Normally I try and maximize my bang for the buck by shopping at Costco when possible. It's a double edged sword though as there are fewer skus to choose from. To my surprise they didn't have canned clams. Chef's Store to the rescue! If it's food related there's a good chance you'll find it here. Good pricing too. Vegetables, fruit, meats, condiments , canned goods, utensils - pretty much everything food related. A serious foodie friend tuned me on to this place when it was called something else. Having a senior moment because I can't recall the name offhand. There are times when I really wish Yelp had a 1/2 star rating because US Foods is a definite 4.5, edging toward five but not quite there. We are part of a volunteer organization that prepares dinner for youth at a shelter. We are on a budget and all of us work full-time so we need to keep the menus simple and cheap. Enter Chef Store. The store is easy to navigate, clean and aisles are wide to accommodate carts as needed. There aren't a ton of choices but many of the items they carry are great deals, without the madness that comes with shopping a larger warehouse store. Another wonderful thing about this store is the service. The service is fast, efficient and always friendly. There is particular dude who might be the manager (beard, hilarious, kind) who usually makes us laugh with some random comment while quickly facilitating our order. read more

I'm not sure what's changed about this place now that is no longer Cash and Cary, other than the hours are so much better (open later, open on weekends). Pretty much everything else looks the same, down to the aisles. This is the cheapest place in town for food with small exceptions (gluten free bread is cheaper at Franz outlet). They don't require a membership, which is nice when you don't go very often. I think a little known fact is that they also do sell a lot of items that are normal size, so not everything is just huge restaurant sized containers. This is probably not the place for produce for a family/individual, though, unless you plan on freezing it. Some items (mandarins, kale salad blend, grape tomatoes, etc.) come in small enough portions, but most are way more than you'd be able to use before it went bad, and not all veggies and fruit survive being frozen. Watch closely for price tags. I've seen many items listed at unit price and other identical tags right next to them for similar items are per pound. If you have the time to make multiple stops for groceries, Smart Foodservice is definitely worth the trip and energy. read more

I had ignored the dingy, blah little warehouse space until yesterday morning, when I was in need of tiny plastic cups. I was told that they'd have such things at Cash & Carry, which is great since I'd been meaning to check it out for a while anyway. When I walked, I was immediately taken aback by the copious amounts of plastics and food service items. Upon further inspection, I came to find that they have just about anything that Costco has, only it's a bit less 'bulky', a lot more dusty, and that there's no membership! Awesome! I found exactly what I was looking for and a few other things and the prices are bargain basement worthy! Nice staff- prompt and efficient service. I did see signs that stated, 'Check out our Fresh Produce'.. Err.. I'm not sure I'm ready for that. Maybe someday... Maybe. Definitely coming back here for stuff like dish wash detergent, plastic items, coffee, miscellaneous paper products and FREE SAMPLES! Egg Rolls and Cheez Whiz under a heat lamp, y'all.. It's not really setup for optimal retail experience, the carts are industrial strength and tend to be a little hard to steer. But, then again, they certainly hold a lot of product and weight. There is a great selection of just about everything. I was looking to replace some pint glasses that we had gotten from Crate & Barrel. Cash & Carry is well-described as a grocery and supply warehouse whose 13 departments include a Beverage Center, Catering Supplies, Cheese, Dairy, Deli Meats, Fresh Bakery, Fresh Meat (cheap prices here if you know how to carve your own big slabs of meat), Fresh Produce, Frozen Foods, Grocery, Janitorial Supplies, Paper Products, and Small Wares/Glass Wares (don't let the "Small Wares/Glass Wares" name deceive -- they have big stuff too like aluminum stock pots). Restaurant owners, party and picnic planners, and folks with large families and/or ample storage space come here for various supplies and mega quantities of meats and produce and huge jars of stuff like mayonnaise and pickles. My issue: they stock and sell HELLA styrofoam which is an environmental catastrophe. I often ask shopping restaurant owners if they'll skip the styrofoam and buy one of the more degradable alternatives instead (they do sell alternatives). I know about *supply and demand* but I wish Cash & Carry would post even a small note asking their customers to "please consider purchasing our paper products as an alternative to styrofoam". read more

This is where you can find the little plastic 2 oz. Solo souffl cups for Jello shots. Don't forget to buy lids, they come separately. You can get a package of 250 for about $1.75, and 100 lids for the same. This is kind of off-topic, but to make the shots I use the regular Jello recipe substituting alcohol for the cold water. For 6 oz. of Jello (the large package) you put in 2 cups of hot water, followed by 2 cups of whatever alcohol you think would go with the flavor you've picked. It makes 4 cups of Jello shots, which if you do the math is about 32 fluid ounces (or 16 little souffl cups). There's about 3 cups in a fifth of hard alcohol. read more

Other than being hard to find (do all Cash & Carry locations do this on purpose?!) this C&C is on par with most all of the locations in this chain. Great buys on some stuff, terrible buys on other stuff. You best know what your product prices should be or you could end up paying quite the premium on a few random products. That said, when buying bulk (and not wanting to chance Costco's ever-changing stock), C&C is your destination. They cater mostly to restaurants, but anyone can purchase here, no membership required. But you can rock your Member's Only jacket if you want. On a side note, I do find it hard to believe that I was the first person to actually add the address for this location in to Yelp. Before it just said "Downtown, Seattle, WA". C'mon Seattle Yelpers, quit yer slackin'. So yeah, bulk cups, bulk candy bulk water, bulk anything. It's here and you can have it. Cash & Carry is one of my favorite places to go grocery shopping. Why? Good service, good prices and excellent selection. They ace every aspect of the consumer needs with flying colors I may add. Also, no membership required! Yahoo!! Whatever you are looking for, they have many varieties and brands to choose from, and they also give you the choice whether or not to buy in bulk. If you do choose bulk it is often a bit cheaper, so it's great for large families. Not like Costco where the brands are limited and the packages are usually too much, at Cash & Carry you can have the freedom to choose as you wish! I like how they have a lot of choices, so you can opt for a cheaper version of a product or buy the better quality if you're willing to fork out the extra dough. Also, they have pretty much everything you could ask for and more... everything from household cleaning supplies to your chocolate milk or muffin tins. Lastly, there is rarely a lineup at the cashier and the service is quick and friendly. They will always help answer your questions or find a product! An excellent restaurant supply store, open to the public, with tons of great choices and decent prices. We came here after visiting nearby restaurant kitchen supply stores and wanted to see the other side of the spectrum. It's a lot like a more concentrated Costco. They do carry a few non-food items. Like paperplates, cups and a few cooking supplies. Things you could need for a party. The produce was actually very tempting. A good selection and condition. Also just tons of it. It was tempting to buy a flat of mushrooms! The frozen meat is also a bargain here and if you are on a budget, I would recommend taking a look at it. The other thing that caught my eye was the coffee syrups. They had an insane selection, probably due to the coffee business in Seattle. But if you need that raspberry shot of flavor for home use, here you go! The downside is, no shopping carts. Only flat beds. Which is hard to do with a kid in tow. Cash and Carry, first of all, takes forms of payment other than cash. Just a heads up, I was shocked. I go there to get cases of energy drinks and Snapple, little plastic Solo cups for jello shots (so far have only had to buy one sleeve of these since said sleeve contains like a thousand cups... that's a lotta jello, folks), giant containers of ketchup and mustard for bbq'ing, frozen shrimp, giant bags of rice for a buck or two, and huge blocks of cheese. I eat way too much cheese, but it's nice that Cash and Carry is available to enable my cheese problem. In addition to canned goods, beverages, and frozen delights, they have all kinds of restaurant type paper products (I am dying to find a reason to buy those red and white paper hot dog trays!) It's a little grimy inside, but that is probably part of what keeps the prices low, low, low! The last time I was there, a guy in front of me in line had his grocery sled piled high with case upon case of vegetable oil. I thought, 'this IS Ballard... I bet that's for fuel, not fries.' Are you looking for some bulk candy? Some of my favorites are carried here for huge boxes containing hundreds, for only about $4. At my local grocery, the same candies are sold individually for 4/$1. Ripppppp! There are other industrial sized cleaning supplies, and disposable plates, etc. I don't bother much with things outside of the flavored syrups and candy, but to each their own. i know plenty of people who shop here as if it's a Costco, all the while saving mucho dinero. read more

Deep frying a turkey for Thanksgiving is no joke. We take it very seriously and need a TON of peanut oil. Costco never has it this time of year and, honestly, who wants to go there during any holiday season? Not me. I yelped for peanut oil around Seattle and Cash & Carry came up first. Lo and behold, it is a mere 5 minutes away from where I live! Way more convenient than Costco and come to find out, way cheaper overall. Walk in and get instantly greeted. i was overwhlemed by the sheer volume of industrial sized kitchen items. Anything and everything you see from restaurants and cafes and taco trucks can all be found here. Pretty exciting. Found the peanut oil. Was in and out in 5 minutes. Recently, I opened a business in the area. They are CONSTANTLY running out of items needed. So much in fact, I gave up on stocking up here and proceed to the Bellevue location. I was forced to sign up here just to write this review of Cash and Carry because no one has mentioned the super easy and delicious frozen soup selection! There are about 20 different kinds, all make about 2 quarts (just add water and simmer for about 1/2 hour) so enough for dinner, snacks and lunches. A thousand times better than canned soup. I may never have to make soup from scratch again! Keep some chicken noodle in the freezer in case of a cold. If you get nothing else here, get some soup and see what I mean. Having never been to a Cash & Carry before, I was amazed when I saw what they had. Best described as part Costco and part Restaurant Supply store, they have everything from 30 quart mixing bowls to ten pound bags of fruit and everything in-between. Yes, everything comes in huge quantities that may be daunting to most consumers, but more reasonable packages are also available. One of my favorite parts of Cash & Carry would have to be the selection of Torani and DaVinci Syrups. They literally have every flavor produced by both brands, including seasonal flavors, and the price is basically half what you can expect to pay at a grocery store - if you can find a grocery store that carries your flavor of choice. The frozen, prepared desert selection is very broad and the items are huge. If I were having a large dinner party and didn't have time to make dessert, C&C would be high on my list. To a more commercial bent, but also great for heavy duty home cooks, they offer a huge selection of commercial grade bakeware, cookware, and tools for just about every purpose. They even have chef's hats, something I've had trouble finding elsewhere. Cash & Carry also has many products that you just don't see elsewhere, including pre-crushed boxes of Oreo crumbs, quart size tubs of mini-mini marshmallows, multi-pound containers of MSG, and even deodorizer cakes for urinals - they really do have just about everything. If you've never been to Cash & Carry, I highly recommend it for the entertainment value and irony if nothing else. Well, I'm pretty fond of fresh citrus especially when my friend Jose is available so I don't mind that the thing takes up half my kitchen. So I head off to the undeniably weird QFC on Dravus for some oranges. $2.99 a pound. Jeez, that's just what I need a new exquisitely expensive culinary (drinking?) habit. I mentioned this torture of the lust of the senses against general practicality and he said "hey, if you're crush those things on an industrial scale. you have to go to Cash&Carry" So I did. I am reminded of the Punky Brewster episode where she was locked in a fridge when I walk into their deep freeze, Or really any 80's sitcom I think they all had some plot about being locked in a freezer.
