My husband is almost as nosy as I am when it comes to discovering new places. So when he said he…read morewanted to check out this new grocery store near southcenter, I was aghast to learn that there had been one under my nose this whole time. When he pulled into the parking lot, I knew exactly why I had missed it previously. Not only is the parking lot pretty narrow and single aisled, the concrete-blocked storefront itself is not obvious. I would assume it would be maybe the corporate office for the postal service or something similar. But definitely not a grocery store. With that being said, the storefront was clearly open and was easy to access. They had carts that were also easy to access, the aisles were clean and organized, although it was a 50/50 shot on value. It really depends on what you're looking for. But for the most part, protein sold in bulk was a great deal, along with other bulk goods like beans, pasta, grains, etc. I didn't really see that great of a discount on smaller individual items like spices or beverages, or even produce. Checking out was simple. Everyone made a single file line down and waited to cashiers to become available. Since the single file goes down the store to the right, it was difficult to see the cashiers. We waited about 10 minutes to be checked out. I'm not entirely sure if mostly working with other food service vendors and workers changes anything for the cashiers here, but I felt that it did lend a bit of a detached air from what you and I are used to in a more public grocery store. The employees, although they acknowledged everyone, were did not appear to manage the line (i.e.: calling out when a checker is ready, instead waiting for the customer to approach them), welcome or greet customers. They were having a few side conversations that halted traffic for a bit, but we have just arrived in time for a shift change, breaks, or something else similar. All in all, I felt the opportunity cost of all things given was enough to definitely return in the future. We made out like a bat out of hell with the bulk frozen ahi tuna and we'll be eating delicious dinner for the next couple weeks!

It's a restaurant supply-style store, with large quantity packaging and even an aisle dedicated to Asian groceries. Most items come in bulk, with meat packages often exceeding 10 lbs--great value for the price. I picked up 14 lbs of boneless pork cushion at just $1.79/lb, along with a pack of romaine lettuce and fresh green beans.

This is one of those old-school businesses that has it all. While being specific to the restaurant…read moreindustry, it feels more like a friendly general store than anything else. The staff knows their business inside and out and the banter is relaxed and friendly. I went in there to replace a few pieces of my Homer Laughlin dinerware, you know, that nice heavy off-white china that a lot of restaurants use. I bought my original pieces at thrift stores in Philadelphia, then some more pieces in Raleigh, NC, at a restaurant supply store, and over the years, some of them had gotten broken and I no longer had a full set. With a dinner party of 7 people at my house on Friday night, I snapped about the mismatched dishes that I was going to have to put on my table. That led to the little journey from my downtown office to Dick's, conveniently located on 1st Ave just south of town. Anyway, one of the guys behind the counter sized me up, knew that I was new to the store (immediately) and not only asked me what I needed, but in a totally cheerful way took me right to it. And it turned out that in the back, he had half a pallet of one of the pieces I needed, and enough of the rest to piece my set back together. He teased me about only buying 6, saying he'd give me a better price on a couple of hundred... but where would I put them? :-) This store is not really meant for the home cook unless you're serious about it. You have to buy dishes ("smallware" in the trade) in units of 6 or 12, which might be more than you need or want. Still, their prices are really good, especially considering what it costs to ship the stuff if you buy it online! It's heavy, and fragile(ish), so shipping usually costs more per dish than the dish itself... but not so at Dick's. It's a good thing I was in a hurry or I would have been desperate to shop for aprons, knives, mixing bowls and maybe even a tocque (what a conceit!) LOL As it was, I paid my bill and left with a nicely-wrapped box of dinerware dishes. They do have everything, and if you are serious about cooking at home, you should check them out. They are way cheaper than Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table, etc., and the stuff is meant to last forever and to take a lot of abuse. It won't be as pretty as La Creuset, but you'll get great service out of anything you buy at this store.

Vegetables, fruit, meats, condiments , canned goods, utensils - pretty much everything food related. A serious foodie friend tuned me on to this place when it was called something else. Having a senior moment because I can't recall the name offhand. You might have to dodge a few sketchy looking folks in the neighborhood but once you're there - all good in da hood. :) They have little cans of clams but why mess around?

There aren't a ton of choices but many of the items they carry are great deals, without the madness that comes with shopping a larger warehouse store. Another wonderful thing about this store is the service. The service is fast, efficient and always friendly. There is particular dude who might be the manager (beard, hilarious, kind) who usually makes us laugh with some random comment while quickly facilitating our order.

When practicing safe food snobbery, I will always go to this store first!…read more I was recently looking for a place to order a John Boos board. I wanted to find a place in the Seattle area that had these in stock since I was worried about time constraints in shipping. I called the Boos company directly, and they told me to try contacting Bargreen Ellingson and Sur la Table for locations in my area that carried their stock. I called Sur la Table, but they did not have the cutting board I was looking for since it was a custom order item. Next, I called Bargreen Ellingson. I was directed to a customer service rep. The rep informed me that they did not have them in stock, but they could place an order for me. They said it would take 7-10 business days to arrive, and shipping would be $35.95 for ground shipping to come to my home, or $34 to arrive at the store. I complained that I could get it through Amazon for free shipping, but Amazon's site said it would take up to 4 weeks to arrive. So, I decided to go with Bargreen Ellingson. After discussing the price with the rep, I was immensely pleased! Their price was about $90 cheaper than Amazon! Sure, I had to pay for the shipping, but it was still much cheaper! Frankly, I was skeptical about the price because it seemed too good to be true. I got that "aroo?" look on my face and quizzed her to verify she was talking about the same cutting board I was talking about. I couldn't believe it. I asked how that could *possibly* be the right price, and she said: "Well, we buy these things in bulk, so we get a pretty good discount." No exaggeration there, sister! Ultimately the rep offered the shipping to my home for the store rate - $34, so I was a very happy camper. About 15-20 minutes after placing my order, I received a call back from the rep. She was very apologetic and said the item was a custom order item, and would take 4 weeks plus shipping time. She wanted to know if it was okay to proceed with the order, and I told her it was fine. It was a little disappointing that I would have to wait that much longer, but it was somewhat to be expected since Amazon had the same disclaimer. Seven days after placing my order, it arrived! 4 week, schmore weeks. Pfft. It was just as promised, and $60 cheaper than any place I could find online! All in all: great service, great prices, exceeded expectations = WIN! You gained a big, big fan, Bargreen Ellingson!
