Big Mouth Bass (Garlic flavor, less spicy) with -Mung Bean Noodles -Beancurd Stick -Chinese cabbage -Kelp

Shirley L.

Came by on a Friday night and it was pretty busy but luckily I joined the waitlist so I didn't have to physically wait there. First off the atmosphere was pretty nice, music playing in the background and big screen playing the MTV in the back of the store. The menu was had a few interesting cold dishes and also skewers on top of the fish menu. I was disappointed with the fish as it wasn't very flavorful, there was garlic that was minced but not enough. There was also a bunch of garlics that was in a single garlics from the cover but barely added any flavor. The service was great because the staff came by to ask us how was the food and we briefly mentioned it's lacking in flavor so he brought the fish back in and had the more garlics added. The flavor was so not as flavorful as I was hoping which is a personal preference, it felt like something was missing. I usually go to Xun Yu Si Kao which is a bit more rundown but makes their spicy fish very garlicky. It was a good experience but the food was not good enough for me to want to come back.

Very attentive staff and service and food comes out pretty quickly after ordering. Ordering is done on an ipad but the staff will come and confirm the order with you, continuously clear plates, help put jackets in a plastic bag (like they do at hotpot spots) and even offer hair ties for the girlies. Ordered the grilled fish and easily one of the better grilled fish spots that I've tried (I've been to three other places before). The fish was a decent size (the big mouth bass), not too small, and between two people, we had no issues demolishing this fish and could've easily eaten another order hahhh. Still very shareable though, especially if you order other items too. We got the "special sauce" flavor which wasn't spicy at all and was really good, though towards the very end, it started to get sweeter. Add on's were especially generous - we opted for beansprouts and the mung bean noodles and the noodles felt never ending. Also ordered some skewers, they were a bit on the pricey side but the meat was pretty good for the lamb.

Everything here is pretty good I would be wary of the bones in the fish eat it slow if you don't have experience with bone in fish. But flavor wise it's all pretty good I would recommend.

This place is packed even really late on a weekday! The Artic clams appetizer is one of my favorites! The green pepper sauce it comes in is very addicting. The tofu pudding sauce is spicy and tingly. The tofu itself is very tender and just melts in your mouth. The kumquat tea is a great way to cool down from the spice.

Everything was delicious but didn't stand out to me. There's a ton of places on 8th Ave with the same dishes with larger portions. I was disappointed in how small portions were for the price tag. We ordered two large fishes. The fishes were not good but the seasoning and soup were great (The fish had very little meat in them and didn't taste as good as the garnishes) The stand out factor was the garnishes which is crazy! This isn't a spot I would be a regular customer since it was mediocre and expensive.

This is the perfect place to go to in the middle of a cold winter night. We made the trek from Manhattan to deep Brooklyn for some spicy szechuan fish and it did not disappoint at all. The fish was tender and flakey and the spicy level was absolutely perfect. The portions were also insanely big. It has a cool Asian ambiance here as classic Asian songs are played on this large screen projector in the back of the restaurant. The service was very good as they explained to us the differences between all the fish fillet options.

Garlic Eggplant and a free appetizer they serve as you sat on your table (broad beans, sunflower seeds, and peanuts)

This was my first time coming here with my family and I will definitely be back! There were so many good flavors and types of fish to choose from, from tomato to mala fish. The ways to customize your own pot of fish (or other seafood) are endless. I definitely recommend the buffalo fish, it was very soft and barely had too much bones. You had a tablet and could order to your liking which I thought was pretty cool because I got a visual look at how everything looks like. Garlic eggplant tastes like a typical garlic eggplant would. The servers were pretty nice and helpful as this was my first time. Overall enjoyed it. I definitely recommend coming in a (semi) big group because one fish was wayy too much for 3 people! Extra ++ to the free herbal jelly dessert at the end

I came around 7 PM today and the wait was a little over an hour, which is fine since I was told it is a must come store. First time here, and I was impressed by the interior mood setting. Once seated, they ask you if you want to put your jacket in a bag so the smell doesn't get on it. They also offered a hair tie as I have long hair. The food came out pretty fast despite the fact that it was busy at the time. We also got a free appetizer while we wait for our food. You get a tablet to decide what you want and the spice level. The service was good and they cleared our plates pretty quickly. You also get free dessert at the end (grass jelly). It is a pretty loud place, but the food was worth it!

This places was BUSY and for good reason. When you walk in, it's a dark atmosphere and shining lights as if you went to karaoke. It's in a very weird area but it doesn't really matter that much. The food itself was so good. We ordered a lot more than pictured but we ate it before I could even get a picture. I don't know if I was just hungry or what but this food felt like it was on another level. I constantly crave for this place and I've only been there once. I have no complaints, this place is top notch. Service was quick and it is very optimal for those who speak Chinese. I was told by my momma and grandma that they went here often to eat, and from that, although this place may be a bit loud and crowded, it's perfect for anyone wanting a delicious meal at night. Not only that, it was very easy for them to communicate since there wasn't a language barrier. I'd come back to New York just to get another taste of the chicken in chili sauce.

Amazing flavour and amazing service! Can't recommend this place enough! This place specializes in their 烤鱼, they have a good variety of fish to choose from and various soup bases. You can choose to add veggies, noodles and etc to the pot as well. My boyfriend and I ordered the striped bass with spicy tofu pudding soup base. The flavour was absolutely amazing! Really reminds me of my hometown sichuan :) also note the portions are massive, one of the fish dish can comfortably serve 3-4 people. The waiters were super friendly and we also got a bowl of grass jelly in milk tea as dessert :)

Samantha X.

came here with my boyfriend and parents and we had a blast! We ordered 1 fried fish, spicy garlic flavored with mung bean noodle, cauliflower, enoki mushroom and fungus (you can choose as many toppings as you want for about 4 dollars/topping) and pickled pepper bullfrog - which came with toppings that you could not pick. There were lots of bones in the fish and so I thought the bullfrog was easier to eat. My parents and boyfriend don't really like things too spicy so we asked for less spicy for both dishes and they accommodated it and the two dishes were very bearable for everyone. The fish and bullfrog came out super quickly which was great because we were very hungry. The portions are huge and we brought home lots of leftovers. It's pretty dark inside the restaurant and lots of seating! The waitresses came by often to change out our plates (with bones) and also we got complimentary grass jelly dessert which was super refreshing after a heavily seasoned meal.

Sea bass in two flavors (spicy garlic and black pepper oyster sauce) with soft tofu, enoki mushrooms, lotus root, and Chinese cabbage.

Wendy W.

The food at Hot Space was great, but the phenomenal service is the reason I'm giving this place five stars. The roasted scallop, which came in a large shell, was sliced up and mixed with vermicelli noodles and garlic. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The roasted frog was alright. The meat was flavorful, but it needed some kind of glaze or sauce. I really liked the sea bass, which was the star of the show. We ordered it with two flavors (spicy garlic and black pepper oyster sauce), along with soft tofu, enoki mushrooms, lotus root, and Chinese cabbage. It arrived in a large split pan that the waiters kept heated. The spicy garlic flavor didn't have much garlic taste, mostly spice, but I loved the black pepper oyster sauce. The black pepper was quite strong though, so if that's not your thing, avoid this flavor. The enoki mushrooms, cabbage, and tofu were also delicious. I wish the lotus root had been cooked down and softer. Now, onto the service. First of all, we got a bunch of free items. Since we got two flavors for our fish, we received a free chilled dish of tofu and preserved eggs in oyster sauce and sesame oil. This was sooo good. Probably my favorite dish of the night. The sauce was simple yet addicting, and it even made me enjoy preserved eggs, which I normally dislike. I ordered passion fruit green tea and they gave us plum iced tea and kumquat lemon iced tea on the house. At the end of our meal we also received dessert bowls of grass jelly in coconut/soy milk. Our waiters kept checking on us and asking how everything was. They seemed genuinely interested in finding out how I knew about the restaurant and making sure we enjoyed our food. That level of care and courtesy really makes Hot Space stand out, and it's a big part of the reason I'll be back.

Kevin Z.

We ordered a roasted fish, some seafood platter, a few skewers, and marinated beef. Everything was great except for the fish. I would recommend getting fewer add-ons in the fish as they pretty much disappear. Vegetables in the fish would absorb too much of the spice, rendering it too salty/spicy. On the contrary, I highly recommend the seafood dish. There's a good mix in there and it comes with vegetables included. The skewers were well-seasoned and reasonably priced. Waitstaff frequently changed our plates which was appreciated, and water was refilled too. They kept a close eye and turned on and off the flame for our dishes in good time. We had a jacket holder bag which appeared to work. The table was just a tad small if you have 6 people. Vibes were on the younger side.

I've been there twice and I can tell, the service and the food deserves five star review. It's the first time I am trying this restaurant, was thinking of trying some good spicy food but it's full of disappointment. Got the spicy fish but the fish is not fresh at all, it's very fishy even the spice can not cover the smell. The appetizer is not good too, we ordered the shredded potato and it's the worst one I've ever had so far. Only the fried rice is acceptable but not the best. The pricing over here is way over priced. Will consider coming back here a 2nd time. Btw, the service here is good that's what I think it worth the 1 star. read more

Try the fish, With traditional spice. As long as you are okay with bones, this dish will be right up your alley. The appetizers won everyone over. Came here a few times (around 4 times) and this place is never packed (at least when I go) Fist time I had spicy fish with stuffings and it was an interesting experience. You choose the type of fish you want, the level of spiciness and the toppings you want in your fish. The staff is very helpful so if you don't understand they can go over it with you and they review it before they send it to the kitchen. I've had a few of their appetizers but none was interesting to my taste. Their watermelon juice was good as well as their kumquat lemon ice tea. The fish comes out in a steaming plate where there is a small fire pit in the bottom. Flip the fish since there are more topping under the fish. I've had the sea bass and buffalo fish before. I prefer the sea bass more. It is spicy but I could have up the spice level but my friend can't eat too spicy so had so stay mild. In the end, they give you grass jelly as dessert. What I didnt like about this place was their karaoke area is quite loud and their bathroom is freezing cold with water every where inside. Still the same after coming her a few times. Overall, it's not a bad place to have Szechuan style fish hot pot. I would omit the appetizers. If you like fish and spicy food, give this place a try. Just hope the music isn't too loud and bathroom is in better condition. read more

I went here on a Sunday night, so it was particularly busy. The manager gave us an assorted nut appetizer while we were waiting(we were sitting at a table). He then preceded to place our orders ahead of time so when we were seated, our food came out right away. Every server was very very nice and one even went out of her way to take the corn off the skewer and poke in chopsticks instead. The manager also gave us an in the house duck appetizer. I went here mainly because I wanted spicy Chinese food, but I didn't realize this restaurant specializes in whole fish. It took me a little while to figure that out based on the menu, and sort of ordered blindly. I ended up with a whole bass that was cooked in the (spicy) sauce I chose, along with four other items (I chose tofu, enoki, cabbage, and rice cakes) that were cooked in the sauce with the fish as well. It came out in a whole heated tray (imagine hot pot, but a tray), and you just pick your food out of it. It was so delicious! I also ordered two sides (not realizing they were sides), eggplant and prawns, and they were also spectacular. My boyfriend and I shared and we both felt like we were going to pop by the time we finished everything. They gave us complimentary dessert, kind of like a grass jelly bubble tea soup, and offered us seconds (my boyfriend got a third serving). I can't complain at all. The only drawback is because of the style of this kind of food, I don't think it lends itself to takeout. They also don't have outdoor seating, I think because it doesn't work with the equipment they use to serve the fish. Therefore, we ate inside, which I was hesitant about given covid, but they are very clean and careful and the tables are far apart from one another. read more

I'm really upset about this restaurant, i went there by myself this afternoon. I ordered the bullfrog, clams, duck blood, tofu and beef . it was about 100 dollars in total.I was kinda rushing because I had to work after, so I didn't have time to finish my food, and then I asked the server for to go boxes, the server told me that I'm not able to pack the bullfrog and I have to finish it in the restaurant. The problem is I only ate 2 pieces of the bullfrog, half of them are on my plate, what pissed me off is the server told me to finish the food on my plate before I go, and she said she won't let me order the bullfrog if I can't finish it. We ordered Sliced Beef and Ox Tongue in Chilli Sauce which is the most famous dish in sezchuan restaurant. After the first bite I don't wanna go into it again! And the fish also tasteless. Don't miss Hot Space! What a great culinary experience. We ordered the sea bass in tofu sauce as recommended by the staff, with four vegetables (enoki mushrooms, kelp, potato, lotus root). The sauce the fish is cooked in is oily, rich, but to die for, your tongue will start tingling from the Szechuan peppercorns, but it hurts so good. Before the fish arrived, we tried a cold beef appetizer, and nibbled on fried broad beans (which they kindly gave me a cup full of to take home as they are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE lol). The grilled fish is best for a group, so we had a ton of leftovers. The waitstaff is very attentive and friendly and made the experience so worthwhile. Get thee to Hot Space! read more

Best BBQ fish in Brooklyn. You would want to try at least once to see yourself. You can choose the spicy level, type of fish and sides to go into the fish. Think hotpot but broiling fish. Fish varieties are good. You need at least 2lb of fish per order. I recommend go with large party to split it. For those who don't like spicy, avoid the pain and get the non spicy option. The only complain I have is the bathroom. It was super gross and one one was looking after it. I saw review that staffs were attentive. From my experience they are too attentive as one guy keep asking to refill my water every 5 minutes and interrupts group conversation. read more

The staff quickly opened up the downstairs space to accommodate us when the first floor got full. In addition, a big plastic bag is given to protect your clothes. The menu is pretty small since the main dishes are huge. The speciality here is SPICY. So most of the things on the menu are spicy and ranked by chili peppers. When you first sit down, you get this dish with peanuts and stuff (which they usually do at asian restaurants). The service is quick and they give you the appetizers you order within 5 minutes. The main dish is served on a hot plate that bubbles in front of your eyes. It keeps it warm and let the spiciness soak into the fish. We also got grilled oysters which were meh for $4 each. Wouldn't really recommend getting anything on the grilled part of the menu. At the end, they gave complimentary herbal (or maybe grass?) jelly. Would come again to try new stuff! read more

I just pulled up Apple Maps and searched for food nearby and Shan popped up. We were actually in the mood for some Asian cuisine so when we saw "Szechuan cuisine" in the description we knew we had to give it a shot. As soon as you walk in, your attention is pulled to the elegant cocktail bar and beautiful mural of a mountain behind it; I loved the vibe of the place. I ordered the pork dumplings in chili oil to start followed by Chungking Spicy Chicken and they were both delicious. The portion for the chicken was also quite shareable; I ended up needing help from the rest of the group to finish it . Also keep in mind this is an authentic Szechuan restaurant; when they say something is spicy, it's spicy! Luckily they have some refreshing options for dessert that feel quite soothing after all the spice. Not only was the food delicious but the hospitality was exceptional as well. For example, the staff was always smiling and quite attentive. If a glass of water was almost empty they would refill it without the need to ask. When I accidentally dropped my chopsticks they immediately picked them up and replaced them. All in all I had a great time and highly recommend this spot, definitely coming back!!

My friend had been here before and wanted to come again for her birthday. She made a reservation swiftly, and even though we were on time for our reservation, we still had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table when we arrived. The lobby was buzzing with people waiting to get seated. It was a little more peaceful in the dining room, with a small chatter. However, it progressively got louder during dinner, and I hate having to talk over other people to be heard, so I gave up on conversing during the meal. But that's fine since my mouth was busy enjoying all the good food. Dan dan noodles $14 : 5/5 stars I was disappointed by the small portions and the overall appearance, and while yes, it is small, don't judge a book by its appearance. It looks bland and dry but that's far from the truth. It was flavorful with a strong kick of spice and plenty of sauce. I would 100% get this again. Cucumber salad $14 : 5/5 stars $14 for just cucumbers is kind of absurd but I can't deny that it was delicious. Every restaurant does cucumber salad a little differently, and the ones at Antidote are coated in this creamy green sauce that made the app so hard to stop munching on. Not sure if I would get this again because of the price. Shredded duck fried rice $18 : 2.5/5 stars Honestly the pricing is really weird to me because what do you mean a cucumber salad is only $4 cheaper than a whole entree with protein? Anyway, I was looking forward to this interesting-sounding fried rice dish, but alas, I was not a fan. The duck was smoked and imparted a smoky taste to the whole dish that I did not enjoy. However, my friends loved it. Chestnut short ribs $30: 4/5 stars The ribs were fall-off-the-bone good but the chestnuts could've been a tad softer. There weren't that many ribs for $30. Youtiao shrimp $20 : 100/5 stars Literally the best item on the menu. It came with some pineapple pieces. It tastes just like the deep fried shrimp with walnuts and mayo at Chinese banquet meals. I truly think about this almost every day since I've had it. I can't wait to have it again.

Definitely a great way to introduce people to this cuisine who are hesitant about spiciness. For the main course, we shared the Ma Po Tofu. This item was marked with three chilis on the menu indicating it is the highest spice level here. It was definitely the spiciest item by far. You get the full mala effect with a bold pepper flavor plus big time numbing that lingers well after. It was my favorite dish but might not be for everyone. Rice is not included so be sure to add at least one order. They have a full bar with lots of house cocktails. Some wines and a handful of beers including draft options. I got to the restaurant late due to traffic and told the waiter about my intention to go the Music Center. Since I had never been there before, he immediately told me the specials and his recommendations. The food came out quickly. The presentation was great and the food was delicious. It could not have been better. They made a meal that could have been a rush into a pleasant dining event. AND as a bonus, they had a complementary shuttle to the Music Center. The driver was courteous and when the play was completed, he was waiting for us at the curb. Later, I met the owner who was as cordial and friendly as the restaurant. The reason I give five star is all because of their service. They have excellent service! The food I had tonight was Mala tofu fish, the waitress said the mala tofu flavor is their most popular one. It was spicy, and it was good spicy. I love it. And their four pounds fish is perfect for group of four people, it was not that fishy because of the strong flavor.
