I love this shop. There is a distinct smell of supplies and decorations that transport me back to an old fashioned European store. The assortment of pans and decorating equipment goes beyond what Crate and Barrel may carry. I know because I used to work in their kitchen department. The owner is really nice and I know many parents that have made fancy cakes for their kiddos birthday with supplies from this shop. I enjoy supporting local and learning new things. There was a time before YouTube and internet in which shops like this existed. It's actually seeing the well made products in person and not just scrolling through 20 Amazon reviews of a made in China product. I think everyone interested in baking should visit this store. This is a delightful little shop. My visit felt like a fun treasure hunt. The amount of variety was very impressive, they have great variety of pans, molds, hand tools, dyes, decorations, etc. I was also amazed they had some dyes made by small businesses I already know and love. I go here again and again and I have to leave a review. I learned recently after mentioning it to my dad that this is the same baking store we went to when I was too little to remember it. So I'm gonna preface this with I am NOT a professional baker or decorator or professional food anything! I am not especially artistic either. I have always been so welcomed into Home Cake, never felt intimidated by the oodles of professional supplies available and have always basically had my hand held and made to feel anything was within my abilities given the proper info about tricks and technique (which they lavishly shower on you for free)! The previous owner (the legendary Home Cake legacy Griel) and the new owner (super skilled and knowledgeable David) are just the best resource to have in your back pocket when attempting stuff you definitely should probably not be attempting . I only make cakes 3 times a year for my 3 kid's birthdays and we do a wacky Christmas cookie decorating party in December. That being said, I let my kids choose what they want for a cake...in hindsight, this may have been a terrible idea...but I've always come through with their dream cakes basically because of this store and the people who work there!!! If I had just purchased stuff online, then A) I would not have had enough knowledge to pull these delicious cakes and cookies off B) I would have had alllllll the wrong stuff and spent a ton of money needlessly, and C) my kids would probably cry when their cakes fell over because making cakes to feed the quantity of family and friends we have can be epic. They have always walked me through exactly what I need and given me tips on how to do it affordably, easily, and more quickly than I could even have hoped for (did I mention I'm a crazy busy mom of 3?!). Wether it be a hello kitty castle cake, beach themed Christmas cookies, or a spider smashing a car rainbow cake (no idea what my 4 year old was thinking...also, it was rainbow layers inside) I have always been the hero mom in their eyes for these and it's all due to this single establishment. Side note: decided to take on making sugar skulls one year. They had the molds, a free recipe card for me, and gave me suggestions about which icing recipe and decorating tips to use to make them amazing! Also, the stack of pancakes is a CAKE!!! And probably the easiest/fastest one I've ever made. And, if nothing else go there for food coloring!!! The stuff you get at the grocery store is a watery mess of a joke! Their food coloring comes in like a bazillion (ok, maybe like 50) colors and is super rich in color without having to add much, doesn't add water to your frostings, and doesn't add any weird tastes. read more

"Beware: you will suddenly feel a surge of creativeness upon entering the store." This store contains massive amounts of cake decorating supplies enough to satisfy your inner "Cake Boss" dreams. Stacks of cake pans, boxes of cutters, and various tools and toppers are displayed in mini box bins. The initial reaction when I entered the store was "WOW." There were so many selections that my initial idea for my cake suddenly evolved into a more elaborate design. The store owner was kind enough to provide me with an on-the-spot recommendation for my cake design. She helped select specific presentation boards, boxes, fondant, roller, offset spatulas, and piping tips. The prices are very reasonable and the tips and tricks by the owner is free. My overall impression of this place reminds me of a small town store were the main goal is to ensure you are enjoying your cake decorating experience and that you have all of the tools needed to create your masterpiece. read more

I ADORE this place. I am a very amateur and infrequent baker, but I do like to try adventurous things sometimes and learn as I go. On more than one occasion I have been in the throes of frustration and setbacks on some ill-advised baking project, and realized I was missing some obscure tool or ingredient, and had to grumblingly put my mess aside and get into my car to drive here and fetch it. But each time I felt immediately better upon stepping foot inside! It's cozy and I invariably find what I need, even if it is obscure or highly specific. It's small but they somehow manage to fit almost everything you could possibly need inside. The owner is a real gem. Half the time I don't even have to look around for what I need because he'll offer assistance the moment I step inside, and he'll know offhand exactly where it is. If I'm not sure which thing to buy out of a few options, or if I don't know exactly how to use the tool, I'll bring it to the counter with a "please help me" look and he is always ready with advice and instruction. He's advised me NOT to buy certain things before when I didn't actually need them. He's knowledgeable, honest, and easy to talk to. I feel downright lucky to have a shop like this nearby. It makes me want to start baking more so I have more excuses to come here. read more

This place has EVERYTHING you need for cake, cookie or candy decoration. If they don't have it, you don't need it. Shout out to David. We went for cookie cutters and he knew exactly where the last jingle bell was. WARNING: parking lot is a little tight and hard to get int and out. Recommend: street parking is plenty. read more

I can't say enough nice things about my experiences here. I've decided to make and decorate my own wedding cake (WHAT? WHY? - there, I said it for you), and the owner (must get her name, must stop calling her 'the cake lady') has held my hand through so many steps. She will just randomly mention something which turns out to be the key to making the next step go smoothly. But the best part? She refuses to sell me things I think I want to buy. At least five times she has said to me "Well....you COULD buy that but you know that you'd get the same effect with a penny's worth of saran wrap." - or something to that effect. So although I keep popping in to buy more things for the cake (cause it's fun), I've spent a LOT LESS than I would have if I was purchasing all this stuff online or at a big-box craft store. You definitely want to go to this store when you're not in a hurry, because a) there are so many things to look at, and b) yeah it's kind of a mess. We were there looking for candy molds for chocolate and didn't really know what we wanted, so we didn't mind poking around and searching through boxes all over the store - to us, that was part of the fun. The store is smallish, but CRAMMED to the ceiling with all kinds of fancy cake pans, candy molds, colored sugars and sugar decorations, flavorings, cookie cutters, and more kinds of cupcake wrappers than I have ever seen in one place. Animal-print birthday candles? You got it! Sugar candy googly eyes? Sure! And it's all mixed together throughout the store, so if you don't find what you're looking for, it's probably tucked away somewhere on the other side of the room. It was surprisingly busy on a Saturday afternoon, and the lady behind the counter periodically called out to everyone generally, asking if anyone needed anything, but otherwise let us do our thing without hovering, which I like. We had some questions about melting chocolate and she happily gave us some tips and advice. I agree with other reviewers that there is a bit of a markup vs. grocery or discount stores, but then again, most of what this store has can't be found anywhere else. Buy the basics at Target or wherever and come here for your rabbit-riding-a-rooster candy mold needs. read more

This holiday season I decided that I would try making high-quality boutique-style chocolates (see photo #13). I was so pleased to learn that the HCDS Co. carries almost everything I need. I was able to find these chocolate-making/gifting supplies: - Bulk chocolate: from dark Guittard to colored/flavored disks. - Chocolate molds: From inexpensive plastic molds to pro-quality polycarbonate and silicone molds. - Edible supplies: Natural flavorings for fillings, pre-made marzipan and caramel, cocoa butter, chocolate dyes, luster dust, petal dust, and sparkle dust. - Prep. and decorating tools: Candy and chocolate thermometers, confectioners paint brushes, pastry tips/bags, and chocolate-handling gloves. - Packaging materials: paper cups in every size and color, presentation bags and boxes of all kinds and a wall of ribbons to choose from. The only supplies that I had to go elsewhere to buy were my basics (nuts, corn syrup, confectioners sugar, heavy cream, etc.) and a few specialized polycarbonate chocolate molds. I also wish they had carried some fancier high-end chocolate like Valrohna but, given that this is primarily a cake shop, I imagine that it would be expensive to stock. This store is well supplied with all those little incidental supplies that you need for your dessert projects. It is definitely a bit cluttered and things can be hard to find sometimes, but the owner is extremely knowledgeable and will point out what you need if you ask. Give yourself a good 30-60 minutes for your visit...there is so much to see! read more

The owner: I saw her taking the time to provide advice and answer questions. As she's the only one working, this can hold up the line if you're trying to get in/get out and don't need assistance. The owner is one of those confident, not soft-spoken people that can rub people the wrong way. An innocent inquiry (I know she was trying to help in case I grabbed the wrong product) sounds condescending coming out of her mouth (because of phrasing, tone, and because I grabbed the correct product)... some people are just like that, she doesn't mean any harm. I think someone who didn't know what they were doing would appreciate her. The selection/price: This place is perfect for the local home baker (as the name implies). I've done a price comparison. Most of the items are going to be less expensive if you buy from an online kitchen supply place, IF you have a large enough order to get free shipping. Some of the items are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper if you're willing to find it on eBay and wait 1 month to have it shipped from China (where it's manufactured anyway). But specific items are cheaper here than on eBay or Amazon. It just depends! tl;dr - Perfect for grabbing a few things that the local grocery store wouldn't have. Great for the novice who wants someone available to answer questions. Can be frustrating for someone who knows what they want and simply needs to locate it, buy it, and leave quickly. read more

Dave is THEE best. I decided to undertake the task of baking a cake for my friend's graduation party. I came in with a bunch of pictures for ideas. Dave talked me through the whole cake baking and decorating process. He looked through my pictures and told me what ideas to forget about and what ideas were feasibly possible. They have a large stock of supplies and I had some fun checking out a large selection of supplies that they have. Unlike other baking or generic stores in this area, Home Cake Decorating Supply Co. is unpretentious and does sell baking/cake supplies at a much more affordable price. I took some cake decoration classes and dropped by this place to get some piping heads that I couldn't find anywhere. Just met Dave, the new owner, he's great! Super friendly and he was wearing a Star Wars Starry Night shirt which are two of my husband's favorite things. Griel still works on Friday and Saturday and the store's starting to get more organized with the two of them working. They have a website now. I have lived in N. Seattle for over 15 years and I have visited Home Cake Decorating Supply 5 or 6 time since moving here. They always have what I need when I try to pull off a cake recipe from my parent's restaurant: - large, deep, cake pans in 4 sizes - check - decorating tips - yep - cake boxes - for sure - cake rounds - had the gigantic ones I needed - cake flour - cheaper than Target! This FIVE STAR review, however, if for their amazing support during the COVID-19 outbreak. They adjusted their business to support curb-side pickup and delivery for those baking supplies and ingredients you just can't get anywhere else right now. -update 4/3/2020 - Dave is now carrying cake flour.
