Gf Mac and cheese, small
Alyssa M.

It's nice to find a place that caters to gluten-free folks with a dedicated fryer. The mac & cheese was decent, but I would've liked it if they maybe cooked it in such a way that there were some browned cheese areas. I liked the Asian honey mustard wings, though I was surprised that they were not yellow, lol. The mustard flavor was very subtle. I ordered a six pack of wings and they gave me seven, bonus. My husband was the one picking up the food, and when they asked him if he wanted the buffalo sauce mixed in with the fried cauliflower or on the side, he said mixed in. I found this to result in a very overwhelmingly strong buffalo sauce flavor. If I did it again, I would definitely order the buffalo sauce on the side.

Lot of good memories here, fried pickles are pretty fire. Tried three different flavors of wings this trip and all were solid

Hot Wings

We've had good experiences here in the past and have always enjoyed the food. But today we ordered for pick-up and I'm not sure if this because it was an hour before closing or what but the sauce on both our hot wings and bbq wings was chunky?? It didn't taste like it had gone bad or anything but it was a completely different texture than usual and not enjoyable. Disappointed :(

Delicious chicken wings. So good and amazing. Thank you to our lovely server Daphne for all her help and suggestions. Awesome ambiance, super cool vibe in there. Incredible and also delicious wings, buffalo flavor was scrumptious. 10/10, love it! Be back soon.

buffalo wing combo (w fries / drink, 6 pc or 9 pc)

The wings here are excellent, the cauliflower wings are a personal favorite of mine! They have a variety of sauces to choose from, buffalo and maple bacon are great, but be warned buffalo is fairly spicy It definitely has a kick to it but if you like realllly spicy, they have some hot sauces that will do the trick! Their appetizers are great too, fries are crisp and portions are nice. Customer service here is nice, employees are friendly and even during a rush the wait isn't too bad. It can definitely get busy here though so keep that in mind. Parking can be a hassle as well, however we just parked across the restaurant and there was no issue. Fairly quiet restaurant and there's booths, as well as tables outside too. You could definitely sit outside on a sunny say if that's your vibe, they have multiple set up! It's a pretty lax location, perfect for groups of friends or couples, families, really anyone who enjoys chicken wings.

Full chicken tender basket

I am not a wings girl, so it took me some time to want to come into Hot Mama's. We decided to stop by yesterday after a hike, and boy am I glad we did! I ended up ordering the full chicken tender basket (4 tenders) with the buffalo garlic sauce. I think these may be the best chicken tenders I've ever had and I've had my fair share of chicken tenders. They were perfectly juicy with a thin, flavorful crust. The garlic buffalo dipping sauce was also very good and the garlic gave it the right boost of flavor over traditional buffalo. My fiancé ordered the spicy fried chicken sandwich and said he really enjoyed it as well. Both his tots and my fries were crispy which is how I love them. His brothers shared 24 wings with 3 different wing sauces and said they were all great (unfortunately, I don't remember what they chose...). Staff was super friendly and brought out our food in no time. I also loved that they had outdoor seating both in front of the restaurant and off to the side. Parking was a bit difficult to find since they do not have a parking lot (that I know of), so we had to park a bit down the street in the residential area. I am already craving these again so I'm sure we'll be back soon!

Dirty Fries

We came here for lunch today, mainly because the wings are outstanding! This was the first time though that WE were here and able to dine in. The service is very friendly and engaging but I did find the music to be a bit loud, was difficult to chat. The dining room is comfortable enough with plenty of space at the tables, but they could probably remove half of the speakers or turn down the volume a bit. As for the food, it is still just as good as the last time we had it. I had to go back for the Spiced Maple Bacon Wings and dirty fries. The wings were coated with real bacon and maple syrup and is just a perfect blend of heat and sweet. The dirty fries... wow, I forgot those puppies have a little more heat than I remembered but are still fantastic! They come with a melted cheese sauce, bits of bacon and chopped green onion. The portions are so generous that two of us had to get take out boxes for the leftovers. We also got the pretzels with beer cheese sauce. They were fresh, warm and soft. The cheese sauce is addictive. The small house salad was a very fresh spring mix and was topped with roasted red peppers, red onions and chick peas. It was ordered with a tangy balsamic vinaigrette that met a need! The mac and cheese was stellar as it was a four cheese blend that was smooth and creamy, very flavorful and also very addictive! The chicken strips, again, that perfect crisp, moist meat and subtle heat flavor was very satisfying. The menu is extensive enough to make us want to return to try the BLT and burgers, but we keep getting hung up on the pretzels, mac and cheese, fries and especially those maple bacon wings. Yea, I think we're going to need an intervention to get past those items just so we can try the rest of the menu! 5 stars for the food 4 stars for the too loud speakers

L2R Fried cauliflower tossed in a wet raspberry habanero sauce. Fried cheese curds. Fried tempeh with dry lemon garlic.

New to the area and just kinda stumbled upon this place one Friday evening. Really glad I did. Server was very helpful. I asked for something spicy yet flavorful and she listed not one but three recommendations. I went with raspberry habanero and, without knowing it, it was exactly what I wanted! Probably would pair even better with blue cheese dipping but ya can't go wrong with ranching it up. Five stars for the vegetarian options! Cheese curds were also very gooood!

Ask the Community - Hot Mama's Wings

Where do you park?

There is plenty of street parking on Lawrence between 13th and 12th. You can also park across the street in Berg's parking lot in the evenings after they close at 6:00 but not before.

Are the wings gluten free?

Yes, all wings and sauces are gluten-free. Also, no gluten goes into our deep-fryers.

Note this meal was on Saturday, not Sunday Mother's Day brunch : -1145am appointment and promptly seated. We were told it will take about 40 minutes to get our food which is fine. - 1200 the wait staff finally came by and took our total order (food and drinks) -1210 water was finally brought to table -1220 four of 5 beverages came out. - 1235 final beverage delivered. There is zero engagement from anyone between these long waits. -1255 three meals delivered. One missing something. - 100 one of the remaining meals delivered - 110 final meal and apology that it would be comped. That's 1.5 hours to get breakfast food for 5 people. The menu was good but the execution by the kitchen was inconsistent. At that point we just wanted to finally get out of there. Sitting there with tap water after finishing your first round of coffee/drinks a long time ago and hoping someone ever returns is crazy. The location is great, menu well constructed, and it was clean and welcoming. If you are looking for a place to just sit around and talk to each other for a couple hours and maybe, just maybe get some food or service at some point then this is the place for you. The one positive note was the barista slinging coffee drinks. She was working her tail off the entire time and all the coffee drinks were great. If anyone had come to ask we likely would have ordered more while we waited.

There are restaurants that seduce you with promise, and others that test your patience before…read morerevealing their intent. Lion & Owl, on this particular morning, proved to be both--a place of evident talent, yet uneven discipline, where flashes of brilliance are offset by lapses that no serious kitchen should permit. Let us begin with the triumph. The buckwheat pancakes arrive not merely as breakfast, but as a composition. A stack of admirable loft and structure--evidence of a properly developed batter, handled with restraint and precision. The crumb is airy yet resilient, each bite yielding gently before dissolving into a delicate nuttiness inherent to buckwheat. A caramelized banana sauce pools generously, glossy and fragrant, its sweetness tempered by the cultured tang of crème fraîche. Toasted coconut chips scatter across the top like crisp punctuation, lending both aroma and texture. This is cooking that understands balance--sweetness checked by acidity, softness lifted by crunch, comfort elevated by technique. It is, quite simply, a five out of five dish. The kitchen, here, remembers what it means to nourish and delight. And then--alas--we encounter its counterpoint. The mushroom brioche toast, in conception, should be a study in harmony: buttery bread, earthy fungi, silken eggs, fresh greens. Yet the execution falters at its very foundation. The brioche--so essential, so central--is pushed past the threshold of caramelization into bitterness. In a bread so rich with butter and sugar, precision is everything; overcook it, and the entire structure collapses under a shadow of char. The garnish, too, feels careless--large stems of greenery draped without intention, rather than composed with purpose. It is a dish that looks promising from a distance but betrays its flaws upon inspection. A two out of five--a failure not of imagination, but of discipline. The brie and truffle macaron arrives as an afterthought--set aside, unannounced, uncentered, as though it were a spare utensil rather than a composed pastry. Presentation matters. It signals care. Here, there is none. And the macaron itself? A confection that should whisper with delicacy instead resists with age. The shell is hardened, the interior overly chewy--signs of time having passed unkindly. The flavor is confused: a sweet, almost vanilla shell encasing a mild, savory filling of whipped brie and timid truffle. Neither side asserts itself; neither yields to the other. It is neither dessert nor savory course, but a muddled compromise. A two out of five, and left unfinished--a silent verdict more damning than words. The mimosa, I am told, is bright and pleasing, though presented without flourish--a small omission, but telling in a restaurant aspiring to polish. A four out of five, competent yet unadorned. The pour-over coffee reveals a lighter roast profile: bright acidity at the fore, a nutty mid-palate, a gently lingering finish. It is, as you observed, "hipster coffee"--intentionally expressive, though perhaps too acidic for a more classical palate. On flavor alone, a three out of five. Yet the experience is marred by a most unforgivable intrusion: a hair in the initial cup. Such a thing should never reach a guest. Ever. And beyond the plate--there is service. Dishes arriving out of sequence. Eggs meant for one guest appearing with another's delayed entrée. A table divided, one diner finished while the other waits. Explanations that do not align with reality. Items placed without acknowledgment or intention. These are not minor stumbles; they are fractures in the very architecture of hospitality. The Verdict Lion & Owl is a restaurant caught between what it is capable of and what it consistently delivers. There is real talent in this kitchen--evident in the pancakes, in the conceptual ambition of the menu, in flashes of thoughtful composition. But talent without rigor is unreliable. And hospitality without coordination is hollow. For every moment of genuine pleasure, there is another of carelessness--overcooked bread, stale pastry, inattentive plating, lapses in cleanliness, and disjointed service. In the end, one must judge the whole, not the highlights. Overall score: 2 out of 5. A restaurant with promise--undeniably--but one that must remember that excellence is not achieved in moments. It is achieved in consistency, in care, and in respect for the guest at every stage of the meal. Until then, Lion & Owl remains... a place that almost is.

Busy but they had a table for us. Very nice decor, rotating menu. We had the buckwheat pancakes with caramelized bananas, dates, and pineapple syrup which was sweet but not overly so since the pancakes underneath were not touched by the syrup ended up being a really nice balance. Bacon was like a cross between pork belly and bacon (very thick) but really tasty. Breakfast Sando was good with in-house ground pork and a nice aioli. We also tried the savory macarons (Brie and truffle) which are delicious. Creamy and a tad sweet. Not too much truffle. Coffee was a bright tangy pour over-not my favorite type but some people really like that style. Oh, and we had a blood orange mimosa which was really good Overall an excellent experience! Definitely going to again when we are in town!

The new table was much better - no smell and it was next to a heater so it was nice and cozy. The outdoor patio is pretty cute and the fresh air was nice! I have a soy allergy so I had to ask the waitress for an allergen list to make sure I would be okay. They were very nice and accommodating and told me what was and wasn't safe to eat. I ended up getting the focaccia with white bean paste, something I was skeptical of but really liked! The bread was super delicious and the bean paste was well-seasoned. The little slice of lemon it came with was a great topper for it all too. I would definitely get it again! I also got the sparkling lavender lemonade and it was so so good. It was perfectly balanced and I couldn't stop drinking it. The food was all pretty affordable which I appreciated. Lunch and drinks for two people was about $35. They don't do tipping here, they actually pay their employees a livable wage which is fantastic. They have a pay it forward program you can donate cash to instead, it goes towards breakfast for people in need. The employees seemed happy and were very friendly. They seemed to really enjoy working here which is always a good sign. I will definitely be back here. The people are friendly and the food is delicious.
