that wasn't ours stuck in the fabric of most of the towels, blue and black pen ink stains on the towels, and one towel even had a weird yellow crusty stain. We had to call the front desk 3 times to get them to bring us new towels and at one point the toilet clogged, so we mentioned this in our calls to the front desk about this as well. It wasn't until the third call at 7:45pm on a Saturday that they informed us that the maintenance workers had left *for the weekend* so our options were to see if they had a new room open to move us to, or keep flushing to try and fix it. Not sure what kind of hotel doesn't have a maintenance crew on-site for clogged toilets on the weekends. The walls are also paper thin so we could hear everything our neighbors said. read more

I have stayed at this hotel NUMEROUS times when it was the red roof and when it transferred to the st Clair ......i stayed at the location yesterday i came into town to check on my Ill mother i was out late Sat night and kinda slept in i was awaken at 1215 pm by some belligerent young Afro American young lady threatening to call the police on Me...the young lady told me she was going to call the police on me if o wasn't out the room in 5 mins i explained her that i just woken up and that i was going to extend my reservation and that if she gave me one sec it would be taken care of ...the young lady preceded to tell me that if i didn't check out now the police. Would be called and hung up in my face....i went down to the front desk to address situation and when i arrived at the front desk i asked the young lady was she the one who just contacted my room she replied yes stood up and instantly called and the police as if i was irate or had threatened her ... i explained to her again that i wanted to stay over and that i was a reoccurring guest and I've never experienced such hostility over a situation especially with it only being 20 mins "at this point" after check out she continued to be extremely rude and she got on her cell phone and called the police and walked to the back room and shut the door ... i asked this lady for her manager number 3 times she ignored me and told me to get the "fuck out her face" I've never in my life have experienced such rudeness and disrespect from a establishment .... the house keeper that were present during the situation were even shocked with the encounter and informed me to contact corporate ..when i called back may 4 the following morn to speak with the general manager about my experience i was sent to his vm before i was even done leaving the vm i was called back by the hotel when i answered it was the young lady i had the experience with telling me she recognizes my voice and number and ain't no damn manager to speak with ! I'm completely floored in regards to this situation and to poor more salt on the wounded i was called back a second time being told that i had a restraining order on me not to call the hotel and that If i called asking to speak to the manager again that the police would be contacted ‼i can't make this up ... the Afro American young ladies at this establishment were the nastiest piece of work I've ever experienced in my life and it really saddens me how ignorant people can be especially when you're paying your money read more

This hotel is a great value for the location and I wouldn't hesitate to book here again. In fact I would stay here over the intercontinental and peninsula which we also stayed at during our trip. The front desk was very friendly. I forgot her name but she made my family feel welcome from the moment we stepped in the door. Although they said we could get early check in, when we arrived no rooms were available on a Tuesday. We went out to eat, walked around a bit and came back and still the room wasn't available for another hour. We were upgraded to a room with a mini fridge and although small, was just what we needed as a family of three. We called down for more towels and toilet paper and they graciously brought some up. They even gave us charmin TP which was an exciting upgrade from the typical newspaper TP that most hotels have. Overall the friendly ness of the front desk associate side this stay impeccable. We stayed here for our babymoon in Chicago. I chose the hotel based on location, price and the fact that it was refundable. Was it glamorous? No. Was it safe, clean and right in the middle of where you want to be? Yes. Honestly those are the only 3 things I care about. It is recently renovated so everything is modern and fresh. The elevator situation isn't ideal. Our room was not ready until after 4 but they held our luggage so it was fine. When we came back after 4, along with everyone else, there was a giant line and quite a wait for the elevators. Both were working but they're barely above European-sized. We received a discount for the pub across the street which was good. The coffee in room was decent. The bed was very comfortable which was important to a 7-month pregnant woman and I was grateful it was feather-free! I usually have to ask for that! The bathroom was nice. The room was small, but I've stayed in smaller in Europe and NYC. Unless you plan on spending your whole trip in your room, I would recommend this hotel. read more

As good as it gets! One of the best things about the rooms; no musty, stained, disgusting carpet; all floor!! Everything is clean, and the beds are comfortable. I had a problem one of the times I stayed (billing issue), the manager fixed it right away, and even refunded the charge for the room. Great Location! Stayed here in November for the Holiday Parade. The rooms were awesome and clean, the front desk was friendly and the beds were comfortable (I generally can't sleep anywhere but home)! Arrived about 11 AM and left our car with Valet to go walk around, the next day after Checking out, we were able to comeback and pick up our car after going to lunch and what ever else we wanted to do, which was really great because I would have had NO IDEA where else to park. It's Wonderful place to stay if you are looking to explore Chicago. Rooms are a little tight, probably not the place if you are claustrophobic.. but there was 4 of us in the room. My 7 year old was obsessed with our room and kept referring to it as our apartment, and anytime we went out to get food she want to take it back to our "apartment" and eat, which is crazy because she always wants to eat at a restaurant. My 15 year old loved it because it reminded her of being in another country because it was so compact. I feel I should also mention, I felt the area was very safe.. as that was important for me, when going downtown Chicago with my kids. read more

The staff was fantastic!! However I would like to express the unfortunate event that occur during my stay, while having great staff hold my bags prior to my check in and after my check out, sadly I was robbed during those time frames. I did not notice within a right timeframe as I thought I had stayed somewhere safe and did not have to worry about such thing. It is really unfortunate to have come across this after I arrived back home, and really makes me think that some staff were extremely nice and helpful but was it all an act.. I honestly do not know, but from someone that has travel frequently and have never come across this really puts into perspective that "you are never too safe". I really wish I could have left a great review, as my safe overall was good. But I think is fair for any future guess to know so they can take caution when being in this type of environment. read more

Me and my girlfriend flew in from STL for a weekend getaway, and we booked through Expedia, we paid extra for a standard king with a view. Upon arrival, we check in, get up to our room, and it was a double queen and the room wasn't much smaller. We went back down to the lobby to explain this was not the room we had booked. We were told the room we booked was no longer available. We had explained our confusion and frustration. The front desk employee had stated that he would just cancel someone else's reservation and that would enable us to get the room we originally paid extra for. When we get up to the room, it had a strong odor of marijuana, and on top of that, the "view" we were promised through the pictures when booking, was a dark alley, where it was nothing but homeless people. It wasn't jusy our room that contained the smell, but it was the entire floor/hotel. I do understand that marijuana is legalized here, but it's not something you want to constantly have to smell. Every other hotel I've stayed at in chicago has never smelled that way. Really disappointed, and wouldn't reccommend this place to anyone. read more

This hotel was absolutely perfect in all ways. I have had a lot of experiences with hotel staff due to working in the industry for a very long time, and the people working the front desk were all so patient, kind, and had great attitudes. They allowed us to check in early (10am!!!) with no hassle when our original check-in time was 4pm, and when we checked out, they allowed us to keep our bags tagged in a secured room throughout the day until we were ready to get our bags to go to the airport at almost 4pm. The room we stayed in was clean, nicely renovated, and also the room had 2 king beds which is so rare to find!!! It was perfectly sized for 3 girls with a lot of luggage and never felt cramped. The water pressure and heat in the shower was amazing. Everything felt very professional,nice, and safe. The location of this hotel is incredible. It's right in the middle of the Magnificent Mile and nestled right in between 2 Starbucks locations, a Dunkin Donuts, and within a block of several different food locations as well. It was an easy walk from Millenium Park and everything else along the mile and we did LOTS of shopping! It's less than a block off of Michigan Ave. which was great for us, 3 young women, who really didn't want to be walking too far from the main road alone at night! With that being said, we never felt unsafe which was a big deal for us. This hotel was a perfect fit for us, and I really can't wait to stay here again in the future. read more
