I recently needed an eye exam. I went to the ophthalmology department at Daybreak. The exam and experience were very good. However, because of some findings(cataract, ?early glaucoma) I was referred to another ophthalmologist for additional examination. He seemed competent and affable, but was aggressive in his proposed treatment! Coincidentally, my wife was referred to an ophthalmologist at Hoopes Vision! She also has cataracts. She was very appreciative of The ophthalmologist's exam, explanation, and conservative approach! So, I arranged for an examination at Hoopes Vision, also. I received a similar experience and very greatly appreciated his communication and willingness for a conservative approach! Update to my previous review: I originally came to this facility for a Lasik consultation. I was told that they wanted me out of contacts for a longer period of time before the looked into booking my surgery so I spent a month in glasses before coming back... and I don't wear glasses! When I came back to be reevaluated, I was told that I wasn't a candidate the first time and still was not. Why did they torture me for nothing? What was the point? Life changing. That's how I explain my experience with Hoopes Vision. For over 20 years, I was plagued with terrible vision. It was annoying, but I wore glasses and contacts, and learned to live with it. Then, I had the opportunity to explore options to correct my vision. I am a very squeamish person-and the thought of having surgery on my eyes made me terribly nervous. I went in for a consultation and was immediately put at ease. These guys are professionals and are the best! The surgery itself was painless and quick. I felt adequately prepared and , with the aid of some meds, was relaxed. I followed all the doctors' directions, including the eye drops and periodic check ups. My vision is darn near perfect now and not a day goes by that I'm not quietly grateful for my ability to see street signs unaided. Hoopes Jr. did an excellent job on my ICL's (inner corneal lenses). They gave me my eyesight back! I went from a -11 to -2. I was so happy! I was legally blind and now I could see! The follow up care was good for about three years and then everything changed. I didn't see a doctor after that, just someone who was being trained. One of the doctors would check the ICL's, however. I also have Keratoconus, which is a severe eye disease and I don't trust a tech to monitor that. They began to treat me like they didn't care. I no longer mattered to them. They were getting my money and that was good enough for them. My favorite incident was at the end of my last visit with Hoopes Jr. he told me, "Well, I wouldn't be too concerned about seeing clearly." WHAT OPHTHALMOLOGIST SAYS THAT TO A PATIENT?? Isn't that why we all go to see the eye doctor - so we can see better??!! I was speechless that he would say such a thing and I vowed I would never go back. And as side note, I don't think they are honest when it comes to billing. More than once there have been "fishy" things with billing that I don't have the time to talk about. I was a Lasik patient 14 years ago. I went in as my one eye has declined to a point where I need glasses for it. They billed my insurance for the consultation, but then proceeded to tell me that I would be considered a new patient because, "Your doctor used the records department from the old hospital not the new Hoopes records department". My doctor was a Hoopes doctor that has since retired, I was seen in the old office. So they are billing me for the consultation as a current patient, and wanting to charge me for the touch up as new patient charging the full cost. How can they say I am both? After talking with their billing department on the phone they said, "We don't have your records so your procedure would be billed as a new patient" but "We told you on the phone (after listening to the recording) that you were an existing patient so you are required to pay the consultation." The doctors are all very kind but even as a patient for 10 years it is hard to schedule appointments. After my appointment I was scheduling my check up for next year and they were more than 12 months out. I mentioned I really wanted to get in to see them in December 2025 or before so if I had a change in my prescription that I could get my prescription filled in 2025. They could fit me in for a check up in January 2026. When I said that was frustrating they didn't seem to care. When I mentioned that I might look elsewhere the response was, "That is a good idea. It will probably save you money." I was shocked. My only regret is that I started with them 10 years ago with my Lasik and it didn't really work anyway! read more

Update, I mentioned this before but they just told me they were allergies. Since Lasik, my eyes would get this white liquid on the outer edges of my eyes and if I dont wipe them (like every hour) they look like a pretty bad build up. Embarrassing when dealing with clients. Honestly go to an Opthomologist for Lasik that sees you personally for more than 5 -15 minutes right before surgery. I wanted to love Hoopes. Their process seemed well oiled and I trusted that they would have my best interest. However, after my initial tests and my concerns I went in the day of surgery and spent a whole 5 minutes with the actual surgeon. It went fine but after my eyes took months to recover. After my eyes recovered a bit I kept going in to see why I had eye pain, eye watering, pain above the eye...the optometrists you see there are just not qualified. They just kept giving me antibiotics. I was fed up and went and used more money to go to an Opthomologist and he said I had a type of inflammation that needed a certain steroid and protocol. He was aghast that Hoopes didn't catch it and was treating me with antibiotics. I wish I didn't spend the incredibly high price of Hoopes to only see Optometrists that need more training. Keep your money and go to an Opthomologist for your eye needs! read more

Pre surgery took a while for an evaluation but was ok. Didn't explain all my options available so I ended up having LASIK. Learned about another surgery afterwards that I would've gone with instead but was not talked to about this option at all. Surgery was without a doubt the most unprofessional experience I have ever had. I was yelled at several times, doctor was very frustrated and walked off at different points, having his assistant finish up. At one point a team member had to tell him to "take a break" after he was getting worked up. Overheard conversations in the hall after my surgery where someone was asking how it went and they said there were some issues. Was scared to death that I was going to go blind. Ended up having some intense light sensitivity and pain afterwards where I had to sit in my closet cupping my eyes. I explained my concerns to the person that gave me a followup call about pain and sensitivity. They said that I had some problems with my surgery. I told her that my problem was with the surgeon and that he needed to check himself because his behavior was not appropriate for someone performing eye surgery. Her response was that this surgeon is KNOWN to get frustrated with his patients and "Tends to take it out on them". No real apology. Just a yeah that happens type response. I told them that if this surgeon has an anger management problem he should not be allowed to perform surgery. I have come back several times for my check ups. I have sat in the waiting room and hallway for over an hour and a half while you can hear other people very frustrated and upset with their experience talking to the staff. I have requested video of my surgery and was told that they don't have one. I have looked for and tried to talk to someone about my experience directly because I'm not one to leave bad feedback online but since not a single person from Hoopes has actually tried to take my feedback and instead brush it off or make excuses I was advised to leave a review to help anyone else considering surgery here. read more

Took my son for an appointment because his optometrist was concerned about keratoconus. I had previously been a Hoopes LASIK patient and this was a very different experience. Apparently I'd you're there for medical reasons outside of a $7500 surgery, you don't really matter. The place is built to process as many patients through in a day as they can. It's a nightmare if you're a patient. The driving value seems to be focused on how much money they can make vs. truly caring about patients as people. lt took over a month to get in the schedule and they moved us from Thursday to the following Monday the day before our appointment. I'm busy with my own clients and having to Love things around was very frustrating. Then when we arrived, we waited fifteen minutes in the waiting room which was stop 1 of 6. Here's the process: 1. Waiting room and paperwork (15-20 minutes) 2. Eye machine room with several machines and other patients where you have pre-tests done. Ten minutes. 3. Wait outside that room on chair until they find an exam room. Five minutes. 4. Exam room with first eye chart exam and questions. Ten minutes. 5. Escorted and seated in second waiting room where we waited another ten minutes. 6. Exam room where a student comes in and asks to examine my son. When I ask questions about the kerataconus he stops me and tells me that he won't be talking with me about that. He puts drops in my sons eyes and dilates them - ten minutes from start to drops. 7. Wait five minutes and doc comes in room hurried and talking very surface "I'm your new best friend" for five minutes and looks at eyes, tells us we are fine and when i ask about Keratoconus, he says he's not worried just lol again next year. I ask if we should come back and he tells us to go Anywhere we want (which tells me they only want LASIK PATIENTS and don't really care about eyes. this Doc face to face last about six minutes. 8. Escorted to front desk where we check out. My son's eyes didn't fully dilate until he was home after the visit. if you want to feel like walking $$$ sign, I highly recommend this place. If you want an eye surgeon who views you as a person and genuinely cares about your eye health, I highly recommend finding another provider. Even with my LASIK aftercare it was really about just checking the box to the one year mark. My concerns were dismissed and when I asked About night vision issues they told me to follow up with an optometrist (after LASIK that was supposed to get me to 20/2.0) - you will read cards that show you as 20/40, and worse but they will tell you that you're 20/20 even if you aren't because of their money back guarantee. Hoopes is not concerned about the lifetime value of or for their patient. They're a "one and done" surgery shop. read more

Update. Went to a reputable eye doctor they told me that Hoops installed the lens incorrectly and now I have to have another eye surgery. This will be my last post about Hoopes ruin your vision eye center but I will continue to tell everyone I come across how horrible they are.If you care for your eyes go somewhere else some may have a good experience there but it's the ones that have problems they just throw to the side because that don't care. It's been a little over a month since I had my eyes done and I couldn't be happier. I wore glasses/contacts since 6th grade. It was awful. I can't even remember how many times they've inconvenienced me over my life. I could list hundreds of times I hated my horrible eyes for needing glasses/contacts. I decided to finally do something about it. I called Hoopes around the 4th of July, scheduled a free consultation the next week, and then after the consultation got my eyes done a week later. I was impressed with how quickly I was able to get it all scheduled and done. The day of I was in and out the door in under an hour, and the actual time spent "uncomfortable" under the lasers was about a minute per eye. As far as the actual process and recovery, the only thing that comes to mind was that my eyes were really watery the first couple of hours after surgery. I was sensitive to light outside for a few weeks. Everyone also needs to use eye drops pretty frequently the first couple of weeks and then less frequently after that for a few months. It's pretty cliche to say, but I can't believe I waited this long. I should have done it years ago. 20/15 in both eyes and it is amazing. In a few months I'm going to go snorkeling and not have to worry about my vision! Snowboarding this year without glasses or contacts! Hiking and running without glasses sliding down my face or getting dirty! I can camp and not have to worry about finding a place to stash my glasses! The list goes on. The price is high, but worth it. If you wear contacts you're probably spending a decent amount each year on them. If you wear glasses that is likely less money, but the convenience of never needing glasses is amazing. Hoopes is definitely the place I would recommend getting it done at. You really don't want to go cheap on your eyes if it can be avoided. They cover all post op stuff for a year and have a lifetime guarantee on the vision as well. I had Lasik a few years ago. They have a service guarantee "as long as you come in once a year for a checkup." Due to the COVID shutdown in 2020, I missed my annual appointment. When I called a year later, they told me my guarantee was no longer valid because I missed a year. I petitioned to have that reconsidered. The receptionist said, "I'll ask, but I doubt they'll consider it." That was the last I heard from them. I have multiple friends that went to a different eye care provider in Salt Lake City and couldn't be more pleased with their continued support and service. I cannot say the same about Hoopes. First off, I got the time wrong! So the wonderful person at the front desk let me know, in a kind fashion and I took advantage of my mistake to visit a nearby bakery! Upon my return I was so pleased to find a front office that truly welcomes you (especially when you're on time!) and makes you feel like a valued customers. Then it was off to the exam, and that proceeded with great professional excellence. Kirsten, Paul, John and Dr. Hoopes Jr. walked me through the process with comfort and care. I will be sure to return with a follow-up after my surgery! Surgeries complete! Still a five star experience. The care, competence and empathy here is quite stunning. I mean, after all, these are your EYES! You want only the best care. And that is what I received here at Hoopes Vision and EyeSurg. I asked for interocular lenses that would allow me to see both near and far without glasses. We opted for mono fit, where you correct the dominant eye for distance and the other for near. It worked like a dream. I was able to have the restriction removed from my driver's license and I can still read without glasses. One of the terrific tools Hoopes Vision provided me was a document for charting the eye drop regimen. Don't think you can do this without that! And if you are having both eyes done, be sure to mark your eye drop bottles L and R or otherwise confusion will ensue. I had LASIK in December 2018 performed by Dr. Hoopes, Sr., and it has easily been one of the best decisions I've ever made. From my consultation to my actual surgery date, the staff has been so helpful and supportive, thoroughly explaining the process every step of the way. The procedure itself was super simple. I asked a million and one questions leading up to my surgery and constantly felt at ease by the staff. On the day of, I was given a Valium to relax and again, every step of procedure before, during, and after were explained. Dr. Hoopes and the nurses were incredible and helped me stay calm throughout my surgery, although it wasn't nearly as daunting as I thought it would be and the actual surgery took mere minutes to complete. I was maybe at the facility an hour total. Afterwards, I took a long tiger snooze and relaxed the rest of the day. A month later and I've gone from a dismal 20/400 to a crystal clear 20/20. Free touch ups are not free. $200 evaluation + $600 per eye is not free. They are not upfront about what they expect. You are required to get yearly eye exams through them. They did not mention this to me in person. I used another eye doctor and apparently it is no good. In fact, its in small writing. How funny they would use small writing for these details to someone who can't see. They need to say these expectations in person. I am 30 and had this done about 26 and my eye sight is nearly gone in my right side. Not really sure if its worth the money or if I should have just gone somewhere else. read more

I haven't even gone in for an exam, they don't seem to know their discount prices because they stated on the radio there 700 per eye and then when you call them up they say it's 700 off each eye and want a lot more like 3400 or 2400 , but that's not $700 a eye , so their ad is deceiving to get you in and noticed that on other comments there are not many reviews that are up-to-date, it also seems like when you go for checkups either Wait forever or they tell you to go to someone else not really what I wanna do ether it also seems from the reviews I've read they don't back up their work . Well they built a nice place with everybody's money and give you a free cookie, but I think once they get the money you're pushed off into the back room or they just make excuses to get out of the situation that they have created. So I don't think this is a place for me and I'm just passing on the word oh yeah make sure you read the fine print which you can see because you need vision where they add on a price for the drops they gave you which I don't know the price but I can only imagine it's astronomical because it's a way of them making more money for them. DR BEN BUCKNER is perfect in my book. He recently assessed my husband's eyes and ten-year-old cataract surgery done by another provider. Dr B gave an authoritative, yet tactful, evaluation to my husband. On this basis i scheduled an appointment with Dr B for cataracts i knew i had forming. The Hoopes testing is very thorough, the staff is great, friendly. But bottom line is the surgeon's skill and end result. After my first surgery the end of June, i could compare my sight through the new lens with the still-cataract covered right eye - brighter colors, from yellowish hue to blue-white (real) hue. My eye Dr Bradley Fellows sent me to Hoopes Vision for cataracts, after all the testing was done they told me my eyes were not bad enough yet for Medicare to cover and then sent me a bill for $145.07...I find that to be quite a scam to make money off of elderly. Warm chocolate chip cookies. They walk around and give you chocolate chip cookies and water bottles. What else do you really need? I just had Lasik surgery performed here, and I loved the whole experience. The whole cutting your eye thing is slightly scary, but the entire staff makes the process very comfortable. The staff continues to be very friendly and easy to work with even at follow up appointments. They really do care about their customers and they show it. I felt very safe in Dr. Hoopes and his staff's hands and the surgery went perfect. I had my Lasik done at Hoopes Vision back in 4/2015 we are just shy of it being a year. This was my only option as my eyes started to reject my contacts and were causing infections and discomfort. It was this or wear glasses the rest of my life. So I made my appointment. Dr. Hoopes Jr. did my procedure and walked me through everything he was doing. Over from the time you walk in the door to when you leave it is about 45 mins. Short and painless. This really was the best decision I ever made. I have no more infections or irritation and best of all no glasses. So here is why the three stars. Since 4/2015 and my initial surgery, I had to go back in about 5 months later as the left eye went from being far sighted to near sighted. In other words they over corrected my eye during the initial surgery. So I had to go back through all the post opt stuff again with the overwhelming about of drops, the no make up for 2 weeks, no water activities for 6 months etc. My left eye after surgery was still slightly blurry but you only notice just when looking through that eye. No biggy, really. Well then 2 months later I was told I needed to go back in for a 3rd surgery because there were cells forming under the flap of my eye now. This was by far the worst of the 3 surgeries as they literally have to scrap the cells off your eye. Now it been about 4 months since that surgery and my left eye has no more cells, but is still slightly blurry. I go back every 3 to 4 months for them to check my eye. With my work schedule this is a real pain. There almost is a chance in another 6 months or so if my eye is still not clear that I will have to go back in for a 4th surgery. Aside for all the bad, the good is they do not charge you for the additional surgeries other than what you have to pay for the prescribed eye drops each time. I really do appreciate all they have done, and the staff is great. But I have mixed feelings and if I have to go in for a 4th surgery I think I will look into getting a second opinion. read more

I had the PRK procedure done which is the more painful recovery one because they remove the thin layer of skin cells from over the iris and then allow it to grow back under a contact lens acting as a bandage. The procedure took just 10 minutes and my vision is now 15/20!!! I had a -4.75 in each eye beforehand and took about 1 week to recover. 3 weeks to complete recovery. I am completely satisfied with Dr. Hoopes. He was kind and informative and was sensitive to my anxiety with working on my eyes. In my experience I had some haziness at night when looking at lights but after 1 year I no longer experience this. read more

Hoopes Vision is the standard by which any eye care facility should be judged. The new facility is absolutely wonderful--large, attractive, and conveniently located. The staff is courteous and highly professional. As one or two other reviews have mentioned, there are always freshly baked cookies on hand to soothe any waiting period (which seems to be pretty rare here). I took them up on their offer of a free eye exam, and I was floored by its thoroughness. Seriously, they completely "mapped" both of my eyes in ways I didn't even know could be measured. You will never find a more complete eye exam anywhere. After Dr. Hoopes Jr sat down and discussed the results with me, I decided to have him perform PRK to correct my vision (I had been wearing contacts with a -4.0 prescription). My surgery was done in Feb 2009. Each eye can now see 20/15 individually, and when used together my vision is even better than that. My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner! Some people say Hoopes is too expensive compared to some discount places around town, but knowing their professionalism and also considering that ALL follow-up visits, medications, etc were included in that price makes me emphatically state that eye surgery at Hoopes is an *excellent* value. I certainly feel it was worth every penny. This is now where I go for my annual eye exam. Throughout the years, Hoopes Vision has continued to offer professional service. Horrible! They were super friendly and helpful with my first visit. They told me I was the "Perfect candidate" for lasik... The second they got their money I felt like I was in a Nascar pit. They couldn't get me through fast enough. The first post surgery visit I informed them that I couldn't see well at all. Their entire attitude changed. They blamed me for everything. "Are you taking your drops" (medication)? "You must not be healing correctly". "It's in your head" (Your mind needs time to adapt). " You just need time to heal" They came up with every excuse in the book. It's been 7 months now. Night vision is totally screwed. Halos, starbursts! Near vision is totally lost. Currently wearing Bi-focals. I wasn't medically cleared to drive for 8 days. I can barely pass a driving test now. Eyes have been burning dry and sore for the entire seven months. Doctors say they can't fix my vision, administration says they won't give a refund of any kind. I went to a different eye doctor and he said my eyes are 20/40 and 20/120. Their "see clearly" guarantee claims they will get you to 20/25. They aren't even answering my phone calls for the last four months. Do not go here!!! read more
