I've driven past this divey-lookin' Cantonese spot that looks like it used to be an old KFC, so many times. I finally decided to take a peek and got some take-out to bring to a family member's house for a luncheon get-together. Given the old fast food spacing, I thought this was going to be mostly a take-out spot. But this place does have some tables in there and may even rock some table service. I did a pick-up on a weekend lunch, and the inside was quite packed, almost chaotic even. The tables are jammed together, and people are bringing parties of 4-6 in here like it is a banquet hall, some even lugging strollers in that tiny space. And with all that clusterf#@'n, there is a line of people standing, waiting for take-out literally hovering over people's heads that are eating. Friggin' insane! Total 180 from 2020...member those days. Lol But I can see why people can mob this spot. The kitchen is pretty decent, not top notch but quite decent. And even though not cheap ($17+ dishes) they do give you a good amount, so I think there is a good perception for value here Combo Chow Mein ($19/3*) I got this for family members that like noodles, and I thought it was just mid. Thick yellow lo mein noodles are stir fried with big chunks of chicken, pork and shrimp. The proteins were impressive as nothing were tiny bites. But the noodles were just meh, with little wok flavor and it just seemed a bit tacky to me, versus smooth and chewy. I wanted to try the chow fun but will have to wait til next time. The reviews seem positive for that. Half Roast Duck ($18/4.5*) I only had a few pieces during our potluck and I felt they do a good job with these roast ducks. Beautiful mahogany color on the exterior, not too crisp but also not greasy and soggy. The meat was juicy and not too salty, which I applaud. Lots of bony pieces but that is the nature of this dish, it is a nibbler's jam. Salt n Pepper Pork Chops ($17.50/3.5*) Thin cut pork chops cut into smaller pick-up pieces. It is definitely marinated in that baking soda seasoning as the meat is super tender, almost squishy. There's some starch coating (cornstarch?) but the fry is so light that it doesn't get that crisp. I like it more crisp. But not sure if the steam from the box softened the crispness, but I tried one right in the car to taste while it was still fresh. I liked the seasoning as it was salty and very garlic-y, but the exterior was more sticky and tacky versus crisp. I love Canto food so I'm sure I'm gonna be back to try more dishes. Still want to try their Wonton Soups, a simple steamed fish dish with some vibrant greens and that Beef Chow Fun just to name a few. I may even eat in but definitely on a weekday/weeknight. I can't attest to the other dishes here but their roast duck didn't disappoint one bit! We came to pick up some up for Christmas, and they were selling out fast. We came here on a Saturday in December around 11:30am or so. The place was busy, but not packed. I ordered the BBQ Pork noodle soup, my husband ordered the Duck and BBQ rice plate and our friend got a spicy mushroom and chicken dish. He was the one that recommended this place and came on his rave reviews. We had a nice table in the corner and were offered tea or water. We opted for the water. We put in our orders and waited. Their orders came out pretty quickly. Mine on the other hand didn't arrive till they were half way done with their meals. I don't know what went wrong. Mine should be the quickest as all you do is scoop some soup out of the pot, throw some noodles on it and some BBQ Pork and you got my dish. Maybe they forgot about my order, I'm not really sure. When it cam out I was more then ready to eat. The BBQ Pork was delicious, just as I like it. Thick piece, very little fay. The soup on the other hand was terrible. The broth had no flavor and my husband tried it and agreed. I would not order it again and I want to warn other people about it while I'm at it. This place rules, shocked it has 3.3 stars! Service was quick, nice, and helpful for us when we asked for some menu advice. The portions are absolutely huge, one plate of something can easily feed two people and very very reasonably priced for the portion. The mu shu chicken is absolutely beast, something in the sauce man!! I really liked how the portions were all big and definitely family sized to share. Everything has good flavor. I had Mexican, Filipino and Japanese food during my East Bay weekend: I was ready for something else. I'm glad Hong Kong BBQ was nearby my friend's place in Castro Valley. We shared salt & pepper pork chops, garlic pepper steak cubes, roast duck and roast pork (not pictured). In addition, we received a complimentary cup of hot & sour soup. All of the food was really good, except the roast pork that was average. The pork chops were big, tender and nicely seasoned. Likewise, the beef was tasty AF and the duck was crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. It was way better vs a duck I bought at 99 Ranch recently. The latter lacked any flavor, and the skin was not crispy. Lastly, my issue with the roast pork is that it did not include much crunchy skin. Regarding the ambiance, its pretty sterile but functional. You can see the BBQ items hanging to the right of the counter. The service was friendly and the food came out fast. The comp hot & sour soup was a nice surprise. I'm surprised at the good ethnic food in Castro Valley. I only come for their B.B.Q. items They also have many other selections. I ordered 2 items bbq meat (meat of your choice) over rice, I had roast duck and roast pork (their skin is super crunchy!), and their barbecue pork is also a must to order. They have also added different Chinese dessert, their black soy bean pudding is very tasty, but I believe they don't offer that often. This spot is an amazing hidden gem in Castro Valley for roast duck and Chinese/Cantonese style dessert. The duck here is juicy, meaty, and flavorful. No bony/anorexic ducks here! We've ordered from here multiple times and they have always been consistent with our order. Now, while the duck is really good, what we really love about this place is the dessert. The owner here makes the most amazing tofu pudding (douhua) in the entire bay area. My partner and I have yet to find any place that matches how silky and smooth the tofu is or how refreshing the homemade syrups are. Believe me, we've tried places in the south bay, the east bay, and the peninsula and no one comes close. The owner has also started making coconut jelly/pudding (tongsui) that we think is better than Melo Melo or Tongsui. She makes it with no gelatin for those who are vegetarian. This was my first visit to this hole in the wall restaurant, and unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. The service was slow, and the staff appeared unfriendly and unprofessional. Usually these places are gems but instead its in a junkyard getto area. Not worth your safety. I ordered two items and specifically requested the sauce to be served separately to avoid soggy noodles. Instead, the sauce arrived in soup form, making the dish unpleasant. When I called the restaurant to explain the issue, the staff member ended the call without offering an apology. Came here a quite frequent since is close by my place. Their Chinese bbq is average. Tried their duck and roast pork. The duck is good but the roast pork has strong pork smell. Maybe is the cut I got but little too gamey. However their stir fried are pretty good most of the time. They have a lot of "wok air" in their fried rice but every now and then they will miss their mark and it doesn't taste as good. Hong Kong BBQ is located on the street-view of a busy street. They share a small and cramp parking lot with a few other businesses, so parking may be limited / hit or miss. The restaurant itself is pretty small with a bunch of tables crammed together and barely any room to walk and squeeze between. Service is a huge miss - I stood by the entrance for a least 5 - 8 minutes with no acknowledgment or greeting. I had to personally go up to several employees to ask to be seated, I was even ignored by 2 who walked right past me (I knew they heard and saw me, as this restaurant is so small and cramped that there is barely space to move around). After finally being seated, it took awhile for me to try to flag an employee down over and over again to just take my order - they were too busy helping other people who seem to be regulars or knew the boss. Even trying to get the check after eating, I had to ask 2 people at least 2 times each before actually getting my check. I ordered their Crab Meat with Fish Maw Soup and Roast Duck Over Rice. The soup was pretty good, I enjoyed the big chunks of crab meat (looks like imitation crab, but still tasty) and the fish maw was good too. I can see it being good if you've meat to mix it with at least for two people. Prices are more, both plates were about 35 ish dollars. My best description for dining experience today is extremely disappointing. This is my go to Chinese bbq place in town. Tonight was definitely not their finest, it was quite the opposite. Service is their usual, just give us your order, no pleasantry, smile or friendly banter. I get. My order should be up their will house - roast pork and roast duck over rice. There's a quarter of a roast pig hung but what was served was plenty of roast pork meat but the most desired part is the crispy crunchy pork skin was missing in action. The restaurant was extremely clean and organized, unlike some other Chinese restaurants that do not keep so clean. Lastly, the service was phenomenal. The waiter was so respectful and attentive. So food was semi hot, defiantly not nam king. It was 68.48 cents for bland food. Need to be season a little more. Although customer services was not too bad. But I can say I will not go back. I order walnut shrimp which was overly soft didn't some might like but not I and none of the walnut shrimp have tasted like this, kung pao (it didn't have any sauce on it) absolutely no sauce. And the fried salt pepper tofu seasoned right but it was more like bake tofu. Lastly the hot sour soup not warm and had chicken in it , just expected tofu. I couldn't even eat it a whole bunch of chicken strips. The place is clean and location right off freeway 580. But sorry can't go back . I am going to not be lazy and drive to Nam King. Ownership of Hong Kong BBQ changed hands a couple years ago and a much needed revamp of the interior was a welcome sight. The menu pretty much remained the same. The BBQ items are still excellent including their roast duck. My favorite dish WAS the roast duck wonton noodle soup . But after having it over 20 years the roast duck wonton noodles was aweful. Over the years the size and price has fluctuated but the general taste was always good. Today the noodles were mushy and pre cooked, the soup was very bland and the wontons were not as good. We've usually get to go from HK BBQ, and mainly just the mapo tofu. That's always been my go to at HK BBQ, but never actually order other things or ate inside the restaurant before. I think after my dinner here, Hong Kong BBQ is now my fav Chinese spot in Castro Valley. It's a really homey, authentic Chinese restaurant. The prawns with scrambled eggs was the star dish of the night. It was sooo silky smooth! The gravy was flavored well, prawns were good sized and cooked correctly, and the chow fun was fresh and chewy! The Yin Yang fried rice was really good as well. I just like the fact that I basically get 2 fried rice for the price of one! The two sauces tasted great and really complemented the fried rice. The Westlake soup was good as well. One order was enough to feed 4 people plus seconds! The salt and pepper wings were meh. Decent crisp to them, but flavors didn't stick. Opposite was the sesame chicken. That was over sauced. The sauced really look over and I wasn't truly able to enjoy the chicken. HK BBQ is pricier than some other Chinese restaurants. However, you get what you pay for. I've never thought of Castro Valley till I see the restaurant reviews on "Did you eat yet" youtube. Had a few things to go and will come back with a second dine in with friends later. - Roasted pork - I didn't ask but my guess is they only roast the pork rib area instead of entire pig (not enough demand). It's good but nothing special. We will try the duck next time; - Singapore noodle - The curry power is extra fragrant with a high heat wok (wok hei). I especially like the overcooked egg bits. Next time I would ask not to put cha shiu nor the green scallion in (too distracting and IMO, they can cut the cha siu thinner. They were too big and I don't think it adds to it at all) - Housemade grass jelly (they have many other choices all house made). It's really good and not very sweet to fit the Cantonese's taste. Highly recommended and will try other next time. Oakland is the desert of Cantonese Bistros now so this is for sure a great find, will be back again! read more
