Thanks to fellow Yelper Chris K of Durham for pointing this place out to me. Stopped in today and…read moreenjoyed an excellent Southern style Chili Dog ($1.99), loaded with great tasting, meaty chili, a neon red weiner, and a soft, gooey bun - it don't get muchbetter than that if you love your dogs. Also chewed on a very, very good cafe type Cheeseburger (something under $4) - hand formed, very tasty beef, nice fresh bun, plenty of cheese, and a decent slice of tomato. There is a small grill in a room behind the counter of a convenience stor that sells Citgo gas. They offer a variety of usual sandwiches, including a sausage dog, Hursey's BBQ, a thick Bologna Sandwich ($2.99), some lite breakfast fare, and even Hursey's Brunswick Stew. Great service from friendly folks. I'll be back. It is just up the road from Dickey-Do's BBQ.

I decided to get the combo dog, which is cheese and chili and had onions added on. It's an NC style neon red dog that had a good chili on it with the meat in somewhat large chunks, but as you can see from the picture, it's a bit on the greasy side. Still good, though and the onions had a bite to them. For $1.99 it was good eats. Served old school in a tiny paper bag with just one napkin. If I'd known I'd have asked for more, but managed to keep it all together, even eating it in the car. They also have an old timey Coke machine where you pull the leaver towards you. Very well blended!

Thanks to this Pilot Travel Center for introducing me to Haw River, North Carolina. I never knew…read moreHaw River, a town which is located in Alamance County, existed until stopping to get gas here. It's named after the nearby Haw River which you cross over when riding on I-40/I-85. This Pilot is located just off the aforementioned interstate, exit 150. It's roughly halfway between the Triad and the Triangle. Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers (same company) are more like truck stops and comparable to Love's Travel Stops, as opposed to QuikTrip and Sheetz stores, with convenience stores that offer much more than just refreshments. Oftentimes, fast food and other chain restaurants will be on-site. In the case of this Pilot, there's a Dairy Queen and Wendy's attached to the store. Across the street, there's a Flying J with a Denny's connected to it. I just stopped to fill up on gas on my way to Chapel Hill from High Point. The gas station at this Pilot has eight pumps. I used pump #4 and it was in good condition, from the screens to the handle to the buttons. The paper towel dispenser was stocked and my paper receipt printed out clearly. The price of the gas (premium) was not as good as the prices I paid immediately preceding this fill-up at places like the Costco in Durham, QTs in Georgia and South Carolina, and a Kroger in Georgia. Compared to those places, the price for premium gas here was anywhere from $0.13 to $0.39 higher per gallon. At the same time, I didn't feel that the price was unreasonable, just more on the pricey side. I'd stop here again if I had to. This is Pilot store #6955.

At 7pm on a weekday, the few things remaining on the roller grill were not at all appealing. But the rest of the store including the hot display was stocked. Plenty of cold sodas, water, beer and such. Shelves of snacks of both salty and sweet variety. A display of auto convenience items as well. This 7-Eleven is just off the interstate and is quite convenient. The clerk who rang up my sale was pleasant. [Review 2172 of 2024 - 3829 in North Carolina - 23191 overall]

Something familiar from my youth that wasn't in Raleigh. I remember when I was in college, late at night after an evening dancing, we could always go "gulping" at the "sev". Sigh. Ah youth. From the first time I stopped in at this location, I have made up my mind that this one s where I will always get my gas. The location is perfect, on the way to 85. The pump area is always clean with the windshield cleaner always filled. The store itself has some surprises inside as well. It's just a treat that is less painful with the discounts given if you sign up for their rewards program. Stop by, get a gulp or slurpee, fill up and have a bright day!
