i've used home cake decorating supply before. they had everything i needed when i wanted to make candy for a work event, and i go straight there whenever i need something a little weird because i know they'll have it. it's a cool little neighborhood place with nice people and hidden treasures. now, though, i love home cake decorating supply. during the covid-19 shutdown, the owner has been amazing. when we were considering what to do about food during the shutdown, i figured we could just make bread if we needed to. after our yeast was too old and failed miserably, i couldn't find bread yeast anywhere. then i found out that home cake was offering no-contact curbside pickup or delivery of staples: yeast, flour, baking powder, and cream of tartar. working with dave was incredibly easy, and he was very careful to maintain a safe distance at all times. when this is over, all y'all need to come here. they have everything you need for baking and tons of cool stuff you didn't know you wanted, and their community spirit deserves to be rewarded. read more

I bought a perfectly wonderful rotating cake stand for $12. She walked through all of them, top-tier ($70ish or more) to a beginner's stand, mine. I've been making cakes a long time. This store and the owner know the business. I had a wonderful experience here looking both for supplies and guidance. It is a well equipped store with tons of options for decorative as well as fundamental items (cake boards, pans, boxes, etc). Customer service was excellent - I had questions about the best approach to my design and the proprietor gave me practical solutions. I was able to get everything I needed at very reasonable prices plus an excellent icing recipe. There were other customers throughout my stay and I felt everybody got their proper attention. I've heard a lot of good things about this place, and it's near my house. I'm an experienced hobby cake decorator, so having a supply shop near by is helpful. Sadly, I experienced more bad than good. The woman doesn't seem to understand organization. There is a huge table of chocolate molds, but they are also scattered around the store. It's cramped! The place was kinda busy when I went, and if someone was in the same aisle you were in, you basically had to walk out of the store, through the maze to get around the person. I never thought a cake decorating store could stress me out so much. I HATE having to ask where everything else, she's clearly busy, but her organizational system is this: Shipment comes in-she throws it wherever she can find a spot. This is a great spot if you are looking for off the wall things (and have time to find them) like sugar in 20 different colors (Which, you can do at home with some sugar and a little food coloring) or whipped cream stabilizer. But if you want a nice selection of supplies, with more organization, I head down to the Jo-Ann's in Tukwila. They always have coupons, usually the Wilton stuff is on super sale (30% off or more), and they have about three aisles of stuff. I'm more liking to order online than set foot into that cake decorating store again. Oh, and also, the prices are pretty high. I'd say there's at least a 10% mark-up over Jo-Ann's or Wilton online. Parking is terrible, plan on parking in the street if you check out this disaster. On a final note, the woman who runs it isn't exactly a people's person. She rudely assumes that she knows more than anyone there, and while standing inline, I got the feeling that people who are regulars seem to worship her as a cake goddess. CAKE HEAVEN!!!!!! I recently started making cakes as a side business... i'm not talking you're mom's yellow cake... I'm talking fondant covered hand painted and sculpted works of art (yes I am very proud can you tell?) anyways this place has been a godsend. Greil is freaking amazing! I never go in there expecting to be out quickly and damit I'm fine with that because if she's willing to take 30 minutes to talk to the frazzled soccer mom stuck making cupcakes for her 10 year olds bake sale I know she'll be happy talking to me for just as long about the finer points of crumb coating a cake. She'll never ever EVER let you leave buying something you don't need. If you tell her what you're doing she'll look at your basket and say "You really don't need this, a toothpick works just as well" and TRUST THIS WOMAN! i don't know how she is so amazingly knowledgeable but she is. Her products she has are (other than hard to find in that mess unless your there twice a month like me) of the highest quality. Her cake boards are super durable, she has sugar molds in tons of shapes, big daddio's bake ware which is the best, and fondant... oh my god her fondant is spectacular! It's so easy to use and she sells it in convenient 1 and 2 pound units in white, ivory, black, and tons of other colors in between. I'll be honest, I just started making cakes a few months ago and everytime I've had a question she has given me a logical easy to understand answer... and the first cake that turned out slightly disasterous she told me exactly what I did wrong and gave me tips for the future. I love that this place is so close to my house, because I have had to rush here for emergency fondant in the past (they open at 10 am on Saturdays and there's usually a line of people outside with their own cake emergency waiting to rush home). This place has almost everything you need, and if they don't have it, you can easily have it ordered. It's packed to every nook and cranny, and sometimes it just is overwhelming (and a bit unorganized). You will probably find things you didn't even realize existed and "absolutely HAVE" to have. The lady that owns this place is very helpful. She will stand there and talk you through every project you have and even will talk you out of buying unnecessary products as well so you don't waste your time or money. She was amazingly wonderful and patient with me when I was making my first wedding cake order, and continues to be ever so helpful with each new order I take as well. Heck, she's even so trustworthy that one time I realized I forgot to grab something and I had already paid that she said, "oh I know you'll be back, just pay for it next time." I didn't know whether to think she was crazy or not, but then I realized, "oh wait...I've been coming here every other day for the past 2 weeks...she knows I'm coming back...damn, I'm a regular now." I absolutely adore this place and could live here and spend hours going through the stuff here. The boyfriend is driven crazy by what he considers "clutter and unorganized mess." I run a cupcake business on the side, and I was at odds to where I should get my supplies from. The restaurant supply stores in Seattle didn't have specific baking necessities I needed. Luckily I found Home Cake along Roosevelt (another plus that it wasn't in Bellingham or Renton), which was on my way home from work along Roosevelt in the Maple Leaf neighborhood. The parking is a little difficult, from the way the slots are in this little strip mall building. So try to find parking on the street. If you're a soccer mom baking cupcakes for her kid's class or a professional self-employed start up baker, you can find anything you may need to decorate. There are cake pans, ready made fondant, candy flowers, sugar decorations, ribbon, candles, chocolate melts in dark or milk (and in colors), and the most important items I go in mostly for: bakery cake boxes with inserts and boards. I'd hate to give away my "secret" supplier (this place makes my work look so professional), but Home Cake has saved me in a cupcake order emergency on more than 1 occasion. I can be here for hours looking through everything and end up buying more than what I originally came for. read more

I love this store... It's the cake pan equivalent of my favorite yarn shop: Acorn Street (A little cramped/slightly confusing, but chock full of goodies you didn't know you needed). No matter where you go, baking supplies (pans, pastry tips, cake stands, etc) are going to be spendy. That's just a fact of life. If I'm going to shell out the bucks for any of it though, I'd rather spend it here than a Sur la Table or Williams and Sonoma (not that I don't enjoy lusting after the goodies there too). The woman who runs this shop is super knowledgeable/helpful, and quick to offer suggestions or substitutions if you can't find quite what you're looking for.... though if you can't find it here, you're definitely not going to find it in any of the chain shops around town. As soon as I entered, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff that is crammed into this place! It's total chaos and is a mess, but you are bound to get what you need and then some. Or that stacking cake pans are easier to store, but make frosting a cake a sloping sides a pain? The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the assortment of pans and sizes is pretty inspiring. Something about seeing some items and knowing that other home bakers are doing it makes it a bit less intimidating, right? There were a few novelty cake pans for kids, but the majority would be right at home in almost any baker's home kitchen, novice or pro. It may seem cluttered, but so many items are so small that it makes discovering things a bit of a joy. There were a few things that were WTF, but then I would turn around and see how it would be used, e.g., truncated Barbie torso for a doll cake. My mom took me here as a little girl to buy pre-tempered chocolate, chocolate molds and lollipop sticks - I loved making chocolate pops for class parties or to decorate birthday cakes for my dad. And, of course, we always had impulse buys like edible metallic paint and cute sprinkles. The place has not changed one bit in those twenty years: It is cleaner than my basement, but certainly as cluttered. Items are grouped together so I wouldn't exactly call it disorganized, but there just isn't enough space for all of the decorating goodness! Oh, and not really any signage to guide customers (but who cares since it is all so fun to look at?). It does take a good amount of time to get in and out since there is just one woman to ring you up and she is always patiently and thoroughly answering questions. When I was there, there was a line with four people in front of me, three of which had "a quick question" that actually led to a few other points of conversation. I didn't mind since the lady was super nice and I learned a few things by eavesdropping. When it came my turn, I was impressed that Super Sales Lady (pretty sure she's the owner) pointed out that there was an item in my basket that I probably didn't need and another that was likely the wrong size. I think it is seriously impressive when a store owner puts my needs in front of the easy sale. Three stars for the claustrophobia I had while in the store and lack of sales help (not that there'd be a place for a second employee!). One more knowledgeable sales person and some clear signage and it'd be a 5-star place. Oh, and don't even try to park in that tiny, awkward nightmare of a lot... I just recently moved to Seattle and was looking for my new "go to" baking supply store. I'm so glad I went to Home Cake Decorating Supply!! The selection was amazing and the service was even better. It takes a lot of energy to go through all of the piles of stuff in the store whether you're looking for something specific or just browsing. Yes, as other reviewers have said, this place is PACKED full of awesome supplies, and yes, it is chaotic. But, if you are willing to give Home Cake a chance, I believe you will not regret it. I was asked if I needed help and when I showed her (I believe it was the owner) the pic on my phone of the iced cupcakes I wanted to replicate, she gave me a thorough (yet not too lengthy) explanation of what would work best. I had high expectations of this place after reading the on-line reviews. But, honestly, I was disappointed. It was dirty. It was disorganized. And I really didn't see that good of a selection of cake pans. Maybe they were there, but I couldn't find them in the clutter. I must say, however, that she had a good selection of decorating sugars at an excellent price, and a wide variety of cupcake liners. I don't use fondant, but many people in the store seemed to be stopping in to buy that item, so I assume it is competitively priced as well. There was a wide variety of decorating tips, and food colors, too. The salesperson seemed knowledgeable, but seriously, this place is so disorganized I was completely put off. My new favorite place to shop!! As I'm getting more into baking- I'm stocking up on supplies as I need them. :) There are so many decorative & creative things you just cannot find in the baking section at your local grocery store or dept store. The owner is very helpful. I have a hundred questions and each time she is patient & gives me the best options. When I was in there the other day this guy came in that had lost a bet with his cousin and needed to make a pineapple upside down cake. He picks up a pineapple shaped baking pan and is clueless on the rest! As I was looking around I heard her walking him through what he needed to make his "punishment". Although, it sounds super fun to me~ Maybe he'll find that he enjoys it. :) The parking lot can be a little tricky. I parked in one spot that had a divot and caused me to scrape under the bumper.
