First time at this HopCat location, but not my first rodeo. The beer list is still stellar. Food quality remains consistent with previous visits, and it's been a number of years. The fries are still delicious and addictive. HopCat has its priorities in line! The service was a lot of overhearing an employee occupied with some boy drama and other employees consoling her. HopCat HopCat HopCat. We keep hearing that they have the BEST food, and the most delicious "chronic" fries. Is it "crack" fries? Perhaps both?! How about none!! Nothing we had was epic or even that good. The service was meh. The food was meh. They forgot cheese on my son's plain cheeseburger and just slapped a cold piece on and didn't even melt it. No love with any of the food. No balance of flavors. The fries were not good... just pepper heavy. My daughter wouldn't eat her grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup saying she didn't like the seasoning, (though I thought it was tasty). Everything was disappointing especially my ancho chicken bowl that had less than a breast of chicken, jalapeño heavy and barely any avocado. Talk about cheap! Are we coming back to give this restaurant another chance? Yeah... no. My son was getting married and nearby Zeeland, and I needed to find a rehearsal dinner location. We live in Ohio, so I was not familiar with the area. We started doing research and saw that HopCat in Grand Rapids had a separate seating area for larger groups. We liked the fact that they offered a taco bar option, as the bride to be needs gluten-free food. The weekend we were looking at was the start of Art prize in Grand Rapids, so we didn't want to compete with the crowds, and reached out to the Holland location. This location does not have a separate seating area for larger groups, but the manager was super accommodating and created one long table for the 35 of us. He set up a side area for the taco bar, plus the additional appetizers and desserts that we ordered. Throughout the whole process, the staff was very accommodating, and the night of the event, a Friday night, the staff handled us with ease. Everyone was very happy with the food options, and I was grateful for such a successful dinner. Everything was spectacular from start to finish. Our consummate and incredible waitress Lily was so helpful and knowledgeable of the food items and gave amazing recs. The ambiance was so fun elevated but the food was so accessible. The Brussels sprouts made fans out of people I was with who were very hesitant toward the idea of Brussel Sprouts. Our apps were their boneless wings and cheese curds. Boneless wings were your typical wing shape. Cheese curds were your non-typical square shape. Boneless flavor? Nashville hot. Curd flavor? Cheese. Curds came with Bloody Mary aoli. Would absolutely induce this in a non-legal way. Forgot to take a picture of the apps. They were unstoppable. Would absolutely order three more of these. Each. I ordered my villain origin story meal, Nashville hot chicken sandwhich and "cosmic" fries. We have to call them cosmic fries and NOT crack fries because they changed the name in 2019 due to crack fries being an insensitive reference to drug addiction. It's true. Google it. AOL it. Yahoo it. Either way, I would become addicted to these cosmic fries. And the chicken sandwhich? Thiccc, juiced up, perfect breading to chicken ratio. Great Nashville hot flavor. It was one of those chicken sandwich's where there's a lovely Rim of Chicken™ that extends past the bun. She's also a messy bessy of a sandwich, so keep your napkin handy. We had a brunch reservation for 10 people. They did a nice job accommodating large groups as there was another larger group there at the same time. Service was a little slow but it may have been because of this. I had the biscuits and gravy. I really enjoyed it! I asked for a side of cheese sauce to dip my potatoes in and that made them even better as I typically don't like diced potatoes with breakfast. The biscuit, gravy, and egg were delicious and good portion size. I would recommend this dish! Almost all of their meals come with the diced potatoes, it would be nice if they let people sub those out with fruit instead. The meal was good but it ended up being too heavy on my stomach. Almost all the menu options were very heavy. My husband got the Michigander burrito, it had potatoes in it and as the side. Again, it was potato overkill. They are also heavily seasoned. It took them a good 10 minutes or more after seating is to get us waters, etc. Service was very sparse. But the food was as good as ever and the location was clean and convenient. read more

Came here for a quick lunch on a sunny and warm Thursday afternoon. It was pretty quiet inside but it was that lull after lunch and before dinner time. I sat up at the bar and ordered a Bell's Oberon. If there's anything you need to know about me is I don't like beer. But I liked Bell's! The bartender working was friendly and made a couple recommendations on the menu. I went with the Madtown grilled cheese. It was excellent and had three types of cheese (dill havarti, muenster, smoked gouda) on sourdough bread. With thinly sliced apples, garlic aïoli and honey this was a different take on the traditional grilled cheese sandwich. Try this sandwich! The flavors work and are amazing. I was equally impressed with the roasted red pepper gouda bisque. It also came with fries which were hot and crispy. We stopped by here on Saturday for a snack. We came here after going to the farmers market since it's just a short walk away. The inside is very nicely decorated and they have outdoor tables in the front and on the side of the restaurant. The service was great and our food came out quickly. Other than an issue with their credit card reader (I assume their issue because 2 credit cards of ours didn't work even they worked recently at other places) so we had to pay cash for our meal, it was a nice place to eat. HopCat was the perfect choice for a double date dinner after the movies! Dinner was great! Everyone got what they wanted and loved it. Brenda and I got the BBQ Cobb Salad and it was fantastic, Todd got the Chili, and my husband had the Bourbon Street Blackened Shrimp. Melissa served us and she was funny, informed, fabulous and on it. Not impressed. 2 stars--one because our server Sophie was awesome and the other because they always have good fries. That being said, we reserved a table 3 hours before we arrived and when we got there we were told that they had no tables under my name and they don't take reservations. We politely agreed to wait the 45 minutes, but then when we came back we were told that they didn't have my name in the system. I showed them my phone and gave them my number and then I was told that I gave them the wrong name....I think I know my own name. The food was fine. My burger came out cold and my wife's Caesar salad came out with no Caesar dressing, croutons and cold chicken on top. The manager kindly brought out new, hot chicken and comped the bill, but come on--you basically served luke warm lettuce with cold chicken and called it a salad. Can't say I'll be back, unless we want some great fries. read more

Had dinner with my wife to celebrate my birthday month. Nice discount, THANK YOU for that perk. We enjoyed the food, my wife's salad big and tasty. I had the pickleback chicken with fires, we got the lobster dip shareable. Both fries and wontons were so salty and peppery that we asked for tortilla chips. Due to a later arrival into Holland, MI from the west coast on 5/16/25 we wanted to have dinner. Our hotel staff recommended HopCat and it worked out very well! We learned some other restaurants had closed their kitchen for the evening. The food was good and the ambiance was very good! Plenty of tv's to watch and not too loud. Some other establishments were definitely a bit "louder", which is fine for some. Our bonus was having Morgan for our server! Very personable and yet professional! We enjoyed her service on 5/16 and HopCat's ambiance so much we can back the next day! Unfortunately, we did not have Morgan for our server but she was nice enough to stop and chat with us yet take care of her customers. We've been here four times now and the food has been amazing every single time. The staff is always super welcoming, but our last visit was extra great thanks to our server, Abby--she was awesome! The server was nice but the food was below average. The burger was dry and very well done, it was missing items listed on the menu, it was room temperature and on a stale bun. They were not busy at the time so there was zero excuse for sending out a bad burger. I sent it back and the same burger came back. I would grab fast food before recommending this location. I've been to a few other locations and have had great food. Avoid the Holland location. The upside is the art and decor is well done. My boyfriend was served raw chicken and ate one bite of it at this location resulting food born illness. They were made aware the next day that he was ill and did not follow up as reassured they would. I had to call them a week later then again another 2 weeks later. I then demanded a full refund for the entire bill that evening which they offered. However they applied it to someone else's VISA with the wrong numbers when we had a MASTER CARD! Their grilled chicken burger is great and their vegan burger is yummy, but the fries may be the best part. I also really enjoy their salads -- they typically don't skimp on toppings and they are very flavorful. We prefer takeout here because the service tends to be a bit slow and PRO TIP check your takeout before you leave because they have gotten my order wrong more than once. We were outside and wanted to move to a less sunny table, but were told that we couldn't (even though our food hadn't arrived) by two servers and not offered any alternatives- as a result everyone in our party ranging in ethnicity from East Asian to Black was sunburned. I've never had a dining experience before where the server was so unhelpful in addressing a problem. Our party was a group of young non white women, and we certainly felt like that had to do with why we were not taken seriously. It might be a cool bar but I certainly wouldn't come here to eat again. It's just not very good: the quality is low, the execution is poor, and the service is terrible. I've always loved HopCat! I'm not sure anyone will beat their fries. My husband got the fish and chips which was tasty, I got fire wings which never disappoint, and we tried the new Buffalo Mac which we loved! I generally do not write reviews but I ate at HopCat with a small party this afternoon and it was one of THE worst and uncomfortable dining experiences I have had to date. I enjoyed my meal (turkey wrap, subbed for sourdough) but the others in my party did not. I think the food is fine, very standard American/bar-type food. We requested to be seated outdoors. We were seated outdoors in the blazing, hot sun after waiting over an hour for a table. The wait was expected, the sun and lack of accomodations was not. There were no umbrellas like patios generally have. We were told we could not move and were not offered any alternatives as we literally burned in the sun. There were many tables available but not in the right "section" for our server we were assigned... I will chalk it up to poor management.
