Outstanding breakfast. Huge portions great service. Bella was our server. Really good

I kid you not, this is the best french toast I've ever had. It wasn't too soggy or dry. All of the ingredient, like the cream and strawberries, blended well together. It also wasn't too sweet, which I was afraid of. The wait was about 30 minutes for a party of one (me) but it was totally worth it. It was a very upbeat and diner-like environment. I would recommend and will 100% be eating here the next time I'm in Chicago.

I loved the vibe of this place especially their 90s R&B hits that they were playing. Josh, our server, was super attentive. I loved the fantastic service! Wow, the portions are ginormous and good! I'd definitely come back here in the near future. I had such a pleasant breakfast!

Let's first start by saying that I had the MOST amazing food experience at the Honeybear Cafe! I 1000% recommend! Now, lol the journey here was very trying. Got drenched via unexpected rain ie my mom had a baby umbrella that we had to share BUT lol the taste of the food had my inner fatty disregard my wet toes, my wet shorts, and my wet shirt. Since I heard about the typical wait time, I made a reservation that allowed us to be seated quickly (so, that's a pro-tip). Upon seating, I immediately skimmed the menu and saw the dishes that were screaming my name, the Shrimp and Grits and the Trio French Toast Flight. The portions were massive, the price was very affordable, and the taste of ALL of my food was absolutely AUHMAZING. Whenever I'm back in the Chi, this is definitely a place that I would always visit and I would recommend that you do the same.

Still my family's favorite breakfast spot! Now they take reservations, which is smart, because they are always busy! The chairs lined up outside attest to that. Even with a reservation recently we had to wait a few minutes, but it was not too long. Their menu is massive, so you're sure to find something you like. I love skillets and scramblers and they have several. Parking is the only downside, so come early...or during the week when it's not as crowded as the weekend!

Thankfully we had a reservation. Otherwise the host was quoting an hour wait for a table. We just had to wait a few minutes. That was fine because it gave me time to look at the menu. There are a lot of options on there!! If you have a large party with various preferences everyone can be accommodated. Jennifer was our server and she was just the greatest. Her smile and knowledge of the menu were appreciated. She made a few suggestions and then we went on to order. Food arrived very quickly, considering how crowded the place was. I was expecting a considerable wait. The food was fast but they took no shortcuts! Pecan pancakes were some of the best I've ever had in my life. Simply delicious. The bacon was thick and yummy.

I was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the food was. Our waitress was very nice as well. I ordered the Tres leche French toast which was not overly sweet. The steak skillet was sooo good, I honestly could have split with my husband but we had no clue how huge the servings were. We will definitely be back when we visit Chicago again.

This is my second time at Honeybear and it was as delicious as the first time. I had the chorizo skillet and churro french toast and it was soooo good. The churro french toast was my favorite.

This is a super cute spot for brunch. The interior was nicely decorate with "back to school" balloons and we were greeted with mini cheesecakes at our table. My skillet was delicious and a large portion. The strawberry French toast was delightful too. I highly recommend coming here and sharing a few items.

As soon as we landed in Chicago, we drove up north to check out Honeybear Cafe, something Hubs had found because he did his research, okay? Y'all know we will travel for food... TUH! Listen, the menu is extensive. So many options, so many variations. You can have this, swap this for that, add a third, okay?! The coffee was amazing. I think I had an Americano or something, but whatever it was, it was totally amazing. The fruit was fresh. The food was delicious. The portions are huge, and the flavors taste like they were made with love. And listen, the cheesecake, child! That is on a whole other level. She gave us some samples, and oh my gosh! I need to have that thing shipped to me. Then she suggested some kind of roux or sauce for the catfish. Oh. My. God. The buss-down was crazy! The vibe? The ambiance? Chef's kiss. The people? Listen, that's home. Chi-Town is my home... born and raised. Even though I'm from there, this time I wanted to experience Chicago as a tourist, without our kids, who are now young adults. The decor was totally vibey, divey, and all the things. They had real plants, and since I'm a new plant mom, of course I was loving every bit of that. I'm like, okay! Monsteras up in that joker piece! They also had fresh flowers on the tables, which was such a nice touch. Our waitress was phenomenal! Because I waited so long to write this review, I don't remember her name, but I'm telling you, she was amazing. She treated us like tourists, okay? She listened when we explained that we were doing the Chicago tourist thing and gave us the full experience. I loved that she took that into consideration, so kudos to her! There was also a young girl celebrating her birthday with her family, and it was so adorable watching her little sister run over to their family members. The whole place just had such a warm, welcoming, at-home feeling. We truly enjoyed ourselves, and I even walked away with a shirt because I loved the ones the staff was wearing. It was the perfect little homage to my hometown. Honeybear Cafe, we will definitely be back!

Honeybear was such a treat! But be aware there can definitely be a wait, so plan ahead or book a reservation. The restaurant is a decent size, but it's just very busy in general. The menu is humongous with so many delicious options. I had leftovers for days. The coffee drinks were really good. Even with it being busy, our waitress was prompt and fast. It also didn't take long for our food and drinks to come out. Will definitely return.

French toast and eggs

My niece came into town for her birthday and was really excited to check out Honeybear Café because of its popularity on TikTok. Honeybear is a perfect example of how a strong social media following can help you build a successful restaurant almost anywhere. There really isn't much happening around 7036 N. Clark Street, it's a pretty typical far North Side Chicago area with not a lot going on, but Honeybear definitely stands out. They even have a beautiful mural on the side of the building that makes for a great photo opportunity. When we arrived, there were probably about 20 people ahead of us, and the wait was around 30 minutes. So, if you're planning to go, definitely be prepared to wait a little. Once we got inside, the restaurant was pretty packed, but the waitstaff was super helpful and did a great job helping us navigate the menu. I will say that I think the menu would benefit from having more pictures. The descriptions of the food are OK, but it would be much more helpful if they highlighted some of the especially popular items, the dishes that people are seeing and getting excited about online. Most of the menu items are à la carte, but my niece and I decided to go with the combos so we could get more for our money. We both got the French toast. I got mine with eggs, breakfast potatoes, and turkey bacon, while I believe my niece got the chicken sausage. Honestly, the food was just OK. Everything was cooked well, and there wasn't anything wrong with the meal. I did have to send the turkey bacon back because I like mine extra crispy, but they were happy to take care of it. The breakfast potatoes were solid as well. That said, I'm a big stickler for breakfast food, and nothing about my meal really wowed me. My niece actually felt pretty much the same way. Considering the hype surrounding Honeybear and the amount of time we had to wait for a table, it personally wasn't worth it for me. I would probably have to go back and try some of their more popular menu items to really understand what all the hype is about. It was a decent, solid meal, but my standards for breakfast are pretty high. I've been to plenty of hole-in-the-wall spots in Chicago that have blown me away with the quality of their food. This is also the city that gave us the original House of Pancakes, and in terms of flavor, I don't think Honeybear comes anywhere close. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means the food didn't live up to the expectations created by the hype for me. However, if you're willing to wait and stick with some of their more popular dishes, you may have a better experience. For this first visit, I can't give Honeybear more than 3 out of 5 stars.

Churro french toast, links, and bacon

Simply good. The parking, the prompt seating, the service, and most importantly the food! Everything was good. Im not the biggest breakfast lover, so I either love it, or hate it. And this place passed the vibe check. We did make a resy just to be on the safe side, but it wasn't needed or asked for honestly. We stopped in on a Thursday at 1030, and although it was packed there wasnt a wait and the food was out in no time after ordering. I had the churro french toast with sausage links and bacon. All of it was delicious. I would definitely come again when I'm off during the week, I probably wouldn't attempt a weekend day.

How, despite living in the general area, has it taken me two years to stop in? Ordinarily, this…read morewould be a rhetorical question, except in this case, I have an answer. I am telling on myself not for clout, but as a cautionary tale that you do not repeat my mistakes. You see, I lumped in Ezankaya with Ye Olde Stereotypical Thai place. You know the one, with the same copy-paste Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. I am very pleased to report that Ezankaya is not that. I had the pleasure of trying: Crab Rangoons, Hamachi Crudo, Khoa Soi with Beef, and a Citrus Magic Blue (non-alcoholic) beverage. The Crab Rangoons were hot, fresh, and flavorful, and without the taste of old oil. The wonton was thin and crisp without greasiness. The filling, albeit a little on the sweet side, as is typical of Thai interpretations, hit the right spot in this rangoon-lover's heart. The Hamachi Crudo, while not my favorite dish as a matter of personal taste and preference alone, was well executed. The slices of fish were generously thick and allowed to shine. The ponzu dressing bestowed a light acidic brightness to the hamachi and the greens below. Now, while I appreciate the thought and sentiment behind the jalapeño and tobiko, I didn't feel this was enough to elevate this appetizer beyond a citrusy fish. Then we arrive at the Khoa Soi. A dish with warming spices (though not spicy), and fantastic turmeric curry flavor. There was a balanced amount of meat, and while not shy about the noodles, this appears to be by design. In the scope of the dish, everything just worked. I also loved that chili oil and some veggies are offered on the side, that they may be added to taste, and maintain their freshness and bite. The Citrus Magic Blue was a unique and delectable beverage. There were light coconut notes, a hint of acid, and that indescribable flavor which comes from butterfly pea flowers. If you're okay with a little sweetness, this is worth getting. The service here was fantastic! The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Bonus points for calling out that the Khoa Soi with chicken is bone-in and would need some work. The food came out fast, also, despite the restaurant being busy. The vibe, for lack of a better term, is maximalist. There is a ton of color and Asian/Thai/Japanese-inspired decor. In the face of an increasing number of establishments going for the same, neutral, boring feel, I love that Ezankaya is not shy about using color, fun, and perhaps even whimsy. Finally, there is the matter of price. When the bill came, I was already mentally prepared for a gut punch. However, despite two appetizers, a main, and a non-alcoholic beverage, the prices came below expectations. Sure, it's not cheap per se, but when a McDonald's QPC and small fry costs $9, cheap as we knew it isn't on the menu anywhere. Final verdict: Ezankaya excels in all the ways that count. They have unique, interesting, well-executed, and delicious food. The only items I didn't love were a matter of personal taste, and not a failure on the kitchen's part. The experience is rounded off with excellent service, a fun vibe, and reasonable prices. Would recommend?: Hands down, yes. The menu is approachable and contains both Thai and Japanese items. Bring some friends, try some more food, and enjoy! Would return?: Absolutely, and I look forward to exploring more of their Thai and Japanese menus.
