Quick & delicious-- Came here two days in a row for lunch! This restaurant has been here since 1988 & is the definition of a hidden gem. They are tucked away in the hills of Hayward, but also close to Cal State East Bay. I am a sucker for quick lunches. At China Best Restaurant, not only is it affordable, you get massive portions. Each meal is cooked to order so you're getting steaming hot & homemade food. You should expect a ~15-20 minute wait for your food, but I promise it's worth it! Their menu is quite large, but very easy to read & makes sure that everyone has something to eat. I was excited to try their beef with bitter melon combo (comes with chow mein & steamed rice)! I chose the black bean sauce. The second day, I ordered the same combo, but asked them to sub the beef with chicken. They happily accommodated my request & quickly took my order over the phone. I was not prepared for the amount of food that was piled into that takeout container-- and for only $15 too! Each combo could easily be 2-2.5 meals. Both days, the beef and the chicken were succulent but still had the right amount of chew. The bitter melon was cooked exactly how I like it, still had a nice crunch! The noodles were seasoned lightly, which was a nice change of flavor for typical Chinese restaurants where everything is overly salty! They have plenty of seating if you're looking to dine in rather than order takeout. The restaurant presents itself as a fairly standard place to eat because the food speaks for itself. No need for fancy decorations. I will say, the restaurant is very clean which I appreciate. Next time I'm around, I'll dine in so I can try out a bowl of soup. Make sure you ask for some chili oil, I'm not sure if it's house made but it's a nice Szechuan style chili oil and it goes so well with the chow mein!

A friend recommended this restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised. It's quaint with a half dozen tables. We arrived about an hour before they closed and it wasn't very busy with eat in customers. The owner served us and was so sweet and helpful. We ordered beef with vegetables, sweet and sour chicken, wonton soup and pork fried rice. The food was so fresh and delicious. It's about a 15 minute drive for us but well worth it.

I really liked the walnut prawns here. I got the lunch special which came with rice and a fried wonton. The batter was light and crispy, however I could have done with less of the mayo sauce. The rice had some hard, overcooked bits which were not fun to accidentally bite into, so I had to eat extra cautiously. We also ordered best orange chicken lunch special with chow mein and rice. It was really good as well. Overall, it was a lot of food for the value and the lady working was really sweet. I might just order ala carte next time.

This is definitely a hidden gem in the Hayward Highland area near California State University, East Bay. Located inside University Plaza, is China Best, which serves up good Chinese foods at a very reasonable price with good sized portions. Everything here is cooked fresh to order, so everything is very fresh, tasty and delicious. The portions here are very generous, they definitely don't skimp out on the portions. I've tried the following here: Sweet & Sour Pork Sweet & Sour Chicken String Bean Chicken Beef with Fried Tofu Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce Mongolian Beef Curry Bew Stew You can either get them as an entree, lunch special, or combo. Lunch comes with rice and fried wonton skins, while the combo comes with rice, and chow mein, all at different pricing, but very reasonable. The owner here is so sweet, she remembers all her regular customers and she has owned the place for the past 5 years. If you are looking for some tasty Chinese food with reasonable pricing, this is the place!

This place gives large portions for a very affordable price and it taste very good. Worker is very friendly. It's a great place for east bay students to come for lunch.

    58. Sweet and Sour Pork Combo
    Kelekolio M.

To start off, I would give this place a 3.5/5. Main reason is the sweet and sour pork doesn't have that fresh taste to it. When my order was ready, the plate was very hot, and as I bit into the sweet and sour pork it was a little crispy but almost had a somewhat frozen texture that is hard to describe. The onions and bell peppers also had this frozen texture as it was hard and not really soft and grilled. The sauce is okay and the rice was also okay. However, the portion is huge and definitely filled me up. Employees are also very friendly and attentive.

We have ordered from China Best Restaurant about 3x or so. 2x for lunch and 1x for dinner. By far, the food at lunch was SO much better aka fresh and we enjoyed the combos, which included plain chow mein noodles and rice. The Lemon Chicken and Green Onion and Ginger Chicken were cooked well and had great flavor without being overly salty. Now their dinner was an entirely different story. The Salt and Pepper Pork was horrible. The meat tasted old, gamey, and was the worst that we've had as this is our go-to dish. No amount of breading or salt could save it and the portions were large and no leftovers were eaten. The potatoes in the Curry Chicken were sliced thin and were too al dente for my liking, but others might like it this way. The flavors weren't bad but felt disjointed. The Beef Chow Fun was fine. Would we get food from here again? Still debating as prices were good for the portions, but if so, it would only be for lunch.

This spot was different years ago! Business must have new owners. I'm very dissatisfied with the quantity & quality of the food. I give them one star because the cashier was friendly. The meals are pricey for the small amount that they give...I don't mind paying for great food but the meat for starters are extremely chewy and hard. I had to spit some out because of it. I won't be coming to this spot again.

The staff told her we wouldn't be seated unless our entire party was present. About 4 people were late, but they still seated us. The restaurant kind of felt old and somewhat dirty. But hey, it was my dad's birthday. I wasn't paying for lunch. We occupied three tables and ordered from both the lunch and dim sum menus. I enjoyed dishes like shiu mai, pork buns, walnut shrimp, fried rice, fish, and fried noodles. The sesame balls were tasty, but the service was slow, and I had to follow up on our order. I didn't care for the bun with the hot dog or the other noodle dish. Later that day, my daughter mentioned she had found hair in a pork bun and that her cousin had eaten it. She also said every item he picked up had hair on it, which was disappointing. I didn't confirm this with my cousin, but it would have been helpful to have someone inform the staff. Fortunately, no one at our table found hair in their food, which was a relief. Overall, the food that I ate was fine, but I wouldn't make a special trip from San Jose to visit again...unless it's a fambam family treat.

FAMILY EVENTS When I…read morego to eat at Chef's Experience China most of the time the occasion is for family gatherings. The year 2024 was the prime example. In February I ate for reception after a family friend's funeral. In June relatives and friends ate here after my nephew's high school graduation. Later that year in September I came here to celebrate my dad's birthday. There's something about this place that attracts family gatherings. Is it the food? The food here tasty and filling. Could it be the ambiance? The Chef's Experience China Bistro is a small restaurant. There are three dining areas. There is one at the side that is used for a banquet, which is the same space that was used for my dad's birthday party. In the middle there is a general dining area. At the back is a small section that could be used for a party - the same area that was used for my nephew's high school graduation celebration. I think what makes this place attractive is the bar when you enter the restaurant. How's the food? I like the stuffed eggplant, which is similar to eggplant parmesan. What I like about the orange chicken is the sauce is served on the side preserving the crispy breading. The sautéed vegetables aren't oily. Even though the menu doesn't seem overwhelming with items there are variety of items served at Chef's Experience China Bistro that you don't see at other Chinese restaurants. Since I mentioned about the bar I've order beverage such as Old Fashioned, Mint Julep, and Shirley Temple. I can't explain it but there is something about the vibe at Chef's Experience China Bistro that makes this restaurant a popular place to celebrate with the family.

We would order this every time we come back. Seafood fried rice had a good amount of mixed seafood and NO PEAS! Yaaaaay! Lol Sweet and sour chicken - surprisingly, this is the dish that stood out the most. The chicken tasted fresh and was juicy. In a lot of other places the chicken is more solid and dry. Not this dish. Without the add-on Salt, Peppers and Garlic, these were more to our liking, though some Garlic would have been nice. Fish Fillet with Black Bean Sauce - (5) - I grew up eating fresh fish from live tanks in Chinese Restaurants. They were either cooked with Black Bean Sauce or Ginger & Scallion. Post COVID, many restaurants have done away with their live tanks. Frozen fillets will never taste or feel like freshly dispatched fish, but these were pretty decent. Assorted Seafood Chow Fun (5) - Fish, Calamari and Shrimp. Used to be a time where you could expect a scallop or two, but those days are mostly gone.
