The location is not really anything to write home about but honestly the food makes up for it completely. You forget all about it after the first bite. Holy Basil gets a solid four stars from me. The flavors are bold and really hit that authentic Thai spot, especially if you like a little spice. Lol, so this review draft was from an entire year ago, I've been burned out for *way* too long, but I imagine likely nothing has changed much other than probably the prices (likely higher), and if you're lucky, the bathroom (a year ago it was super sketchy, like it was in bad need of multiple repairs. It looked like the building landlord was supposed to be responsible for it, though, that's not a gripe about Holy Basil, which has no control over their building's bathrooms.) Probably still just as sketchy a part of DTLA as it was a year ago, too (notably: at one point a beggar walked in and literally pestered us until we gave him some money, and nobody told him to leave.) It's more of a to-go place, but we were here on the way to something else nearby, We tried - for, at the time, $16.5 each - a beef kra pow, and a pork pad se ew, and a $4 side of rice noodles (plus a dollar card fee.) Prices seemed entirely reasonable for the amount you got and the quality, especially given it's DTLA (even if a fairly sketchy part of it). Pad se ew is one of the dishes me and my wife judge Thai places on - theirs is great. Gailan is tricky to cook perfectly, and theirs is cooked perfectly (of course, the first step in being quality pad se ew, just having gailan instead of way less exciting European broccoli, a lot of places already fail.) The kra pow, funny enough, we hadn't previously had as one of the dishes we particularly thought about, but that's changed in the past year (my wife's been making it a bunch lately, and this might well have been why, now that I think about it.) The one we make at home uses ground pork, mostly because Wild Fork sells great ground pork for super cheap - my wife is a great chef, and her pork kra pow comes out wonderfully, but this kra pow was definitely superior. Then again, you'd hope so, for $16.5 (quite possibly more now.) The side of garlic noodles, on their own, we weren't nearly as impressed with. They're pretty tasty noodles, as noodles go, and you get a lot of them, but it wasn't super flavorful garlic, so by itself, mostly just tasted like rice noodles. However, if you like spicy things like I do and my wife doesn't, if you dump a bunch of complimentary chili oil over all over it, that's a very different story, flavor-wise. I first tried Holy Basil by ordering their egg rolls for delivery on DoorDash and they were SO good that I had to place a pickup order just to see the restaurant in person. Turns out it's tucked inside a hidden little food hall in DTLA, with plenty of table seating. Such a cool, lowkey spot. I'm a big lover of egg rolls and lumpia, and when I tell you these egg rolls are next level... they're unique, insanely crispy, super flavorful, and LONG (like, laughably long lol). They're filled with pork and come with a delicious Mae Ploy sauce that complements them perfectly. Super tasty and officially my new favorite egg rolls right now. initially thought $10.50 for three was a bit pricey, but after seeing the size and tasting them, they're 100% worth it. I crave them anytime I'm in the area. I also love the packaging and overall aesthetic, and I'm definitely coming back to try more of the menu (Pad Thai is next). This place has a fun vibe, very small but surprisingly echoey when you first get in there. We did not have reservations one bri arrived but we are lucky that it was only a 10 minute wait. I think we got some of the best spots in the place though, at the bar, so we can see where all the magic happens. However like I mentioned earlier it is so noisy in there! The venue is pretty small and because the room shape is relatively boxy with hard walls and with the kitchen up in the action makes for a relatively loud ambient noise space. I think the place has enough charm and various sounds going on to justify probably not having music, but I'm pretty sure there is something playing that was echoing in the place, but couldn't tell you what it was. Anyways enough on that. The food really does have a very eclectic approach, I think drawing together Thai in Mexican influence, at least based on my taste. The rice dish was a little bit plain but very fresh and well executed based on the ingredients contained within. The chicken dish was enjoyable it was a fried chicken as it's protein which had a subtle crunch yet perfectly cooked and delicate on the chew. The sauce was an unmistakable mole type sauce flavor And while good as a combination I thought it lacked a little bit of depth in the flavor. The wagyu steak dish had great flavors textures and overall good combination but boy does it kick you in the butt on the spice level. I would not order that last one again unless there's a way to adjust the spice level. We weren't asked about spice level so I'm not sure if that's something that typically comes up or if it's a common concern for guests. The last dish we had was the key lime pie which to me was the star of the show. It is homemade and I probably could eat two more slices of that in one sitting. I would definitely come back, but I would certainly choose different entree options to get a better feel for the restaurant. And I'll probably order that key lime pie again, so good! read more

A little hard to find, as it was located in a food court-esk place in the fashion district (?) there were shops on shops selling suits for a great price on the same street. The pad see ew was very good, just enough flavor of salty/sweet. They give you a good amount. I can say that out of all pad see ew I've tried, this one is most comparable to Hanuman Thai in OC (my favorite...). I chose pork loin in mine out of shrimp and tofu. My gf loves thai food and I recently found time to get an order in after work. We got the pad kee mao, gra pow eggplant, and chicken and rice. I waited about 30 minutes for my order to be ready even after ordering for a specific time pickup. The pad kee mao was my favorite of the 3. The noodles were chewy and springy and I loved the strong taste of the sauce they used. The generous amount of veggies and soft chicken meat was tasty too. I usually don't like eggplant, but the gra pow eggplant was delicious. I loved how soft and almost mushy the eggplant was along with a light eggplant taste. The addition of the mushier and crunchy skin pumpkin went well. I didn't expect there to be rice included since that was not mentioned on the menu. That was a big plus. The chicken and rice dish was also better than what I was expecting. I'm a big fan of hainan chicken rice and this was both similar but very different. The chicken was the same style and soft. The nice crunchiness of the bits of garlic and cucumber gave some refreshing taste of the stronger taste of ginger. The rice also had a garlic ginger taste to it too. Overall, I would put this spot as my favorite thai spot in DTLA area. The food was great and my gf also really liked it too. I used to order once a month AND dream of the pad see ew at this place. And now I feel like the brand has got a little too big for its birches. I think the food has been holding up a bit but its service continues to be really over the top stuck up that I'm uncomfortable when I try to bring my friends to try it. I've ordered every 2-3 weeks recently and sometimes the same type of order via delivery and it isn't this much. It's always like $44...plus tip. The second time was much better * Pad see ew with pork: perfectly sweet and savory, came with some pickled jalapeño slices on the side * Chicken wings: bogo free via Postmates. We went for a quick bite as but the place was not very inviting this time : There was a half open water large drain behind on the table next to wall and the tables were dark as they removed the lights. I was told that they are moving to the Arts district in 2 months so why not close this gloomy place for walk ins and just leave the food delivery business? Upon requesting a beer, we were told again like at the Atwater location that they were out of beer but we could have wine or sake. The food was not bad but not great either, the pad thai lacking in flavor and char. The green curry was a little too watery for me but I guess, it is a different recipe than the traditional one. My coworkers and I came to this food hall to try Broken Mouth, but the wait was too long, so we decided to try Holy Basil and I could not be happier that we did!! We were just so surprised how flavorful each dish was! We started with the pad see ew which we got with the flat noodles, and it's probably the best version of pad see ew I've ever had! 9.5/10 The yellow curry rigatoni is one of my top 3 things I've eaten in the past year because it was so unique, so creative, and so delicious. It was a complete surprise! If I could give it an 11/10 I would. The shrimp fried rice does not look like any shrimp fried rice I've had anywhere else. My coworkers and I were a little confused when it came out and we were worried we weren't going to like it. But our server told us to pour the fish sauce on it and the like, and oh my goodness was it delicious. Incredible. 9.5/10 We also ordered the Leo beers which were perfect with a lime. The seating is very minimal, and the size of actual dishes they gave us to put our food on was pretty small, but our server was kind and attentive, and the food was out of this world. When I arrived, a family of four was already waiting at the counter for someone to take their order. I noticed that no staff acknowledged them--no "we'll be right with you," nothing. Eventually, they left without ordering. I took some time to look over the menu and decided on what I wanted. But after waiting a while, I realized no one was coming to take my order either. I politely asked a young woman who was bussing tables if anyone was available, and her response was shockingly rude. With an attitude, she told me, "That would be me, you're just going to have to wait until I finish bussing these tables." I calmly replied, "That's totally fine, I hope you have a better day," but she remained unfriendly. At that point, my first impression of Holy Basil was already ruined. Final Thoughts I completely understand that everyone has bad days, but customer service plays a huge role in the dining experience. We used to love this place but the quality like several other Yelpers have mentioned has gone way down. The eating area of the restaurant looks dirty and there was a gnat flying over the table. The pad Thai was not as charred as it used to be and the portion is smaller. The small shrimps at $2 a piece are still too expensive. The green curry was watery and I could barely notice the coconut flavor. Of course, and again they were out of the beer but they would happily oblige with bottled wine or sake, all more expensive items. Wowwwwww. I can't tell you guys how delicious this place is. Menu is not too big but has most of the classics. Parking is super difficult as it always is in downtown. When I don't feel like dealing with it, I uber from work or I uber eats the meal to my office. It's located in a sort of market place of sorts and there are other restaurants in the open area as well. This one is in the front. A couple tables and plastic chairs to sit at if you choose and a sort of counter area. The important part: GET THE PORK BELLY! It's so good im reluctant to share but the pork belly is so crispy and perfectly fried that I could eat it everyday. Also the sauce that comes with it is a cilantro fish sauce concoction that would literally make a shoe taste good. My other favs are the chicken wings, pad thai, egg rolls, and the gra pow moo krob. The hype is real. I was always put off by this place since I read that parking is rough in this area. Surprisingly for doing a pickup on Friday at 7pm, free street meter parking (since it's free after 6pm) was plentiful. I think it was due to the NY holiday where the out-of-towners aren't taking up space. I placed an order online and drove over. The order still wasn't ready so I had to wait a couple of minutes. I got a number of dishes. The portions aren't that big so it's a bit pricey but the quality is there. Overall, the flavors are sweeter but they pack more of a punch and are very flavorful. I loved the deep soy sauce flavor of the pad see ew. The moo krob was just okay; I wanted this to be crispier. The shrimp yellow curry was unique and didn't taste like a curry I've had before; the shrimp was plump. The Tom Yum also had deeper flavors with tons of aromatics. The crispy rice salad was a bit of a downer and was too vinegary. This spot doesn't serve your typical Thai flavors and delivers something extra. You must be warned though that my tummy did have some troubles a few days after. read more

The sauce took it to another level, adding depth and balance. As a Thai American I need to brag to you about my favorite Thai Restaurant on So Cal is @holybasil_la ! Holy Basil is elevated modern Thai cuisine that is better than my the Thai spots around the corner and even better my mom's Thai cooking. The genus behind it is chef @de.au who really understands Thai flavors and knows how to bring it up notches that will impress you every single time. There are so many Thai spots what will try to flash you with crazy multi level plates or neon lights but at the end those spots are all gimmicky and the food is just okay. But at Holy Basil, there are no tricks, just really good Thai food. Follow their IG and watch out for their special seafood weekend menu and collaborations.
