Hook's BBQ is a bit hard to find, but once you find it, you will be glad that you did. There was adequate parking and walking in, I approached the counter and placed my order to the friendly woman behind the cash register. After ordering. I found a seat and waited for my name to be called. The inside has the ambiance that you would expect from a barbecue place. Soon enough my name was called and I received my meal. I had ordered the large pulled pork and for my two sides. I went with French fries and baked beans. It also came with two pieces of bread and pound cake. I opted for the hot barbecue sauce. All in all, I was impressed with my meal. It was good and it was pretty competitively priced. Hook's BBQ is a great place to have a meal if you are in the Hoover, Alabama area. Picked up a couple meals at the Drive-Thru last evening, just too hot in Troy to fire up our kitchen! Wife ordered Rib Plate (comes with 2 sides, bread and cake), I opted for the Chicken sandwich platter with two sides. The thoughtful gal at the window advised they add 3% for CC now, thankfully I had enough cash.. a rare thing! Just a drive around the building and about a 6 minute wait and we feasted!! I stopped in for what I thought was going to be a great BBQ meal. It was about 2:30 PM on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. After being seated for a few minutes, I discovered that you order from the counter and your food is subsequently delivered to your table. I figured this out after being ignored by the staff and ultimately asking for someone to take my order. I went to the counter and ordered the pulled pork, cole slaw, and baked beans. I was asked for my preference of mild or hot BBQ sauce. I chose the hot. I assumed the BBQ sauce would be served on the side so the customer could add it to satisfy their individual taste. The meal was delivered to the table in pretty short order in a styrofoam to-go box. I told the waitress I was dining in and was informed that it didn't matter, that's the only way they served their food. Okay, no big deal. I opened the to-go box and found a surprise. There was a huge piece of pound cake right on the top. There was a wax paper barrier between the cake, bread, and and the meal, On removing the wax paper, I saw what appeared to be a great meal. I tried the cole slaw first. It was like eating sugar straight out of a bowl. One bite was wall it took. It was easy to sweet. Okay, the baked beans had to be good. Wrong. While not awful, they were very bland, straight-out-of-the-can baked beans. Nothing added to spruce them up at all. That's okay. Not what I expected from a BBQ restaurant, but they were edible. Then the meat. It was saturated in BBQ sauce. I believe the meat would have been much better had the sauce been served on the side. I tried a few bites of the meat and finally just stopped. It was drenched in so much BBQ sauce that I couldn't taste the meat. I digress. I am a carnivore. I can make a meal out of meat alone. I consider sides to be unnecessary elements of a meal to enhance the requirements for what the USDA considers to be a square meal. Back to the pound cake. The pound cake was quite possibly one of the best I have ever tasted. It appeared to be homemade and it was fantastic. As far the overall meal is concerned, the servings were ample and would satisfy the heartiest af appetites. The rest, as stated above, left a lot to be desired. That pretty well sums up my experience at Hooks BBQ. I'll probably try another place next time. read more

I always stop by when coming through town to get take out. The BBQ and sauce is wonderful. The stew has been a favorite of mine for years! The past two times I've gotten it, it tastes completely different. Very strong vinegar taste and not enough salt. As expensive as food is now, I don't know if I want to try it again. We stopped by based on other reviews on our way to Huntsville. They were all wearing mask and had tables closed off for social distancing. We were happy to see the the pit behind glass for all to observe. We ordered two small pork plates with slaw, potato salad, fried okra. It came out with rice, two slices of bread and pound cake. We also had the rib plates with coleslaw and fries. We all agree the food was amazing except for the potato salad, we were not a fan of it. Our daughter raves about the okra and slaw. The ribs came right off the bone. The bbq sauce is a mustard vinegar sauce and delicious We would do 4 1/2 stars if able. The bathrooms were clean and hand sanitizer was on the serving counter for customers. We are marking as a place to revisit!!!! read more

Stopped here for lunch on recommendations of relatives. The place is tucked away off the main road, on the back of the lot behind other businesses. I had their pork ribs. I would have to say I have had better ribs in other BBQ restaurants. Their French fries were nothing but deep fried frozen crinkle fries. But the coleslaw was good and so was the pound cake. But their BBQ sauce really sucked, where most BBQ houses sauce is thick Hook's sauce had the consistency of water and hardly any flavor. This place was not good enough to go back. read more

I'll start by saying that Hook's deserves 3.8 stars. The food was very good, prepared to order, and delicious. I'm a big fan of the baked beans! The only thing holding back that fourth star, was the fact that the pulled pork was not as smokey as I like it. It was however very moist and tender! It's really good. My daughter goes here all the time for the stuffed baked potato with pulled pork which is huge and enough for two people to eat. I had the regular sized rib plate with baked beans and cole slaw. The slaw and beans were very good and ribs were delicious, tender as hell (come right off the bone) and cooked perfect.
