The place is old in its ambiance and can use an update but I'm not from the area so not sure if this area is just a bit outdated. The donuts- they were so average- I don't even think my donut was made the same day- it was a bit dry and hard. Maybe they only make the popular ones frequently / daily ? If I can give it a 0 star I would. Worst place in the area. It is unbelievable the times I have gone to buy donuts for my family and they always seem to complain about one thing or another. They told me i need to go back and pay with a different money bill . Make sure your bills are fresh from the bank because they don't take credit/debit, $100/$50 bills or bills with a small tear. This review is 35+ yrs in the making. Yes, I visited this place EVERY SINGLE MORNING, for two school years, Monday thru Friday without fail. Even on the faithful morning of the Whittier narrows earthquake. I lived thru it in their parking lot. I have searched high and low for a plain buttermilk bar that might slightly be compared to theirs, and I have yet to find any. Mind you, I haven't been here since the summer of '89, so I'm not sure if the quality remains. Their plain buttermilk bars were PERFECT!!! Crispy and crunchy on the outside, not too doughy but not too airy on the inside. Perfect balance of buttermilk. Every single donut shop I have visited since then doesn't even come close. The majority, their plain buttermilk bars are stale, 2 or 3 days old, with too much dough in the center, making them inedible. Mind you, this review is for the plain buttermilk bar ONLY, not the shop nor the service. That's why it gets 5s. If anyone has visited this place recently and ordered the plain buttermilk bar, please let me know. Also, if anyone knows of a shop that has higher quality plain buttermilk bars, also let me know. Being in this area real rarely, I was searching for a spot with Thrifty's/Rite Aid ice cream but a donut also sounded good. So, this was the one place that had both that we could find. Their donuts were plentiful in selection. At first, I thought that might not be a good thing. I was glad that I was wrong. I ordered a dozen donut holes. Unfortunately, what I got was 10, not 12. Maybe it was 10 for $1. I am not sure. The sales person didn't tell me. It was something having to do with the portions being larger than what they put on a cone. So, that was the reason for the prices being a little higher. OK. Whatever. This spot was the only one on that side of town that had the brand ice cream that my friends and I wanted. We went to a few other spots but they'd either run out of ice cream or they didn't have their full selection, some Rite Aid stores were waiting for delivery and others were defrosting their coolers for mainetnance. Whatever. Anyway, so the prices were a bit more than what we'd expected. THat's OK. At least their donuts were tasty. I ordered a chocolate iced twist and the dozen donut holes. Like I mentioned before, I got 10 and not 12. I shared those donut holes with 3 other people. I primarily ate the chocolate twist on my own. That was good. It was soft inside. The chocolate on the outside wasn't too sweet or too thick. I thought the donut wasn't going to be all that fresh but I was wrong. They weren't stale at all. I also ordered a apple fritter for someone else. They were surprised too that it was good as it was. I understand that this spot has been in business for over 30 years and by the same family. I found Homestyle by sweet serendipity. Ok so I got a flat tire on the 5 and after TWO hours waiting for AAA I decided I needed a donut or two in my life. I Yelped and low-and-behold I was directed to Homestyle. Things to know: CASH only. I keep a stash of ones around (don't judge me) so this is never a problem It's located inside a tight little strip mall with tiny ass parking spaces. No worries, you'll be in and out. $7 gets you a dozen of round donuts and $8 gets you a dozen of mix These donuts are everything! They are huge and fluffy and have just the right amount of sugar, or coconut, or chocolate. They put them in a pink box so you know they'll be dank. Grood! When I lived on the westside, I had a coffee bean about 2 blocks away. When my Mother visited, she would wake up at the ungodly hour at which all Moms wake up, take my keys and walk there to drink a chai tea and read the paper. My Mother was against my moving, for a variety of irrational reasons, one of which was that she wouldn't have a place to get coffee within walking distance (to give you a sense of how irrational this objection is, my Mother usually visits me about 4 days per year. Yeah. But I digress . . .). Knowing she'll be visiting soon, and looking for confirmations of her objections to my new spot, I've been on the lookout for an appropriate new AM hangout for her. In short, I've had no luck at all. Nestle cappacinos and instant coffee abounds, but no real cafes within walking distance. Defeat. And then . . . the other day I noticed a sign at Home Style Donuts reading "Espresso, Cappucino." Intrigued, but with low hopes, I decided to do some recon. And I found it. It was there all along, in front of my face; it's clean (A-rated), uses a REAL espresso machine, has friendly service and actually tastes like coffee. All that, and the prices are affordable!!! In short, SO GOOD! As if that weren't enough, Home Style is open 24 hours a day. One more reason I love my new home. Me: one, Mother: none. Hurrah! I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. In middle school and high school, I'd stop by this place to buy donuts or ice-cream before class. Their donuts are actually fluffy and not too heavy, but my favorite treat to get is the blueberry cream cheese pastry, totally blanking out on the name right now, but it's delicious. My mom likes their regular coffee and I like their ice blended mocha. The space is really the community's, which I love. You typically see local, older folks throughout the day, especially in the morning and at night, sitting around drinking their coffee. I like that. Definite hole-in-the-wall gem of the area. Went here at 2 in the morning like many other reviews have suggested. These donuts were some of the best I've ever had fresh and way above par even 12 hours later. These donuts are not the ones you get from Krispy Kremes. If anything, these rings of heavenly goodness are the polar opposite (what would that make Krispy Kremes then?). Obviously this is a matter of taste. The donuts are big. They aren't hollowed out ala Krispy Kremes but they aren't cake like either. The dough tastes fantastic and offers that chewy, fresh baked good feel. Everything is pretty much balanced so it (I tried chocolate, glazed, and sugar) is not overly sweet.
