I arrived at the restaurant at 7:30pm. They close at 8. The restaurant was entirely empty. I asked to be seated. I was told they stop seating at 7:50. I showed the woman my watch and phone which indicated 7:32. She refused to acknowledge the time and said not takeout after 7:50pm. It was 7:35 when I left. I am fine with their no credit card policy. I knew going in so I was prepared. However, we recently moved to Chippewa and our relatives keep saying this place is good. We tried it once, and it was subpar. We thought maybe it was just the dishes we chose so we tried it again last week. We tried to call to put in a pick up order and the phone was busy. After an hour of trying and getting the busy signal, I went to the restaurant to put in my order and wait. I let the person know that the phone was busy and they said it was off the hook because they were so busy. I guess I don't know about pick up orders but there was only one customer in the restaurant eating and no one else came in for pick up orders while I was waiting. Received the food quickly. However, it was still terrible. Cream Cheese wontons were so salty we couldn't eat them. We won't be back. read more

Stopped for a late lunch before heading over to Leinie's for a tour and some samples. We ordered crab rangoon and egg rolls for starters. You can tell these are made from scratch. The crab rangoons were probably the best I have ever had. They were light and the cream cheese filling was so flavorful. For entrees we had the happy family and orange chicken. I normally don't like orange chicken because it's usually so sweet and the breading is usually very heavy. Not here, the breading was light and crisp, the sauce was not super sweet. The owner is super friendly. There were several people while we were eating that came in for their carry out order and you can tell she takes the time to get to know her customers. read more

I tried looking at their menu online, but the website linked in Yelp wouldn't load. Oh well...no big deal. I called in for pickup anyway and ordered general tso and lo mein. The woman that took my order let me know that the lo mein would be $1 extra which was appreciated. The general tso was very good. The chicken didn't have the same scrap meat texture that a lot of Chinese food has. A+ The lo mein noodles though...I got home and opened the container to find plain cooked spaghetti noodles. The old adage, "Beggars can't be choosy" holds true here. There isn't any Chinese food for miles around Chippewa, so Hong Kong is it. Their wonton soup is tasty, the broccoli stems cooked just right, but the broth was terribly salty; probably a powdered mix. The wontons have a ton of filling, but there could be a whole lot more nuance to the flavor. Pass on the lemon chicken. The syrupy sauce was tart, but the chicken, more like, "Where's the chicken?" Each 1/4" x 1/4" x 3/4" piece of chicken (I kid you not) was covered in thick batter. If I was to have extracted all the chicken and put it in a measuring cup, I'd be amazed if it totaled more than 1/4 C. Only because it was snowing out and I wanted soup did I venture in. They mean well, but what if they were to up their game and didn't pander to the lowest common denominator? I'm tempted to give them the awesome, out of print Chinese cookbook, "The Key to Chinese Cooking" by Irene Kuo. read more

I have never been disappointed with their food. their crab Rangoon is by far the best I've had nation-wide. their fare is pretty standard, but they have no problems adding spice. my favorite isn't on the menu anymore, but they are more than willing to make it anyway. their hot & sour soup is excellent, and so is their empress shrimp. the old lady is a crab, this is natural state, don't expect a smile with a thank you. read more

I've been frequenting this business since I moved here 30 years ago. The food is prepared fresh (I recommend Hot & Spicy Pork), the won ton's are delicious and the service is friendly. I almost feel like a member of the family I get such a warm greeting everytime I order. The dining area was remodeled prior to their move to it's current location. Hardwood floors, chinese decor, enough seating for a large crowd and a separate area for those waiting for their takeout. A magazine rack full of several different publications and a huge TV to watch as you wait. The cons are since they are chronically understaffed you may need to call several times or just walk in and place your take out order. And sometimes there are a lot of used plates on the tables after a busy time. Other than that, I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We attempted to order takeout for a cold winter's eve, but were stymied at every phone number we tried: the numbers found on yelp, google, and even the ye olde papier phonebooke all took us to disconnected messages. After being similarly stymied at phoning in an order at another fine downtown Chippewa Falls eating establishment, a member of our party agreed to trek down from one of Chippewa Falls' hills with orders for both restaurants in hand (just in case and ever-hopeful!). So basically, if the phone isn't working, just go in and place your order. It will be ready fairly quickly. After a reasonable wait time, the brave member of our party returned with typical Chinese American takeout in hand: eggrolls all around, shrimp fried rice, sweet & sour shrimp, and General Tso's chicken. As has been mentioned, the eggrolls are made with ground beef, which is...different, but I've experienced similar at other small town Chinese American restaurants. The sweet and sour sauce was that shade of red-pink that is astonishing to behold. The General Tso's chicken probably tastes the same as their orange chicken, but perhaps just slightly less sweet. All around, the meal was a perfectly fine Chinese American Meal. We were told that only 3 of the 5 scheduled staff had shown up for work that winter weekend evening. This was one of several stories of labor shortages in service industries (retail and restaurants) I heard while visiting Wisconsin on this trip. This seems to be a real problem in Wisconsin (and elsewhere). If only there was a labor pool available that was willing to work for low wages in entry-level, menial, or arduous labor positions... Think about that one, folks. read more

I ordered Hunan Happy Family. The food was good. However, the waitress brought me dirty silverware wrapped in a napkin. When I pointed it out, all she could say is I'm sorry. Never brought me new silverware or offered to take anything off the check. So good food, not so good service. read more

Hong Kong is by far my favorite Chinese food in the Chippewa/Eau Claire area. They make everything from scratch which is hard to find around here. There is one waitress, and one cook (to my knowledge), but they somehow always manage to get food out extremely fast, no matter how busy they are. (10-20 min). The lady that takes the orders is extremely nice, so I'm not sure why the previous person called her a "crab". She always makes conversation with me, and always gives a warm smile and thank you when I leave. I highly recommend the beef with mixed vegetables, egg rolls, crab rangoon, sesame chicken, orange chicken, dumpling soup, and sweet and sour chicken/pork/shrimp. I want to specifically add that the chicken fried rice is so good that my boyfriend, the pickiest eater I've ever met, absolutely loves it. We eat here weekly and have never been disappointed. read more

Had lunch at the Hong Kong House. The restaurant appears to be a one person establishment with the greeter, server, cashier, bus boy and cook all being the same woman. The egg rolls were odd ... I had never had egg rolls with ground beef. I had the vegetable teriyaki with rice and it came out piping hot and was quite good. Other diners in our group also enjoyed their food. read more
