There are over 20 flavors, topping options, and cones! All the ice cream we got was delicious, SO heavy, and sweet. We came here on a Friday night around 7pm. There was no one inside when we got there but it slowly got busy. They are very fast at scooping and patient. You can even try samples. There were three of us, one got a small cup of chocolate, one an affogato in a waffle cone, and one of us the espresso chocolate brownie in a small cup. They were all delicious!
I scream for ice cream!! You'll be screaming waiting in line forever though Lines are long but worth it. Gotta come early or just get a pint from grocery stores. If you are going to stand in line, don't waste your time getting one little scoop. Get two. I didn't think these kids had a skill on scooping ice cream. I literally felt my second scoop was cheated. Ya'll need to put some elbow grease and be generous. Give me a nice big scoop if I'm paying $7 for 1 scoop. I got the mango sticky rice non vegan. It was delicious! I like how light and refreshing it was. The pumpkin cheesecake was good too. Kind of weird it was in season right now. I tasted the cheesecake in every bite. Needs a bit more cinnamon. Quick and go. There is no hangout here.
We tried the Marionberry Cheesecake / Mango Sticky Rice / Earl Grey Tea. Interesting variety of flavors that taste as advertised, nice creamy consistency, and big portions. Quality is more or less on par with Jeni's. No issues with service. Order to-go only.
Prices are certainly on the high side ($8 for 1 scoop) but I suppose that's to be expected of a gourmet ice cream shop like Van Leeuwen. I sampled the mango sticky rice (which was great and I may get that next time) but ended up going with a scoop of the earl grey. It was delicious; they did a solid job capturing the tea fragrance in the ice cream. The space is small so be prepared to buy your ice cream and enjoy it while walking around, which works out nicely since the location is right in the center of lively Wicker Park. Extra points for the friendly staff as well, who happily bounced from one customer to the next (it was busy when I went given it was on their opening day).
I had the single best ice cream cone of my life the other day. The honeycomb ice cream so insane. Then they put it on a fresh, warm waffle cone, I got it w rainbow sprinkles. I laughed maniacally bc of how good this ice cream cone was. The workers are so nice and helpful and don't get mad if people ask to try too many flavors lol inside is very tight, and could use a second door, but is inviting for an ice cream shop. Don't try to park near this location, it's a nightmare at the 6 corners. The line goes out the door anytime it's a lil warm out so keep that in mind!

The shop doesn't have any seating, so be prepared to take your ice cream for the road. On opening weekend, there were consistently lines out the building and around the block. The employees were super friendly and efficient throughout. I sampled the limited edition Malört flavor before ordering the Italian hazelnut and marionberry cheesecake scoops. The ice cream, as always, was so flavorful and really tasted like it's made with high quality ingredients. I loved the pieces of cheesecake crumble and chunks of hazelnut in the scoops. The Malort was... authentic to its namesake. Can't say I recommend purchasing, but it's worth tasting for the novelty. Will absolutely be back soon and highly recommend! I have always been a fan of Van Leeuwen and I was excited to see them open a shop in Chicago. We decided to try the new malort flavor. The queue was huge but fast moving. The place is small. The malort icecream was so pungent, omg, felt like we took a malort shot. The icecrema flavor did justice to malort for sure. We also tried the hazelnut flavor to balance out the bitterness of the malort and it was very delicious. I will be back to try out more flavors!
Sooo good! We got 2 scoops- dark chocolate and coffee affogado. Visited on a Monday evening and the line was short. There is no sitting space so you have to just grab and go. It's a little pricey for ice cream (1 scoop = $7.95) but it's very good!!!
We tried the infamous Malort icecream as well as Italian Hazelnut. The Malort was just how we expected it to be, bitter and made all of us feel disgusted with each bite haha! My friends and I like to try the weirdest things in ChiTown so it was a good experience to try it, but definitely not getting it again! Italian hazelnut on the other hand was good, creamy, not overly sweet and just perfect with chunks of hazelnut!
They finally opened a Van Leeuwen in Chicago. I was excited to try all the flavors. Unfortunately when I went, they were out of many of the flavors and the shipment didn't come in yet. The staff were friendly and let us sample different flavors. Nonetheless, I tried the chocolate ice cream and topped it with almond. The almonds give a great texture. They are high quality ingredients and it was a great place for dessert. I need to come back to try other flavors. Hopefully they won't be sold out next time.
A friend mentioned that this New York chain was opening in Chicago, and I really wanted to try their special Malort ice cream. The line was long, and I couldn't believe it was already sold out by the afternoon on a weekend! The shop is small and located in Wicker Park. My mom and I ended up getting the strawberry shortcake sundae and passionfruit sorbet ice cream. The strawberry one was so good. I definitely need to go back to try the Malort ice cream next time.
Definitely on the pricier side for ice cream but highly recommend the Mango Sticky Rice flavor! We went a few weeks ago and also got the Malört and Honeycomb. If you decide to get the Malört flavor I recommend adding the hot fudge and salted caramel.
If you like the Van Leeuwen ice cream pints you get at the grocery store, this ain't the same. None of the flavors I tried stood out at all, they all fell flat. I felt rushed to pick a flavor since the line started building up behind me so I picked mint chip and I regretted it. It was super grainy. All the other flavors I tried weren't flavorful at all and had no special taste. They genuinely were giving nothing. I wanted to leave without getting anything but felt bad. My boyfriend and I both got one scoop each in a cup and it was like $19. That's an expensive tiny scoop! Don't betray Jeni's and choose local shops instead. I won't be going back here.

Went here to cap off a long, summer day and reward myself with a couple scoops. The staff were polite and patient - providing samples when asked. The ice cream was good quality, although very sweet. Prices were on the steeper side. Given other options, I wouldn't go out of my way for Van Leeuwen, but it's a solid choice if you're in the area. read more
Came to Van Leeuwen in Wicker Park on a late Wednesday night and didnt have to wait long. Its a small place, you order to take out and theres 1 person serving customers I tried the strawberry matcha and mango sticky rice flavors, both of which were good. Refreshing and light, not too sweet, and unique. I appreciated that they had a vegan option for nearly all the available flavors. I ultimately ordered a Sicilian pistachio milkshake, which was pretty pricey but comprised of 3 scoops with multiple milk options. Stopped here at around 8.30PM on a Saturday. We had to wait for about 20 mins. Once inside, they do not rush you to order quickly. They let you taste as many as you'd like. I got the Italian hazelnut (loved it!) and dark chocolate brownie fudge (good, but not great). My partner got the pistachio sundae, it was delicious! read more
