Quick & delicious-- Came here two days in a row for lunch! This restaurant has been here since 1988 & is the definition of a hidden gem. They are tucked away in the hills of Hayward, but also close to Cal State East Bay. I am a sucker for quick lunches. At China Best Restaurant, not only is it affordable, you get massive portions. Each meal is cooked to order so you're getting steaming hot & homemade food. You should expect a ~15-20 minute wait for your food, but I promise it's worth it! Their menu is quite large, but very easy to read & makes sure that everyone has something to eat. I was excited to try their beef with bitter melon combo (comes with chow mein & steamed rice)! I chose the black bean sauce. The second day, I ordered the same combo, but asked them to sub the beef with chicken. They happily accommodated my request & quickly took my order over the phone. I was not prepared for the amount of food that was piled into that takeout container-- and for only $15 too! Each combo could easily be 2-2.5 meals. Both days, the beef and the chicken were succulent but still had the right amount of chew. The bitter melon was cooked exactly how I like it, still had a nice crunch! The noodles were seasoned lightly, which was a nice change of flavor for typical Chinese restaurants where everything is overly salty! They have plenty of seating if you're looking to dine in rather than order takeout. The restaurant presents itself as a fairly standard place to eat because the food speaks for itself. No need for fancy decorations. I will say, the restaurant is very clean which I appreciate. Next time I'm around, I'll dine in so I can try out a bowl of soup. Make sure you ask for some chili oil, I'm not sure if it's house made but it's a nice Szechuan style chili oil and it goes so well with the chow mein! read more

A friend recommended this restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised. It's quaint with a half dozen tables. We arrived about an hour before they closed and it wasn't very busy with eat in customers. The owner served us and was so sweet and helpful. We ordered beef with vegetables, sweet and sour chicken, wonton soup and pork fried rice. The food was so fresh and delicious. I really liked the walnut prawns here. I got the lunch special which came with rice and a fried wonton. The batter was light and crispy, however I could have done with less of the mayo sauce. The rice had some hard, overcooked bits which were not fun to accidentally bite into, so I had to eat extra cautiously. We also ordered best orange chicken lunch special with chow mein and rice. It was really good as well. Overall, it was a lot of food for the value and the lady working was really sweet. I might just order ala carte next time. read more

This is definitely a hidden gem in the Hayward Highland area near California State University, East Bay. Located inside University Plaza, is China Best, which serves up good Chinese foods at a very reasonable price with good sized portions. Everything here is cooked fresh to order, so everything is very fresh, tasty and delicious. The portions here are very generous, they definitely don't skimp out on the portions. To start off, I would give this place a 3.5/5. Main reason is the sweet and sour pork doesn't have that fresh taste to it. When my order was ready, the plate was very hot, and as I bit into the sweet and sour pork it was a little crispy but almost had a somewhat frozen texture that is hard to describe. The onions and bell peppers also had this frozen texture as it was hard and not really soft and grilled. The sauce is okay and the rice was also okay. However, the portion is huge and definitely filled me up. Employees are also very friendly and attentive. read more

Upon nearing the place you will notice a boarded up window, which has been there for months. Also, the lighted sign overhead is flickering in a glaring display of neglect. The food is bland. The lunch combo comes with unflavored white rice and plain noodles which look like they've been through a soy sauce bath. The interior is a bit of a storage unit for boxes. We have ordered from China Best Restaurant about 3x or so. 2x for lunch and 1x for dinner. By far, the food at lunch was SO much better aka fresh and we enjoyed the combos, which included plain chow mein noodles and rice. The Lemon Chicken and Green Onion and Ginger Chicken were cooked well and had great flavor without being overly salty. Now their dinner was an entirely different story. The Salt and Pepper Pork was horrible. The meat tasted old, gamey, and was the worst that we've had as this is our go-to dish. No amount of breading or salt could save it and the portions were large and no leftovers were eaten. The potatoes in the Curry Chicken were sliced thin and were too al dente for my liking, but others might like it this way. The flavors weren't bad but felt disjointed. The Beef Chow Fun was fine. Would we get food from here again? Still debating as prices were good for the portions, but if so, it would only be for lunch. read more

It is a small Chinese restaurant and aiming to serve the community so I can't expect top of the line fancy Chinese restaurant. My family has been getting takeout from this place fairly often ever since covid started. The owner is such a sweet lady!!! She always has a smile on her face, suggests things if you don't know what to order, gives drinks on the house time to time. Their food is also very very cheap. We usually get salt & pepper pork, orange fish, combination chow fun, and eggplant chicken all for about $40. Unheard of in the bay. The restaurant is still takeout style and does not have indoor seating. This is my normal order! And I get it often because it's quite literally, the best! It's breaded, which I like. This place is close to Cal State East Bay near Bronco Billy's Pizza. Right now they have no dine in service but you can order by food delivery app or phone in to pick up. They are pretty quick. If you are craving Chinese this is a great option to try out. They give fortune cookies as well with your order. What a great value for good Chinese food. Coming from LA, I was pleased with the quality of the cooking and the fair prices. I have no reason to go into this area of Hayward, but ended up in the neighborhood because of an emergency vet visit next door recommended by the Urgent Care Vet in San Leandro. It might be an overstatement for them to call themselves China Best. They are definitely not the best but also not the worst. Perhaps China Somewhat Above Average is more suitable for the restaurant. I've been here on two occasions and the food was acceptable on both trips. The first trip I ordered the Prawns Chow Fun. The second trip I ordered Chicken String Beans and Chicken Fried Rice. The similarities for all three dishes are the greasiness. Don't expect your personal trainer to be happy about what you're about to devour. The food could be a bit greasy but that's Chinese food. I thought the dishes were well prepared. I do wish there was more prawns in the chow fun. And I'm also pretty sure the prawns were frozen beforehand. The chicken string beans and chicken fried rice were more than acceptable. Just make sure to have a jug of water after the meal to quench the high sodium intake. The service is usually pretty efficient. I made my orders through the phone and the order is ready for pick up in 10-15 minutes. The restaurant also have the capacity to seat at least 30 people. You can chose to dine in or order to go. They also offer combinations if you don't want to order a la carte. Parking is easy as well. The lot is rarely full. This place been around for ages. I remember trying them a few times years ago and didn't think they were that great. Recently started coming again and stuff actually tastes good. Certain things that is. I got some kind of noodle soup and it was bland. Kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, ma po tofu modified to have pork in it were all pretty good.
