Sure, maybe I'm completely ignorant of freezers, their models, and that there are differing prices etc. but that's why I called, so I could get an idea. This is one of those old-school businesses that has it all. While being specific to the restaurant industry, it feels more like a friendly general store than anything else. The staff knows their business inside and out and the banter is relaxed and friendly. I went in there to replace a few pieces of my Homer Laughlin dinerware, you know, that nice heavy off-white china that a lot of restaurants use. I bought my original pieces at thrift stores in Philadelphia, then some more pieces in Raleigh, NC, at a restaurant supply store, and over the years, some of them had gotten broken and I no longer had a full set. With a dinner party of 7 people at my house on Friday night, I snapped about the mismatched dishes that I was going to have to put on my table. That led to the little journey from my downtown office to Dick's, conveniently located on 1st Ave just south of town. Anyway, one of the guys behind the counter sized me up, knew that I was new to the store (immediately) and not only asked me what I needed, but in a totally cheerful way took me right to it. And it turned out that in the back, he had half a pallet of one of the pieces I needed, and enough of the rest to piece my set back together. He teased me about only buying 6, saying he'd give me a better price on a couple of hundred... but where would I put them? :-) This store is not really meant for the home cook unless you're serious about it. You have to buy dishes ("smallware" in the trade) in units of 6 or 12, which might be more than you need or want. Still, their prices are really good, especially considering what it costs to ship the stuff if you buy it online! It's heavy, and fragile(ish), so shipping usually costs more per dish than the dish itself... but not so at Dick's. It's a good thing I was in a hurry or I would have been desperate to shop for aprons, knives, mixing bowls and maybe even a tocque (what a conceit!) LOL As it was, I paid my bill and left with a nicely-wrapped box of dinerware dishes. They do have everything, and if you are serious about cooking at home, you should check them out. They are way cheaper than Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table, etc., and the stuff is meant to last forever and to take a lot of abuse. It won't be as pretty as La Creuset, but you'll get great service out of anything you buy at this store. read more

After some nice detailed suggestions from Bob G. I came in here looking for some aprons. The store was easy to find. The parking lot is a bit confusing, because it only has one entrance/exit at the far end. I found the apron I wanted, and I asked this nice lady if the apron I found out of the bag was the same as in the picture. She took it from me and shook it open, and just as I thought she was gonna hand it over to me, she put it on. The lady, in her mid 40's and pretty damn attractive I might add, put it on tight and practically modeled it for me. I thought it was funny, and hot at the same time. "How's that look? Is that what you want?" "Uhmmm... that looks good... that's what I want, I mean, I'll take it!" Again, a bit awkward, but I think she was trying to be funny. 10 bucks for the apron, and the cashier said he wouldn't charge me for his wife's modeling session. I only browsed for a bit, but they are wall to wall, floor to ceiling packed with restaurant supplies. I'm sure I'll be back for misc items. I'm in need of a new muddler. read more

So happy to have found this place! Sure it caters to professionals, but it also has much to offer regular folks like you and me. Particularly if you live in Columbia City/Beacon Hill/SODO/Georgetown and don't have a Target or similar place to get kitchen supplies nearby. I mean...who wants to fight the crowds at Sur La Table on a Saturday when you can breeze in and out of Dick's Restaurant Supply in 15 minutes? I wish I could do justice to all the things this store carries. You really have to see it for yourself. But think pots and pans, cookie sheets, cutting boards, knives, and many smaller kitchen gadgets (thermometers, zesters, etc.). I myself was looking for a donut cutter, which they had for just a few bucks. Also, the owner was so incredibly friendly and helpful. Seems like they supply many of the restaurants in Seattle, which is kind of cool. Don't you want to shop at the same place the amazing chefs from La Medusa do? Here's the deal though: you're not going to get the ambiance of Williams Sonoma, Crate & Barrel, or the aforementioned Sur La Table at Dick's. It is SODO after all. But you will find most of the same stuff for better prices. I will definitely be a repeat customer! read more

One of the best priced kitchen shops in Seattle! Well, it's not quite a kitchen shop or maybe it is. It's more like a restaurant supply shop but it does carry a lot of items that everyday cooks would want too. And at a fraction of the cost of those upscale kitchen shops. We were on the hunt for knives and not disappointed. They had great middle-of-the-road knives for a good price. Cutting boards, zest scrapers, dutch ovens, so many tongs and spatulas. They even had flatware and tea sets! The gadgets are incredible. Noodle makers, real panini grills, bar mixers and utensils. Then there is the back room. Filled with industrial sized baking and cooking equipment. The things you dream about when you want to run your own bakery. And best of all, lots of great cooking clothes and shoes. Comfy clothes to cook and stand in. Even a great idea for nurses. And the staff is just incredible. Friendly, helpful and won't shoo you out the door at closing time. Don't let the name fool you. I'm not even a good cook, but I came here looking for some new cutting boards that were dishwasher safe and not too damaging to my newly sharpened knives, and I left with a bunch of new kitchen toys. Yes, the name suggests that it is only for restaurants, but I was in shopping heaven in this place. I wandered every aisle to make sure I didn't miss anything I could possibly need for my kitchen. This place has way nicer stuff than the fancy kitchen places that people use for wedding registries, and for much better prices. The service was excellent, parking was free and convenient, and the store easy to find. The only slight detractor was they charge a 20% restocking fee on returned items. I'm a practical person and want things that will last, are useful, and easy to take care of. This place fits all of that. read more

Meh. The people working there were nice. The selection was so-so (when compared to restaurant supply stores in PDX and California), and the prices made my eyes pop out. I should mention that I hardly shop at Sur la Table or Williams Sonoma - I mostly get my kitchen supplies and gadgets online or at a restaurant supply store - so I may not be a good gauge to say what the value is when compared to these stores. Great for the commercial cook, so-so for the home cook. It wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be, and I was extremely disappointed that I couldn't find a digital scale for less than $50! It was my first time buying chef knives and attire and she was on standby ready to help. I don't think I've ever had this good of service before in my life really. If I had to buy kitchen supplies at a brick-and-mortar store, I'd much rather come to a place like this than one of those fancy-pants kitchen stores they have in malls. The essentials are all here -- pots and pans, from home-cook-sized to you-could-wash-a-doberman-in-it-sized; knives, Dexter and Mercer; kitchen appliances, cutlery, miscellaneous odds and ends. All good, utilitarian stuff. If I had to stock a kitchen in one day, I'd come here, load up, and be done. Given all that, the three star rating seems a bit harsh. I shaved off a star because all the products I looked at cost pretty much the full manufacturer's price. The only other restaurant supply shop I've been to is Kamei in San Francisco; from what I recall, the exact same products cost about 30% less there. Even taking shipping into account, it's cheaper to get most things online than to buy them here. The selection is also not huge; they only had one or two brands of most things. If you need some piece of kitchen kit *today*, this is probably the best place in town to look. Or if supporting a local business gives you warm-and-fuzzies, by all means, shop here. But if you just want to stock a no-frills kitchen and avoid spending more than necessary, you're better off shopping online. The search for a Kamei-type shop in Seattle continues. read more

I was excited to go and check this place out. I wasn't sure what they would have, so my first visit was a scope-out. There were definitely some items I am keeping in mind for the future--strong cooling racks for good prices, some nice bowls . . . Downsides--I wanted a Dutch oven like the fancy Creuset ones, but they only had the non-enameled ones. Boo. They are also a little far, which means that the savings on some items might not be worth it for the drive. If I am in the area when I need these items, then maybe. I was like a kid in a candy store here and found lots of goodies. The only thing that kept me from giving 4 or 5 stars is that for some stuff the prices were no better than Williams and Sonoma, but without the atmosphere. If you need restaruant sized equipment this is hands down the place to go. As the name suggests they are mainly a restaurant supply store, so their pricing and selection are setup to support this model first. Some times this is not the place for the home cook browsing for cutting boards or a single cupcake pan. I will be back, but I will shop carefully to make sure I am getting the best bang for my buck. read more

This is where I like to shop for most things for my kitchen. Everything works well and is sold at a fair price. Yesterday I found some great bottle cleaning brushes for my dog's Kong toys) which I had been looking for everywhere and not found. We have also bought knives and a variety of kitchen gadgets and utensils here, and have always been very pleased. The Man in back who sells equipment is worthless and basically likes to tell you what he knows not answers questions about what you need. Absolutely worthless. Then the person Man in front is also worthless and does not even ask you what he can help you with this man is sales prevention so negative. Whoever owbs this store needs to understand he is losing money. The only reason I shop here is because of Dia . Otherwise I would never step foot in this place. Very happy, worth the trip. I live up in the North end, and there are other (more expensive) options to the north. I needed to pick up some kitchen equipment for a charity I work with, and decided to trust my Yelp and got to Dick's. I walked in the door, and staff at the front asked me what I was looking for. He led me directly to the items (cutting boards if you must know). I had a curious 7 year old with me that had never seen kitchen equipment on scales quite this large. We wandered a bit, and friendly (non pushy) staff again asked us if we needed help. Prices were very solid, and I did my internet research. My wife and I are foodies par patheticness, and I will certainly be back to shop for my home kitchen. read more

I came to Dicks to check out a counter top oven, Salesman, Mike Dremann, helped me out and had terrible service. I asked some model if they have in stock and he said he did, and I asked if I can see it if it is the right oven, and he simple told me it is in box and gave me the model number, than he told me to look up my phone and check out picture from internet. He then told me how much it was, it was $700 over what Seattle Restaurant Store was selling for. I am sure he added $700 for his commission. I used to use Dick's when Todd was working there. He was very helpful and always offered best price and service. While this Mike, who is eager to steal your money. Higher end merchandise but they had a really economical kitchen tool and kitchen equipment. I found parts for my Vitamix which was great. The kitchen tools were very cheap and they had plenty of high quality material. I intend on coming back for more things. read more

I purchased a used double oven from Dick's in February2014 the top oven has never worked (used equipment is not gauranteed sold as is) AS per my conversation with Dick's sales person the oven was in good working order and was calibrated by the owner I drove from Tacoma to look at the oven it was very clean but no plugs on the cords not unusual so I asked how they tested the oven and was told they bring a power box over and plug it in that way. I agreed on the price plus delivery and the oven was delivered a few days later. Thats when I found out that the top oven did not work, also the fuses in the bottom oven were all blown I called Dick's and spoke to my sales person she promptly transferred me to the owner who again told me the oven was in good working condition when it left the warehouse, I was told again all used equipment is sold as is. I asked the owner to reccomend a company that services thier equipment, he recommended Polar Bear Mechanical I called them and a service man comes out to repair the oven after a couple of trips and $600.00 later my oven still does not work. Now here we are one year later my oven still does not work but I just got another bill from Polar Bear Mechanical for a service call I did not make to them they said Dick's won't pay for the initial call they made to Polar Bear Mechanical. The long and short of this comment is be very carful when purchasing used equipment from Dick's because I don't feel they are totally honest about the equipment they sale. John F. read more

After a mishap with a glass pitcher from Crate and Barrel, where I was trying to brew iced tea, the bottom cracked out, and 30+ oz of scalding tea went down my legs, I realized the best option for brewing tea in a pitcher would be a stainless steel option. Those are hard to find! Dicks had one! It was well priced...and I'm sittin pretty with my iced tea. Bought $10,000. plus worth of stuff from these guys, some new some used. One piece was consignment two years old but new and unwrapped, and a second piece they claimed was 1.5 years old. Had nearly $700. in repairs on the two pieces within two weeks of delivery. Bought in late 2010. They b__ll sh__ed me about repairs and failed to get back to me twice. I don't think I've ever been more insulted as an Asian-American female! I called yesterday to ask if they had a soup warmers in stock. The man helping me told me they had plenty, from "cheap Chinese versions" to more quality ones. After explaining exactly what I was looking for, he assured me (in a condescending tone) that he had plenty of experience in the industry and that NO ONE made a soup warmer with the specifications I was asking for. When I told him I was staring at it online, he quickly changed his tune. After looking up the item I was looking for, he began to explain to me that this particular brand was a "marginal brand". I was fine with that and attempted to ask more questions about pricing, whether they had it in stock, etc. He kept pushing his dislike of the brand. He never said the brand made lower quality products, that they weren't as reliable as some of the others, that they weren't rated as well, or even that it was "made overseas". What I got instead was "I don't know if you know anything about cars, but it's more like a Hyundai". Now, I wanted to be really sarcastic and ask if it had a 10-year/100,000 mile warranty, but I did not. Instead, I played along and asked "oh, so another 'cheap Chinese version'". His response was "EXACTLY!" When I ended the call and politely tried to explain to him the various other ways he could have phrased "cheap Chinese version" so as not to offended any other Asian customer who might call, he EXPLAINED to me that, basically, he was completely justified in saying that. He even went into more detail about "Chinese" made products. Wow! I'm glad to know that all asian products are pieces of crap. After leaving work, I drove home in my Nissan, made rice in my Zojirushi rice cooker, and contemplated how ignorant that idiot was while I watched Big Bang Theory on my LG TV. What makes it even worse is that the brand in question isn't even "Chinese" or "Asian" or "Foreign". It's a damn American brand! Ignorant moron! read more

If I could give them 10 stars I would. I have an extra deep farmhouse sink and the only faucet I could find that worked was a commercial pre-rinse unit with an add on spout that was 16" long made by Fisher Manufacturing. But, because of my pendant lighting I couldn't just go with a regular kit. I needed it to be 10 inches shorter. Barbara Dollahite at the SODO store worked with me to custom order each piece individually, shortening the spring, hose and riser to make it fit. I'm not a commercial buyer, I'm not going to be buying large orders over and over but they treated me like I was the most important person. In the middle of getting the specifications I had to put the order on hold because of a death in the family. Barbara kept everything at the ready and called me a week later not to check on the order but to ask how I was doing personally with my loss. If you have a chance to work with them you should, they are the kindest, most patient, helpful and professional people in the world. read more
