I'm a hot chocolate lover and I try it everywhere I go, so we came to Hotel Chocolat to check theirs out. The place is incredible. Chocolate displays all over the walls, I was able to see their whole lineup like a little chocolate showroom. Tons of options, almost too many to choose from. The lady working there was really nice. Since it was my first time, I asked for recommendations and she suggested the dark hot chocolate and the hazelnut. I got both. The dark hot chocolate is exactly what it sounds like, but in a good way. Very deep cocoa flavor, bold and intense. Not sweet at all. It hits you with that rich, slightly bitter chocolate taste first, then it smooths out. It feels like pure cacao melted down. Definitely more of a "wake you up" kind of drink, especially if you like dark chocolate. The hazelnut one is the complete opposite side of the spectrum. Super smooth, creamy, and instantly more sweet and comforting. It honestly tastes like melted Ferrero Rocher in a cup. You get that nutty hazelnut flavor right away. Enjoyed this new addition to the Armitage shopping district. We went to check out all the different chocolate options this Black Friday and were pleasantly surprised by all the different options they have. They have been creative with their chocolates - everything from advent calendars to penguin cartoon molds and lots of gift packs for the holidays. We did indulge in their signature hot chocolate. I had the dark chocolate peppermint and it was delicious. Smooth and creamy but not too sweet. Great service as well. It was busy but all the staff were friendly and helpful. read more

The white chocolate matcha tasted like regular matcha and the hot chocolate mint was the best but I've had better. The pastry was ok but kind of hard. Would have been better if they could toast it. I was lucky enough to have stayed at Hotel Chocolat in St. Lucia where they get their beans and it was there that I was introduced to the whole concept of the "velvetizer". But, I digress. The chocolate here is whole different level. The drinks are delicious. I feel like the skim milk makes them not as sweet. The croissant was good as well. I can't say the service is fast but I'm assuming it takes a while to make the hot chocolate. There are usually a lot of workers but I don't think its very efficient. Also, service is not that friendly. I think there is room for improvement when it comes to service and ambiance as I didn't feel like there was much of one. read more

Lovely, chic storefront! We had the cube chocolatine which were beautifully laminated but clearly not from today. We had the chocolate shot with them and it made it better. The iced drinking chocolate is not as good as the hot chocolate in my opinion. I have a velvetizer at home and regularly order chocolate flakes from them. 70% is best in my opinion but there are other decent options, too. Do you need a velvetizer? Prob not but it's a fun splurge. It's like a milk frother but the whisk covers the more surface area. The wall of chocolat was fun to explore and it was difficult to choose just 3. They have chocolates and bars divided into categories on that wall. The staff was polite and attentive. They offered samples and advice on choices. I wish I lived closer I would come often for a treat. They serve metric coffee which I didn't have here, but I suspect would make a nice cup. read more

It might have been the thick looking chocolate whipped cream with the chocolate shavings pictured that made me order one instead of a hot chocolate. Bye bye foxtrot! I have been so excited for Hotel Chocolat to open up on Armitage. It's in a great location with lots of street parking out front and also easy to walk to if you're in the LP area. We walked into a large store front with a good amount of seating around the corner. The sales associates were friendly and we tried several different samples. I visited the Lincoln Park location of Hotel Chocolat. From the outside, it looked premium and classy, so I really wanted to give it a try. They specialize in chocolates and had some samplers out when I walked in. The samples were delicious. I ended up buying an assorted chocolate box and loved it so much that I finished it within a couple of days. The server was kind and helped me decide on the box I should get :) Excited to try more, I went back for their drinking chocolate. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. It didn't come close to the quality I've had at Max Brenner or even L.A. Burdick. They also serve ice cream, though I didn't try it this time. We stumbled upon Hotel Chocolat by chance. I have heard of it but did not know it was on Armitage. My kids and I had just finished our drinks at La Colombe and decided to come in and see what the shop had to offer. Right when you walk in you see the cafe to your left and to the right is all the packaged chocolate. The cafe has drinks you can order as well as baked goods and pastries. As you go in further you see a wall of magnificent chocolate. They have a really great variety and even had the chance to sample a few pieces. Further into the shop is even more chocolate and an area to sit. Since we were already so full, we made a promise to come back and try the cafe, bakery items and of course the chocolate. read more
